I live in Boulder Creek, California, and my business is headquartered in Santa Cruz.For the past 17 years, I've worked on and off as a freelance creative for luxury beauty, skincare, and fashion brands. I've also been an art director and a content marketing manager.I lived in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-san-francisco-worth-it-cost-of-living-negativity-2024-2">San Francisco</a> for about three years. In May 2016, I bought a home for my husband, Paul Lazazzera, and me in Boulder Creek. We married the following year, and Paul started our business in 2021.<h2 id="53da9f8d-49b1-440a-a8d3-e47910a266b0">The housing market in the San Francisco area was brutal</h2><div type="image" title="headshot of a couple in black and white on top of a forest image" height="1108" width="1471" msid="113488818" hostid="261" sizebytes="231088"></div>When I lived in the SF area, I was completely sticker-shocked by my $1,450 a month bedroom (in a two-bedroom apartment), which could barely fit a bed and dresser. I started dating Paul, who lived in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tech-remote-jobs-community-santa-cruz-sacramento-2022-9">Santa Cruz</a>, about an hour and a half away.When my roommate moved out, I couldn't afford the $3,000 rent by myself, so I put the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-host-rental-spare-bedroom-side-hustle-income-2021-6">spare room on Airbnb</a>. One afternoon, my landlord called and told me she knew what I had been doing. I had to cancel all my bookings in front of her or face eviction and swift legal action.I called Paul and asked him if it was now a good time to move in together in Santa Cruz since I would probably get evicted regardless. We agreed to split the rent based on our income.I immediately started looking to buy because rundown rentals were going for more than $3,600 a month, and the competition was fierce.<h2 id="0d10965f-f23a-4539-8f28-fafeb6ff139e">We had to expand our home search and found Boulder Creek</h2>I started actively working with a real-estate agent, going to open houses, and getting mortgage pre-approval in September 2015.The homebuying process in Santa Cruz was extremely stressful. We wanted to live in Santa Cruz proper, but I couldn't afford even the lowest-priced home.Without any investment knowledge and using a traditional <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/banking/savings-accounts-to-save-for-goals">savings account</a>, growing my savings to reach my down payment goal was a complete slog. I regret doing it this way a little, but now I know how to handle my finances better.The most frustrating part was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/credit-score/what-credit-score-is-needed-to-buy-a-house">applying for a mortgage</a>. Despite having saved 20% for the down payment, the banks saw Paul, a newer teacher living paycheck to paycheck, as more "stable" and wouldn't lend without him involved.It was infuriating because he was not contributing financially to the home purchase. Since we were only dating then, I hesitated to take out a mortgage with him.My budget was a tight $500,000. Our search expanded and I made two dead-end offers. I had to go over my budget and closed at $535,000 almost a year later on a 740-square-foot house set on half an acre in Boulder Creek.This property also has a tiny home, which we rent for $1,500 a month to a wonderful long-term tenant, helping to reduce our expenses. It's truly a dream come true, and I am thankful to wake up here every day.<div type="image" title="a tiny brown house in a back yard" height="3840" width="5760" msid="113488822" hostid="261" sizebytes="2436792"></div><h2 id="f4e592b0-2e3a-4dc7-ac13-e3885d0fc674">Boulder Creek is a very small town with challenges</h2><div type="image" title="green covered mountains with clouds" height="2448" width="3264" msid="113488809" hostid="261" sizebytes="154562"></div>Boulder Creek has no traffic lights, just one three-way stop sign in the middle of town. It's about 14 miles to Santa Cruz and 68 miles to San Francisco.This area is not for the faint of heart. We often lose power for no apparent reason, and winters can be especially tough.We were evacuated in August 2020 due to the CZU Lightning Complex fires. In 2023, multiple atmospheric rivers and a bomb cyclone caused significant damage, turning the county into a disaster zone.<h2 id="08128ac7-6752-42e8-bed9-957bbcc06507">I used to love the anonymity of big-city life</h2>I thought I'd surely die in a tuna can-sized walk-up in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-dubai-nyc-british-expat-been-tough-2024-9">New York City</a> with 10 tiny dogs, but now I'm living the exact opposite life, and I wouldn't trade it.I do miss San Francisco at times, especially the abundance of incredible food, the constant buzz of events happening around the clock, and the city's unique energy.But I love our welcoming space and knowing all my neighbors on our road. We live in a special spot, surrounded by some of the coolest and most unique people you'll ever meet — ex-pro skaters, astrobiologists, and fifth-generation loggers, all tucked into the mossy nooks and hobbit holes of the Santa Cruz mountains. Our neighbors truly care for us, and they even support our business.<h2 id="d4469cc2-5976-4831-82de-e2762230c38e">The lower cost of living compared to San Francisco allows us to allocate more resources to our bootstrapped business</h2>Santa Cruz Fungi was born from our shared passion for mushrooms. When Bay Area rent got too expensive, I bought a house in the mountains. Living here is a dream, but I'm uncertain about the future.

