"The radar-guided Phalanx close-in weapons system, for example, has been in use for decades by the navies of the US and other countries."The M61 is carried by jet fighters like the F-16 Fighting Falcon and the F/A-18 Hornet that can fire the 20mm rounds at targets up to nearly two miles away. It has the power and rate of fire to destroy incoming drones, but its cost-effectiveness turns on how many rounds it must shoot to do so."The longer the burst, the higher the cost per interception due to the use of more rounds," Borsari said, noting it costs $180,000 to fire the M61 for one minute, during which time it can fire 6,000 rounds."Furthermore, engaging faster drones could be difficult," Borsari said. "There are now short-range ground-launched missiles and guided rockets meant for C-UAS that cost around $40,000 each, along with reusable ones equipped with a high-power microwave payload (Coyote Block-3) to defeat swarms at short range.""So, in general, the M61 can be a solution, but it's not the only one."Israel previously <a target="_blank" href="https://www.twz.com/all-the-layers-of-israels-vaunted-integrated-air-defense-system">integrated M168 Vulcan cannons and FIM-92 Stinger missiles</a> on its Machbet short-range air defense system, which it developed in the 1990s based on the American M113 armored personnel carrier to defend infantry from air attack. Its present evaluation of the M61 may be the first step to developing something similar to deal with low-flying drones.Interestingly, an unmanned Israeli M113 was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jpost.com/israel-hamas-war/article-804074">reportedly sighted</a> in southern Gaza in recent days.Borsari believes the M113 is one type of vehicle that can be "repurposed" as an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) to defeat drones."Soon, UGVs will certainly be used in the C-UAS configuration and be progressively integrated into maneuver formations, although they won't necessarily be the standard mobile air defense capability," Borsari said."Rather, they will be part of a diverse and layered set of capabilities for C-UAS attached to ground formations, some crewed, some uncrewed, and equipped with different effectors — both kinetic and non-kinetic — including heavy automatic guns, short-range missiles, directed energy like high-power microwave, and electronic warfare."

Thomas declined to discuss the details of Sorokin's asylum application with Insider, saying she wasn't authorized to speak about them.Thomas also asked that Sorokin be released from custody until her immigration status is finalized, but the Justice Department's Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) didn't schedule one for months.Paul O'Dwyer, a <a href="https://www.paulodwyerlaw.com/paul-o-dwyer.html">New York-based immigration attorney</a>, told Insider that while it's possible Sorokin could be released from jail while an immigration judge determines whether she deserves asylum, it's unlikely."There's a discretionary component to asylum applications, meaning that even if she was eligible for it, the judge still has discretion to deny it on the basis that she doesn't have good moral character, or that she has a history of bad acts, which make her undesirable," O'Dwyer said.<h2>Immigration authorities use snail mail, which slows the process</h2>Thomas filed a "writ of habeas corpus" lawsuit in August against the Department of Homeland Security, arguing Sorokin should have a bond hearing. On September 27, US District Judge Jesse Furman <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21085281-anna-sorokin-ice-doj-stipulation">ordered the EOIR to hold a hearing for Sorokin</a> "at which ICE bears the burden of establishing, by clear and convincing evidence, that she poses a danger to the community or a flight risk."An EOIR judge held that bond hearing on October 7. Thomas told Insider the court never emailed her about the hearing, and that she'd only been notified about it by physical mail two days afterward, on October 9.<div type="image" title="new york varick immigration court" height="1625" width="2166" msid="87116129" hostid="261"></div>Thomas said she was able to attend the hearing only because Sorokin told her about it in a phone call shortly before it began. The lawyer told Insider she participated in the hearing over the phone while hospitalized because of a health issue.At the hearing, the immigration judge ruled that Sorokin should continue to be detained. Thomas said the court has ignored her requests to email her the ruling, and is once again sending it to her by snail mail. But without a written copy, Thomas said, she can't appeal the ruling back to a federal judge."I asked him to email me the notice immediately so I can immediately run back to federal court. They refuse to email it to me," Thomas said. "And to this day, I still haven't gotten to any decision in the mail. So there's nothing I can do because you can't appeal."Representatives for ICE directed Insider to EOIR for comment. A representative for EOIR said Insider needed to file a Freedom of Information Act request in order to see the immigration judge's order; Insider's FOIA request remains pending.

