<p><span></span></p><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.glassdoor.com/Photos/Apple-Office-Photos-E1138_P2.htm">Glassdoor</a></span></p><p class="caption">There's a job opening near here for a barista.</p>Apple is looking for a new barista for its Bay Area visitor center, but aspiring coffee artisans beware: I<span>t doesn't sound like the job will be anything like the typical Starbucks gig. </span><p>The coffee crafter will be tasked with making a "stellar" espresso that lives up to company standards - and those standards are nothing to shrug off.</p><p>For example, design maven Jony Ive and his team of creatives <a href="http://tim.blog/2013/12/08/jony-ive/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A%20timferriss%20(The%20Blog%20of%20Author%20Tim%20Ferriss)">use coffee</a> instead of the blood of teenagers to power through three hour brainstorm meetings, where they do casual things like design the next iPhone. According to Leander Kahney, author of "Jony Ive: The Genius behind Apple's Greatest Products," their meeting room has some sort of insanely expensive espresso machine. It used to be the $3,000 Italian Grimac, but after that machine started leaking, the team replaced it by an unknown but likely equally boffo brewer. </p><p><span>The barista job Apple is currently looking to fill likely won't be making coffee for Ive, but the company has high expectations for the role. Apple is </span><span>still searching for someone who can make a </span><span>stellar beverage "while maintaining speed, quality and consistency." </span></p><p>Those interested in the position should remember that while their customers will be the people who created the products that arguably run the world, they, too, are only human and require coffee to get their mega-brains revved up in the morning. Applicants should also keep in mind that if they don't micro foam their lattes to perfection, they could be held personally responsible for the next MacBook bug. </p><p><span>T</span>he job also requires an "interest in making guest's espresso special <span>À </span>la latte art" while maintaining a positive demeanor. That means the barista should refrain from scowling at the intern who requests that the barista draw a pot leaf in his latte foam every day. </p><p>The visitor center café - where the job is based - could potentially be a grueling place to work. Even though tech offices are often designed to be relaxing, comfortable places that encourage employees to work long hours, the description of the barista job mentions that it could involve "environmental exposure to cold, heat and water."</p><p>That sounds a little ominous. Will crazed engineers be throwing water on you as punishment for subpar coffee? It's hard to say.</p><p>As a kicker, applicants should be aware that, while serving high quality coffee beverages with a smile on their faces to some of the busiest and most stressed out people, they must be "groomed in appearance at all times." Apple is hiring a barista - here's why it might be a very stressful job

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Andrew Stern</span></p><p class="caption">My drink: espresso doppio with one packet of raw sugar.</p></div><p></p></div></div>I'm 29 years old, and I made it through high school, college, my first, second, third, and fourth jobs, and graduate school (which coincidentally included my fifth and sixth jobs simultaneously) without drinking coffee. That's not to say I never used caffeine, but it was rare.</p><p>My caffstinence was not on principle; I simply hated the taste of coffee. It tasted like hot water mixed with dirt. It smelled delicious, but the taste failed to deliver on its olfactory promise.</p><p>Yet in my 29th year, I've become an avid coffee drinker. How did this happen? Well, my journey to the caffeinated promised land followed a roundabout course that began and ends in South America by way of New York City.</p><h3><strong>Summer vacation for (mostly) grown-ups</strong></h3><p>In the summer of 2014, between years one and two of grad school, I was in Brazil filming a documentary that would become my master's thesis film. Those five weeks were intense, intimidating, exhilarating, and imminently rewarding. To cap the trip off, I stayed in the country for weeks six and seven to attend a local soccer tournament called Copa do Mundo (known as The World Cup to Americans).</p><p>It was the second week of the tournament and my body was in open revolt. My three buddies and I were traipsing around the country, drinking until 2 or 3 a.m. routinely, then getting up (somewhat) early every day to either sightsee, watch a game, or go to a game. I was in a continuous state of physical and mental exhaustion. I had a nagging cough and my voice was perpetually hoarse. I felt like I had a permanent low-level hangover. On unfortunate days, the hangover was positively nuclear. Nevertheless, we had to soldier on; America needed us.</p><p>Near the end of the trip in Recife, Brazil, after the Americans had fallen to the Germans 1-0 the day prior, my buddies and I had claimed a spot at a restaurant/bar downtown to watch Brazil take down Chile in the morning game. Four or five hours later, the three of us still standing were like the walking dead. We were as tired as we were drunk, which is to say exhausted.