There was even one time when a guest pulled a piece of fur off my costume and a part of my neck was exposed.</p><p>After that interaction, the guest was told they wouldn't be meeting any more characters for the day.</p><p>Disney does a lot to uphold character integrity and keep its performers safe, so think twice before trying to mess with a performer at the parks.</p><h2>Don't ask characters for a photo or autograph when they're clearly walking somewhere else</h2><p>It's very rare <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-you-should-never-do-at-disney-world-according-to-employee-2022">at Disney World</a> to see a character "roaming" or not placed in one specific spot to meet guests. So if you see a performer walking around, they're probably trying to get somewhere.</p><p>Stepping in front of them or grabbing onto them can become a safety issue for you and the performer — who is either trying to get to their meet-and-greet location or head backstage for a break from the heat.</p><p>It's important to listen to the attendants and other park employees when they tell you when and where you can interact with a character. </p><h2>Purposefully asking questions that the character can't answer isn't fun for anyone</h2><div type="image" title="winnie the pooh standing at meet and greet spot in disney world" height="1155" width="1536" msid="92786674" hostid="261" sizebytes="43436"></div><p>Fur-character performers aren't allowed to speak when in the big costumes, so asking them an uncomfortable question — such as "Is it hot in there?" — can really make the interaction awkward and weird.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/helpful-things-you-should-know-about-disney-parks-per-cast-members">Disney performers</a> are trained to keep the interaction moving, so they'll dodge questions they aren't able to answer through movement or with the help of their character attendant and photographer. </p><p>If you don't know what to say to a character, try asking them what they've been doing recently or what their favorite ride is.</p><h2>Don't force your child to meet characters if they're uncomfortable </h2><p>Just like any other attraction, <a href="https://www.insider.com/disney-parks-fur-character-questions-answered-2022-4">performers and park employees</a> know you've waited a long time for a meet and greet.</p><p>If your child is clearly upset, scared, or uncomfortable meeting the character when they get closer to them, please don't force your child to give them a high-five or a hug. The photo you're seeking isn't worth traumatizing your child.</p><p>Plus, it makes the performer just as uncomfortable when they can see that they're scaring a kid. I always tried my best to just not make things worse.</p>

Former White House chef Andre Rush shares common cooking mistakes and tips for feeding crowds

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Last year, I spent 2 months turning a 2012 Ford Transit Connect into a micro-cabin on wheels.</li><li>Since <a href="https://www.insider.com/interesting-things-about-living-on-the-road-with-family">taking it on the road</a>, I've realized there are plenty of things I wish I'd done differently.</li><li>Tackling a fast reno schedule in the middle of winter while working full-time wasn't a good combo.</li></ul><p>When 2020 hit with all of its uncertainties, I knew there was no better time to start <keyword id="6894034" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="van-life">van life</keyword>.</p><p>I was working remotely, so I retreated to my childhood <keyword id="6363870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="home">home</keyword> in Ohio and spent two months and $12,500 turning a 2012 Ford Transit Connect into what I fondly call my micro-cabin on wheels.</p><p>There are lots of things I'm proud of, but since hitting the road, I've learned a lot about what I should and shouldn't do for my next build.</p><p>Read on for my biggest regrets from the <a href="https://www.insider.com/advice-for-buying-and-fixing-up-a-used-van">renovation process</a>.</p><h2>Working full-time while converting the <keyword id="6388544" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="van">van</keyword> wasn't ideal</h2><p>Most mornings, I worked on the van from 7 or 8 a.m. until I started work at 12 p.m. Then I got back to it at 8 or 9 p.m. and worked into the early hours of the next day.</p><p>This allowed me to keep <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-living-in-a-camper-van-what-it-is-like">my full-time, remote job</a> at an LA-based start-up while making progress on my build.</p><p>I was able to hit the road quickly, but the schedule was aggressive and the burnout was real.</p><p>There were moments I was bent over a jigsaw in tears from exhaustion and frustration and others when I <a href="https://www.insider.com/i-failed-at-van-life-what-went-wrong">made stupid mistakes</a> because I was in a hurry to finish before work.</p><h2>I wish I'd invested in a bigger rig from the start</h2><div type="image" title="exterior shot of abbey's van in front of some rock structures" height="2275" width="3033" msid="85151894" hostid="261"></div><p>There are a couple of vehicle models that are almost ubiquitous with the van-life <keyword id="15482" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="lifestyle">lifestyle</keyword>: the Mercedes Sprinter, the RAM Promaster, and the Ford Transit.