But his post had me wondering: Who has the original golden records?<h2>Tracking down the golden records</h2>NASA launched two golden records into space on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/voyager-spacecraft-mission-anniversary-discoveries-scientist-2024-3">Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 in 1977</a> as a way to teach other civilizations about life on Earth if they ever came across the probes. The twin spacecraft were launched over 40 years ago to explore the outer solar system.The golden records attached to the exterior of the spacecrafts, with visual instructions on how to play 115 images, spoken greetings in 55 languages, and variation of sounds from Earth, including a 90-minute music playlist, according to a post on NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).The 12-inch gold-plated copper disks also include a message from President Carter and U.N. Secretary-General Waldheim, according to NASA.When I started looking into the golden records, I noticed conflicting numbers for how many originals were created. There was a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ozmarecords/voyager-golden-record-40th-anniversary-edition">successful Kickstarter</a> to fund a box set of the record and they're now sold online starting at $88.But the original materials are for sale — and Jon Lomberg, the design director of the golden record, has all of the original images and other archival material from the golden record. He told BI he'd be happy to sell it to Musk."There's a way that you can feel, I think, a personal attachment to that project by knowing that this was the actual slide that the people that made the record used and looked at and argued over and decided to scan and send into space and it," Lomberg said.A personal copy of the master audio recording owned by the late Carl Sagan, the lead scientist of the project, went to auction at Sotheby's in July 2023, but didn't hit its reserve and wasn't sold. And it should be noted: not even Sagan himself got a copy of the original record.<h2>Voyager 1 and 2's ongoing mission</h2>Since launching, the spacecraft <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-close-up-photos-show-volcanoes-erupt-on-jupiters-moon-2024-2">discovered volcanoes on Jupiter's moon</a>, identified the intricacies of Saturn's rings, and took the first close-up photographs of Uranus and Neptune. JPL spokesperson Calla Cofield told BI that NASA doesn't have any updates on Voyager 1."The team continues information gathering and are preparing some steps that they're hopeful will get them on a path to either understanding the root of the problem and/or solving it," Cofield said.Voyager 2 is operating normally after brief communication issues last year, according to a NASA <a target="_blank" href="https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/news/details.php?article_id=130">update</a> posted in August.While the golden records on the Voyager spacecraft are expected to last over a billion years, Lomberg said the probes will probably crash on another planet or star eventually. What happened to the extra copies of the Voyager mission's golden records 

A group named "Hactivist <keyword id="8692" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="indonesia" source="Orion">Indonesia</keyword>" has claimed to have issued a list of 12,000 Indian government websites, including <keyword id="6378065" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="central" source="Orion">Central</keyword> and States, which it may attack in the coming days, an alert circulated by the Ministry of Home Affairs' Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) points. However, Indian government websites are "updated" and "capable" to handle such threats and narratives being spread by ill elements possibly operating within or outside the country, the alert has been circulated to all agencies, Central and State government wings. Issued on Thursday, the alert was circulated by the I4C based on the inputs received by its Cyber Threat Intelligence wing following its open-source intelligence. The narrative was detected by the Cyber Threat Intelligence wing of I4C about the 'Hacktivist Indonesia' group which has been involved in an illegal operation to hack Indian websites as well as those in some foreign countries too. The input was first shared with the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert.In), a nodal agency under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, who had requested to share the information with the nodal cyber-crime units in the States about the "potential threat". "A group named 'Hacktivist Indonesia' has been targetting India, and it has created a narrative that it will attack 12,0000 Indian government websites that include Central and those linked to States," said sources citing the alert circulated, adding "it is, however, not necessarily whether the group belongs to Indonesia." The group 'Hacktivist Indonesia' might be from "Malaysia or a set of different Islamic countries" because similar mindsets of people are trying to attack (India) using cyberspace, said the source. "The hacktivist group can also attack China or Ukraine. They also attack different countries," said the