She decided not to put her name on it at first because she wanted to prove to herself and others she could succeed without the clout she'd already built."Nobody will be able to say, 'Oh, well that's just a model with a brand, that's why she has a clothing line,'" she said. "No. I was like, I'm the investor, I'm the founder, I'm the designer, I'm the creator, I'm the marketer. I'm everything."The brand focuses on sports and loungewear - sweatsuits, tank tops, and bike shorts that she says are more light-wearing and better fitting than many of the brands in the saturated market. "If it's a relationship it's definitely private. Guests included YouTubers <keyword id="8016339" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nikita-dragun">Nikita Dragun</keyword>, James Charles, Emma Chamberlain, and Tana Mongeau, along with TikTokers Charli and Dixie D'Amelio. The occasion was a birthday party for TikToker Larri Merritt (known online as Larray).According to Elijah Daniel, an LA-based creator, "a lot of influencers have been confirmed to me testing positive for COVID-19 after the influencer parties, like a LOT." Daniel tweeted about the influencer "outbeak" on July 28, adding "And they aren't saying anything &amp; aren't warning people they came in contact with after." Daniel told Insider he wasn't going to call out specific influencers by name — yet. Some influencers have seemingly confirmed they haven't gotten the coronavirus, with several alluding to or stating that they have been tested regularly.Charles <a href="https://www.insider.com/james-charles-apologizes-for-partying-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-7">apologized for attending</a> Larray's birthday in a recent vlog and said he has tested negative "multiple times." In the vlog Tanner Fox says he was in close proximity to Paul two days prior, on or around July 13 — the day before Paul's party. On camera, Fox calls Paul and gives him the <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword>. Paul says he doesn't care about having potentially been exposed, and says a doctor had just tested him at his home prior to Fox's call. Paul and his team didn't self-quarantine after exposure. In his vlog, Fox says he had just started experiencing symptoms that morning. But according <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/if-youve-been-exposed-to-the-coronavirus">to Harvard Medical School</a>, a person with COVID-19 may be contagious 48 to 72 hours before showing symptoms, and emerging research shows that period may be when people <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/if-youve-been-exposed-to-the-coronavirus">are most likely</a> to spread the virus.Harvard Medical School also says a COVID-19 test is <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/if-youve-been-exposed-to-the-coronavirus#:~:text=In%20the%20US%2C%20the,a%20test%20becomes%20positive.">will produce</a> a false negative 40% of the time if a person is tested within four days of exposure and 100% of the time if the test is conducted the day of exposure.<h2>Party-goers were subjected to strong online backlash, but that hasn't stopped them from continuing to go out </h2>None of the influencers who partied at the Hype House responded to Insider's request for comment, but several of them continued to go out. On July 25, Mongeau attended an indoor party with influencer Erika Costell and recorded a video of the two maskless, in close proximity, for her Instagram story. Mongeau and Costell have since apologized, and Mongeau told fans she would stop attending parties and start social distancing. She has not posted to her Instagram story, where she previously chronicled outings, since. Larray <a href="https://twitter.com/larrayxo/status/1286042647618961408">also apologized</a> and has posted himself self-quarantining after the Hype House party. Dragun, however, threw another gathering at the Hype House, to celebrate another member's birthday. Social media sleuth Def Noodles noted on Twitter that "It appears to be much smaller in scale than Larray's party."Despite continued non-adherence to social distancing guidelines, influencers have faced considerable online backlash. Tana Mongeau's MTV show 'No Filter' will not return for a third season

She had been <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-racist-tweets-allegations-response-to-her-past-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accused of racist microaggressions</a> in videos posted in June and July by two <keyword id="1112328" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Influencers">influencers</keyword> she used to work with — Kahlen Barry and <a href="https://youtu.be/mVplcecMjzY" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Simplynessa15</a> (Nessa Briella) — and immediately came under pressure to respond.But while Mongeau kept posting Instagram stories with promises of addressing the allegations and concerns, it took over three months to publish her <keyword id="3329321" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="apology-video">apology video</keyword>.Mongeau is one of YouTube's most popular creators, who has risen to fame over the last six years with her candid, over-the-top storytime videos, and controversies such as her <a href="https://www.insider.com/timeline-of-jake-paul-and-tana-mongeaus-relationship-2019-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">turbulent relationship with fellow YouTuber Jake Paul</a>.She spoke to Insider about the things she had to face up to about herself over the summer, and how she's still on a learning curve to be a worthy role model to her 5.5 million-strong fanbase.