<keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>'s total merchandise exports are expected to grow by 33 per cent during the second quarter of <keyword id="5027223" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fy22" source="Orion">FY22</keyword>, the <keyword id="402797" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="export-import-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Export-Import Bank of India</keyword> said on Friday. Accordingly, <keyword id="10407892" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-exim-bank" source="Orion">India Exim Bank</keyword> forecast total merchandise exports in Q2FY22 to grow to $98.45 billion from $74.02 billion reported for the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Besides, non-oil exports are expected to rise 28.3 per cent to $85.63 billion, as compared to $66.73 billion reported for the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal. "The rise in India's exports could be attributed largely to the low base effect, pick-up in growth in advanced economies and the resultant increase in global import demand," India Exim Bank said in a statement. "Increase in commodity prices have also contributed to the increase in India's exports," it added. The forecasts are based on India Exim Bank's Export Leading Index (ELI) model. These forecast are released by India Exim Bank on a quarterly basis, during the first week of June, September, December and March for the corresponding quarters. India's exports expected to grow by 33% during the second quarter

Given the downward projections for demand and growth in the Eurozone, there will be negative implications for the the bloc’s trading partners. The EU’s demand for imports will decline - something that will be exacerbated by the global trend towards protectionism. India, which counts a number of European countries like Germany, Belgium and Italy among its top trading partners, is likely to suffer a decline in <keyword id="35090" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="exports">exports</keyword> as a result of the slowdown in the EU. Taken together, Eurozone countries account for the <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/trade/policy/countries-and-regions/countries/india/">largest share of Indian trade volumes</a> (13.1%), ahead of China and the US, according to the European Commission. The country’s exports to the EU have been steadily increasing in the last few years, despite stalled progress on a <keyword id="44844" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trade">trade</keyword> treaty.

A slowdown in the Eurozone points to doom for India's ailing exports

India is preparing country-wise profiles of defence products and platforms to promote their exports and the government will stand "side by side" with the domestic industry in this endeavour through diplomatic channels, a senior Defence Ministry official said Monday. Raj Kumar, secretary, Department of Defence Production, said at a webinar that the domestic defence industry will hold web interactions with the representatives of friendly countries to figure out what kind of products and platforms they require. "We are preparing country-wise profiles of products, weapons and platforms which are probably needed by our friendly countries. So we are now planning to start web interaction led by the industry," Kumar said. "That country's defence attache, our DPSUs (defence public sector undertakings), industry, will then figure out what is in the store for us to promote there for exports," he said. Kumar said the government will be standing side by side with the domestic industry through its defence attaches, embassies and diplomatic channels to promote exports. To promote indigenous production, the Defence Ministry on August 9 announced restrictions on import of 101 weapons and military platforms including light combat helicopters, conventional submarines and cruise missiles under a staggered timeline till 2024. Kumar said a second list of import-restricted defence items will be notified soon. "This is the first list we are examining and then a second list will also come. We expect you (industry) to come forward and start investing to meet our requirements," he said at the webinar -- "Army Make Projects 2020" -- organised by FICCI. The senior official said as successful domestic bidders move to the defence equipment production stage, his department will share their details with the UP and Tamil Nadu defence corridor authorities, who "will compete in attracting your units to their respective states". He said since the three services are making efforts to push the "Make II" category of defence production projects, he will interact with project participants to understand their concerns and share best practices among the services. As secretary of the Department of Defence Production, Kumar heads the collegiate committee that approves the "Make II" category of projects. Under the Make II category, no government funding is given to the Indian company for the prototype development process. If a prototype developed by the company meets the standards set by the armed forces, an order is placed for such equipment or platforms. "Everything, whether it is defence industrial corridor, or whether it is defence production and export promotion policy, or whether it is a negative list - everything works in the same direction that we have to be among the top producers of defence items," he said. On August 9, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the ministry was now ready for a "big push" to indigenous defence manufacturing in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for an "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India). India is one of the most lucrative markets for global defence giants. The country has figured among the top three global importers of military hardware for the last eight years. After import embargo, India is creating country profiles for its defence exports