</p><p>They're long, tall, and allow for building out extra elements like showers and kitchens. They also cost about three to four times my total budget before <keyword id="923923" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Renovations">renovations</keyword>.</p><p>I wanted to hit the road as soon as possible while keeping costs low, so I went with a smaller van.</p><p>But when I start <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-to-know-before-traveling-in-a-camper-van-tips">planning for my next build</a>, I'll go with something that allows me to comfortably host my partner, friend, and pups and has extra room for bikes and climbing gear. </p><h2>Trying to build in the middle of a Midwest winter was a big mistake</h2><p>On the weekends, I frequently worked for eight hours straight in the snow and cold, and Ohio winters don't mess around.</p><p>A trusty pair of insulated Carhartt coveralls became my best friend, but I'll never recommend a winter build.</p><p>Glue doesn't stick when it's 9 degrees Fahrenheit, wet paint doesn't always dry in the right finish or color when it's too cold, and trying to do any work that requires fine motor skills in gloves is a major morale buster.</p><h2>Building out-of-state without paying attention to details made things harder</h2><p>When I went home to Ohio, I planned on finding a van, converting it, and driving back to California within two or three months.</p><p>But I quickly learned that securing out-of-state registration and getting my van from point A to point B without incurring massive fines wasn't easy.</p><p>I knew buying the van in rural Ohio would save me money, but it didn't occur to me that the logistics of building and taking my first trip would be inhibited by registration details.</p><p>The timeline of the long, leisurely trip I'd imagined was suddenly based around when my temporary tags expired.</p><h2>I wish I'd installed a few more creature comforts</h2><div type="image" title="interior shot of abbey's van with sink and couch" height="2274" width="3024" msid="85151897" hostid="261"></div><p>I knew my small van was going to fall short of the glitzy "apartments on wheels" <a href="https://www.insider.com/rv-renovation-what-its-really-like-gross-expensive-photos-2021-5">all over social media</a>.</p><p>In many ways, that's what I wanted. As an avid backpacker and camper, I didn't want to lose the "out there" feeling I love about nature.</p><p>But building a van <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-i-have-for-living-on-the-road-2021-5">without creature comforts</a> means I have to adapt how I <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> and prioritize proximity to necessities like showers and toilets. Unless I want to haul a collapsible toilet in my van, I have to camp at defined sites rather than in the backcountry.</p><p>Although I invested in a portable shower, I find myself envying people in <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-i-wish-i-knew-before-buying-a-secondhand-rv-travel">bigger rigs or RVs</a> who don't have to trek to and from the bathroom in the dark or inclement weather. </p><h2>Insisting on doing the build myself wasn't all that gratifying in the end</h2><p>Whenever you see a beautifully built, woman-owned van on social media, check the comments. The most frequent one you'll probably see is, "Did you build that yourself?"</p><p>I was motivated to be able to answer "yes" without hesitation, proving all the subtle misogynistic questioners wrong.</p><p>In reality, I relied heavily on the expertise of my dad and uncle. They helped me brush up on the skills I'd learned in high-school shop class and take them to the next level. They also put in extra effort while I was working.</p><p>I have lots of great memories of working on the van with them, but there are things we probably would've saved time and effort on by outsourcing labor.</p><p>Even if it ended up costing a little more, it would've been worth it for our sanity and peace of mind. </p><h2>I run my van on renewable energy, so it would've been nice to have fixed solar panels</h2><p>I decided that I wanted my van to run primarily on solar energy early on, but costs and timing meant that buying solar panels wasn't an option.</p><p>The first two months on the road, I charged my battery - which powered my lights, fan, and electronics chargers - through shore power (outlets at campsites that plug right into my van). A few months ago, I invested in a 100-watt solar panel and have since been running everything on the renewable energy source.</p><p>But the panels aren't fixed to my roof, so I have to lug them in and out of the van every time I use them. They're bulky, heavy, and fragile, and having them fixed to the top of my van would make a huge difference. </p><h2>Next time, I'm investing in a van with 4-wheel drive</h2><div type="image" title="abbey's van sitting in a tree-filled forest over gravel road" height="2994" width="3992" msid="85151901" hostid="261"></div><p>I haven't run into a terrain problem yet, but it's something I'm always thinking about while scouting campsites on dirt roads.</p><p>I sometimes have to hop out and walk a route to be sure that I'll be able to make it over sandy or muddy areas while people in Sprinters or Transits cruise right past.