<h2>Tana Mongeau and Kahlen Barry's friendship</h2>Barry posted his video, "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAev3BVNh6g&amp;t=2st=2s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">finally revealing the truth about Tana Mongeau</a>," on June 16 where he accused Mongeau of gaslighting and dismissing his feelings and concerns over her using racial slurs <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf2qWFW-VvY&amp;ab_channel=KTl=KT" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in old footage</a> and <a href="https://twitter.com/needysmiIe/status/1274931799253118976" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social media posts</a> when they worked together in 2016.<a href="https://www.insider.com/racist-jokes-microaggressions-and-tokenism-in-the-influencer-world-2020-8">Barry told Insider</a> he stood by Mongeau publicly at the time due to having a collaborative channel together, but voiced his concerns to her in private. He said Mongeau was not receptive of what he had to say, making him feel like she was dismissing him as an "angry Black person.""It was very shocking," Mongeau said of watching the video for the first time. "It's definitely not something I saw coming at all."She said her initial reaction to the internalized shame and anger at what she was watching was to start questioning everything she knew about herself. But instead of facing up to her past, she sought to distract herself from it at parties and gatherings. This, in hindsight, was the catalyst for further harming her relationship with Barry and her fans.<div type="image" title="Tana Mongeau and Kahlen Barry" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78558046" hostid="261"></div>Fans and commentators were left confused by Mongeau's reaction when she promised to address Barry's story then went silent on the matter for weeks on end. Instead of explanations, they saw Mongeau partying — often maskless — on her Instagram story.In one particularly memorable clip, Mongeau and Erika Costell — another ex-girlfriend of Jake Paul — <a href="https://www.popbuzz.com/internet/youtubers/tana-mongeau-erika-costell-coronavirus-party/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the camera they "don't f---ing care."</a> What Mongeau and Costell had meant as a reference to old tensions between them was taken as a blatant disregard for public health and their fans' opinions.This also led many to see Mongeau's support of the Black Lives Matter movement as performative, and culminated in many more negative videos about her behavior."It's unfortunate because I look back and I would have handled things so differently now with all of the things that I feel I've learned over this time," Mongeau said. "I just feel like I was in an industry, and still am in an industry, where the normality has always been to handle those situations internally and push things under the rug and not address them head-on."<h2>'That video was a really big wake up call for me'</h2>She said she wished she had reached out to Barry directly as soon as he'd posted his video to apologize; to have a conversation about what really happened between them. But as a very emotionally reactive person, Mongeau couldn't take the pressure and "ran away" from what was happening.She said she didn't see Barry's video any differently to the masses of videos made about her every day, picking apart her mistakes and reminding her when she falls short of people's expectations. She had normalized the negative attention, she said, and had learned to no longer bother watching videos with her name in."It wasn't even until I realized that this situation was very different that I dove into these videos and began to start really watching everything Kahlen was saying and researching stuff," she said. "This was definitely an eyeopening situation, and that video was a really big wake up call for me."She said it was also a mistake to promise videos that she wasn't "in the headspace" to deliver."I was so afraid of people being angry with me," she said. "My entire career, that's what you're taught by everyone in the industry — whenever people are angry at you, the best thing you can do is just try to make people like you again."<div type="image" title="Tana Mongeau" height="1500" width="2000" msid="78558048" hostid="261"></div>When Mongeau finally did post her apology video, it wasn't met with praise. It currently stands at 107,000 dislikes to 39,000 likes and the comments are flooded with criticisms of Mongeau's robotic, emotionless delivery, over-use of jump cuts, and lack of clarity about what she was actually apologizing for.Mongeau said she understands why people were disappointed and frustrated with how she came across, and would rewind to do it all differently if she could. She said it was the one time she really needed to connect with her fans, but she failed."I was so afraid of putting any ounce of emotion into that video," she said. "I wrote out bullet points and I simply read them point-blank with no emotion ... And people did not like that."She said she still stands by everything she said — that she's sorry for her past actions, but she is not a racist person."I just think I could have delivered it in a far better way," she said.