Mumbai, May 22 () The Reserve Bank on Friday announced a Rs 15,000-crore line of credit to the Export-Import Bank of India, to help the sagging foreign trade. The central bank said Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) depends on foreign currency borrowings for its operations and as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is unable to raise the resources, due to which the facility is being extended. "It has been decided to extend a line of credit of Rs 15,000 crore to the EXIM Bank for a period of 90 days from the date of availment with rollover up to a maximum period of one year so as to enable it to avail a US dollar swap facility to meet its foreign exchange requirements," Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said. He said the country's export-import trade has suffered because of external demand crippling owing to the pandemic and decline in import of essential goods and services. Among other measures, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also decided to increase the maximum permissible period of pre-shipment and post-shipment export credit sanctioned by banks from the existing one year to 15 months, for disbursements made up to July 31, 2020, Das said. On the imports front, it has been decided to extend the time period for completion of remittances against normal imports into India (except in cases where amounts are withheld towards guarantee of performance) from six months to 12 months from the date of shipment for imports made on or before July 31, 2020, Das said. According to Das this will provide greater flexibility to importers in managing their operating cycles in a COVID-19 environment. As part of the developmental and regulatory policies, the RBI also announced help to Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) on the refinance front through the roll over of a three month, Rs 15,000-crore facility announced earlier. "In order to provide greater flexibility to SIDBI in its operations, it has been decided to roll over the facility at the end of the 90th day for another period of 90 days," Das said. For the financial markets, in view of the difficulties reported by the Foreign Portfolio Investors and custodians for adhering to the condition of investing at least 75 per cent of allotted limits are invested in three months, the RBI granted an additional three months to fulfil this requirement. New Delhi, May 22 () The measures announced by RBI on Friday will provide more liquidity in the hands of exporters which would help them in fulfilling their overall obligations during these difficult times of COVID-19, according to exporters. Welcoming RBI's decision to extend the loan repayment moratorium for another three months up to August 31, Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) Chairman A Sakthivel said the central bank has taken effective steps to protect the sector. The Reserve Bank of India(RBI) on Friday announced a Rs 15,000-crore line of credit to the Export-Import Bank of India, to boost the sagging foreign trade. Among other measures, the central bank has decided to increase the maximum permissible period of pre-shipment and post-shipment export credit sanctioned by banks from the existing one year to 15 months, for disbursements made up to July 31, 2020. "RBI's decisions to ensure access to affordable and collateral free loans, moratorium on term loans, easing of working capital financing, increase of export credit period to 15 months from 12 months, extension of packing credit period for existing loans, among others will go a long way in ensuring the survival and growth of exporters," Sakthivel said in a statement. He added that the flexibilities extended to the institutions and exporters availing credit will help in addressing the need of the apparel export industry for a buffer period in stabilising their business after the restart. Sharing similar views, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) said the repo and reverse repo rate cut of 40 basis points, extension in the moratorium period for three months along with the extension of the pre and post shipment credit for the exports sector has come as a much needed respite for the sector. "This will allow more liquidity in the hands of the exporters thereby helping them in fulfilling their overall export obligation during such difficult and testing times. We are ushering into an era of very competitive credit rates to help manufacturing and overall economy," FIEO President Sharad Kumar Saraf said. He said these measures will not only help in revival of growth but will also help in mitigating the impact of COVID-19 while ensuring that the inflation remains within the target range. "Besides, steps taken with regard to outward remittance for imports being extended from 6 months to 12 months will help importers as they will have the longer repatriation period," he said. Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) Chairman Mohit Singla said financially stressed exporters will benefit from unforeseen circumstances beyond control, on account of importers' inability to pay within 6 months and thus causing offence in India. Therefore, increasing the time of outward remittance from 6 months to 12 months, will surely help as they will have a longer payment time, Singla said. "The loan moratorium increase from 3 months to 6 months is a very welcome move allowing an exporter with wider window to manage financial conditions better. This will ease the pressure from borrower of one-time accumulated payment by increasing the payback cycle," Singla added. Further, he said measures like extending the dollar swap facility to Exim Bank, extension of import payments from 6 month to 12 month and increasing the exporters' length of credit to 15 months will solve the working capital woes of traders to a considerable extent and ease the pressure of making immediate payment. Vikramjit Sahney, President of International Chamber of Commerce, Paris-India welcomed the RBI Governor's announcement to extend moratorium on term loans till August 31 and reduce repo rate to 4 per cent. Sahney, however, expressed concerns over Indian banks becoming very conservative in these tragic times as the economy faces both demand and supply side constraints. Bloomberg notes that this was the <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-08/trade-deficit-in-u-s-plunges-on-record-petroleum-exports.html">lowest petroleum deficit</a> since August 2009.