source, pointing "people from different countries are attacking in the ongoing illegal cyber operation and 'Hacktivist Indonesia' is among those group planning attack by using means of open source. "The 'Hacktivist Indonesia' has been attacking not only Indian websites but also the websites of other countries. They have circulated a list of 12,000 Indian government websites which they want to target. I4C unit through its open source intelligence alerted the Cert.In about such ongoing activities, suggesting to be aware." As per cyber experts in MHA, "this narrative has been going on since last year". "Such hackers attack government websites and try to slow down these websites using different means. However, government websites are updated. This is not a new thing. Last year too, similar attempts were made by such hackers to attack several websites in Gujarat. The hackers try to send heavy internet traffic to slow down the websites so that users get affected and they could not access or connected online services and sites," said the experts. "The hackers used to check government websites through Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack which is a cybercrime in which the attacker floods a server with internet traffic to prevent users from accessing connected online services and sites." If a person or organisation faces any cyber-attack, the matter can be reported on the cybercrime.gov.in website, they said, adding "a focussed work is being done with the help of I4C to curb such cyber menace in the Central agencies". Considering the threat perspective, the Central government has already informed the states through cyber-crime and cyber security how to protect their websites, a senior MHA official told requesting anonymity, and informed that "there is also a GIGW guideline which helps in keeping control on such illegal activities of the hackers". Making government websites more secure from cyber-attacks, <keyword id="6373306" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-informatics-centre" source="Orion">National Informatics Centre</keyword> (<keyword id="6369645" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nic" source="Orion">NIC</keyword>) formulated the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) in 2009 which aims to ensure the quality and accessibility of government guidelines, by offering guidance on desirable practices covering the entire lifecycle of websites, web portals and web applications, right from conceptualisation and design to their development, maintenance and management. The second version of the GIGW was developed in 2019. The third version of GIGW (GIGW 3.0) has also been introduced. The key thrust of GIGW 3.0 is on offering specific guidance to government organisations on how to improve the user interface and user experience (UI and UX), by incorporating features such as intuitive page loading (using AI and analytics) based on the user journey and user profile, using state-of-the-art content management system (CMS), user-centric information architecture (IA), centralised monitoring dashboard to identify and provide alerts on non-conformity and technical enablement of all content creators and publishers. GIGW 3.0 also significantly enhances the guidance on the accessibility and <keyword id="16766807" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="usability-of-mobile-apps" source="Orion">usability of mobile apps</keyword>, especially by offering specific guidance to government organisations on how to leverage public digital infrastructure devised for whole-of-government delivery of services, benefits and information. These cover aspects such as API level integration for use of integration with social media, India Portal, DigiLocker, Aadhaar-based identity, single sign-on, data sharing in open formats on the government's data platform, government's scheme discovery platform, government's citizen engagement platform MyGov, AI-based Indian language translation tools, seamless content/data access across web-based solutions of government organisations. GIGW 3.0 offers upgraded guidelines on the accessibility of websites and apps, with a view to making access to cyberspace more inclusive. It also guides on the prevention of leakage of sensitive information like passwords, email addresses and credit card details, which cause both personal embarrassment and financial risks. It deals with all aspects of security starting from design, coding and implementation to testing and deployment, which prevent malfunctioning, phishing, cyber-crimes or cyberattacks to avoid data loss of the organisations or users. An Apple filing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-documents-reveal-plan-to-train-experts-in-self-driving-cars-2017-4">obtained by Business Insider on Friday</a> through a public records request contained the names of six individuals that Apple names as the official "driver/operators" of these driverless vehicles.The filing with the California Department of Motor Vehicles provided the first public details about Apple's efforts testing self-driving cars, including brief descriptions of the car's "automated system" and a walk-through of the training program for test vehicle operators.The list of names in the filing made it clear that, over the last several years, Apple has been staffing up with experts holding PhDs in robotics and other related areas to advance its self-driving car efforts.But that list was apparently not supposed to be public.A spokesperson for the California DMV told Business Insider that these names were intended to be redacted from the document and asked that they not be published.Indeed, several of the individuals listed had no known public association with Apple, and no indication of their ties to Apple cited in their professional profiles on LinkedIn.