When in cartridge form, it's more expensive than vintage Champagne and even human blood. In fact, it can be cheaper to buy an entire printer than it is to purchase new ink cartridges. So why is printer ink so expensive?Let's start with the first printers. No, not that far. No. Come on. There we go. Inkjet printers were first developed in the 1960s, and early computer inks were made from food dye and water. Because of this, they would fade after a few months, so companies had to develop a dye that gave permanent photographic quality. In 1988, Hewlett-Packard achieved just that, with the first mass-market inkjet printer, which sold for about $1,000. But a lot has changed since then.Today, you can buy a brand-new printer for around $35. But there's a catch. When the ink runs out in one of these printers, you need to buy specific cartridges, and these cartridges are expensive. So why are the cartridges so pricey?David Connett: Oh that's simple: greed. And an outdated razor-and-blades model.Narrator: This is David Connett. He's the former editor of The Recycler and has been lobbying for change in the printer-ink industry for years.Connett: They sell the printers cheap. They sell the consumables at a very expensive price. And basically it's a formula: The cheaper the printer, the more expensive the consumables.Narrator: Once you've bought a printer that uses cartridges you're trapped in a cycle. You have no choice but to buy them, or throw away your printer. As a printer is typically a one-time purchase, companies don't mind selling them at a loss and making the money back through cartridge sales. The HP Envy 4520 all-in-one printer, for example, sells for $70 but is estimated to cost $120 to manufacture. The loss they make on printers means that companies need to sell ink cartridges to make a profit, and this model has led to a battleground between printer manufacturers and third-party ink suppliers. The companies do everything they can to keep you buying official ink cartridges. Manufacturers install microchips into their cartridges and frequently issue firmware updates to prevent the use of third-party ink, which can be more affordable.Connett: Last year, almost 900 firmware upgrades were issued by just nine printer manufacturers, so that's almost three a day. I mean, that's just, like, either absolute incompetence, 'cause you've got to do it so much, or it is a definite stealth tactic to control the market.Narrator: Printer companies attribute the high costs to the research and development that goes into perfecting printer ink. The materials they use, however, cost very little.Connett: The manufacturing cost of ink is between €20 and €40 a liter.Narrator: And a lot of the ink you buy never even gets used for printing. According to a 2018 test by Consumer Reports, more than half the ink you buy could end up lost in maintenance cycles for cleaning the printheads. And printers that use multiple-color ink cartridges also stop working as soon as one color runs out, even if the other colors are still full. These days, you're getting even less for your money. While the cartridges themselves are the same size and price, they often contain far less ink inside than they used to. The ink in many manufacturers' cartridges has shrunk from 20 mil to around 5 mil over the past few years, without any reduction in price. The original-size 20 mil cartridges are often still on sale but are often sold as extra-large cartridges for even more money. And some new cartridges can have as little as 3 milliliters of ink inside. Some companies have now even started ink subscriptions, deactivating your cartridges remotely if you print more than your allocated pages. Laser printers offer a lower-cost alternative to inkjet but produce a lower-quality printed image. The real solution for many, though, would be to offer more-efficient ink cartridges.Connett: This product, you know, can be better engineered. They could liaise with the aftermarket to actually, you know, find a solution that works for everybody because, you know, this, ultimately, this is bad for the consumer, because it's overpriced and expensive, and it's bad for the environment, because it doesn't need to be made that way.Narrator: We reached out to Canon and HP for comment. Printer companies use an outdated business model so you pay more for ink cartridges than for the printer itself

This is an age-long question – should we buy a new ink cartridge or go for a refill? While the companies want us to buy a new one every time the ink cartridge finishes, there are times when going for an alternate method yields better results. There are numerous <keyword id="53666" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Printer">printer</keyword> manufacturers present in India. <keyword id="6367983" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="HP">HP</keyword> is the most popular brand and is leading the <keyword id="47445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-market">Indian market</keyword> with over 50% market share; <keyword id="37530" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Canon">Canon</keyword> is in the second spot with over 20%, followed by Epson and <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> (Gartner report). 
 
However, what most people do not know is that the printer companies do not make much profit by selling a printer, the real profit lies in the printer ink business. A customer will buy a printer once in three to five years; however, they buy ink cartridges/refills two to three times in a year. The companies’ research extensively to provide customers with best inks and at the same time, try to keep the costs low. The deskjet printer segment has come a long way. If we look back, the inks offered by these companies half a decade ago were quite expensive to acquire. But now things are changing and the companies are offering cheaper yet efficient inks that last for longer. 
 
