<ul class="summary-list"><li>"Arcane," a television adaptation of Riot Games' "League of Legends," is back on Netflix.</li><li>The series was created by Christopher Linke and Alexander Yee, two Riot vets with no TV experience.</li></ul>In 2010, "Arcane" co-creator Christian Linke needed to make a change.The German-born musician had spent years playing bass in the German rock band Panik and working as a songwriter and producer. But by 2010, he was starting to have doubts about the music business — and in turn, the longevity of his career — as he observed musicians using personal computers to produce their own tracks.So he left music, packed up his life, and moved to Los Angeles. When he arrived, he landed a customer support job that he had found on Craigslist. Though he didn't know it at the time, that job set him on a career path that would lead to his first Emmy award 12 years later.The gig was at Riot Games, a young video game company founded in 2006 that had launched its debut title "League of Legends" the year before. These days, "League" is one of the most-played PC games in the world, with Riot announcing it had hit 180 million monthly active players in 2021. But back then, Riot was small, and "League" was still a fresh title. And luckily for Linke, an early "League of Legends" player, it had thousands of unanswered German-language customer support tickets languishing in the queue."Somehow they hired me," Linke told Business Insider. "I think because, of all the people that interviewed, I was the only one that actually spoke German."Fourteen years later, the now-creative director has graduated from answering tickets to running one of TV's most successful video game adaptations. "Arcane," which Linke created with fellow long-term Rioter Alexander Yee, premiered on Netflix in November 2021. By the time its first season finished airing, it had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflixs-league-of-legends-series-arcane-surges-in-popularity-2021-11">racked up millions of viewing hours</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/tv?week=2021-11-21">hit No. 1</a> on Netflix's global top 10 English-language television list.It wasn't much of a surprise when Netflix announced it had renewed "Arcane" for a second season the minute season one wrapped. Aside from winning <a target="_blank" href="https://www.emmys.com/shows/arcane">four Emmy Awards</a>, including outstanding animated program, it had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/arcane_league_of_legends/s01">near-universal critical acclaim</a>. For good reason: its focused, character-driven story and distinct visual identity, courtesy of French animation studio Fortiche, make it accessible and riveting television for newcomers and longtime "League" fans alike.But before the show was a hit, it was a passion project that Linke and Yee started working on in 2015 — one borne out of their tenures at Riot and the relative creative freedom they were afforded during the company's ascension."When we started the project, there was no adaptation that had ever succeeded," Linke told BI of his and Yee's plan to create a series based on the game. "But it didn't really matter because the desire was always very clear. After a stint in the billing department, he eventually moved over to data analysis, working cross-functionally across different teams.But in 2011, he noticed an opportunity for the company to invest more in music projects — think <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18yK0G9hHts">character theme songs</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nlJuwO0GDs">music videos</a>, and "League" inspired bands — and in turn, to leverage his own creative background."No one was asking for it," Linke said, but no one was stopping him either. By 2015, Linke had built a team underneath him, and had proven himself within the company. What he lacked was a challenge.The same was true of Yee, who had pivoted to creative design at the company. Together, after years of playing in different creative sandboxes within the "League" universe, they began conceptualizing the television show that would become "Arcane."It was unprecedented work at Riot, which at the time had yet to expand into any traditional television or film projects."We had to really take baby steps," Linke said. "We had to not just build the creative, but also, the way to convince leaders who have never worked on a TV show and invested in a TV show. After about a year and a half of work, the company committed to making a pilot episode in 2016 — and clearly, it worked out well for them in the end.Still, Linke and Yee took risks along the way, chief among them betting on the French production studio Fortiche. Prior to "Arcane," the studio had worked on music videos and promotional materials for Riot and artists like the Gorillaz, as well as some television projects. But none matched the scale of what "Arcane" would become: nine episodes in its first season, animated at a quality reminiscent of film rather than television."People were very concerned about it, but what Fortiche had that you cannot fix with money is passion," Linke said. "I knew they would put their life on pause to make the greatest thing of their career with this project, and I worked with other animation studios where that's simply not the case. It's a gig, but Fortiche had something to prove."