But the Trump administration - and, namely, the Executive Office for Immigration Review, which oversees the United States' 68 immigration courts - is thus far resisting demands to shutter the courtrooms."The scientific evidence-based opinion of public health experts can only lead to one conclusion," said Judge Ashley Tabaddor, president of the National Association of Immigration Judges, "and that is to immediately and temporarily close all the immigration courts nationwide."In a press call on Tuesday, the group that represents the nation's immigration judges was joined by public health experts and the union that represents employees of Immigration and Customs Enforcement - a rare display of unity - in making that call for an emergency closure of the courts. "I'm obviously not an expert in immigration law," Dr. Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute said, "but what is very clear from a public health perspective is that any gathering of five or more people, I believe, puts people at substantial risk of further transmission of the disease." Without such extreme social distancing, tens if not hundreds of thousands of Americans will likely die in the coming months, Jha noted, adding that most experts believe there are probably 30,000 to 60,000 infected people already. Extreme social distancing is necessary just "to have a shot at dealing with the outbreak."According to Johns Hopkins University, there were nearly <a href="https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html">6,500 confirmed cases</a> of COVID-19 in the US, as of Tuesday night, and at least 114 dead."Our primary concern here today is the Department of Justice's refusal to either close or postpone immigration court in-person hearings during this global health crisis," said Fanny Behar-Ostrow, president of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 511, which represents workers at Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "Like most government employees, ICE attorneys are concerned about the risk to their health and the health of their families," she said. The Trump administration has itself issued guidance discouraging gatherings of 10 or more people and recommended keeping a distance of six feet from one another. "None of this is possible if the immigration courts remain open," Behar-Ostrow said.Behar-Ostrow added that, as she was on the press call, she received an email informing her that, in Atlanta, "an attorney who was diagnosed with COVID-19 was apparently in court yesterday," and that a judge in Colorado is out with what appears to be the same virus. "Every court, everyone, is basically in panic mode."As of Tuesday, only a single immigration court, in Seattle, had been closed, reflecting what Trump administration critics believe is a desire to maintain appearances and a focus on the president's signature issue: restricting immigration. In an interview, she described conditions in clear violation of the federal government's own guidance."The judge was triple-booked, and so we actually sat there for two and a half hours, listened to another trial, and then the judge dismissed us to reschedule. So we were there for nothing," Klinke told Business Insider. There were "probably about 10 people in the courtroom, but of course we had to deal with security and those lines can be pretty long, about 15 people deep," she said."There's no hand sanitizer out for public use and people are there, you know, for a court hearing; regardless of what their health might be, they were going to be there," she continued.There are also the confines of an elevator to deal with - in Atlanta, the immigration court is on the 26th floor - and a waiting room where "there were probably 30 people in a small room," Klinke said."We weren't crammed in like sardines," she continued, "but we were definitely cozy." And definitely not six feet apart.The global pandemic has put immigrant rights advocates in an unusual position: agreeing with ICE."This has been a real struggle," Denise Bell, a researcher focusing on refugee and migrant rights at Amnesty International, told Business Insider. "None of us anticipated being here because what we've always asked for is more funding; more judges; more resources; more lawyers to help people pursuing their claims," said Bell, who previously worked as an attorney advisor on the New York immigration court. "Yet we're in a public health crisis and pursuing that claim could endanger that person and everyone around them. And we have to be mindful. Immigration judges, ICE attorneys, and experts are calling on the Trump administration to close the courts to stop the novel coronavirus from spreading