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/i-failed-at-van-life-what-went-wrong">Buying a van</a> without four-wheel drive kept my costs low, but the investment would've been worth it. </p><h2>I didn't give myself a very realistic schedule for the build </h2><p>I purchased my van on December 22, 2020, and hit the road on February 21, 2021.</p><p>In those two months, my dad and I gutted the van; installed flooring, insulation, wood paneling, and electricity; and built cabinets, an overhead storage unit, and a convertible bed.</p><p>Did I mention this was all while working nine-hour days?</p><p>Spreading out the build would've given me more rest days - I took exactly two days off - and peace of mind. I also could've planned further in advance and taken more time to consider whether or not I was happy with how things were coming along. </p><h2>My tight budget wasn't that effective in the end</h2><p>Although budgeting was helpful for getting a rough idea of how I wanted to break up my investment, it was brutal when I faced the reality of working on such a large-scale project.</p><p>When I started, 2-by-4 pieces of lumber were almost $7 per board - the <a href="https://fortune.com/2021/03/31/lumber-prices-2021-chart-wood-production-high-why-is-lumber-so-expensive-right-now-home-prices-data-update/">highest cost in 13 years</a>. Additionally, you don't always know what you need until you start moving. That extra $40 here on flooring material and $20 there on more paneling adds up.</p><p>After buying my van for $9,000, I knew I only wanted to put in $3,000 more, max, and I came pretty close.</p><p>But since then, <a href="https://www.insider.com/rv-information-you-should-know-before-buying-secondhand">I've invested another $1,000</a> into things like solar panels, showers, and safety supplies that were never in my original budget.</p><p>Now I see a van build as an ongoing expense, like rent, that I'm always saving for and investing in rather than a one-time purchase.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I quit my 9-to-5 job in New York City to work as an entertainment host for a major cruise line.</li><li>The first few weeks were overwhelming, but I quickly adjusted to the <keyword id="15482" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="lifestyle">lifestyle</keyword>. </li><li>The living quarters are incredibly small and have mandatory weekly inspections.  </li></ul><p>Growing up, I was often told I was going to "make it" in New York City, and I always believed it was what I wanted. </p><p>So when I graduated from Temple University in 2014 with a journalism degree, I <a href="https://www.insider.com/rich-fled-nyc-coronavirus-i-want-to-leave-too-2020-4">made my way to NYC</a> and got a job at a highly regarded publication in the biz.</p><p>But my two-hour commute and cubicle filled with boxes wasn't glamorous at all. I started getting bald spots in my hair <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-know-if-youre-stressed-2018-4">from the stress</a> and often daydreamed about <a href="https://www.insider.com/surprising-things-about-living-in-a-camper-van-what-it-is-like">traveling the world full-time</a>, scrolling endlessly on Instagram to discover how I could get paid to be a nomad.</p><p>When I found out that onboard cruise-ship employees get a paycheck to <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> and meet new people every day, I auditioned to be an entertainment host for <a href="https://www.insider.com/adults-disney-cruise-line-2018-9">a major cruise line</a>, got the job, and left NYC for good on my first contract: seven months out of Baltimore, Maryland, a mere two hours from my hometown.</p><p>I joined despite feeling discouraged, and now, six years and 65 countries later, here are the seven <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-i-wish-i-knew-before-buying-a-secondhand-rv-travel">things that have surprised me the most about the job</a>:    </p><h2><strong>There are barely any Americans working onboard</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="ship crew" height="760" width="1013" msid="82660883" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>I was coined "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@ericafromamerica?lang=en">Erica from America</a>" the very first day I boarded the ship.</p><p>As the sole American on a bus full of employees (some who'd worked on ships for over 20 years) about to join their contracts, <a href="https://www.insider.com/things-normal-in-the-us-but-considered-weird-2018-8">I stood out like a hotdog</a> at a hamburger party.</p><p>There were only nine other Americans working onboard my first ship, and every contract after that, the same pattern followed. The crew comes from over 150 countries, but there's a very small percentage of Americans working onboard.</p><p>Even today, everyone in my life calls me Erica from America.</p><h2><strong>The first week can be incredibly overwhelming and stressful </strong></h2><p>The whole onboarding process is always intimidating, from presenting all of your medical paperwork to officers to being thrown headfirst into learning what each fire extinguisher does. I was learning how to operate a deadly, watertight door on my first ship day.</p><p>Safety is the most important thing <a href="https://www.insider.com/foods-you-shouldnt-eat-on-a-cruise-2018-7">on cruise ships</a>. So whether they're returning from vacation or are a brand-new hire, every crew member has hours of safety training during their first weeks in addition to their job prep.