<h2 id="78b8acb1-059c-4fb7-8d4e-7f15172f982b">'Arcane' was an expensive labor of love that Riot hasn't yet replicated — but it's a great proof of concept</h2>Nine years after Linke and Yee began to work on "Arcane" in 2015, the series is ending after two nine-episode seasons. The project didn't come without significant expenses: Fortiche's feature-quality animation meant that production moved at a slower pace more typical of animated film rather than animated television.Citing sources familiar with production, <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2024/gaming/news/riot-games-arcane-hollywood-netflix-most-expensive-animated-series-ever-1236196655/">Variety</a> recently reported that the show's first season cost upward of $80 million to make, and its second close to $100 million. (Riot didn't immediately respond to BI's request for comment regarding the reported cost of "Arcane.")Even if Riot doesn't directly turn a profit on the series, that may not be the company's chief goal, anyway. Film and television isn't Riot Games' primary business; video games like "League of Legends" are. A genuinely good television series like "Arcane" not only engages current players who may spend money on in-game cosmetics, but brings new eyes to the franchise. By putting the first major "League" adaptation in the hands of people who knew it best and cared about getting it right, "Arcane" sets a precedent for how to make something beloved by fans and critics alike. Reportedly steep production costs and a lengthy timeline gave them the time and space to do so — even if, as Linke told <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2021/11/06/arcane-netflix-league-legends/">The Washington Post</a> ahead of season one, it meant burning a "massive hole in Riot's wallet."Ultimately, Linke says the show was a product of "selfish desire." The fact that it's motivated by passion, and not pragmatism, is why it's so good."For us, we love the game," he said. "We wanted to see those characters come alive. That's it. IPL Auction 2024: Australia captain Pat Cummins becomes most expensive player in IPL history

Lower-end consumers are particularly cutting back.</li></ul>A slate of fast-food companies have reported earnings over the last three weeks — and it's painting a bleak picture of the American consumer.Executives have referred to "more cost-conscious consumers" and "challenging consumer environments," which in many cases led to a slump in comparable sales growth.At McDonald's, comparable US sales fell 0.7% in the quarter year-over-year, compared to 10.3% growth in the same period the prior year. At Starbucks, US comparable sales were down 2% in the quarter, versus the 7% increase it posted a year ago.KFC, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, and Firehouse Subs also reported a drop in same-store sales growth.At some chains including Burger King, Popeyes, and Wendy's, sales at comparable US restaurants increased compared to the same period in 2023, but at a much slower rate.<h2 id="697c5266-335d-4b1e-a9a6-e46646386dda">Lower-income earners are cutting back</h2>Part of the decline in comparable sales is simply because of a return to pre-COVID operating trends, Jefferies restaurant analyst Andy Barish told Business Insider. At some chains, sales boomed during the pandemic.But consumers are penny-pinching, too.Consumers say a big part of the reason they're cutting back on fast food is because <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fast-food-is-expensive-people-annoyed-eating-out-restaurant-2024">it doesn't feel like such good value for money anymore</a>. The prices of both groceries and restaurants rose at accelerated rates after the pandemic started. Grocery inflation has since cooled, but <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-fast-food-is-so-much-more-expensive-value-affordable-2024-4">inflation at fast-food restaurants is still above pre-pandemic levels</a>.In particular, chains have said that it's lower-end consumers who are cutting back."The low-end consumer has continued to feel pressure and that's been going on for more than a year now," Barish said. Some are placing smaller fast-food orders while <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fast-food-expensive-americans-cook-at-home-visit-independent-restaurants-2024-5">others are buying more groceries instead</a>, he said."What's unusual is that you get a couple of the big players like McDonald's and Starbucks that are having negative traffic right now," Barish said. "And that's something we don't typically see even in these kind of environments where those brands would be typically gaining share."Edward Jones analyst Brian Yarbrough told BI that typically during a slowdown, lower-end consumers trade out of fast food while middle- and higher-income consumers trade in at a rate that "more than offsets" the loss of lower-earning diners.But fast-food chains have raised prices "so much," causing the gap between fast-food and fast-casual prices to shrink, that not enough higher earners are trading down into fast food to offset the trade out, he said.And for some chains, it doesn't look like they expect spending to rebound anytime soon."We expect customers will continue to feel the pinch of the economy and a higher cost of living for at least the next several quarters in this very competitive landscape," Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald's US, told investors in July.It's not bad news for every fast-food and fast-casual chain, though. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://ir.wingstop.com/wingstop-inc-reports-fiscal-second-quarter-2024-financial-results/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1723214874375739&amp;usg=AOvVaw2uUHbGwp8PqY0ksMQ5LT0N">Wingstop</a>, for example, said that same-store US sales grew 28.7% in the quarter, up from 16.8% for the same period the year before. Joshua Kobza, CEO of Restaurant Brands International, which owns Burger King, Popeyes, Tim Hortons, and Firehouse Subs, used the word nine times in his opening remarks at the company's August earnings call.Fast-food chains have been trying to lure cash-strapped diners in with combo deals and value menus. It's been the summer of the $5 deal: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-mcdonalds-5-dollar-meal-deal-pulling-in-customers-inflation-2024-7">McDonald's</a>, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burger-king-launches-5-dollar-value-meal-before-mcdonalds-months-2024-5">Burger King</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.kfc.com/newsroom/kfc-introduces-new-taste-of-kfc-deals">KFC</a> have launched combo deals for five bucks.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-bundling-breakfast-combo-deals-sandwich-croissant-tea-coffee-meal-2024-6">Even Starbucks is getting into bundling</a>.Barish, the Jefferies analyst, said that the recent focus on value menus and bundled meals represented a return to a normal pre-COVID promotional environment.Executives say the bundles have performed well — both McDonald's and Burger King said that their $5 deals had been selling especially well among lower-income consumers and that the average transaction that included the combo meal came to more than $10 because diners added other items to their orders.The challenge is that the value deals have to drive enough traffic to offset the lower prices. Restaurant revenues are determined by average check size and number of orders. With the value deals, "you got to drive enough traffic to offset the pricing pressure, and that's going to be the toughest part," Yarbrough, the Edward Jones analyst, said.Consumers should expect to see even more promotions in the fall, Northcoast Research analyst Jim Sanderson told BI. My friends and I kept busy after graduation playing a made-up sort of paddleball, but when we discovered <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/top-pickleballer-is-a-15-year-old-whos-dominating-the-competition">pickleball</a> the next year, we were completely hooked.I got into the game at just the right time. In 2016, I participated in the first US Open <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/senior-pickleball-daily-diet-exercise-routine-longevity-health-tips-2023-5">Pickleball</a> Championship. At the time, there was no prize money and few crowds — we played for the love of the game. That was enough for me.Since then, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/i-tried-pickleball-rules-court-paddles-2023-7">pickleball has exploded</a>. Now, we have sponsorships and prize money, and I'm living the professional sports career that I thought was out of reach.Even on the professional level, pickleball is unique. It's not cut-throat the way professional tennis is. Although we're all very competitive on the court, we're family and friends off the court. That's an awesome feeling.I adore pickleball, and I don't think you have to play like a pro to get the benefits of this sport. Here's what everyone should know before they step onto the court.<h2>Pickleball is an easy sport to pick up</h2>To be successful in tennis, you need to start young, investing in lots of expensive coaching and lessons. You have to refine your technique. But pickleball is easy to pick up, even if you're in your 30s, 40s, or 50s.So, don't be intimidated. If you've been wondering what the craze is about, buy some paddles and give it a try with your family. Drop into a beginners' club class, hire a coach, or watch YouTube videos about techniques. Pickleball is a great way to do something healthy for your body while still having lots of fun along the way.<h2>It's accessible to lots of people</h2>Pickleball can be very physically demanding. As someone who plays five days a week or more, I can attest to that. But it's also accessible to people who aren't at their physical peak. You can still have fun playing pickleball at a slower pace that's fit for grandparents or people recovering from an injury. Or, you can turn up the intensity and have a sweaty, intense competition.<h2>The social aspect is key</h2>Most pickleball players will tell you the social aspect is just as important to them as the game itself. Pickleball is a great sport because everyone can play together. Kids can hit with their parents and grandparents. Guys and girls can play with each other. It doesn't have to be as formal as tennis — you can just have fun along the way.