So, how much does it cost? 
The market for refill inks has been quite forceful since a long time. One can get a three colour deskjet refill from places such as Nehru Place in Delhi for as low as Rs 90. Many opt for this because it does not cost much. However, the original inks prices are coming down gradually to lure the customer back to original inks. 
 
HP says they have introduced high yield cartridges priced between Rs 475 and Rs 546. These inks give you over 1,500 pages and do not harm the printers. As a third option, there are Chinese ink tanks available in the market as well. These are not as cheap as the refills but are not as expensive as the original cartridges, they are somewhere in between. However, we do not suggest you go for them as the print results are very poor and in many cases they destroy the printers. 
 
What are the perils of <keyword id="2015391" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Refill-Ink">refill ink</keyword>? This is by far the most important question one can ask before opting for a refill ink. The bright side of opting for a refill is the price. They are inexpensive, but it does have a set of flaws attached to it. If the cartridge is not refilled by a professional, the <keyword id="2015397" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="ink-Tank">ink tank</keyword> might start leaking in the printer and obliterate it from further use. 
 Another point one has to consider is that the refill inks will never give you the same results as an <keyword id="2015396" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Original-ink">original ink</keyword> cartridge will give you. Even if you print at the best settings it will not be great. At times the cartridge or the printer might just reject the refilled ink cartridge. The printers are programmed to recognise the original and duplicate inks. 
 
Though 95% of the times the printer will let you print with the refilled cartridge, the desktop software will not show the ink levels and other related features. Hence, you will never know when you have to again go for a refill. You will come to know once you start getting a blank print or a print with one missing colour. Talking about which, at times when you go for a refill the printer ends up using one colour more than the other. Again, one cannot track, which ink is low as the software will not show the ink levels. 
 
How many times can I refill the cartridge before buying a new one? 
Ideally one can refill the print cartridge three times before throwing it away. The ink cartridges are not built for prolonged use and sometimes a kept original ink also goes bad. Wear and tear sets in after couple of months of use and one can see the chip behind the cartridge going bad. As a result, the printer is not able to detect the ink tank and you will not be able to print. 
 
Verdict 
With the prices of original inks coming down drastically users are able to print three to four times the amount of pages they can with a refilled ink. If you look at the costs, refilling a tank four times will still be cheaper than buying one original cartridge. However, one has to look past the costs here. Using an original ink will keep the printer safe and elongates its life. The users will be able to see ink levels and would know when to buy a new one. 
 
But the most important factor here is the print quality. With original inks users can get the best print quality, which is not possible with a refill. Today as opposed to five years ago, going for an original ink makes more sense than going for a refill, as it gives you both safety and quality. If you do not care about the print quality and are one of those who replace the printer every two years, you can go for a refill. But make sure after every two to three refills you buy an original ink cartridge and throw the old one away.