</p><p>My buddy ordered an espresso to inject a little pep into his step. He urged the other two of us to do the same. I figured, <em>What the hell? We have to rally somehow...</em></p><p>Those two ounces changed everything.</p><p>First of all, the espresso (with one packet of sugar, since I'm not that hardcore) was downright delicious. It was so much richer in flavor and texture than coffee. It packed a wallop, too - we were back in action within 15 minutes.</p><p>We didn't need to use espresso again that trip, but the incident stayed with me.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>entreamigosobode.com.br</span></p><p class="caption">The site of my first espresso.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h3><strong>Life A.B. (After Brazil)</strong></h3><p>As it turns out, I didn't drink coffee again during my second year of grad school, either. That all changed with my first job out of grad school. I was hired by CNN on a four-month contract to help curate content for a mobile app concept they were toying with. And while it was an amazing opportunity, there's only so many hours one can stare at a screen reading other people's writing before your eyelids start to droop.</p><p>Luckily for me, the CNN Center in Atlanta has a Starbucks in the lobby - not around the corner, not down the street, in the lobby.</p><p>Schwing.</p><p>Every day, as my eyes got heavy around 3 p.m., I'd saunter on down to the Starbucks stand and grab a single shot of espresso with a half packet of sugar.</p><p>As my caffeine tolerance climbed, I bumped the order to a double with a full packet of sugar. That was enough caffeine to get me through the end of the day without amping me up to the point of getting the jitters. </p><h3><strong>An ocean of espresso in New York </strong></h3><p>When I started working in New York City, the habit followed. But instead of having one realistic option for walkable caffeine, Manhattan boasts an endless supply of roasts: Whether in the guise of giant chains, regional favorites, artisan baristas, or tiny restaurants that happen to have an espresso machine, the island is chock-full of coffee shops.</p><p>There was an ocean of espresso at my fingertips.</p><p>As fate would have it, the documentary film team I work on made going for an afternoon coffee a bit of a tradition. We were editing a film about Ikaria, Greece, where people drink one to two cups of Greek coffee every day. Doctors on the island claim it's a legitimate contributor to the islanders' exceptional longevity (they live up to 10 years longer than anywhere else on Earth). So, we should be drinking really strong coffee in small portions, too, right?</p><p>My producer and I started exploring the espresso/coffee shops in the Flatiron District around Business Insider's office. We'd go to a different joint most every day, which got me thinking, what exactly goes into making the perfect espresso? And why is there so much variety between espresso offerings?</p><p>So I set out to determine the secret to a non-coffee drinker's coffee drink.</p><p>I quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing.</p><h3><strong>The death of caffstinence </strong></h3><p>It came easily enough at first. I preferred espresso to regular coffee because the latter has neither a strong enough flavor nor a thick enough texture for my palette. Also, I'm lactose intolerant, which ruled out pretty much all of the other milk-centric coffee drinks (e.g., latte, cappuccino, macchiato, etc.).</p><p>My drink of choice was settled. Now, to find the perfect espresso.</p><p>The first espresso I ordered from a craft brewer was downright undrinkable. I still don't know enough about the eccentricities of the espresso brewing process to tell you why I hated it; I just knew the acrid, almost sour aftertaste was terrible. If I had to guess, I'd say it was overly concentrated past my taste buds' breaking point.</p><p>So fancy wasn't necessarily better. Check.</p><p>As I talked to baristas in the following weeks, I came to realize there are a lot of things that play into the flavor of a given espresso: the source of the bean, method of harvesting and processing the beans, style of the roast, coarseness of the grind, density of the pack, length of the extraction, exact temperature of the water… I'm sure I have yet to touch on every factor, so you can imagine my feelings of abject ignorance during this experiment.</p><p>The sheer variability notwithstanding, as I made the rounds of shops in walking vicinity, I do think I identified a few trends in the espressos I like the most.</p><p>First of all, I prefer a more robust, chocolatey flavor that's bitter without going into full acrid. There's a reason I liked the espresso in Recife so much - the Brazilian bean fits that flavor profile exactly. Subsequently, most of my favorite espressos are either single source Brazilian brews or are a blend with a Brazilian base (which also explains why I liked Starbucks' offering).</p><p>Second, I like a 4-ounce double-shot. Many artisanal shops pour a double as their standard, but in a 2-ounce pour, which is why I think it's too concentrated for me. Again, I could be totally wrong in that reasoning, but it makes sense conceptually.</p><p>In addition to loving Brazilian beans, the Italian espresso machines/barista methods seem to strike a chord with my taste buds.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Andrew Stern</span></p><p class="caption">I've learned that I prefer espresso pulled from an Italian machine.