"Immediately on receipt of the information, joint inspection of the NOIDA facility of the manufacturer, Marion Biotech, was carried out by UP Drug Control and CDSCO team and further action as appropriate would be initiated based on the inspection report," said the Union health ministry on Thursday. The samples of the cough syrup have been taken from the manufacturing premises and sent to Regional Drugs Testing Laboratory (RDTL), Chandigarh for testing. Meanwhile, Marion Biotech Pharma company has said that it has sent samples of the said cough syrup for testing and has also halted the production of the product. Hasan, the Legal Head of Marion Biotech, expressed grief over the deaths on behalf of the company and said that an inquiry into the matter was being conducted by the government. He added that samples were collected and action would be taken on the basis of the report. "While all required steps will be taken, as a robust regulatory authority, the WHO has been requested to share with CDSCO at the earliest the report on the establishment of a causal relation to the deaths with the medical products in question, photographs of labels/products etc," the sources said. According to the sources, the WHO had on September 29 informed the Drugs Controller General of India that it was providing technical assistance and advice to The Gambia. It had highlighted that a significant contributing factor to the deaths was suspected to be the use of medicines which may have been contaminated with Diethylene Glycol/Ethylene Glycol, and said its presence had been confirmed in some of the samples it tested. The CDSCO said it responded to the WHO within an hour-and-a-half after receiving intimation, by taking up the matter with the state regulatory authority. A detailed investigation was launched to ascertain the facts and details into the matter in collaboration with Haryana State Drugs Controller, the source explained. From the preliminary inquiry, it has been made out that Maiden Pharmaceutical Limited is the manufacturer licensed by the state drug controller for the products under reference, and holds manufacturing permission for these products. "The company has manufactured and exported these products only to The Gambia so far," the source said. As per the tentative results received by WHO out of the 23 samples tested, four samples have been found to contain Diethylene Glycol/ Ethylene Glycol as indicated. On Sunday, the EPA updated its list of chemicals contained in the fiery train derailment, which occurred in East Palestine, Ohio, 50 miles outside Pittsburg on February 3. The chemicals include gases linked to cancer in manufacturing workers in <a href="https://www.cancer.org/healthy/cancer-causes/chemicals/benzene.html#:~:text=IARC%20classifies%20benzene%20as%20%E2%80%9Ccarcinogenic,%2C%20and%20non%2DHodgkin%20lymphoma.">several</a> <a href="https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ToxProfiles/tp20-c1-b.pdf">studies</a>, and exposure to these chemicals may also cause short-term problems like dizziness, nausea, and irritation of the eyes and mouth. But the EPA does not know yet whether the amount of chemicals released in the derailment was enough to pose health risks, according to <a href="https://ceg.osu.edu/people/dannemiller.70" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Karen Dannemiller</a>, an associate professor of environmental health science at Ohio State University. The EPA said on its website it has <a href="https://response.epa.gov/site/site_profile.aspx?site_id=15933">not yet detected dangerous levels</a> of these chemicals in nearby homes, though some residents have reported <a href="https://www.insider.com/animals-sick-dying-after-ohio-train-derailment-caused-chemical-leak-2023-2">animals in the area</a> dying and experiencing potential signs of chemical exposure. Dannemiller said the agency is still in the "early part" of long-term risk assessment for this derailment, which includes measuring how many chemicals entered nearby soil and water. The EPA did not respond to Insider's inquiry into how long the assessment might take.Here are all the health risks associated with the chemicals contained in the Ohio train derailment:<h2>Vinyl chloride </h2>Of the cars that turned over, five contained vinyl chloride, a manmade chemical used to make plastic products. Manufacturers convert vinyl chloride to polyvinyl chloride, also called PVC or just vinyl, a hard plastic resin used to make things like pipes, packaging materials, and wire coatings, per the <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/substances/vinyl-chloride">National Institutes of Health</a>. The EPA classifies vinyl chloride as a <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2015-06/documents/oh_hh_b_432_11062000.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">known human carcinogen</a>. Inhaling the chemical has been shown to <a href="https://19january2017snapshot.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2016-09/documents/vinyl-chloride.pdf">increase the risk</a> of angiosarcoma, a rare form of liver cancer, in humans and in animal studies, per the EPA.Vinyl chloride is a highly flammable colorless gas with a mild, sweet odor, which means people who breathe in the gas won't be aware of its toxicity.Short-term exposure to vinyl chloride can cause dizziness, drowsiness, loss of coordination, nausea, and a burning sensation in the arms and legs, per the <a href="https://wwwn.cdc.gov/TSP/MMG/MMGDetails.aspx?mmgid=278&amp;toxid=51">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>. Long-term exposure to higher concentrations of the gas can be deadly, as the fume can impair the central nervous system and cause depressed breathing, the CDC said.When vinyl chloride burns or breaks down in the air, it <a href="https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ToxProfiles/tp20-c1-b.pdf">creates</a> <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2016-09/documents/hydrochloric-acid.pdf">hydrochloric acid</a>, which can cause coughing, respiratory tract inflammation, chest pain, and fluid buildup in the lungs when inhaled.<h2>Benzene</h2>Two cars that derailed contained <a href="https://emergency.cdc.gov/agent/benzene/basics/facts.