Vanilla prices have climbed so high it's worth more by weight than silver. This increase in price has to do with a number of factors, including vanilla bean theft, complex pollination, extreme weather, and the rise of the "all natural" food movement. All of these variables combined to create the perfect recipe for a very expensive spice. Following is the transcript of the video.Narrator: You might think of vanilla as basic. The word is even used to mean boring, average, or basic.Student: Why do we have to go all vanilla on this song? See what we need is my chocolate thunder.Narrator: But vanilla may not always be so run of the mill. Vanilla prices have climbed so high it's worth more by weight than silver, and that high price tag could be bad news for lovers of ice cream, yogurt, chocolate, and even perfumes.One reason vanilla has gotten so expensive is, it's hard to grow. Vanilla vines take two to four years to fully mature, and their flowers only bloom for one day of the year. In order for the plants to produce beans, they have to be pollinated that day. In most places where vanilla is grown, it isn't a native plant, and there aren't bugs or birds capable of pollinating the flowers. Vanilla is native to Mexico, but deforestation there has greatly reduced its natural habitat. In Madagascar, where over 80% of vanilla is produced, the flowers have to be pollinated by hand. The pods need several months to cure after harvesting. The whole process is time-consuming and labor-intensive. But the record high price of vanilla also has to do with changes in the vanilla market.In the 1980s, cheaper artificial vanilla overtook the market. Vanilla farmers cut back production because they weren't making enough money. But around 2011, demand for real vanilla rose again. Big companies were joining the all-natural trend, pledging to eliminate artificial flavorings from their products, but it's taken a while for the vanilla farmers to get back in the game and they don't all want to.Growing vanilla is a stressful and volatile business because there is such high demand, vanilla beans are a target for theft. After working hard to cultivate their crops some farmers have their beans stolen. As the stolen beans move up the supply chain, they get mixed in with legally purchased beans making it difficult for buyers to know which are which. The prevent theft, farmers pick the beans before they're ripe and unripe beans means lower quality vanilla.Farmers also try to prevent theft by branding their vanilla crops with a metal pronged brand. That way buyers can identify what farm the vanilla came from.Farmers also run the risk of having their crops destroyed by extreme weather events. Cyclones are common in Madagascar and climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of those storms. If a cyclone were to wipe out vanilla crops next year, it would take until at least 2022 for new plants to start producing beans, and farmers might not want to take that risk. So the supply could continue to drop even further.The once basic, boring vanilla may wind up becoming a rare sought-after delicacy.

Why vanilla is so expensive

In 2006, the first F-35 rolled out of a high-security plant in Fort Worth, Texas, although <a href="http://nationalinterest.org/feature/americas-f-35-coming-crash-landing-11332">the plane is still far from battle-ready</a>.

"Spitfire II," "Black Mamba," and "Cyclone" were just a few of the rumored names for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-f-35-is-a-disaster-2014-7?op=1">trillion-dollar plane</a>. 
In July of 2006, Lockheed, alongside the US Air Force, announced the new F-35 jets would be named "Lightning II" in homage to the aerial combat legacy of <a href="https://www.f35.com/news/detail/lightning-to-lightning-ii-how-the-f-35-got-its-name" target="_blank">two former fighter jets</a>.
"This aircraft represents the fruits of lessons learned over a hundred years of flight and aerial combat. We're excited about bringing it into our inventory, and warfighters around the globe are excited about flying it in <keyword id="6354810" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defense">defense</keyword> of freedom," then-US Air Force Chief of Staff General Michael Moseley <a href="https://www.f35.com/news/detail/lightning-to-lightning-ii-how-the-f-35-got-its-name" target="_blank">said at the naming ceremony</a>.
The World War II-era Lockheed P-38 Lightning and the UK's Electric Lightning are the two specific systems credited for the name.

