Today, we are transforming a basement <keyword id="21378" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Floor">floor</keyword> into an epoxy river.</p><p>You can kinda see clearly that the floor has been prepped and shotblasted. And what that does is it just removes a lot of the imperfections, the impurities, so that you're down to something solid.</p><p>We're applying the base coat of our silver metallic epoxy. And we always start on the perimeter or the edge of the project. And on this particular project, we're working backwards, so we're just going to do one wall and work all the way across the floor.</p><p>After we apply a couple batches of this base coat, we're drizzling our black metallic epoxy over the top of it. Now, what this does is it adds kind of an accent color within that silver. We're wearing metal baseball cleats so that we can be elevated above the metallic epoxy and we don't slip around.</p><p>We're adding black by itself along the edge of that silver using a watering can. Now we're grabbing what's called a pool trowel, and we're just slowly blending just the edge. Now we're adding gold right after that and turquoise right after that. We add gold again. And then black again. We're bending over, being very careful to make sure that we don't blend the colors too much.</p><p>We're just getting rid of that hard line because we want this whole floor to look fairly natural. We want everything to flow together and just marbleize.</p><p>Now that the vein is finished, we're just continuing the process again, just like on the other side of the vein. So we're laying the base coat of silver and drizzling black highlights and swirling again.</p><p>We like to go back and spray denatured alcohol on the floor, and what that does is it just helps it level out very nicely. It helps it have that real glass-smooth finish that everyone loves.</p>

So in 2020, after accepting a remote job offer, I moved to rural North Devon for a better work-life balance. It was then that I found myself scrolling through TikTok. </p><p>In October 2020, alongside sea shanties and dance challenges, I spotted a video of someone making resin <keyword id="11931454" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="art" source="Orion">art</keyword> and it stopped me in my tracks.</p><p>Resin art videos have <a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktok-resin-art-backlash-environment-safety-criticism-2021-11">become a huge trend on TikTok</a>. They show people combining liquid epoxy resin with color pigments to produce unique patterns and textures, which when dried, form a durable plastic.</p><p>The finished pieces reminded me of the colors that I had seen on my travels at seascapes around the world. I was in awe of the videos of people pouring and mixing colors together — I began consuming so much resin art content that I'd often lay in bed thinking about it at night. </p><p>Less than a month later I ordered a beginner's resin kit to get started. I never imagined it would turn into a lucrative side hustle.</p><h2><strong>Creating resin art was harder than it looked on TikTok</strong></h2><p>Growing up, my artist grandmother taught me to paint, and I've always enjoyed getting creative and making things with my hands. The resin art videos on TikTok inspired me to rekindle the childhood creativity that I had lost while working in London.</p><p>But it's more complicated than it looks. </p><p>Resin is a heavy liquid that when applied can't be completely controlled. The colors can easily flow into one another and combine, so the final product can sometimes end up looking different to how you had planned. I learned this during my first attempt when I accidentally worked from a lopsided table. This left my canvas board at too much of an angle, so my design quickly slid into a puddle on the floor. </p><p>It was in those tougher moments that I remembered my artist grandmother, and our cherished moments spent painting together. Resin art was a way for me to honor her. I persevered for the need to reignite my creativity. </p><h2><strong>My new hobby became more expensive than I'd imagined</strong></h2><p>On average, epoxy resin costs 50 cents per ounce. Initially, this doesn't sound like a lot, but most resin art pieces require a large amount of resin. I generally use one mixed gallon (consisting of half-resin and half-hardener), to cover 12 square feet at a thickness of an eighth of an inch.