<h2>The apology wasn't accepted</h2>Mongeau hasn't spoken to Barry directly yet, which is why <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-apology-video-kahlen-barry-simply-nessa-briella-2020-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">neither Barry nor Briella accepted her apology</a>. She said she doesn't know if she will reach out because she doesn't know if Barry would want to talk to her, but it is something she thinks about every day."I want to know the right thing to do without stepping on any toes or further upsetting Kahlen, and further angering him in any way," she said. '"I just don't know where we stand and it breaks my heart."Mongeau said she isn't sure Barry wants to hear from her, whether that's in private or a live stream conversation, and is trying to figure out the best "public approach" to "address so many of my angering and frustrating actions." (Barry has told Insider several times he only ever wanted a private apology and was against her making a public video about his accusations.)<div type="image" title="tana mongeau shane" height="720" width="960" msid="78558051" hostid="261"></div>Mongeau said one thing she can do is to show her followers through her actions that "there's not an ounce of me that is micro-aggressively racist.""I know for a fact that is not who I am as a person, and I will continue to clarify that until the day that I die," she said."But if I ever hurt [Barry] in any way, all I want to do is apologize for the pain that I've caused, no matter what. And it's a hard situation to find peace in knowing that someone might always think that no matter what you say."<h2>The endless apology video cycle</h2>Mongeau has posted several apology videos over her YouTube career, and said she wanted to end that cycle of making mistakes and apologizing. She said she would rather address mistakes when she makes them, instead of contributing more apologies into the internet space that people may not take seriously.She said she also understands and validates many of the claims made about her behavior over the last few months."If it wasn't for their voices and the things they were saying to me, I would not have been so hard on myself and actually faced a lot of these things and grown so much," she said."And I understand their frustration with everything I was doing, from partying, to saying videos were going to be out, and then not putting them out, to being emotionless and dry in my actual video, to continuing to just be frustrating."She said her focus is now on building the trust with her audience back by trying to be the best role model possible, rather than "someone that's known as just problematic." Part of that is going to be sharing the journey she's been on with a therapist in upcoming videos."It was having life coaches come in, it was struggles with sobriety, it was a terrible unearthing of so many demons and it's been just very ... not cute," she said. "A lot of the things [my followers] were calling me out for, I was realizing at that time."<h2>Being a better role model</h2>For the first five years of her career, Mongeau refused to take on the title of a role model. She now realizes there came a point where it's wasn't her choice anymore, and she can no longer ignore that she is an influence on millennials and Gen Z. Part of coming to terms with that is learning about herself and her flaws, she said."I think this situation taught me a lot about myself and the way I've always so explosively handled problems like that," she said. "I've always handled situations like this incorrectly, and this was definitely the moment where all of that kind of came to a head and I realized that I didn't want to continue to live my life like that."Whatever happens, Mongeau said she wants to come from a place of complete honesty from now on, which includes talking more about her mental health and taking responsibility for her actions during "downfalls or nights where I am my absolute worst.""It's not my place to expect or ask forgiveness," she said. Tana Mongeau talks racism accusations, the end of apology videos, and becoming a better role model

"At the end of the day, I'm not gonna let it stop me from partying."The student was almost universally vilified for what <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2020/03/19/selfish-spring-breakers-wont-let-coronavirus-stop-partying-12423823/">critics</a> said was a self-serving mindset. But it was just a taste of the pandemic partying that was to come, which has been most notably paraded by top influencers in Los Angeles, California.<h2>The influencer parties started in July</h2>There's a group of influencers who seemingly can't stop attending parties. It doesn't matter how much criticism they receive from their fans, fellow celebrities, or <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2019/05/how-tea-channels-feed-youtube-feuds/589618/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the tea channels</a> that meticulously catalog bad influencer behavior — it seems that gathering together trumps social distancing for some.After a few weeks of apparently sticking to the rules (at least according to social media), the parties started with <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-controversies-timeline-looting-scandals-racist-slurs-drama-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">known controversy-seeker</a> Jake Paul inviting dozens of internet stars <a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-party-video-calabasas-mayor-covid-19-bryce-hall-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to his Calabasas mansion on July 14</a>, where they gathered without face masks, drank, and swung from heavy machinery. A few days later on July 21, <a href="https://www.insider.com/party-hype-house-larray-birthday-la-james-charles-tana-influencer-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">67 maskless influencers attended a Birthday party for TikToker Larray</a> at the Hype House, a home where some of the app's A-listers dwell.Tana Mongeau, a YouTuber who attended both events, <a href="https://twitter.com/defnoodles/status/1287414780420952064?