I had been raising my children as a stay-at-home mum for years. While my husband worked, I wanted to bring in my own money.I started thinking about what I could do from home. We couldn't afford childcare if I got a job where I'd be at work during school holidays. I also wanted to be around for their sports days, plays, and other milestones.In summer 2020, I started looking at prints for our home and noticed everything seemed expensive for what they were — just a piece of card stock with printed pictures on them. <h2>The low barrier of entry for a print shop on Etsy appealed to me</h2>After researching what I needed to set up an at-home printing business, I was confident I could start one. I knew that the up-front costs were quite low, with the biggest expenditure being the printer. If it didn't work, I wouldn't have lost much.I told my husband about my business idea in July 2020. We didn't have much in savings, but we set aside a little over £300, or about $360, to get started.I had briefly researched using a company to print on demand to fulfill orders but decided against it. It was too expensive, and I wanted to be able to control everything.I bought an HP Smart Tank Printer for £250. Instead of ink cartridges, it used a bottle of ink that could be refilled — much more economical. I purchased A4 card stock, envelopes, cellophane wrappers, and a postage printer from Amazon. As my business has grown, I've started using independent sellers instead of Amazon to source the materials I need.<h2>I bought images to print from an online platform that were popular on TikTok and Pinterest</h2>Since I'm not especially artistic, I decided to buy images from <a href="https://designbundles.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DesignBundles.net</a> that were popular on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. Each image cost me between £2 and £3, and I planned to sell the prints for between £4 and £5. I set up an Etsy storefront because I had shopped there before and loved that customers consciously supported independent sellers.My first print was sold the day I opened the shop in July 2020. Even though I knew I hadn't made loads of profit, it felt like a lot of money to me.In the beginning, I didn't do any marketing for my products. One of the reasons I chose Etsy was that people were already going there to find unique items. Later on, I did start marketing through Etsy for £1 a day, but it hasn't made much difference.<h2>My first year of Etsy was slow, but I didn't give up </h2>The rest of my first year was slow. I made £5,000 in profit from July 2020 to April 2021.One of the biggest mistakes I made was forgetting to change my postage price for international shipping. For my UK orders, I pay the price of postage. I hate paying for shipping, so it was important for me to offer customers free delivery in the UK. Since the UK has reasonable postage costs, I was paying less than £1 to send most orders and absorbed the cost in the pricing. But when I opened up my Etsy shop to international buyers, I forgot to charge for postage, and the orders ended up costing me money. I sent them anyway because I didn't want to let people down. This little mistake cost me about £150.Early on, I wasn't keeping close track of my expenses. I use QuickBooks but would pay attention only to my revenue. Keeping track of both revenue and expenses has made me keep an eye on my profits — ensuring I make money on everything I buy. I'm excited to use the increased profit to save for a deposit to buy our first house. Each day, I wake a 6 a.m. and head to our garage — my workspace at the moment — to fill any order that came in overnight before I get the kids ready for school.After the school run, I drop the orders at the post office — today there were over 100 packages from over the weekend — before coming home to fill more orders and carry on with administrative work.I often stay up working after the kids go to bed. With more orders, I'm spending a lot more time working, often printing and packaging items until 10 p.m.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/printer">Printer</a> issues are universal headaches - the ink is expensive, the paper gets jammed, and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/wifi">Wifi </a>doesn't work. </li><li>In fact, according to Consumer Reports, 75% of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-printer">home printers</a> are thrown away within a few years of purchase. </li><li>We spoke to printer whiz Tercius Bufete, who's an associate editor at Consumer Reports. He has some ideas that should relieve our printer woes. </li></ul>Following is a transcript of the video.Manny Ocbazghi: We've all been there. You've just finished your essay, class is about to start, and now it's time to print. But wait, the printer says there's no paper. Fine, you go to open the paper tray, but the paper is incredibly real and existent. You touch it and feel it to make sure you're not crazy. Congratulations, you're not.You're not alone. People everywhere have problems with their printers. 75% of printers are thrown away within a few years of purchase. The ink is expensive. The Wi-Fi sucks. Why?Tercius Bufete: It's funny when people talk about how much they hate their printers because it really doesn't do anything sexy or fun.Manny: Tercius Bufete is an associate editor at Consumer Reports. He's reviewed hundreds of printers and believes there's a few things we can do to solve our problems. Let's start with the most annoying one. Why is ink so expensive? It's because of what's called the razor and blades model.Bufete: Some companies will give you a product for cheap, or for free.Manny: The razor or printer in this case.Bufete: And then they expect you to buy things in the future to keep up the cost.Manny: The blades or the ink.Bufete: There's a lot of technology within a cartridge that costs a lot of money.Manny: This causes us to buy third-party printer ink because it's cheaper, but that's probably not a good idea. Often times using third-party ink cartridges voids your printer's warranty, meaning you can't send it in for repairs. Also some brands can recognize when the ink isn't their own and give you an error message. Don't worry, there are cheaper and simpler alternatives. For example, you could buy an EcoTank or reservoir-type printer. Instead of expensive ink cartridges they use small refillable ink bottles. These bottles cost about $12 each and can last up to two years. In the meantime, make sure you're printing at least a couple pages a week. This ensures that your ink cartridges won't dry up. What about Wi-Fi? Why does there always seem to be an issue connecting to your printer?Bufete: Printers aren't sexy or fun. They're these giant black monstrosities that kind of remind us of our old desktops. So what they tend to do is they put them in closets. They tend to hide them under things. And that creates connectivity issues with your router.Manny: For a stronger connection put your printer closer to your router. Another common issue: paper jams. The weight and texture of your printer paper is often what causes these jams. So be sure to check which paper your printer uses in the manual.But let's say you don't even have a printer or you're looking to buy a new one. How do you know which one is right for you? Bufete: So there are two major types of printers. And when you have to choose between them, you really have to think about your needs. Inkjets are kind of really versatile. You can print photos. You can do your documents. They'll often be all-in-one, so you can scan and fax and copy. Lasers are a little bit more geared towards small businesses, so they really are great about texting cheap pages, but they kind of struggle when you wanna print photos Manny: It might be easy to say your printer sucks, but if you're careful and you pay attention to detail, you could solve a lot of those problems.