<h2>Build your partner up</h2>Playing doubles with a partner is a great way to increase the social aspect of the game. Today, I play double with my boyfriend, but we were pickleball partners before we were ever romantically involved. I make an effort always to remember that we're on the same team. It's easy to get frustrated with your partner sometimes, but if they miss a shot, they're already feeling down. So, be encouraging rather than harsh.<h2>Don't overlook warmups and cool-downs</h2>Because pickleball is so accessible, you might think that you can skip the warmups or cool-downs. That's definitely not the case. Unfortunately, I've read that doctors are<a target="_blank" href="https://www.dcnewsnow.com/whats-going-around/whats-going-around-doctors-seeing-more-pickleball-injuries-and-how-to-prevent-them/"> treating</a> a lot more pickleball-related injuries as more and more people try the sport. To keep yourself healthy, warming up and cooling down before and after matches are key. Even spending 5-10 minutes stretching and walking can make a big difference.<h2>Prioritize your recovery</h2>Whether you're playing at a professional level or just getting started with a new pickleball routine, you're asking a lot from your body. In return, you have to give it time to recover. But it's always challenging to try something new. So, be patient with yourself. Don't expect to nail pickleball your first time on the court—or even your tenth. Instead, focus on having fun and building your community and skills. By doing that, you'll discover a sport that you can enjoy for a lifetime.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Urban golf courses are used by a fraction of city residents, but take up a ton of space and resources. </li><li>Many states subsidize golf courses with low property taxes, so non-golfers are footing the bill. </li></ul>San Francisco's 18-hole Presidio Golf Course sits in some of the most prized land in the country: a national park.Combined with eight other courses in the city — where a severe housing shortage has helped push the median home price to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2023/10/21/less-home-for-more-money-home-prices-rise-as-buyers-swallow-higher-interest-rates/#:~:text=The%20median%20home%20price%20in,the%20California%20Association%20of%20Realtors."> $1.3 million</a> — golf takes up <a target="_blank" href="https://priceonomics.com/why-does-san-francisco-have-so-many-golf-courses/">over 700 acres.</a> To put that in perspective, Manhattan's Central Park is 843 acres.When the pandemic hit, golfing was paused and the 150-acre Presidio course <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/california-san-francisco-golf-course-public-park-coronavirus-2020-4">opened up to anyone who wanted to walk, hike, jog, or bike</a> through it without fearing they'd be knocked out by an errant ball. This opened up access to many San Franciscans who'd never set foot in one of the most beautiful green spaces in their city, simply because they don't, or can't afford to, play golf.That begged the question for some: why is a massive green space paid for by taxpayers, but closed off to most? As the co-founder of Vimeo, Zach Klein, tweeted after a walk through the course on April 25, 2020, "It was intoxicating to be there and consider the possibility of this remaining a park forever. It would be an instant classic, an immense open space in America's second densest city." Urban and suburban golf courses are one of the least efficient and equitable ways to use densely-populated land. Many urban planners see them as a golden opportunity to address worsening homelessness, a housing affordability crisis, and a shortage of green space. Repurposing golf courses could offer cities a pressure relief valve."Golf courses are kind of a blessing in disguise because we have all of these problems related to urbanism and the housing crisis and social isolation," Tayana Panova, a researcher who studies the built environment, told Insider, "and then we have golf courses, which are these places that are right smack dab in the middle of some of the areas that have these crises to the highest level."<div type="image" title="Aerial view of a golf course in San Francisco, California." height="1979" width="3000" msid="104987791" hostid="261" sizebytes="568854"></div>Urban golf courses also cost taxpayers — even those who don't play — a lot of money. In about half of US states, golf courses are heavily subsidized through property tax breaks. In California, a 1960 law ensures golf courses aren't taxed based on their "highest and best use" as other land is, and instead get a special tax break just for being golf courses. They also benefit from Prop 13, the state's famous law sharply limiting property taxes, particularly on property that doesn't change hands.Golf courses are, by the nature of the game, some of the most underused spaces in a city. No more than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ngcoa.org/golf-business-weekly/2020/november/week-3/multifunctional-courses">about 300 players</a> can use a typical 18-hole golf course in one day. The Presidio Golf Course has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sfexaminer.com/archives/constructive-criticism-keep-sf-golf-courses-closed/article_69475223-7175-5410-9a1a-cf105b8ae739.html">just 1,200 visitors per acre each year</a>, while San Francisco's nearby Golden Gate Park welcomes 24,000 visitors per acre annually. Any other sport — from football to pickleball — is a more efficient use of space. A single golf course could be home to thousands of people if there were housing on it.Developers and land trusts have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/american-golf-courses-redevelopment-transformations-2018-8#the-country-club-was-left-uncared-for-after-it-officially-closed-3">managed to buy up</a> some defunct courses and add commercial buildings or turn them into parks. But golfers and neighbors are making any change a major challenge.