</p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/tiktok-resin-art-backlash-environment-safety-criticism-2021-11">Environmental concerns</a> further drove up the price. I am passionate about the reduction of single-use plastic, so I use the highest-grade non-toxic resin. There's also the need for safety equipment to protect you from toxins, including protective clothing, a respirator mask, and nitrile gloves, as well as additional tools needed to form and shape the resin, including molds, color pigments, and decorations. </p><p>As I continued to develop my craft and spend more money, I quickly realized that I couldn't afford to sustain my new hobby. </p><div type="image" title="Jessie Hutter" height="6240" width="4160" msid="90083085" hostid="261"></div><h2>Since I began selling my art, it's evolved into a huge part of my life</h2><p>After I first posted a picture of my work <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CIOR671HvKUHCTuYA6_rhfgJMKMOk08pnBloWk0/">on Instagram</a> in November 2020, friends began commissioning me for resin art. I started making my first batch to be sold to the public and developed a resin art <a href="https://www.instagram.com/resinj.art/">Instagram</a> and <a href="https://www.jessiehutterart.com/">website</a>. </p><p>After uploading the first batch, I quickly sold out. Then the same happened with the second batch — and the third. Within a year, I had made over $2,600 in website sales. By November 2021, I even had my first pop-up display at a local cafe in Devon, all while working a full-time job.</p><p>In December 2021, my resin art Instagram account received a direct message from a gallery curator with an invitation to show my work at an abstract art exhibition. I instinctively wanted to turn the offer down, thinking that I wasn't good enough. Two years ago I stumbled upon TikTok's resin art trend. Now I'm selling my pieces and exhibiting in galleries.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> user Melissa Mondragon shared a video showing how she transformed her granite kitchen countertops with a realistic faux-marble look for under $200 and in four days. </li><li>Some loved how it turned out, but others said it was "like putting carpet over real hardwood floors."</li><li>Insider spoke with interior <keyword id="6373314" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Design">design</keyword> and <keyword id="6363870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="home">home</keyword> <keyword id="179834" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Organization">organization</keyword> experts who said it would take serious <keyword id="133641" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="DIY">DIY</keyword> and art skills to replicate the success of this DIY hack.</li></ul><p>A TikTok user wowed viewers with a video that showed how she transformed her granite kitchen countertop into a very realistic looking "marble" one with a <a href="https://gianigranite.com/products/giani-marble-countertop-paint-kit?variant=14928295985198">$180 DIY kit</a>.</p><p>But her followers and some interior design and home organization experts are skeptical of this hack, and how well people could actually re-create it.</p><p>"I would think you'd need some serious art skills to really pull [a DIY marble countertop] off well. From some of the photos I've seen, most do not," Iantha Carley, an interior designer and owner of <a href="https://ianthainteriors.com/">Iantha Carley Interiors</a>, told Insider.</p><p><a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@no2pencilblog/video/6904512344345382149?lang=en">The video shows</a> Melissa Mondragon and her husband covering their kitchen's granite countertops with white paint before painting marble "veins" and covering it all with a coat of epoxy, with the popular TikTok voiceover "nobody's gonna know" in the background of the clip.</p><p>Mondragon's video has over 36 million views and almost 20,000 comments at the time of writing. </p><blockquote class="tiktok-embed" cite="https://www.tiktok.com/@no2pencilblog/video/6904512344345382149" data-video-id="6904512344345382149" style="max-width: 605px;min-width: 325px;"> <section> <a target="_blank" title="@no2pencilblog" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@no2pencilblog">@no2pencilblog</a> <p>Updated countertops for less than $200 </p> <a target="_blank" title="♬ how would they know bad girls club - Chris Gleason" href="https://www.tiktok.com/music/how-would-they-know-bad-girls-club-6807984440287955717">♬ how would they know bad girls club - Chris Gleason</a> </section> </blockquote> <p>But her TikTok followers had a mixed reaction to the finished product. Some were impressed and one person asked Mondragon and her husband to "do [their] house now." A few others didn't like it, though, defending the aesthetic value of the original granite.</p><p>"Painting granite should be a crime," one of the top-liked comments reads.</p><p>"This is like putting carpet over real hardwood floors," another said.</p><p>Responding to some of the negative feedback, Mondragon told Insider, "Some people, I'm sure, like it, some people don't like it. That's fine. I don't mind negative comments at all because the more people comment on the video, the more interaction there is, the farther it goes."