Approximately 10,000 were built during World War II, flying more than 130,000 missions around the globe.

It was the world's first aircraft to "supercruise," or break the sound barrier without employing its <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afterburner" target="_blank">afterburners</a>. The jet's top-speed was estimated at 1,500 miles per hour.
Currently, there are <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUZ6SMmTKns" target="_blank">three variants </a>of the F-35 fighter jet. The first version of the aircraft is expected to be combat-ready by mid-2015, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/r-f-35-jet-combat-ready-next-year-despite-engine-fix-lockheed-2014-9" target="_blank">Reuters reports</a>. But the program has been <a href="http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2014/04/03/f-35-fighters-plagued-with-delays-cost-overruns-federal-report-says/">beset with delays and cost overruns</a>, and the plane's debut has been pushed back several times before.

How The World's Most Expensive Piece Of Military Hardware Got Its Name

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Kenya's basic income trial has grown to 20,000 participants in 200 rural villages.</li><li>The program, which began in 2018, provides no-strings-attached cash payments for up to 12 years.</li></ul>Kenya is running one of the world's largest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/which-states-cities-have-guaranteed-basic-income-programs-low-income-2024-4">basic income</a> trials.The country's program has grown to include 20,000 participants in 200 rural villages, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givedirectly.org/from-california-to-kenya-tubbs/">US leaders are taking note</a>. The no-strings-attached cash payment model has been tried <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/immigrants-new-mexico-basic-income-for-housing-healthcare-ubi-gbi2024-5">over 100 times</a> across America, with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/san-antonio-ubi-guaranteed-basic-income-pay-housing-expenses-work-2024-3">participants reporting </a>that basic income allowed them to secure housing, afford food, pay off debt, and support their children.GiveDirectly — a nonprofit that has helped administer basic income programs around the world — is leading Kenya's pilot, which began in 2018.Unlike most government assistance, basic income allows individuals and families the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dc-basic-income-helps-couple-afford-healthcare-housing-ubi-gbi-2024-5">freedom to spend money</a> where they need it most, instead of programs like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/snap-alice-food-stamps-hunger-government-assitance-free-meals-2024-5">SNAP</a> and Medicaid which have specific spending categories.Dustin Palmer, US country director for GiveDirectly, said that trusting families with cash is the best method to "help people get on their feet.""This is a way of thinking about how we support families, children, all sorts of folks in a way that meets them where they are," Palmer <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/basic-income-gbi-ubi-low-income-americans-afford-housing-food-2024-5">previously told Business Insider</a>.Kenya's program is considered to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-people-spend-universal-basic-income-ubi-food-housing-transportation-2024-4">universal</a> basic income because families don't have to meet specific income criteria to participate. In guaranteed basic income programs run in the US, participants must have a household income at or below a certain percentage of the federal poverty line. However, about half of Kenya's participants are living below the country's extreme poverty line, per GiveDirectly, which means surviving on less than $33 a month or $400 a year without government assistance.Participants were sorted into <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givedirectly.org/2023-ubi-results/#table">three randomized groups</a>: the first group received $22.50 a month (2,925 KES) for 12 years; the second group received $22.50 a month for two years; and the third group received one $500 lump-sum payment (65,000 KES) at the start of the program. Researchers are also studying a control group of similar villages that did not receive cash.GiveDirectly plans to <a target="_blank" href="https://conference.nber.org/conf_papers/f192616.pdf">survey participants through 2030</a>, when the long-term UBI participants are set to receive their final payment. GiveDirectly researchers are looking to understand the impacts of long vs. short-term UBI support, as families aim to afford basic needs and build sustainable wealth.Community leaders in the US are noticing the lessons of Kenya's pilot. Michael Tubbs, chair and founder of Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, visited Kenya in December 2023. Tubbs' 2019 GBI pilot in Stockton, California, began the wave of cash aid programs in America, and he said Kenya's pilot is a successful model for helping families escape extreme poverty."Whether at home or abroad, we need to recognize that dignity is a human right—and a right that poverty directly violates," Tubbs <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givedirectly.org/from-california-to-kenya-tubbs/">wrote in an essay</a> about the UBI pilot. "But by trusting people to do right by their families and communities — because we know they will — we can ensure that right is secured."