<h2>Inequitable and expensive</h2>While golf has diversified over the years, it's still <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theringer.com/2021/4/7/22370057/golf-diversity-issues-history-pga-lpga-the-masters">disproportionately played by affluent, older, white men</a>. Several exclusive golf clubs even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.si.com/golf-archives/2019/07/01/private-golf-clubs-muirfield-augusta-women-discrimination">still prohibit women from becoming members</a>.The famous Los Angeles Country Club, which was founded in 1897 and sits on 313 acres in super-affluent Beverly Hills, <a target="_blank" href="https://newrepublic.com/article/173714/yet-another-golf-scandal-woefully-undertaxed-la-country-club-us-open#:~:text=In%201960%2C%20Hope%2C%20an%20avid,use%20as%20a%20golf%20course.">admitted its first Jewish members in 1977 and its first Black member in 1991</a>. Malcolm Gladwell noted <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pushkin.fm/podcasts/revisionist-history/a-good-walk-spoiled">in a 2017 podcast</a> that the club, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars to join, sits on about $9 billion worth of land. If it were taxed as homeowners are, it would owe <a target="_blank" href="https://www.laweekly.com/we-should-raise-taxes-on-these-3-things-to-pay-for-healthcare-and-parks/">between $60 to $90 million</a> in annual property taxes. Instead, the club pays <a target="_blank" href="https://defector.com/the-los-angeles-country-club-owes-l-a-more-than-just-a-good-u-s-open">about $300,000 a year</a> in taxes.<div type="image" title="Scottie Scheffler playing golf at the US Open at The Los Angeles Country Club in Los Angeles, CA" height="2000" width="3000" msid="104987792" hostid="261" sizebytes="141614"></div>"Whether you're a pure market person and think we need to just do what the market wants, or you're very much about equity and supporting equitable access to space, you should be united on this one," Mitchell Reardon, director of urban planning at the Canadian design firm Happy Cities, told Insider.Golf has also gotten a lot less popular over the last two decades. Before a pandemic-induced uptick, the sport had been on a steady decline since the 2008 financial crisis. About a third of public golf courses <a target="_blank" href="https://golfweek.usatoday.com/2021/06/16/golf-industry-municipal-courses-us-open/">lost money in 2019</a>. In golf-obsessed Florida, municipal golf courses <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tcpalm.com/story/news/local/shaping-our-future/growth/2018/04/18/florida-municipal-golf-courses-have-lost-nearly-100-m-over-past-five-years/407554002/">lost almost $100 million</a> between 2013 and 2018. Proponents of retrofitting courses note that reducing the number of golf courses would help boost revenue for courses that do survive. Indeed, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ngf.org/are-we-there-yet/">business is looking better</a> since <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2019/06/05/730057491/there-arent-enough-golfers-to-keep-all-of-the-u-s-courses-in-business">course closures peaked in 2019</a>. Urban golf courses work against the advantages of cities, taking up valuable space and making walkability and environmental sustainability much harder to achieve."The whole virtue of cities is that you can build places at a much lower cost of infrastructure per capita," Ray Delahanty, a former urban planner who runs the popular <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/@CityNerd">CityNerd YouTube channel</a>, told Insider. "And so when you have big open spaces in the form of golf courses," particularly when they're close to transit, "it's really wasteful. It conflicts with a lot of the climate goals that cities have, which often drive the rezoning and redevelopment around transit stations."<h2>Not on my golf course</h2>When she was running for mayor of Toronto in 2018, Jennifer Keesmaat <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/jennifer-keesmaat-golf-courses-public-spaces-proposal-1.4854524">proposed</a> remaking three city golf courses into public parks. The former chief city planner noted that interest in golf had flatlined in Toronto, while demand for cricket pitches, off-leash dog parks, and other amenities had surged."So many of our parks are absolutely jam-packed with people on any sunny day all summer long," Keesmaat told Insider. "But then on the flip side, we have these public golf courses that are just these almost vacuous spaces that are quite underutilized."Keesmaat lost that election and the city courses haven't been redeveloped, but <a target="_blank" href="https://www.toronto.com/news/proposed-development-will-transform-north-york-golf-course-into-40-acre-public-park/article_edfec77b-896e-573f-a7e4-c142f481d5b4.html?">plans are in motion</a> to transform a private course into four apartment towers and 40 acres of public parkland. She argues that rethinking golf courses is just part of "the natural evolution of ensuring that the public amenities we have are fitting with the broader public interest."