</p><p>Mondragon, who is a food blogger, said part of why she gave her countertops a makeover was because she needed something that "looked clean," and as a photographer, she values "a neutral, clean-looking space."</p><p>Melissa Maker of <a href="https://cleanmyspace.com/">Clean My Space</a> told Insider that while she agrees it's "sacrilegious" to put paint on granite and she understands the outrage, replacing granite countertops with marble can be very expensive and she thinks Mondragon's hack is a good option "for someone looking to refresh a space in their home without buying new countertops."</p><h2>It took Mondragon and her husband four days to paint the faux-marble countertop</h2><p>Mondragon told Insider that she and her family moved into their current home about six months ago. The house came with the granite countertop, a feature she wasn't particularly fond of.</p><p>So, she decided to give the kitchen counter a makeover ahead of the more extensive renovation her family is planning to undertake this year.</p><p>She and her husband started by doing a deep clean of the surface before applying a primer for "shiny, smooth surfaces" to avoid any potential chipping. The following day, they applied the base coat of paint.</p><p>Mondragon said that they allowed four hours of drying time between each coat.</p><div type="image" title="marble" height="1458" width="806" msid="80189769" hostid="261"></div><p>The next step might have been the most artistic part of the whole process - painting dark veins that made their project truly marble-like. The last step was applying the epoxy.</p><p><a href="https://dalchem.com.au/how-to/what-is-epoxy-resin-used-for#:~:text=Epoxy%20resin%20is%20known%20for,a%20strong%20hold%20under%20pressure.">Epoxy resin</a> is a strong, durable substance that provides protection against heat and chemicals, which is pretty essential for a countertop.</p><p>The whole process took Mondragon and her husband four days. She told Insider that the hardest part was "the pressure of painting the veins on to get them to look in an aesthetically-pleasing way" but that they were happy with how it turned out.</p><div type="image" title="marble" height="1436" width="796" msid="80189770" hostid="261"></div><p>"The whole process is easier than I thought it would be and then the end results, we thought, looked really professional in person," she said.</p><p>A spokesperson for Giani, the company that produces the kit Mondragon used, told Insider that their product is "completely inert and safe for food contact" once it cures all the way, which takes about a week. </p><h2>A home organizational expert told Insider this DIY project is 'a good in-between option'</h2><p>"This is a project fit for an experienced and confident DIYer," Maker said, echoing Carley's point that it would take advanced art skills to pull it off.</p><p>"It would be really important to prepare and prime the surface properly, use the correct type of paint, and to seal it properly," she continued.</p><p>She added that "it's something that is a good in-between option for someone who is looking to refresh their space but doesn't yet have the budget to replace countertops."</p><p>That said, Maker thinks this is a hack best reserved for lesser-used areas than a kitchen counter.</p><p>"If the area someone wants to refresh is a cabinet countertop or fireplace surround that doesn't get a lot of heavy use, I'd say give it a try," she told Insider. "In a kitchen or bath, I'd really recommend saving until you can get a proper replacement."</p><p>"A DIY project such as this appears to come with a false sense of savings," she added. "If you factor in your time, it's probably best to leave it to the professionals."  </p><p>Mondragon, however, isn't letting the negative TikTok comment deters her. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6363870" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="home">Home</keyword> inspector <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@bryanstandley">Bryan Standley</a> has become TikTok-famous for roasting <keyword id="10675732" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="flipped-houses">flipped houses</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="525760" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="homeowners">Homeowners</keyword> should look closely at their dishwasher when inspecting a kitchen, Standley told Insider.</li><li>If the dishwashed isn't installed properly, it could get costly and lead to drainage issues.</li></ul><p>Home inspector <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@bryanstandley?referer_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.insider.com%2F&amp;referer_video_id=69122395263625986628662">Bryan Standley</a> has become a TikTok sensation for exposing the different ways that house flippers can cut corners to save time and money.