<h2>Growing the ranks</h2>Apple has long sought to maintain a tight level of secrecy around the products under development in its labs and has never publicly acknowledged that it is working on self-driving car. Apple <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-officially-testing-self-driving-cars-california-dmv-confirms-2017-4">obtained permits to test self-driving cars</a> on California roads earlier this month, joining a crowded field of competitors including Google, Uber and Tesla. As the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/apple-permit-reveals-self-driving-car-testers-with-nasa-experience-1493042728">Wall Street Journal notes</a>, the fact that Apple is enlisting these senior-level engineers and PhDs to operate their cars could indicate that the program is still in its early stages. Historically, self-driving car programs like Google spin-out Waymo's only involve senior staff in day-to-day testing until the software is considered stable enough that others can take over. Furthermore, Business Insider hears from one industry insider that these PhDs are actually under the command of well-regarded professor Ruslan Salakhutdinov, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-hires-ruslan-salakhutdinov-artificial-intelligence-2016-10">company's first-ever Director of Artificial Intelligence, who joined the company in October 2016</a>.UberFor Uber and Alphabet's Waymo, LIDAR is a crucial technology for helping self-driving cars "see" the world around them.While it's generally assumed that Salakhutdinov was hired to do research into making Apple's software and services smarter overall, Business Insider is hearing that he's hiring a team of researchers that will be about 20 engineers when all is said and done, with a mandate to work almost entirely on self-driving car technology.Apple did not respond to a request for comment on this story at the time of publication.However, this tracks with Salakhutdinov's few public appearances since taking the role: In late 2016, <a href="https://qz.com/856546/inside-the-secret-meeting-where-apple-aapl-revealed-the-state-of-its-ai-research/">a presentation given by Apple's AI team</a> listed LIDAR, a crucial self-driving car technology, as an area of focus. And at a recent MIT Technology Review conference, Salakhutdinov's<a href="http://events.technologyreview.com/video/watch/ruslan-salakhutdinov-cmu-machine-learning/"> spoke at length about the importance of memory to navigation</a>.<h2>Meet the team</h2>In the filing, Apple names one Shilpa Gulati as one of its "autonomous vehicle driver/operators." On her <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/shilpagulati/">LinkedIn profile</a>, Gulati, who received her PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas, says she has been employed as a manager of special projects at a "Silicon Valley company" since 2015. In that role, she writes, "she developed the vision and built an organization of ~30 world class researchers and engineers." It's not clear if Gulati is referring to the same research team now led by Salakhutdinov. In 2009, Gulari worked on a NASA-backed project to design a self-driving underwater vehicle that could potentially explore moons like Jupiter's watery Europa.NASAStone Aerospace's ENDURANCE, a NASA-backed project to build a self-driving underwater vehicle to explore watery moons like Jupiter's Europa.The permit also names former Tesla engineer and <a href="https://explorecourses.stanford.edu/instructor/cgadda">Stanford PhD Christopher David Gadda</a>, former NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory robotics engineer <a href="https://www-robotics.jpl.nasa.gov/people/Paul_Hebert/personFull.cfm">Paul Hebert</a> PhD, and <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/David_Rosas2/publications">control systems PhD David Rosas</a>, none of whom list an association with Apple on their public-facing online presences. Finally, Apple engineers Victor Hwang and Jeremy Ma, both also formerly robotics engineers with NASA JPL, are listed in the filing.<h2>The bigger picture</h2>Apple's work in the automotive world is an open secret in the industry, but the company remains tight-lipped about its progress. "It's going to be Christmas Eve for a while," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tim-cook-on-apple-car-its-going-to-be-christmas-eve-for-a-while-2016-2">Apple CEO Tim Cook said in February 2016</a>, indicating that the company wasn't yet ready to divulge its plans.Apple has what appears to be a mostly separate organization of 1,000 employees working on what it calls "Project Titan" in Sunnyvale, California and other satellite offices.