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">benzene</a>, an industrial chemical found naturally in crude oil, gasoline, and cigarette smoke. Manufacturers frequently use it to make plastic, synthetic fibers, rubbers, detergents, and dyes, <a href="https://emergency.cdc.gov/agent/benzene/basics/facts.asp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the CDC</a>.Like vinyl chloride, the EPA classifies benzene as a known human carcinogen. Benzene has been in the news recently after several big cosmetic companies <a href="https://www.insider.com/fda-list-dry-shampoo-by-dove-suave-in-unilever-recall-2022-10">recalled dry shampoos</a> contaminated with the chemical. <a href="https://www.insider.com/fda-list-dry-shampoo-by-dove-suave-in-unilever-recall-2022-10">Several</a> <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3447593/">studies</a> have linked prolonged benzene exposure to higher rates of <a href="https://www.insider.com/non-hodgkin-lymphoma-symptoms-2018-11">non-Hodgkin lymphoma</a>, a cancer that starts in the white blood cells, and <a href="https://www.cancer.gov/types/leukemia#:~:text=Leukemia%20is%20a%20broad%20term,in%20children%20younger%20than%2015." target="_blank" rel="noopener">leukemia</a>, cancer in the blood cells. Cancer through benzene exposure primarily occurs in workers exposed to large amounts of the fume over time, often related to oil refining, chemical producing, or shoe-making.Breathing in high doses of benzene can also cause some short-term side effects like dizziness and confusion, <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/leukemia/benzene-leukemia" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Healthline reports</a>.<h2>Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (EGBE)</h2>EGBE, also known as 2-butoxyethanol, is a colorless liquid found in paint strippers, thinners, and household cleaners, per the <a href="https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ToxProfiles/tp118.pdf">CDC</a>. Most people are exposed to the chemical through breathing in vapors and touching the liquid. The CDC states continuous exposure to the chemical over several hours can cause irritation of the nose and eyes, headache, a metallic taste, or vomiting.<h2>Butyl acrylate</h2>Butyl acrylate is a clear, colorless liquid used in paints, coatings, caulks, sealants, adhesives, per the <a href="https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Butyl-acrylate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">National Library of Medicine</a>.The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/docs/81-123/pdfs/0075.pdf?id=10.26616/NIOSHPUB81123">CDC</a> states acute exposure to butyl acrylate vapor can cause redness, tearing, and irritation of the eyes, a runny nose, difficulty breathing, and redness of the skin. Chronic skin exposure can cause swelling, itching, and oozing in the affected areas. <h2>Ethylhexyl acrylate</h2>Manufacturers use ethylhexyl acrylate, a colorless liquid, to make latex, paints, leather finishes, and coatings for paper, per the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK507491/">NIH</a>. Over exposure to the chemical can cause irritation and drowsiness if inhaled, and throat and mouth irritation if swallowed, according to the chemical distribution company <a href="https://www.fishersci.com/store/msds?partNumber=AC410110010&amp;productDescription=ethylhexyl-acrylate--stabilized-thermo-scientifictrade&amp;vendorId=VN00032119&amp;keyword=true&amp;countryCode=US&amp;language=en">ThermoFisher Scientific</a>.<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-is-vinyl-chloride-what-other-chemicals-were-on-train-derailed-east-palestine-ohio/">Some</a> <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/now/were-more-toxic-chemicals-train-222315612.html">news</a> <a href="https://www.wkbn.com/news/local-news/east-palestine-train-derailment/3-additional-chemicals-discovered-on-east-palestine-train-derailment/">reports</a> have confused ethylhexyl acrylate with the compound <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/default/files/2016-09/documents/ethyl-acrylate.pdf">ethyl acrylate</a>, which is a probable carcinogen. Dannemiller said she is unaware of any data that links cancer to ethylhexyl acrylate, and the NIH <a href="https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/2-Ethylhexyl-acrylate#section=NIOSH-Toxicity-Data">does not</a> list the chemical as a carcinogen.<h2>Isobutylene</h2>Isobutylene is a colorless gas with a faint petroleum-like odor used in making tires, chewing gum, window seals, and food wrap, according to <a href="https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/did-you-know/i-keep-hearing-isobutylene-newswhat-heck-it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McGill University</a>.Isobutylene is highly flammable, per McGill: if an ignition source is present and the temperature is above 80 degrees Celsius, the gas can spark flames. Isobutylene was the source of a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-texas-energy-fire/texas-chemical-plant-fire-kills-one-injures-two-idUSKCN1RE2JS" target="_blank" rel="noopener">major chemical plant fire</a> in 2019 that killed one employee. Inhaling isobutylene can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and unconsciousness, per the <a href="https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/Isobutylene#section=Health-Hazards" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NIH</a>.

The potentially toxic chemicals released in the Ohio train derailment and how they affect human health

New Delhi, Dec 12 () The government may impose anti dumping duty on a chemical used in polyester fibres and films, imported from five countries as the commerce ministry has launched an investigation for the same.
 The ministry's investigation arm DGTR has initiated the probe into an alleged dumping of "Mono Ethylene Glycol" originating in or exported from Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Singapore, following a complaint from a domestic company.
 Reliance industries Ltd has filed an application on behalf of domestic industry before the DGTR for initiation of the investigation.
 According to a notification of the Directorate general of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the company has requested for imposition of anti-dumping duties on the imports.
 India Glycols Limited has also supported the application.
 It said that the authority has prima facie found that there is sufficient evidence of dumping of the chemical from these countries.
 "The Authority hereby initiates an investigation into the alleged dumping and consequent injury to the domestic industry," it said.
 In the probe it would determine the existence, degree and effect of alleged dumping, and consequent injury to the domestic industry.
 If established that dumping has caused material injury to domestic industry, the directorate would recommend the amount of anti-dumping duty.
 The period of investigation is January - September 2019. It would also look at the data of 2016-19.
 Countries carry out anti-dumping probe to determine whether their domestic industries have been hurt because of a surge in cheap imports.
 As a counter measure, they impose duties under the multilateral regime of the World Trade Organization.
 The duty is aimed at ensuring fair trade practices and creating a level-playing field for domestic producers. RR SHW MR