<div type="image" title="Don Valley golf course in Toronto, Ontario, Canada" height="2000" width="3000" msid="104987793" hostid="261" sizebytes="1616630"></div>Actually getting a golf course redeveloped into public space and housing is a major challenge. First, there needs to be a buyer. Then that buyer needs to find funding. And finally, in many cases, the parcel needs to be rezoned — often a political and highly-fraught process.Charlie McCabe, the former director of the Center for City Park Excellence at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tpl.org/">Trust for Public Land</a>, told Insider that the most successful golf course redevelopment efforts he's seen have involved private developers buying a course, building housing, and giving a portion of the land back to the city for green space. He noted that projects that just involve turning golf courses into parks are often most palatable to neighbors.In one shining example, part of an abandoned golf course in New Orleans was transformed into <a target="_blank" href="https://growdatyouthfarm.org/">the city's biggest urban farm</a> with a focus on engaging youth.But there are a mountain of examples of failed efforts. In one such case, Denver voters recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.axios.com/local/denver/2023/04/05/denver-election-park-hill-golf-course-vote-results">rejected a plan</a> to build hundreds of homes — 25% of which would have been for lower-income residents — on a 155-acre former golf course. Shortly thereafter, the City Council reversed its efforts to redevelop the Park Hill Golf Course, rezoning it as open space with the goal of <a target="_blank" href="https://denverite.com/2023/05/03/park-hill-golf-course-rezoning-18-hole-course/">turning it back into an 18-hole course</a>. Predictably, homeowners — who see golf courses as good for their property values — were <a target="_blank" href="https://coloradosun.com/2023/10/13/opinion-it-might-actually-be-the-nimbys/">much more likely</a> to oppose redeveloping the course than renters.Former California Assemblymember Cristina Garcia, a Democrat who represented parts of southeastern Los Angeles County, introduced a bill in 2021 that would have given cities funding to convert public golf courses into housing and public park space."Even if all you did was take down the fence and give us a park, that is a gift to the community," she <a target="_blank" href="https://soundcloud.com/matt-levin-4/gimme-shelter-what-if-california-put-affordable-housing-on-golf-courses">said on the podcast Gimme Shelter</a> last year.The pushback to the legislation from golfers and other NIMBYs was fierce and the effort failed."There's no group more motivated than retired or semi-retired people," McCabe said.Despite what "<a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/SamMaggs/status/1366450739321602048">anti-golf Twitter</a>" says, proponents of redevelopment don't necessarily want to abolish the sport — they just want golf to take up less space in dense places.This could mean shrinking 18-hole courses to nine holes, putting a grocery store in a clubhouse, or opening up the course on weekends or at night."Why not at least try and meet cities and other neighboring communities in the middle by offering more activities to take place within that space?" Reardon said.

The Guardian reported that a flight from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2019/jul/19/carbon-calculator-how-taking-one-flight-emits-as-much-as-many-people-do-in-a-year">London to New York generates about 986 kilograms of CO2</a> per passenger. It would take the average American 27 days to emit that much CO2, according to data from the <a target="_blank" href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/EN.ATM.CO2E.PC?locations=US">World Bank</a>.With an average of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/by_the_numbers">45,000 daily flights</a> in the US alone, it's no wonder that almost every major airline and manufacturer has committed to reaching net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.But debates are still ongoing as to how airlines can achieve this and which technologies will be most impactful.