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The best espresso I've found to date is at a <a href="http://www.alvicolettonyc.com/">little Italian restaurant on 17th</a> between 5th and Broadway. It's not even a coffee shop; they just happen to stock great coffee beans and do whatever it is a great barista does to make liquid ambrosia. It truly is the nectar of the gods.</p><p>That's not to say hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurants are the only purveyors of excellent espresso. But, something about their bean + barista(s) + brewing method combination checks all of my espresso boxes.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Andrew Stern</span></p><p class="caption">Get a great espresso outside the coffee shop.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>If you find coffee too watered down and/or lacking flavor, yet you crave the payoff promised on other end of the delicious scents emanating from your local coffee shop, the right espresso might do you right.</p><p>Likewise, you might even love some of the more involved milk-centric drinks, but being as I can't drink them, you'll have to research those on your own.</p><p>If you're anything like me, though, look for a Brazilian-based blend, an Italian espresso machine, and a 4-ounce pour.</p><p>Like Julia Roberts in "Runaway Bride," the journey to your preferred style of eggs is an exercise in personal identity and self-discovery. On the same day former President Donald Trump and her fellow top House Republicans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-backs-elise-stefanik-replace-liz-cheney-gop-leadership-2021-5">signaled their turns against her</a>, she wrote a scorching Washington Post op-ed article arguing that Trump's refusal to accept he lost the 2020 election was an unprecedented assault on American democracy. Meet the Prince devotee teaching yoga and meditation to burned-out DC Democratic insiders: </strong>Reggie Hubbard is an Ivy League progressive activist turned yogi who has been helping his friends in politics heal through yoga, meditation, and - when the moment calls for it - the music of Prince. Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, during her previous job as a member of Congress, have taken classes with Hubbard. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/progressive-prince-yoga-meditation-burnout-capitol-hill-biden-democratic-politics-2021-5">More about the activist who has led protests and is a yoga guy</a>.</p><ul><li><strong>Key quote: </strong>"I really value the fact that Reggie is this unicorn and he is someone who is both in the movement and someone who was thinking a lot about the health and well-being of the movement," said Muthoni Wambu Kraal, the Democratic National Committee's national political and organizing director last cycle.</li></ul><p><strong>5. A federal judge scrapped a nationwide moratorium on evictions: </strong>Judge Dabney Friedrich ruled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention overstepped its authority when the moratorium was put in place during the Trump administration. It is now set to expire June 30. The ruling adds further chaos to the system that has continued to evict some renters <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/05/05/federal-judge-vacates-cdcs-nationwide-eviction-moratorium/">because of loopholes and different interpretations</a>, The Post reports. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-judge-blocks-eviction-moratorium-cdc-2021-5">The Biden administration quickly appealed the decision and is fighting to delay Friedrich's ruling from taking effect</a>.</p><p><strong>6. Conservatives are apoplectic over Trump's Facebook ban: </strong>Trump, his former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, and other conservative lawmakers torched the Facebook review board's decision not to immediately let him back on the platform. <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-facebook-social-media-republicans/2021/05/05/919cb430-adb1-11eb-acd3-24b44a57093a_story.html">Republicans framed the decision as an example of social-media bias against conservatives</a>.</p><ul><li><strong>What's next: </strong>Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg pledged to obey whatever the mostly independent board decided, but the board didn't fully come down on one side. It agreed with the initial decision to suspend Trump's account but also slammed the indefinite nature of the punishment, saying it was "indeterminate and standardless." <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-donald-trump-oversight-board-ban-account-capitol-siege-2021-4">It urged Facebook to review its decision within six months</a>.</li></ul><p><strong style="color: #222222;">7. Caitlyn Jenner repeatedly mentioned her private plane in an interview with Sean Hannity: </strong>"My friends are leaving California," Jenner, who is running to be California's governor, told the Fox News host. "My hangar, the guy right across, he was packing up his hangar and I said, 'Where are you going?' And he says, 'I'm moving to Sedona, Arizona, I can't take it anymore. Thieves jacked the Republican National Committee for fancy cups of Joe: </strong>Fraudsters stole almost $44,000 just before the 2020 election from the Republican National Committee - another in a string of thefts from prominent federal political operations. The thieves spent more than $35,500 of the RNC's money at EZ Coffee &amp; Tea, a Pennsylvania-based merchant that sells various products including high-end espresso machines. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/republican-national-committee-theft-fraud-money-fec-elections-2021-5">The RNC initially described the thefts as "office supplies" purchases</a>.</p><p><strong>9. A GOP-backed Arizona auditing group is burrowing through ballots in search of bamboo fibers and Chinese paper: </strong>The group wants to prove the far-fetched theory that 40,000 ballots for Biden were flown in from Asia and smuggled into the state. 10 Things in Politics: Cheney goes down swinging in Trump fight