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted an Instagram story</a> the following week with fellow influencer Erika Costell, where they told the camera "we don't f---ing care." Both stars have millions of online followers. Despite later saying the comment referred to historic bad blood between the women (both have dated Paul), Mongeau's words, and her subsequent perpetual cycle of partying, apologizing, and then doing it all over again, set the tone for how some influencers would continue to behave.The next month, for example, <a href="https://www.insider.com/bryce-hall-sway-house-birthday-party-lapd-tiktok-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bryce Hall crammed over 100 guests</a> into his own TikToker mansion called the Sway House, which resulted in LA's mayor <a href="https://www.insider.com/bryce-hall-power-shut-off-sway-house-party-blake-gray-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shutting off their power</a>. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RrYN4bDrkU&amp;ab_channel=EntertainmentTonightight" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hall told Entertainment Tonight</a> he regretted throwing the party in an interview on October 1, but was then seen attending a maskless gathering with various influencers <a href="https://www.insider.com/bryce-hall-parties-days-after-claims-regrets-partying-during-pandemic-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a few days later</a>.<h2>The partying has continued despite criticism from across the internet</h2>YouTuber kodeerants, <a href="https://twitter.com/kodeerants/status/1333566180007751683" target="_blank" rel="noopener">who went viral this week</a> for directing a rage-induced rant at partying influencers, told Insider she felt like their actions oftentimes don't reflect their words."They apologize, not because they mean it, but only to get people to stop talking about them," she said. "If they truly were sorry they would stop going to social events and stay home like the rest of us."As well as being a YouTuber, kodeerants, who withholds her legal name online, is an essential worker at a major corporation. But seeing influencers openly disregard the pandemic and flout local rules and guidelines makes her feel like working hard and taking precautions in the field is pointless, she said."These influencers are responsible for being role models for their audiences and all they are doing is showing them that you can do anything you want and you don't have to care about other people," she said.<div type="image" title="Jake Paul party" height="795" width="1590" msid="79551571" hostid="261"></div>YouTuber Chris Klemens, who has over one million followers on the platform, has also called out influencers who aren't socially distancing despite <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-12-01/california-covid-19-cases-break-daily-record-again" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COVID-19</a> <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-11-29/california-breaks-record-covid-hospitalizations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hospitalizations</a> reaching record heights in California. He pleaded with his peers to stop risking other people's health for the sake of their Instagram stories in a video called "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRNnsfj5ZFA&amp;ab_channel=ChrisKlemensmens" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I'm Just Done</a>" in July. On November 19, he posted a video where he revealed he'd <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DpZ-Y4Tnj8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tested positive for the coronavirus</a> despite following the guidelines for months."It just doesn't feel fair at all," <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DpZ-Y4Tnj8&amp;ab_channel=ChrisKlemensmens" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he said through tears</a> of shock as he drove home from the test center. "I'm just so angry."The backlash against the selfish behavior of influencers also received traction from huge stars such as <a href="https://www.insider.com/billie-eilish-calls-out-influencers-partying-in-pandemic-video-2020-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Billie Eilish</a> and Ariana Grande."Did we really all need to go to f---ing Saddle Ranch that badly that we couldn't have waited for the deathly pandemic to pass?" <a href="https://www.insider.com/ariana-grande-calls-out-tiktokers-for-going-out-during-pandemic-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grande said on a podcast earlier in November, referencing a restaurant that's popular with LA influencers</a>. "We all needed that Instagram post that badly?"Apparently, some believe they do — Hype House cofounder Thomas Petrou essentially <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/06/style/influencer-parties-jake-paul-tana-mongeau-thomas-petrou-hype-house.