The US state department on Monday made a "determination approving a possible foreign military sale to India". The <keyword id="515876" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-Defence-Security-Cooperation-Agency">US Defence Security Cooperation Agency</keyword> had informed the US Congress about the decision to sale the defence weapon system on February 7. The proposed sale of the <keyword id="46638" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="equipment">equipment</keyword> and support system will not alter the basic military balance in the region, the US government said in the context of neighbouring enemy countries. It stated: "India has requested to buy an <keyword id="8759763" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="integrated-air-defense">Integrated Air Defense</keyword> Weapon System (IADWS) comprising five components which are AN/MPQ-64Fl Sentinel radar systems; 118 AMRAAM AIM-120C-7/C-8 missiles; 3 AMRAAM Guidance Sections; 4 AMRAAM Control Sections; and 134 Stinger FIM-92L missiles." The US stated that India had requested to include 32 M4A1 rifles; 40,320 M855 5.56 mm cartridges; Fire Distribution Centers (FDC) and Handheld Remote Terminals. The deal also includes Electrical Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensor systems; AMRAAM Non-Developmental Item-Airborne Instrumentation Units (NDIAAIU); Multi-spectral Targeting System-Model A (MTS-A); Canister Launchers (CN); High Mobility Launchers (HML) and Dual Mount Stinger (DMS) Air Defence Systems. The US will also sell Vehicle Mounted Stinger Rapid Ranger Air Defence Systems; communications equipment; tool kits; test equipment; range and test programmes; support equipment; prime movers; generators; technical documentation; computer based training equipment; training equipment; training towers; ammunition storage; training and maintenance facilities; infrastructure improvements; US government and contractor technical support, engineering and logistics support services; warranty services; Systems and Integration Checkout (SICO); field office support and other related elements of logistics and programme support. The total estimated cost is $1.867 billion. "This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the US by helping to strengthen the US-India strategic relationship and to improve the security of a major defensive partner, which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region," the US government stated. India intends to use these defence articles and services to modernise its armed forces, and to expand its existing air defence architecture to counter threats posed by air attacks. This will contribute to India's military goal to update its capability while further enhancing greater interoperability between India and the US. Around 60 US government or contractor representatives will travel to India for a period of six weeks wherein they will be involved in activities that include de-processing, fielding, training and technical and logistics support.