It also happened 16 years ago - and it was a disaster for the coffee chain. </p><p>In 2000, Schultz stepped down after a 13-year run as CEO. He assumed the role of chairman, with the mission of focusing on the company's global strategy. </p><p>Then Starbucks had only 2,800 stores and earned roughly $2 billion in annual revenue. There were <a href="http://cnnfn.cnn.com/2000/04/06/companies/starbucks/">just 350 Starbucks locations outside the US.</a></p><p>In the seven weeks after Schultz stepped down in 2000, shares fell 28%, <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/last-time-howard-schultz-stepped-down-at-starbucks-shares-cratered-2016-12-01">MarketWatch</a> reported.</p><p>But the company soon began a steady recovery. Under Schultz's replacement, Orin Smith, Starbucks' business exploded, with store count tripling to 9,000 locations. At the time, Schultz said Donald was picked for his <a href="http://www.seattlepi.com/business/article/Jim-Donald-brings-new-energy-to-Starbucks-CEO-post-1169846.php">stamina and hands-on approach, </a>which Starbucks hoped would be assets as the chain swiftly expanded and built its food business. By 2007, the company had roughly 13,000 locations worldwide.  </p><p>Soon, however, it became clear that Starbucks' had opened too many stores too quickly. With increased pressure from brands like McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts, the chain struggled to continue to attract new customers and grow sales. </p><p>"I have said for 20 years that our success is not an entitlement and now it's proving to be a reality," Schultz wrote in <a href="http://starbucksgossip.typepad.com/_/2007/02/starbucks_chair_2.html">a leaked memo </a>to Donald in February 2007. In the note he said the chain had watered down its brand with changes such as automatic espresso machines and more "sterile" store designs. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Bloomberg/AP</span></p><p class="caption">Howard Schultz and Jim Donald</p></div><p></p></div></div>Starbucks stock plummeted 42% in 2007 as the Great Recession took hold. </p><p><span>"The damage was slow and quiet, incremental, like a single loose thread that unravels a sweater inch by inch," Schultz said of Starbucks' troubles in his book, </span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Onward-Starbucks-Fought-without-Losing/dp/1605292885?tag=bisafetynet-20">Onward</a><span>.</span></p><p>In January 2008, Starbucks fired Donald and Schultz returned as CEO.</p><p>Schultz debuted an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/howard-schultz-turned-starbucks-around-2011-6?op=1/#so-for-the-first-time-ever-starbucks-invested-in-a-major-national-advertising-campaign-employing-bbdo-4">aggressive turnaround plan</a> with steps that included temporarily closing all US stores to re-train employees on how to make an espresso. Starbucks appointed the company's first chief technology officer and debuted its now legendary Starbucks' rewards card. In early 2009, the company closed 600 under-preforming US stores, 70% of which had been open for three years or less. </p><p>Within two years of Schultz's return, the company was back on track. Starbucks' stock hit a then all-time-high in mid-2011, beating its previous record set in 2006. The company's stock reached its peak of $<span>62.61 in October 2015</span>. </p><p>The company's struggles from 2000 to 2008 make Schultz's recent decision to step down as CEO seem like an uneasy proposition for the company. However, Schultz has said his exit as CEO will be very different in 2016 than it was in 2000. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Starbucks</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"The differences between then and now couldn't be greater. In 2007, 2008, the country was going through a cataclysmic financial crisis that affected all companies, especially consumer brands, and Starbucks was not immune," Schultz said in a call with investors on Thursday. </p><p>Schultz said he believes Starbucks' management team today has capabilities and experience the company lacked in 2000. </p><p>"On a personal level, I don't think I was as prepared then as I am now, primarily because of my confidence in the strategy, my confidence in the team, and my deep deep respect for Kevin Johnson as a servant leader," Schultz said. </p><p>Schultz may now take a more hands-on approach to his role on the board than he did in the past, a period during which he said he <a href="https://hbr.org/2010/06/howard-schultz-on-starbucks-tu">"wasn't engaged"</a> enough to notice and halt the company's downfall. </p><p><span>"I'm not leaving the company. Here's what happened the last time Howard Schultz stepped down as Starbucks CEO