The main driver for the sharp improvement in the deficit was weaker import demand, as the pace of total imports declined 2.7% m/m in December. Domestic demand for imported goods were weaker across the board, with imports of industrial supplies (down 6.9% m/m) particularly weak, adding to the 3.7% m/m drop in auto imports. Petroleum imports were also lower, as both lower energy prices and imported volumes pushed the imported energy bill lower. <keyword id="35094" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="export">Export</keyword> activity, however, rose at a decent 2.1% m/m pace, driven mostly by the 9.6% m/m surge in export of industrial supplies.

Trade Deficit Tanks As Energy Imports Plunge

New Delhi, Feb 16 () The government has decided to pump Rs 1,300 crore into state-owned Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) to fund its business growth.Last year, the government doubled its authorised capital from Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore."The (Rs 1,300 crore) provision is for Exim Bank as equity support/ subscription to increase the paid up capital of the bank to the level of its authorized capital," as per the Budget documents presented in Parliament earlier this month.This is Rs 350 crore higher than provision made by the government for the current fiscal. The government earmarked Rs 950 crore capital infusion for the bank.Exim Bank is the principal export credit agency in India and the infusion will give an impetus to new initiatives such as supporting Indian textile industries, likely changes in the Concessional Finance Scheme, likelihood of new letters of credit in future in view of the country's active foreign policy and strategic intent.Established in 1982, Exim Bank is the apex financial institution for financing, facilitating and promoting the country's international trade.The bank primarily lends for exports from India, including supporting overseas buyers and Indian suppliers for export of developmental and infrastructure projects, equipment, goods and services from India. Govt to infuse Rs 1,300 cr in Exim Bank next fiscal

The <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> on Tuesday proposed rationalising <keyword id="19909672" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="regulations" source="keywords">regulations</keyword> that cover <keyword id="19986776" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="export" source="keywords">export</keyword> and <keyword id="20040382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="import" source="keywords">import</keyword> <keyword id="19971375" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="transactions" source="keywords">transactions</keyword> with an aim to promote ease of doing <keyword id="19933715" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="business" source="keywords">business</keyword> and empower banks to provide more efficient service to their <keyword id="19986712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-exchange" source="keywords">foreign exchange</keyword> customers. The central bank has issued 'Regulation of Foreign Trade under Foreign Exchange Management Act (<keyword id="19940710" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fema" source="keywords">FEMA</keyword>), 1999 - <keyword id="20399690" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="draft" source="keywords">Draft</keyword> Regulations and Directions' in this regard. As per the draft, every exporter should furnish to the specified authority a declaration specifying the amount representing the full export value of the goods or services. "The amount representing the full export value of goods and services shall be realised and repatriated to India within nine months from the date of shipment for goods and date of invoice for services," it said. The draft also proposes that an exporter who has not realised the full value of export within the time specified may be caution listed by the authorised dealer. An exporter who has been caution listed can undertake export only against receipt of advance payment in full or against an irrecoverable letter of credit, to the satisfaction of the authorised dealer. According to the draft, no advance remittance for the import of gold and silver should be permitted unless specifically approved by the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reserve-Bank-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reserve Bank of India" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Reserve Bank of India">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>. The RBI said the proposed regulations are intended to promote ease of doing business, especially for small exporters and importers. They are also intended to empower Authorised Dealer banks to provide quicker and more efficient service to their foreign exchange customers, the central bank said. The RBI has sought comments on the draft regulations under FEMA and directions to authorised dealer banks by September 1.