</p><p>Based in Kansas City, Missouri, Standley, 35, has inspected thousands of homes over the course of his career and joined TikTok in January 2020 to share his tips and experiences. </p><p>When it comes to kitchens, improperly installed dishwashers are the biggest hidden problem Standley encounters. He spoke to Insider about how dishwashers can turn a home into a money sink down the road and shared his tips for how to identify installation issues.</p><h2>Poorly installed dishwashers at best require additional servicing and at worst can damage a kitchen</h2><p>Typically, dishwashers are the last element of a kitchen to be finalized, according to Standley, and might be overlooked if a renovator is trying to save time or simply doesn't know what they're doing.</p><p>"The flooring, cabinets, countertops, and plumbing all have to be in place before the dishwasher can be installed," he said. </p><p>If a dishwasher is simply not installed, the home buyer would need to make a service call to the plumber, which could cost around $200 depending on their location, Standley told Insider.</p><p>If it is installed, but incorrectly, that could lead to more costly issues.</p><p>In one video, Standley explains how dishwashers are often connected to the garbage disposal without removing the <a href="https://www.hunker.com/12273173/how-to-remove-the-knockout-plug-in-a-garbage-disposal">knockout plug</a>, an essential step that prevents drainage issues.</p><p>"When it goes to drain, it just pops the hose off because it's deadheading against the plug, and it makes a huge mess all over the newly refinished hardwood floors," he said.</p><blockquote class="tiktok-embed" cite="https://www.tiktok.com/@bryanstandley/video/6880947463314836742" data-video-id="6880947463314836742" style="max-width: 605px;min-width: 325px;"> <section> <a target="_blank" title="@bryanstandley" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@bryanstandley">@bryanstandley</a> <p>Reply to @myemail36  stuff leaks. "In that case, just pressing the button and running it could cause damage to the floors and cabinets. When the drain pump kicks on to drain the dishwasher, all of that water will be sprayed out under your cabinets and seep under the flooring."</p><p><a href="https://www.homeadvisor.com/cost/flooring/repair-flooring/">According to HomeAdvisor</a>, repairing floors damaged by flooding can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a few boards to $20,000 if the damage is extensive enough.</p><h2>Standley follows 4 steps to determine if a dishwasher has been installed properly</h2><p>Standley's first step when evaluating a dishwasher is to look inside. If you see paperwork on one of the racks, that's a bad sign, according to the home inspector. "That tells me whoever installed it didn't test it," he said.</p><p>After looking inside, Standley recommends scanning the outside of the dishwasher and looking for mounting screws that keep a dishwasher from falling forward out of a cabinet. Namely, the fight is about whether or not 24-year-old Olympios is mature enough to "marry a 36-year-old man." (The <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/nick-viall-age-bachelor-2016-12">average age of the women</a>, in case you're curious, is 26).</p><p>"Listen, I'm not an idiot, I run a multi-million dollar company, and I'm not an idiot," Corinne said. "So stop treating me like an idiot, Taylor."</p><p> </p><p>The previews for next week look intense - will Corinne or Taylor be sent home? But honestly, the bigger mystery is what Olympios's "business owner" job actually is.</p><p><span>As she explained in her "Bachelor" intro, Olympios helps run her family's online multimillion dollar business. <a href="http://www.glamour.com/story/the-bachelor-corinne-olympios-on-nick-viall"><span>She told Glamour</span></a> that the business involves "doing epoxy floorings and roof coatings."</span></p><p><span>After a little online research, it appears her family business could be <a href="http://www.armorgarage.com/"><span>a company called ArmorGarage Inc.</span></a>, a company owned by a James Olympios in the Miami area that supplies "high performance premium grade epoxy coatings and floor products." </span></p><p>ArmorGargage Inc. reportedly has big clients, including "<span>the US Military, multiple Fortune 500 companies, and the US Coast Guard," <a href="http://www.wetpaint.com/bachelor-2017-corinne-olympios-business-1552018/">according to Wet Paint</a>. If true, those are major clients, so it would make sense that the business is pretty huge. My heart is gold, but my vagine is platinum," Corinne says in the promo for the rest of the season.</span></p><p><span>Whether or not she will have sex with Nick, the 24-year-old seems very confident in herself and will most definitely face even more backlash from the women as the season wears on.</span></p><h3><span>7.