<p>Back in December, I moved to London to work in Business Insider's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/photos-business-insider-london-office-2014-6?op=1">newly opened UK bureau</a> after living in New York City for a year and a half.</p><p>I'm an Ohio native, so these are the two big cities that I know best. While I definitely miss some aspects of New York City life - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/whats-it-like-to-live-in-london-england-2015-1">like custom salads and liquid butter on popcorn</a> - London just does some things better than the Big Apple.</p><p>Here's what I like better about life in London:</p><h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></h2><h2>Buses</h2><p>London is known for its iconic, red double-decker buses, and for good reason. They might get a little rowdy at night, but they're mostly clean and comfortable and get you from point A to point B pretty easily. New York City buses tend to be more crowded, slow, and dingy. The biggest perk of the London buses is getting to sit up top and enjoy the view out of the big window in front. It's like taking a comfortable city tour for £1.50 ($2.37).</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Subway</h2><p>Speaking of public transportation, the London Underground is miles ahead of the New York City subway in terms of design and cleanliness. The stations are heated and look more modern than the subway stations in New York, and the trains themselves have padded seats instead of the hard plastic found on New York's subway trains. The downside, as you can see above, is that the tube's compact design makes it hard to squeeze onto some trains during rush hour.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Indian food</h2><p>There's no shortage of good Indian food in London. It's certainly possible to find Indian food in New York, but it's not as prevalent or typically as good. In London, you can find high-end Indian, quick lunch spots for delicious curry, and sit-down restaurants that are more mid-market. It's a nice departure from the Italian and Mexican food that's more common (and better) in New York.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Coffee</h2><p>Many people in Britain scoff at the "drip" coffee that Americans drink, and stores have a bigger selection of espresso machines than regular coffee makers. If you ask for coffee at a cafe or lunch spot, the person behind the counter will often assume you mean some sort of espresso-and-milk drink rather than the kind of coffee that slow-drips into a pot.</p><p>Espresso drinks typically have a better flavor and texture than regular coffee, so this is a welcome change for me. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But American troops who served overseas in World War II didn't seem to agree. </span><a href="http://atwar.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/16/the-marines-secret-weapon-coffee/">They watered down espresso to make it taste more like the coffee they were used to</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, hence the name of the espresso-and-water drink we know as the "Americano."</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Architecture</h2><p>New York has some great architecture, but London is older and has fewer skyscrapers and more intricately designed buildings. London is much more spread out than New York, and the winding brick and cobblestone streets in central and western London are incredibly charming.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Real estate</h2><p>I've found London's real estate market much easier to navigate than New York's.</p><p>London apartments still cost a lot of money to rent, but the inventory is better and the apartments are bigger. Most of them also come fully furnished, and the leases are much more flexible. Six-month leases are common here, but in New York nearly every landlord wants to lock you in to a full-year lease.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Bars</h2><p>The pubs I've wandered into in London are, on average, far better than your average New York bar. They're incredibly cozy and charming. From the flower boxes that adorn the outside of pubs to the bookshelves and armchairs inside them, London pubs feel more like a living room than a dive.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Markets</h2><p>New York has plenty of farmers markets, especially in spring and summer. However, <a href="http://www.timeout.com/london/shopping/london-markets">London markets</a> are a more regular installation in many neighborhoods across the city, and they offer a wide variety of goods, produce, and prepared foods.</p><p>There's the Columbia Road Flower Market for greenery and flowers, Borough Market for freshly prepared food and local ingredients, and Brick Lane Market for fashion. Going to a market is a regular weekend activity for many people in London.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>TV News</h2><p>Television news programs aren't nearly as hyperlocal as they are in the US. I hear a lot more international news on Sky, ITV, and BBC than I did on most news channels back in the US. 9 things I've found London does much better than New York