RBI proposes rationalising regulations on export, import transactions

When <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>’s minister for commerce Zhong Shan visited <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> for the China-India Joint Group on Economic Relations, Trade, Science and Technology <a href="http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2018-03/27/c_137068871.htm">this March</a>, a conciliatory tone was in the air. Deals were struck, investment pledges were made and China even hinted at the complementary nature between its Belt and Road Initiative and the Make in India programme. India’s commerce ministry issued <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/erelcontent.aspx?relid=178060">a statement</a> the day after the meet. It announced that the two countries would work to address India’s growing <keyword id="113688" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-deficit">trade deficit</keyword> with China. While Indo-China trade reached <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/business/india-china-trade-hits-a-record-844-billion/article22970857.ece">a record $84.4 billion</a> last year, India’s exports to China comprised a mere 19% of this figure, with the rest coming from imports. This amounts to a $52 billion trade deficit. For its part, China has promised it would allow Indian exporters greater access to its markets, especially for agricultural and pharmaceutical products. The first of such schemes to seemingly achieve this was unveiled earlier this week. China is planning to hold an import-only trade fair this November, but a mere total of around <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/foreign-trade/100-indian-traders-may-take-part-in-chinas-first-import-only-fair-in-november/articleshow/64251107.cms">100 Indian exporters</a> are expected to participate. An insufficient solution This solution is, by all accounts, a PR stunt and needs to be backed up by more comprehensive measures. Given the low level of representation and the fact that India’s exporters will be vying with companies from a number of other countries, out of the 100 participating nations, so it’s unlikely to translate into a substantial boost to India’s exports. In its defence, China has proposed <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/YSK6poamZ5unLf6O0Y3WCL/China-seeks-FTA-with-India-to-boost-trade-opportunities.html">a free trade agreement</a> with India - something that both sides should work toward as well as the reduction of tariffs. India’s pharmaceutical exports to China were consistently curbed by the latter’s high duties on medicines. While China recently agreed to cut tariffs <a href="https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/south-asia/china-removes-import-duties-on-28-drugs">on 28 drugs</a>, especially cancer drugs, a specific policy to promote generic drug imports would be more beneficial to India. India is not the only country that China is trying to reduce its trade imbalance with. China has a $375 billion trade deficit with the US. Under the threat of punitive tariffs on its products, China has reportedly pledged to reduce this deficit by <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/us-china-agree-to-cut-american-trade-deficit/2018/05/20/7ce27c5c-5be6-11e8-9889-07bcc1327f4b_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.e28c72705fef">“significantly increasing”</a> its imports of US goods and services. The US plans to send a delegation to China soon to hammer out the details of this trade deficit reduction plan. India has shown it can act tough too In August last year, India matched its counterpart’s protectionist measures by imposing anti-dumping duties <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/policy/antidumping-duty-on-93-products-from-china-nirmala-sitharaman/article9809065.ece">on 93 Chinese products</a>, including electronics, chemicals and machinery. Unfortunately, India is not as influential as the US and hence, its bargaining power is limited. It should, however, continue applying pressure to China to stand by its promises. India also needs to make its manufacturing industry less dependent on Chinese raw materials and get better at producing value-added products. India mostly exports raw materials like iron ore and cotton to China, which China can easily get from other countries, and imports finished goods like electronic items and solar panels. These are less easy to substitute because of their cheap prices. India’s dependence is hence, a huge vulnerability.

China is offering India a softball solution to the two countries’ staggering trade imbalance

Mumbai, Jan 22 () The Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) on Wednesday said it has extended USD 35.80 million (about Rs 250 crore) line of credit to Suriname government to fund the country's rural electrification programme.
 The line of credit (LOC) is meant for financing rural electrification through solar DG hybrid PV systems in 50 remote villages of Suriname, the bank said in a statement.
 With the latest round of funding, the Indian government has till date extended nine LOCs to Suriname, totalling USD 124.98 million (about Rs 890 crore). 
 The projects covered under LOCs extended to Suriname include power, water supply, purchase of helicopters, and rehabilitation and upgradation of milk processing plant.
 With this agreement, Exim Bank has now in place 258 LOCs covering 64 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the CIS, with credit commitments of around USD 25.48 billion available for financing exports from India. 
 Besides promoting India's exports, the bank's LOCs enable demonstration of Indian expertise and project execution capabilities in emerging markets. HV RVK

Mumbai, Jan 3 () India has extended a line of credit of USD 75 million (over Rs 500 crore) to Cuba for financing solar parks.An agreement signed between Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) and Banco Exterior De Cuba in July last year came into effect from December 12, the RBI said in a statement on Thursday.
 Banco Exterior De Cuba is a nominated agency of the Government of Cuba. 
"Exim Bank has entered into an agreement dated July 16, 2019 with Banco Exterior De Cuba, for making available to the latter, Government of India supported Line of Credit (LoC) of USD 75 million for the purpose of financing installation of 75 MW Photovoltaic Solar Parks in the Republic of Cuba," it said.
Under the LoC, The terminal utilisation period is 60 months after the scheduled completion date of the project.
As per the agreement, financing of export of eligible goods and services from India would be allowed subject to their being eligible for export under the Foreign Trade Policy.
Out of the total credit by Exim Bank under the agreement, goods, works and services of the value of at least 75 per cent of the contract price can be supplied by the seller from India, and the remaining 25 per cent of goods and services may be procured by the seller from outside India, the statement added.