<h2 id="34dc8100-6e4c-43e9-96a5-f9759ba008f9">UBI pilot helped families in Kenya meet basic needs and begin building wealth</h2>GiveDirectly's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givedirectly.org/2023-ubi-results/">initial report</a> on the Kenya UBI pilot captures participant experiences in their first two years of receiving payments, from 2018 to 2020.All participants said basic income improved their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/san-antonio-ubi-guaranteed-basic-income-housing-finances-austin-rent-2024-3">housing and food security</a>, mental health, and household savings. Participants also reported net growth for village businesses and lessened inequality in their community.UBI made participants over 6% happier and more satisfied with their lives, per the GiveDirectly report, and lessened household stress by 10% — despite most participants maintaining the same work schedule as they had before the pilot began. Families were also able to buy more nutritious food, invest in more assets, and spend money at local businesses, which likely contributed to an overall 23% increase in average consumption among all participants.Still, some results vary between specific UBI groups. Families in the lump-sum payment group said they were able to make strong investments, while the families enrolled in the full 12 years of UBI felt more comfortable building savings and taking financial risks.Families receiving long-term support experienced <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guaranteed-basic-income-child-tax-credit-reduce-child-abuse-rates-2024-4">lower rates of domestic violence</a> and better educational outcomes for their primary school-age children.For participants enrolled in the two-year group, UBI allowed them to cover basic expenses in the short term, but they weren't able to build savings or lasting wealth.<h2 id="19a7b492-59bd-438f-b2be-23cfe4d6b249">Kenya's long-term approach to basic income could help more families in America</h2>Although most basic income pilots around the world provide participants with support over a set time period, Kenya's is one of the first to study the impacts of long-term cash aid.Short-term basic income — which is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chicago-basic-income-helped-mother-rent-an-apartment-ubi-gbi2024-5">most common model used in the US</a> — was the least successful among Kenyan participants, as it didn't allow families to build lasting financial security."Policymakers wanting to reduce poverty by creating wealth and independence should rethink using this popular design, as both a long-term UBI and a large lump sum were found to be significantly more transformative," per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givedirectly.org/2023-ubi-results/">the results report</a> from GiveDirectly.With lump sum and long-term basic income, participants were able to both meet their immediate needs and begin building assets and savings for the future. These forms of UBI dramatically improved families' economic outlook, and the researchers said it is the best way to help participants facing extreme poverty.To be sure, the researchers said more data is needed to fully understand how lump sum or long-term UBI could work in high-income countries. It would be more costly to run longer basic income programs in the US, and it's unclear if the benefits to families would outweigh the costs.Kenyan participants will complete their next UBI survey in 2025, and the program is set to continue for another six years.GiveDirectly is trying other basic income programs in Africa. In Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya, the nonprofit gave about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.givedirectly.org/urban-refugees/">$1,000 to refugees</a>. And families in Malawi who survived <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2023/03/14/1163380089/cyclone-freddy-malawi-mozambique-flooding-mudslides">2023's Cyclone Freddy</a> received a total of $750 over three months beginning in December.Have you benefited from a guaranteed basic income program? Kenya is experimenting with universal basic income. Here's what the US could learn about no-strings payments.