</p><p>I cried in the bathroom every day for a week straight. It is a lot to handle after hours of <keyword id="100790" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="traveling">traveling</keyword> across the world to join a ship, but life onboard gets so much easier after the first few weeks.</p><h2><strong>The crew cabins are seriously cramped</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="cruise ship living space" height="543" width="724" msid="82660884" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Cut a big walk-in closet in half and <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-be-a-good-roommate-2018-2">put two random humans</a> from different countries in there with a wardrobe that has just enough space on each side for exactly five hangers and you have yourself a crew cabin.</p><p>Despite the fun of having a mini-fridge to store foods we're not supposed to keep and a flat-screen TV that can swing to face the top bunk, the shower curtain clings to your butt, and the bathroom is so tiny that you can bathe, brush your teeth over the sink, and use the toilet all in one swoop.</p><p>And don't forget mandatory cabin inspections once a week where staff checks how orderly our space is. </p><h2>The dating culture is dramatic but can also be amazing</h2><p>I expected to experience college-like drama on the ship, but the reality was even wilder.</p><p>Picture adults who are away for seven to nine months at a time, working extremely hard and under stress but having an incredibly glamorous life trotting around the world.</p><p>Some are married. Some are single. Some are married but "single" on ships. Some are undercover. <a href="https://www.insider.com/experience-going-to-a-matchmaker-2017-12">Some are truly amazing partners</a> - but most of the time, you find out the hard way that they're not.</p><p>There are so many heartbreaks but also plenty of amazing love stories on the seas. </p><h2><strong>It wasn't hard for me to adjust to the lifestyle</strong></h2><p><strong><div type="image" title="Erica in Rome" height="810" width="1080" msid="82660886" hostid="261"></div></strong></p><p>Working <a href="https://www.insider.com/unique-cruises-to-go-on-2018-10">onboard a ship</a> isn't for everyone, and I have seen many people quit within their first month.</p><p>We typically work eight to 12 hours per day, with no days off for seven months straight. However, it's easy to see that the crew who work onboard absolutely love the lifestyle and what they do. You won't make it otherwise.</p><p>As crew members, we wake up in a different country virtually every day and appreciate our free moments 10 times more. Being in such an amazing group is the most special thing I've ever felt a part of - we have the biggest sense of community and morale.</p><p>Plus we have a three-month vacation between contracts to eat junk food, sleep all day, and catch up on every bit of pop culture.</p><h2><strong>Crew life is a blast, even after work</strong></h2><div type="image" title="ship crew having fun" height="2802" width="3736" msid="82660888" hostid="261"></div><p>Cruise-ship crews are known for partying after work, and let me tell you, we (sometimes) live up to that standard.</p><p>There are very strict alcohol policies for the staff, but the crew-bar drinks are cheap and <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelorette-party-destinations-more-to-do-than-drink-2018-8">the parties are so much fun</a>, so learning a level of self-control is crucial.</p><p>There is an entire HR team on board dedicated to the staff who plan multiple events a week, offer support of all kinds, and organize crew tours onshore.</p><div type="image" title="dog sledding in Alaska" height="3024" width="4032" msid="82660889" hostid="261"></div><p>Some staff positions, like mine in entertainment, get more time off in the ports than others because we don't work with guests as much while docked. </p><p>So I was lucky to have a lot of chances onshore to <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-leave-job-and-travel-according-to-someone-who-did-it">explore depths of the world</a> I never thought possible, like dog sledding in Alaska, running around Petra in Jordan, and cave diving for glowworms in New Zealand, to name a few.</p><h2><strong>I was totally </strong><strong>alone</strong><strong> on this journey</strong></h2><div type="image" title="erica in the desert" height="703" width="936" msid="82660890" hostid="261"></div><p>Although I made amazing friends who feel like family onboard, I realized after a while that I was truly on my own throughout this ship journey.</p><p>Constantly being surrounded by hundreds of crew members and passengers and becoming close with everyone you encounter is special, but no one will ever experience it exactly the same way as me.</p><p>Crew members share a sense of closeness because of our common familiarity with being global citizens, but every time I came home from a contract, it was harder to relate to friends and family on land.</p><p>I'm so lucky to have a supportive family who came to visit a ton. It's hard to describe to someone who's never <a href="https://www.insider.com/family-of-5-lives-on-a-boat-full-time-photos">experienced ship life</a>, but it can get lonely while also being the most enthralling and fulfilling thing you could ever choose to do. </p>