Children can be heard coughing and crying throughout the night, she and other mothers told Reuters during a recent visit.When one gets sick, they all do, Aguilar said. Mexican officials did not respond to requests for comment on the conditions in migrant shelters.Reuters was unable to corroborate the diagnoses of the Suniga and Aguilar children. Doctors and nurses visiting shelters and camps in Mexican border towns, however, told Reuters they have seen cases of chicken pox, scabies, respiratory infections, skin rashes, eye infections and gastrointestinal issues among children and adults.Children under 5, and especially under the age of 2, are at high risk of serious flu complications, according to the US Centers for Disease Control, and the flu season is about to start.American doctors and nurses volunteering in Tijuana with the Refugee Health Alliance hope to be able to provide flu shots in a few of the shelters there, but the effort is hard to organize, said coordinator Phil Canete. But advocates say it's not clear what qualifies as a medical exemption from MPP.Jennifer Jimenez, a 30-year-old Salvadoran, said she arrived at the border in July with 11-year-old twins and her eight-month-old son Jacob, who was born with lungs that had not fully developed.Although she explained Jacob's condition to border agents, she said, the agents sent her and her children back to Ciudad Juarez, where the family ended up sleeping on the floor of a crowded shelter.Reuters found that 1% of migrants assigned to MPP have so far been transferred out of the program.The US government has signed a series of bilateral deals with the governments of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador to push more people to seek asylum closer to home. In May, nearly 85,000 family units - parents with kids - were arrested at the US-Mexico border, a monthly record. In August, the number of families arrested dropped by 70% after the administration ramped up MPP and other measures to deter migration.President Donald Trump has said that lax US asylum laws encourage people to show up at the border with their children. Before MPP, it was common practice to release arriving families into the United States to wait out their US court hearings - something Trump and others said allowed many migrants to disappear into the country to live illegally.Back in August, the Trump administration <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-administration-could-indefinitely-detain-migrant-children-2019-8">tried rolling out a new rule</a> that would have opened the door to the indefinite detention of migrant children and end the two decades-old Flores Agreement that protects underage migrant kids after they arrive to the United States. But a federal judge <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/27/us/migrant-children-flores-court.html">blocked the rule</a> from going into effect late last month, characterizing elements of it as "Kafkaesque." Immigrant advocacy groups say most released immigrants show up for their court hearings. Some are suing to halt the MPP policy, and a federal appeals court - the 9th US Circuit - is due to rule on the case soon.<h2>'Nothing for them here'</h2>According to the Reuters analysis, thousands of children are awaiting court hearings in border towns where the risk of kidnappings, rapes and assaults is high.About 5,600 children in the MPP program had their cases assigned to San Diego immigration court, north of Tijuana. People lacked access to fresh water and proper restrooms and were bathing in the Rio Grande river, she said..One baby Perry examined had a chronic eye infection and was beginning to develop scarring, threatening his vision. Another had a fungal rash under his arm so severe it limited his movement.Perry said she saw breastfeeding mothers so dehydrated that they could not nurse their babies and parents chewing up donated pizza into mush to feed their infants. The automotive industry was <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/1997/03/31/business/computers-turn-design-on-its-prototypical-ear.html?pagewanted=all&amp;src=pm">one of the earliest adapters</a> of 3-D printing to produce parts.
But we could soon start seeing whole cars (or at least their bodies) printed. That's the business model for <a href="http://korecologic.com/">Urbee</a> ("urban electric"), a startup auto company that wants to make the greenest car on earth. Stratsys, one of Credit Suisse's top stocks for investing in 3-D printing, <a href="http://korecologic.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/2013-03-06-redeye-on-demand-kor-ecologic-collaborate-for-urbee-2-car.pdf">just signed on as Urbee's sponsor for digital printing.</a>
<h2>Defense</h2>
A company called <a href="http://www.eoir.com/">EOIR Technologies</a> developed a way to mass produce camera gun sights for M1 Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles using 3-D printing.
Accroding to CSC, that cut the cost of manufacturing the gear by 60%. 
The Air Force is also in the initial stages of pumping out components of otherwise highly sensitive and expensive systems, like drones, in order to use them in training exercises.

<h2>Medicine</h2>
Pick almost any simple soft-tissue organ - ears, fingers, even kidneys - and it's already being printed on a 3-D machine. So are 90% of all hearing aids, as well as an increasing number of dental equipment and hip and knee replacements, according to Credit Suisse.

<h2>Airplanes</h2>
Boeing now uses 3-D printers <a href="http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/industries/manufacturing/story/2012-07-10/digital-manufacturing/56135298/1">to create 300 different parts</a> for its products.
For instance, according to CSC, Boeing's environmental control ducting (<a href="http://www.aircrafttech.com/services/env-control-system-ducting">basically specialized tubes</a>) used to have to be assembled from 20 small parts; now it's pumped out as a single piece.
This reduces inventory and maintenace costs, and also lowers fuel costs since the part is lighter. Some aerospace manufacturers are also deploying on-site printers for certain parts, reducing shipping costs.
<h2>Brick and mortar <keyword id="6354851" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Retail">retail</keyword></h2>
If some storefront retailers are on the brink, 3-D printing may push them over the edge.
Thanks to at-home printers - <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/08/3d-printing-goes-mainstream-retail/278862/">as well as places like UPS that have begun setting up printers at their stores</a> - you may soon be able to print pretty much any relatively simple consumer good that would fit on your desktop.

CSC has a great, illustrative story of how at-home 3-D printing could accelerate the decline of storefronts:
"Recently, one of our researchers faced the prospect of a 14-hour flight holding an ebook reader, with no time to buy a reader stand before leaving for the flight. After a few minutes searching on <a href="http://www.thingiverse.com/">Thingiverse.com</a> [a site offering 3-D printing files], he was able to download a foldable stand design, print it in 45 minutes, and use it on the flight that night."