<p>That's because Andy Rubin, the former Google executive responsible for creating Android, loved playing with gadgets so much he'd constantly bring his own projects into the office.</p>
<p>These gizmos ranged from gigantic, expensive robots that would show you how to make the perfect espresso to tiny motorized figurines that could cartwheel around the office, Sumit Agarwal, a former product manager at Google and co-founder of startup <a href="https://www.shapesecurity.com/">Shape Security</a>, told Business Insider. </p>
<p>One of Rubin's more memorable contraptions, according to Agarwal, was a giant remote-controlled helicopter.</p>
<p>"[It's] this huge $5,000 helicopter, he's trying to pilot it, and it takes off and flips over upside down," Agarwal said. "And it doesn't explode, but you've got this helicopter that's literally ripped itself apart out on the lawn in front of Building 44."</p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Rubin <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/andy-rubin-out-of-google-2014-10">recently left Google to pursue a new startup </a>after working at the company for about nine years. Agarwal worked at Google for about seven years between 2003 and 2010, where he primarily worked on Google's mobile products. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Other than his massive collection of eccentric gadgets, Agarwal said there's one particular reason he'll always remember working with Rubin. </span></p>
<p>"The thing that I will remember the most clearly, forever, is how perfectly formed his vision for Android was," Agarwal said. "That fully formed vision existed in 2003, and it was a reality by 2011 or 2012, but it didn't change. He saw it 10 years in advance."</p>

A Former Google Employee Talks About What It Was Like Working With The Genius That Created Android

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Wheelys Café</span></p><p class="caption">A Wheelys Café in Paris.</p></div><p></p></div></div><a href="https://wheelyscafe.com/">Wheelys</a></span><span>, made up of over 550 bicycle carts and quasi-employees, is <span>quietly becoming</span><span> one of the world's fastest growing café chains. With mobile locations in 65 countries - more than Starbucks - it's pushing against the notion that a café needs to stay in one place.</span></span></p><p>"Inspired by Airbnb and Uber's new way of doing business, we wanted to find a way of bypassing the old laws of the industry by not buying physical space," Wheelys co-founder and CEO Maria De La Croix tells Business Insider.</p><p><span>Anyone can start their own Wheelys café and buy a bike cart, which is tricked out with a sink, storage, a register, an umbrella, espresso machines, and juicers. All that gear allows cart owners to serve coffee, chocolates, and pastries rain or shine. </span></p><p><span>The carts have a lot of moving pa<span>rts. If a customer orders a coffee, the bike's owner lifts a module's compartment and slides out a platform for a row of pour over brewers.</span></span></p><p><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image"></div></div></span></span></p><p><span>Wheelys, which launched in Stockholm in 2014, has </span><span>only 10 employees at its offices in Stockholm, the US, and China. But people </span>all over the world have bought its bikes. <span><span>In 2015, Wheelys was backed by Y-Combinator, </span><span>an incubator for emerging tech companies. And in August, it <a href="https://www.fundedbyme.com/en/campaign/7681/wheelys-cafe-worlds-fastest-growing-cafe-chain/activity/">raised</a> over $940,000 <span>on the Swedish crowdfunding platform </span><a href="https://www.fundedbyme.com/en/" target="_blank">FundedByMe</a>.</span></span></p><p>Since the chain launched, it has doubled its number of locations every six months, and <span>De La Croix says it plans to continue to keep expanding at that pace.</span></p><p><span>This month, it opened a new assembly plant, where the team makes the bikes. The latest rendition of the solar-powered bike includes seven retractable modules, so owners can transform their café into a juice bar, ice cream shop, or place for crepes whenever they choose.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Wheelys Café</span></p><p class="caption">A Wheelys Café in Phoenix, Arizona.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span><span>Wheelys' ultimate goal is to challenge legacy coffee shops and cafés, like Starbucks.</span></span></p><p><span><span><span>There are approximately <a href="http://www.statisticbrain.com/starbucks-company-statistics/">12,000</a> Starbucks in the US, and in many large cities like New York and Los Angeles, it feels like there's one on every corner. It's becoming increasingly difficult for new independent cafés to compete, <span>De La Croix </span>says. Depending on location, a startup café's monthly rent costs can be <a href="http://espresso101.com/coffee_faq.html">a couple hundred thousand dollars</a> or more. </span></span></span></p><p>A Wheelys bike, on the other hand, starts at a flat fee of $7,000 without the monthly rent. Add-on modules, which can make items like juices or crepes, cost an additional $450 to $3,000. The bikes' owners need to purchase the items from Wheelys and the chain sets the prices (which De La Croix says are "a bit higher than mid-range"), but the owners keep all of their profits. Over half the products are organic or fair-trade.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>De La Croix says her company's main advantage over traditional cafes is in the bike's portability. A Y Combinator-backed bicycle cafe is now in more countries than Starbucks