His post included a picture of a whirlpool where a river empties into Monterey Bay. Mulvaney is an environmental studies professor at San José State University and told Insider that he's never seen the river so high in the 22 years he's lived there. The photo Mulvaney shared was just one of countless images documenting the damage California has endured over a couple weeks. First came a bomb cyclone with its whipping winds and high swells that destroyed piers jutting into Monterey Bay. Then a series of atmospheric rivers inundated the region with heavy rainfall that poured down the Santa Cruz Mountains and overflowed rivers.The pattern has the fingerprints of the climate crisis all over it. Rick Spinrad, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said Tuesday that the crisis is creating more intense, extreme events that often set off "cascading hazards" like intense drought, followed by devastating wildfires, followed by dangerous flooding and mudslides. In the last two years, Santa Cruz experienced prolonged drought and a major wildfire in 2020 that burned <a href="https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2020/8/16/czu-lightning-complex-including-warnella-fire/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">tens of thousands of acres</a>. Now it's among the hardest hit areas in California, where storms brought more water in a week than the state has received in months. At least 17 people have died, including one in Santa Cruz, Gov. Gavin Newsom said while surveying the damage in the county. <a href="https://poweroutage.us/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Nearly 90,000 residents don't have power.</a> It could be months before the full extent of the damage is tallied up. But these disasters are becoming more expensive. NOAA climate scientists <a href="https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/national-climate-202212" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">reported there were 18 weather and climate disasters in the US last year</a> totalling $165 billion in damages — the third most costly on record behind 2017 and 2005. So how exactly does the climate crisis affect the events in California? The world's oceans are getting hotter because they trap more than 90% of the heat from all those greenhouse gas emissions humans create. As a result, the air also gets warmer and holds more moisture. That feeds more water into the atmospheric river flowing in the sky over the West Coast, said John Abraham, a thermal scientist at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.Abraham <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00376-023-2385-2" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">coauthored a study by two dozen scientists</a> that found ocean temperatures in 2022 were the hottest on record. "The amount of heat going into the ocean is the equivalent to the energy of five Hiroshima bombs being detonated every second of every day for the entire year," Abraham told Insider. "It's a shit ton of heat."Mulvaney is aware of these dynamics, yet he doesn't want to flee California, in part because the state's government is investing in climate resiliency. He cited enhanced levee systems to help control flooding and projects that reduce wildfire risks."That's the one silver lining," he said.

Oceans are absorbing heat equal to 5 Hiroshima bombs every second and that's helping power massive storms

Riyadh, <keyword id="50996" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saudi-Arabia">Saudi Arabia</keyword> on Monday announced the extension of the suspension of <keyword id="9612485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-commercial-flights">international commercial flights</keyword> for an <keyword id="9560297" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="additional-week">additional week</keyword>, according to <keyword id="3822408" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-interior-ministry">the Interior Ministry</keyword>. Besides flights, the Ministry also announced the suspension of land and sea entry to the Kingdom for the same period. On December, Saudi Arabia had first decided suspend international flights, except in exceptional cases, temporarily for a week, which could be extended for another week. Saudi Arabia extends suspension of international flights for additional week

Speaking at a function organised to felicitate meritorious students at the Harmal Panchkroshi educational institute in North Goa district, Sawant said that there was anxiety among students about when and how the exams would be conducted. "A lot of students are wondering when higher secondary schools or colleges will resume classes. We are stressing on offline exams this year. Class XI, XII as well as <keyword id="2802459" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="college-exams">college exams</keyword> will be held offline," Sawant said. Currently, schools in Goa are only allowed to hold offline classes for Class X and Class XII students, while other students are taught online by educational institutions. According to the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, exams for Class X are scheduled to begin from May 13, while Class XII exams are scheduled to start from April 26. As per the report, the smartphone maker has set a goal of eclipsing 307 million units in 2021 by expanding its mid-range and low-end 5G smartphone lineup and promoting the ever-widening segment of foldable models. Samsung expected to ship less than 300 million smartphones for the first time in nine years

Cairo, The Egyptian government has announced a series of new restrictions to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. San Francisco, Cyber-security firm CrowdStrike has revealed that suspected Russian <keyword id="11094" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hackers">hackers</keyword> who broke into a series of <keyword id="702959" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-government-agencies">US government agencies</keyword> and enterprises via compromising <keyword id="609247" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SolarWinds">SolarWinds</keyword> software, aimed to attack its network but failed to do so. The suspected Russian hackers installed a malware in the Orion software sold by the IT management company SolarWinds, and accessed sensitive data belonging to several US government agencies, at least one hospital and a university, the Wall Street Journal reported last week. In a blog post, CrowdStrike said it was alerted by Microsoft that the hackers had tried to read its emails using a Microsoft reseller's account "<keyword id="9380675" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="several-months">several months</keyword> ago." "Specifically, they identified a reseller's Microsoft Azure account used for managing CrowdStrike's Microsoft Office licenses was observed making abnormal calls to Microsoft cloud APIs during a 17-hour period several months ago," the company said. "There was an attempt to read email, which failed as confirmed by Microsoft. As part of our secure IT architecture, CrowdStrike does not use Office 365 email". CrowdStrike conducted a thorough review and found that it "suffered no impact".