Bathrooms feature Kiehl's products. Towels are chilled with eucalyptus. Redbrick locker rooms resemble huge dungeons. Celebrities like Anderson Cooper and "Queer Eye"'s Antoni Porowski are frequently spotted working out. There is also a Juice Press shop - one of 33 located within Equinox gyms in New York City.Upscale fitness brands like Equinox and SoulCycle have long partnered with restaurant chains and retailers.Now, gyms and smoothie chains across America are aiming to profit off of the <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> apocalypse. As thousands of stores close across the US, gym chains have been quick to snatch up the resulting abandoned real estate.And, as the era of the mall food court seems likely to come to a close, juice and smoothie chains are betting on the fitness boom. With Sears and Macy's locations across the US closing up shop, many malls have turned to fitness brands in order to fill the unused real estate. Planet Fitness is a top brand filling vacant Sears stores, while Lifetime Fitness has become a top Macy's replacement, according to a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whats-replacing-sears-stores-2018-10">2018 report by the commercial-real-estate company JLL.</a>However, mall owners aren't the only ones worrying about what to do in an era when many customers would rather shop online than visit a department store. Many smoothie chains have long relied on mall business, particularly in food courts. Without mall foot traffic, many chains are rebranding to focus on winning over health-conscious customers instead of thirsty shoppers. Instead of hoping for foot traffic from shoppers at malls, brands like Planet Fitness and Smoothie King are eyeing real estate near fitness centers, hoping to catch gym goers pre- and post-workout. "Our mission as a company is to inspire people to live a healthy and active lifestyle," said Smoothie King's chief marketing officer, Rebecca Miller. Some Smoothie King franchisees are also Planet Fitness or Anytime Fitness franchisees, Miller says, allowing them to open locations near each other. Crunch Fitness members get special <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CrunchRiverview/posts/crunch-and-smoothie-king-are-partnering-to-support-your-active-lifestyle-all-cru/392534044710203/">deals</a> at Smoothie King. When opening new locations, Smoothie King often attempts to position itself near fitness centers, attracting gym goers with "fitness blends" like "Keto Champ" and "The Hulk." Jamba - which rebranded itself from Jamba Juice earlier this year - is emphasizing protein-packed options like Protein Berry Workout with Whey Protein and Acai Super-Antioxidant. Gyms attract potential customers and boost foot traffic, creating what Miller calls a "gym rush," as people flock to Smoothie King locations before and after working out. Fitness brands can also provide more data about members to restaurant chains, like information about gym-goers' spending habits and daily routines. For gyms, partnering with smoothie chains can upgrade working out from a routine to an identity. To build loyalty, fitness brands need to set themselves apart. Often, that isn't purely through workouts, but instead from extras and reputation. "There's not a major difference whether you're at Planet Fitness or an Equinox, or if you're at Flywheel or SoulCycle. The bicycles and the ellipticals and the weights are not that different," said Allen Adamson, the cofounder of marketing firm Metaforce and an adjunct professor at NYU's Stern School fo Business. "What's different is the experience."At locations of some boutique fitness brands, this experience could be polished and perfectly branded. Or do you post a photo of an acai bowl from a trendy, local shop on Instagram following your weekly pilates session? At Planet Fitness, the "judgement free" branding means offering pizza on the first Monday of every month. It aims to project a different image from that of Equinox and its Juice Press-toting members - one that doesn't take things too seriously, emphasizing a lack of judgement over polished perfection. Even when the weights and workout machines are the same, providing pizza instead of $10 juices sends a message: Planet Fitness isn't like other gyms. Perhaps fittingly for the message of inclusion, there isn't one single pizza brand that benefits from Planet Fitness's Pizza Monday tradition.