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the New York Times' Taylor Lorenz</a> in August he and other influencers that were part of large content collectives planned to live as normal because "our jobs are to entertain people.""We live with groups of people, and we are all intertwined for work," he said. "We can't put our entire lives on hold for a year and not make any money."As<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-coronavirus-is-changing-influencer-marketing-creator-industry-2020-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> reported by Business Insider's Amanda Perelli, Dan Whateley, and Sydney Bradley</a>, there are plenty of influencers who are making money without hanging out in large groups. Some influencers have adjusted their jobs to find new revenue streams this year, such as focusing on partnerships with companies that provide products for indoor activities like baking and growing house plants. Others have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ways-youtube-instagram-influencers-can-make-money-without-ads-2020-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">turned to setting up subscription-based memberships</a> to provide content, or spent time making personalized messages for fans on Cameo.Regardless of money, others influencers have simply brushed off the severity of the pandemic. Jake Paul told<a href="https://www.insider.com/jake-paul-interview-party-coronavirus-calabasas-mayor-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Insider's Kat Tenbarge</a> in August that he didn't know if he would stop partying. <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/youtuber-jake-paul-believes-covid-is-a-hoaxand-i-am-fake-news" target="_blank" rel="noopener">He later told Marlow Stern at The Daily Beast</a> he believed <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> was "a hoax." On the night of his knock-out win against former NBA player Nate Robinson, Paul threw a massive party to celebrate, inviting his mom, brother Logan Paul, and ex-wife Mongeau, among others.<a href="https://www.tmz.com/2020/11/30/jake-paul-mansion-party-piss-off-calabasas-mayor-punishment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Calabasas Mayor Alicia Weintraub told TMZ</a> called the gathering a "slap in the face to Calabasas residents" and said it was "no doubt a super-spreader event just waiting to happen" and Paul "should be ashamed of himself for allowing it when so many are suffering from the virus."These influencers often try to excuse their penchant for partying by claiming to purchase expensive rapid tests for everyone beforehand. In a time where regular people are struggling to obtain free tests despite having symptoms, and many can't afford the luxury of private ones, this point of view has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-asymptomatic-celebrities-billionaires-get-coronavirus-tests-2020-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">come off as tone-deaf</a>.<h2>The excuses no longer seem sincere</h2>Internet commentators and fans alike are exhausted. As of November 30, Mongeau seems to have given up excusing her actions, saying on an Instagram story that the multiple influencers at a viewing party of Paul's boxing match were all "screaming, hugging, crying" with each other, and it made her "so emo.""Did she really just try and make her partying during a pandemic sound deep and meaningful?" <a href="https://twitter.com/TeaSpillYT/status/1333533440633876488" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted tea channel TeaSpill</a>.Mongeau, now 22, has been a controversial online figure since she started making YouTube videos at 16. Like many influencers, she knows her audience isn't going anywhere, because <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-some-celebrities-seem-bulletproof-to-being-canceled-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chaos and controversy were built into her brand from the beginning, from a staged marriage to flaunting her arrest record</a>. Even if she loses a few hundred thousand subscribers, she will have millions left, so why not film a music video with Lil Xan or hang out at the Team 10 mansion?As kodeerants pointed out, influencers have the financial means to stay home during the pandemic, "but choose not to.""I think influencers feel like they are untouchable," she said. "Their audiences make up excuses for them and defend them online even when they don't deserve it."She added that she doesn't think influencers will stop partying until they start losing their following."If they keep thinking they can get away with their toxic behavior then they will never stop doing it," she said.<h2>Influencers missed the memo of how the coronavirus spreads</h2>Continued partying by some influencers — most of whom are young and in good physical shape — is problematic because they aren't the only people who could be affected by their actions. They seem to have missed the memo that by gathering in large groups they are potentially putting countless people at risk. Symptomless people can spread the coronavirus, and tests are not 100% accurate.The problem isn't contained to just the controversial influencers, either. Lele Pons, supposedly a family-friendly YouTuber, <a href="https://twitter.com/defnoodles/status/1323326087917568001" target="_blank" rel="noopener">held a massive Halloween party in Miami</a> which many celebrities including the Dolan twins and Diplo flew in for.