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Driverless cars are no longer a question of "if" or even&#xa0;"when?"<p>Instead, the tech industry is starting to ask a crucial follow-up question: How?</p><p>I spent a couple days last week&#xa0;at Code/Mobile, a conference for tech executives, and not a single person I saw,&#xa0;either on stage or in private conversation, doubted the rise of autonomous cars.</p><p>Google's cute, mini Koala-like car is perhaps the most visible prototype of the future. But there are <a href="https://www.cbinsights.com/blog/autonomous-driverless-vehicles-corporations-list/">at least 25 other companies</a>&#xa0;also working on driverless technology.</p><p>In a presentation for the company last week, Google's head of self-driving cars, John Krafcik, equated the number of people who die in crashes every year (1.2 million) to five Boeing 737s crashing every week.&#xa0;</p><p>"A<span>ny delay in getting autonomy out there is a crime," said Mark Platshon, an adviser to the BMW i-Ventures Fund, on-stage at Code/Mobile in Half Moon Bay, California.&#xa0;</span>&#xa0;</p><p>Despite the consensus and excitement that driverless cars&#xa0;are coming, tech industry leaders&#xa0;didn't&#xa0;agree on what that&#xa0;future will look like.</p><h2>Different definitions of "driverless"</h2><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-10-million-self-driving-cars-will-be-on-the-road-by-2020-2015-05">Business Insider Intelligence has estimated</a> that more than 10 million self-driving cars will be hitting the roads by 2020, but many people have different ideas on what they'll actually be doing.&#xa0;</p><p>We're already seeing a divergence in the testing phase.&#xa0;Japan is testing "<a href="http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/05/driverless-robot-taxis-to-be-tested-in-japanese-town">robot taxis</a>" in a trial run ahead of the 2020 Olympics. Google is cruising around in self-driving SUVs in Austin, Texas, and Palo Alto, California. Uber has its own permit to test in Arizona, and its end game is integrating those cars into its ride-hailing network.</p><p>In conversations with more than a dozen tech executives, it became clear that "driverless cars"&#xa0;means something different for each person. One tech exec thought the launch would be geared toward suburban driving, not fast lane changes or high volume on the interstate. His car would drive him to the grocery store and back.</p><p>Some visions for the future even include a car with an espresso machine for a lounge-like vibe.</p><p><div></div></p><p>Some car companies&#xa0;envision a semi-autonomous car, where a driver will still need to be behind the wheel.</p><p>Nissan's head of autonomous car research described the range of control&#xa0;as a "sliding autonomy" where people will want to take the wheel when it suits them. The future of truly driverless cars, like Google's pod, may take a lot longer.&#xa0;</p><p>For the truly self-driving pods to work best, they need an environment where they operate without humans driving multi-ton death machines in their midst.</p><p>Others think consumers won't be the first to get self-driving vehicles.</p><p>One executive bet that the first application would be in long-haul trucking and cargo <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword>, not humans, to mitigate risk. <span>Others imagine them first&#xa0;being deployed in controlled environments, like a college campus or an office park, where autonomous cars can drive the accident rate down to almost nil.</span></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Many tech executives wondered how our cities will change and whether or not they can change fast enough. Should Market Street in San Francisco be limited to&#xa0;autonomous cars and buses? A <a href="http://www.sonos.com/system">Sonos</a> system streams music throughout the house while guests check out a large selection of wearable tech from Garmin and Fitbit. <p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">"Growing fruits and vegetables at home is a great way to keep food production local and literally within the family, and the marketplace for new products and innovations in this field gets more interesting every year," Manaugh said to Business Insider.</span></p>
<p>Gizmodo's selection includes a self-watering, s<a href="http://thereplenishingtower.com/">elf-replenishing tower</a> that would make it easy for city-dwellers to grow fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices in their kitchens. <a href="http://www.windowfarms.com/">Windowfarms</a> also makes garden wall units that are easy to install. </p>

<p>"<span>We've been joking that the future looks great-but it requires an awful lot of electricity. <span>That's not going to work for a lot of reasons, from climate change to simply being able to pay our own utility bills,</span> " Manaugh said. "T<span>he discovery or invention of new sources of power will be central to any high-tech vision of </span><span><span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1117933466"><span class="aQJ">tomorrow</span></span></span><span>."</span></span></p>