<h2>The carrot versus the stick in sustainable aviation</h2>SAF was a major topic of discussion when Business Insider visited the Dubai Airshow last month.One phrase that kept popping up in conversations was "carrots versus sticks" — whether fiscal incentives or legal mandates are better at promoting SAF.In Europe, there's a preference for mandates. The European Union is lobbying for an international tax on traditional jet fuels rather than SAF at COP 28 climate-crisis conference, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/9ed06437-fb5e-40f6-9123-4d39b6b15789">Financial Times</a> reported. But that money isn't guaranteed to be reinvested into sustainable aviation.And from 2025, the <a target="_blank" href="https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_23_2389">RefuelEU Aviation</a> initiative mandates aircraft fuel suppliers to provide EU airports with a minimum share of 2% SAF, increasing to 75% by 2050. Airlines will also be prohibited from deliberately carrying excess fuel to avoid refueling with SAF.This ups demand, but doesn't necessarily advance SAF production. The EU's Aviation Safety Agency says the maximum potential <a target="_blank" href="https://www.easa.europa.eu/eco/eaer/topics/sustainable-aviation-fuels/current-landscape-future-saf-industry">SAF production</a> in the bloc is currently only 10% of what's needed to fulfill proposed mandates by 2030.According to the IATA, SAF is twice as expensive as conventional aviation fuel.The US prefers the incentive, or the carrot: This strategy can stimulate more growth by rewarding SAF producers but lacks longevity and could come crashing down with a change in administration.<div type="image" title="Flight100, Virgin Atlantic's world first 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) transatlantic flight by a commercial airline is fueled ahead of its take off from London Heathrow to New York JFK on Tuesday 28 November 2023." height="4480" width="6720" msid="105762692" hostid="261" sizebytes="749316"></div>Most airshow panelists strongly favored the carrot and loathed the stick.Some rare positivity about mandates came from Julie Kitcher, an executive vice president at Airbus who will take on the role of chief sustainability officer at the company starting January 1."I'm a big fan of both," she told Business Insider. "We're a big advocate of having mandates and incentives to be able to stimulate the supply and demand."She said "we've really got to break that vicious cycle" of the limited supply and high demand that leads to high prices.<h2>Different perspectives at Airbus and Boeing</h2>"We have to have SAF to get us to net zero, but there's questions about what else," Jim Hileman, the vice president and chief engineer for sustainability at Boeing, said during a panel. "Are there other things that we should be pursuing?"One major project at Airbus is ZEROe. It's focused on developing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-new-zero-emission-aircraft-history-of-sustainable-planes-2020-9">hydrogen-powered aircraft</a> that the company hopes to put to market by 2035.Hydrogen doesn't emit carbon like fossil fuels do, but it also relies on new infrastructure. Kitcher told BI that such airplanes will require airports to store liquid hydrogen for fueling, which needs to be kept at -400 degrees Fahrenheit.<a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/2023/01/26/boeings-chief-sustainability-officer-we-cant-count-on-hydrogen-powered-commercial-flights-before-2050/">Boeing isn't focusing much on hydrogen</a> and seems skeptical of Airbus' hopes.While onstage at the Dubai Airshow, Hileman posited a host of questions about hydrogen-powered aircraft: "Can you safely operate the aircraft? What does the infrastructure look like? But Kitcher told BI that Airbus sees it as a "lot of opportunities to develop technology."She acknowledged that "we're not going to fly transatlantic on hydrogen anytime soon." But said the project will show "technological readiness" that can scale in the future.Boeing's sustainable-aircraft innovations include <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boeing-backed-wisk-aero-be-first-to-market-with-its-air-taxi-see-inside-2022-10">Wisk Aero</a>, an eVTOL, or electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing, company; and the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/next-generation-experimental-aircraft-becomes-nasas-newest-x-plane/">X-66A</a>, a plane it's working on in collaboration with NASA that's only expected to reduce fuel consumption by up to 30%.<h2>Newer airplanes are more fuel-efficient</h2>Kitcher told BI that as well as working on new technologies and transitioning to new energy sources, fleet renewal can have a big impact on climate goals.When a plane reaches the end of its lifespan, the airline replaces it with a newer, more fuel-efficient model — typically from Boeing or Airbus.<div type="image" title="An Airbus A321XLR plane takes off for its first flight from the Airbus plant in Hamburg, northern Germany, on June 15, 2022" height="2774" width="4675" msid="105762694" hostid="261" sizebytes="279834"></div>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbus-a321xlr-will-be-a-game-changer-2023-7">Airbus A321XLR</a> — set to enter service in 2024 — is a narrow-body jet capable of flying up to 11 hours nonstop, opening up new routes that would be uneconomical if carriers used wide-body jets.According to Kitcher, replacing a Boeing 737 with an Airbus A321XLR would reduce CO2 emissions by 25%."So it's a pretty impressive lever, particularly when you consider that today only 25% of the world's fleet is flying on latest-generation technology," she told BI.Boeing says that its newer <a target="_blank" href="https://www.boeing.com/commercial/737max/">737 MAX</a> models can reduce CO2 emissions by 20% compared to predecessors.There are several different routes and myriad technologies companies are using to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Which bets are the most impactful may not be obvious for another few years.