<p><span><span>One way to cut down on excess energy is to make more efficient gadgets, meaning they're either manufactured more efficiently or designed to make better use of their batteries. Cardboard wine bottles in Gizmodo's kitchen, for example, require less energy to produce than do more traditional glass bottles. </span></span></p>

<p><span><span>There's also potential for inventing completely new energy sources, in addition to solar and wind power.</span></span></p>
<p>"One of my favorite things here in the Home is actually <a href="http://homeofthefuture.gizmodo.com/this-illuminated-artwork-is-powered-by-plant-eating-bac-1577642231">an art project </a>made by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania that uses electricity generated from microbes in soil to make a small screen light up," Manaugh said. "The idea is that, someday, maybe micro-organisms in the ground itself could power our phones and tablets."</p>

<p><strong>Facebook's </strong>auto-play video ads, a potential huge money stream for the company that has been in the works for some time, might not show up in news feeds until as late as this summer, <a href="http://mashable.com/2014/02/12/facebook-auto-play-video-ads-q1/">Mashable reports</a>. The company did a test of the ads with film studio Lions Gate Entertainment in December, but it's still tweaking the product and looking over reviews of the test run.  </p>
<p><strong>Lowe Campbell Ewald's</strong> recently opened New York office <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/agencyspy/lowe-campbell-ewald-ny-snags-first-win-reveals-rest-of-client-list_b60744">won its first new client</a>, the espresso machine and small appliance maker De'Longhi North America.</p>
<p><strong>R/GA's </strong>John Antinori, a 15-year employee most recently working as EVP/chief production officer, has left the firm, <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/agencyspy/antinori-out-at-rga_b60730">AgencySpy reports</a>.</p>
<p>Droga5 and Hush teamed up to make <a href="http://my.nycfc.com/">a neat little interactive site</a> for <strong>New York City FC</strong>, the forthcoming New York-based MLS team owned by Manchester City and the New York Yankees. The site allows fans to design and share their own club crests, with several designs coming from iconic New York businesses like The Strand, Manhattan's gigantic and life-affirming book store.</p>
<p><strong>Comcast </strong>acquired <strong>Time Warner Cable </strong><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/comcast-to-buy-time-warner-cable-2014-2">in a deal that values the latter at around $45 billion</a>. If approved, the merger would consolidate the two biggest U.S. cable providers. Lord willing, Comcast won't lay a finger on NY1.</p>
<p>Speaking of Time Warner Cable, <strong>Apple</strong> is in negotiations with the company and other potential partners to bring video content to <a href="http://adage.com/article/media/apple-talks-put-time-warner-cable-apple-tv-box/291664/">a new set-top TV box</a> it plans to release as early as April</p>
<p><strong>Puma </strong><a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/agencyspy/digitaslbi-nabs-puma-global-digital-duties_b60712">appointed DigitasLBI as its global digital agency</a> two months after naming JWT its lead creative agency.</p>
<p><strong>NBC </strong>is enjoying a ratings boom at this year's Winter Olympics, and the company has started <a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/television/winter-olympics-update-nbc-pink-155690">selling off excess advertising inventory</a> it had originally held back in the event that the ratings didn't live up to what it had promised marketers.</p>

Facebook Auto-Play Video Ads On Hold Once Again [THE BRIEF]

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">If you can land an internship at one of <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>'s major tech companies, you're likely going to have an awesome experience doing innovative work while making a great salary.</span></p>
<p>The perks aren't too bad either.</p>
<p>We recently found a Quora thread <a href="http://www.quora.com/Internships/What-Silicon-Valley-company-has-the-best-intern-perks">detailing firsthand some of the coolest intern perks in tech</a>. We've pulled out some of our favorites below from three of the biggest companies in Silicon Valley and one nearby powerhouse.</p>

<p>"Each year, Signature Week is culminated by the Signature Event, the details of which are kept a secret until the very last moment. Interns are herded onto buses and taken to some mystery location. This year, we arrived at an int<span>erns-only concert at Boeing Headquarters ... The concert was opened by Macklemore (who is, not coincidentally, a Seattle native) and finished by Deadmau5 - and each intern walked away with a 256GB Surface Pro."</span></p>
<p><span>"<span>Most i</span></span>nterns got an office to themselves, and the rest shared an office. Some interns ended up working in shared spaces with their entire team because of some big pushes, but even those interns had an office assigned to them. No setup that I saw had less than two monitors, devs had two computers, and as I understand it you could ask for whatever else you needed."</p>
<p>"The cafeteria hosts local restaurants that change each day. The pizza place was a permanent fixture, and I honestly think I miss it as much as the work."</p>
