The central government today set up a committee to review different <keyword id="498585" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="environment-laws">environment laws</keyword> so that they could be brought in line with the "current requirements." The committee, which consists of four members, will be headed by former cabinet secretary TSR Subramanian. It has been asked to review five crucial environment laws concerning conservation of environment, forest, wildlife, water and air among others. 
 
The government has been looking to speed up the environmental clearances to propel economic growth. The Environment Ministry has asked the committee to submit its report in two months. 
 
The ministry’s order said, "Based on experience gained in the implementation of aforesaid Acts, it has been decided to constitute a high-level committee to review these Acts and suggest appropriate amendments to bring them in line with their objectives." 
 
The laws to be reviewed include Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. 
 
"The panel has been asked to recommend specific amendments needed so as to bring them in line with current requirements. It has also been asked to draft proposed amendments in each of the aforesaid Acts to give effect to the proposed recommendations," the ministry order said.

World Environment Day: Brands urge consumers to come out of the lockdown as conscious beings and continue following sustainable practices

Former dacoits, whose hideouts were forests where they also set up many houses, have now taken up a noble cause. 
 
These self confessed ‘baghis’, who laid down their arms years back, will now converge in Jaipur to give a lesson on saving environment and the forests. 
 
Seema Parihar, Gabbar Singh, Mohar Singh, Saru Singh, Malkhan Singh, Renu Yadav and Sarla Yadav, who once made headlines for their gunshots will gather in the pink city in mid-July to take part in a 'mahakumbh' of former dacoits and their families. 
 
The 'mahakumbh' will be named 'Pehle basaya bihad - Ab bachayainge bihad' (Once we lived in forests - Now we will save forests).These dacoits, who had given a slip to the police many times in the 1970s and 1980s in the border areas of MP, Rajasthan and UP, now lead a normal life. 
 
“I went to Muraina, Bhind, Jhansi, Auraiya and other places in MP, UP and some places in Rajasthan to find these dacoits who once ruled the ravines of Chambal," Vishnu Lamba, an environment activist, told Times of India. "I met at least 22 dacoits till date and seven of them have already given their consent to take part in the programme. They include Seema Parihar, Malkhan Singh and Mohar Singh," Lamba of Shree Kalpatru Sansthan added. 
 
He told the news daily that the dacoits who will take part in the 'mahakumbh' are those who took up arms for a 'cause' and not for their own benefits. The programme is being organized with an aim to spread environmental awareness. Many of these dacoits have become social workers after they surrendered to the police. Some of them have also joined politics. 
 
The dacoits will also narrate their own stories along with spreading the message of environment conservation.

Union Environment Minister Anil Dave passes away

That's the conclusion Richard B. Mckenzie, a professor of Economics at the Paul Merage School of Business comes to in <a href="http://www.econlib.org/library/Columns/y2013/McKenziewalking.html">his blog post on EconLib.</a>
Because of the way <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> supply chains work, walking a mile - and consequently expending calories that need to be replaced - might actually be more wasteful and polluting than driving a mile.
<a href="http://www.econlib.org/library/Columns/y2013/McKenziewalking.html"></a>He takes the example of a 180 pound man who chooses to walk a mile to work instead of driving. Walking a mile will burn 200 calories more than the 2000 calories he burns just to survive. Producing food worth 200 calories takes up to 3000-4000 calories. So a person that drives a high fuel economy car that burns 40 miles per gallon will be using only a half to two-thirds of the <keyword id="6357014" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="energy">energy</keyword> than the walker uses in replacing the calories he expended on walks. 
The heavier you get, the less efficient walking is, as a heavier person would burn more calories from walking a mile. So walking can be 1.5 to 2 times more polluting than driving a high mileage car. 
The reason for this is the way the food supply chain in the US is structured. McKenzie provides a breakdown of how the farm sector uses energy: 
"Many categories of farm equipment-such as tractors, mowers, trucks, cars, balers, and combines-can be as gas-guzzling and polluting as the eighteen-wheelers on the nation's highways.
Farms use a lot of electricity-generated by distant and often coal-burning power plants-to run irrigation equipment and heating/cooling systems for cattle barns, pig or poultry pens, and animal waste disposal plants.
The nation's entire food industry-ranging from the production of fertilizer and pesticides to crops and livestock to food processing, packaging, and transportation and then on to food preparation by consumers-uses nearly a fifth of the fossil energy burned annually in the United States.
Field hands who actually pick crops hunched over rows need to eat extra-large energy-dense meals to replace the 5,000 (or more) calories they can burn daily, and the calories they down are also produced in energy-intensive ways.
A major input in agriculture is natural gas, and the cost of natural gas can be as much as 90 percent of the total production cost of fertilizers and pesticides."
In addition to these, harvesting beef not only uses more energy as the animals need to be fed, but it also produces polluting gases like methane from the cows themselves. Once the food is produced, its conversion to energy in humans is also pretty inefficient. The amount of energy food produces is only about 13.5% of the energy used in its production. That's less efficient than most cars.
Electric cars don't really solve the problem either. While they don't pollute by producing exhaust, most of the electricity in the US is obtained from coal, which puts out 6.5 ounces of carbon per mile, which is about half the emissions of gasoline-powered cars. 
But don't go out and buy yourself a new Hummer just yet. The less mileage your car has, the better walking looks in comparison. Also, if you're eating a mostly vegetarian diet, your energy consumption and <keyword id="13001" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="pollution">pollution</keyword> through food is minimized.

Walking May Be Worse For The Environment Than Driving

His environmental stances are no exception - he has suggested eliminating the EPA, pulling the US out of the Paris Agreement, and cutting all federal spending on clean energy. It's still unknown, of course, how many of these proposals Trump will act on as president, but environmental groups are already gearing up for a fight."Trump must choose whether he will be a President remembered for putting America and the world BACK on a path to climate disaster, or for listening to the American public, investing in the fastest-growing sector in the US economy - clean energy - and keeping us on a path to climate progress." Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, said in a statement on November 9.If he chooses the former option - to reverse the progress President Obama has made on energy and climate policy - here are the biggest threats the Trump administration poses to the future of the planet.1. Backing out of Paris AgreementThe historic agreement compels the 103 countries who ratified it to work together to keep the global temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius. The US has pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 26-28% below 2005 levels by 2025. Trump, however, has denounced the accord, and <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/nov/09/us-election-result-throws-paris-climate-deal-into-uncertainty" target="_blank">pledged to pull the US out of it</a>.Because it is already in effect, countries who wish to leave must undergo a process of three to four years to be formally removed from the agreement. But because the agreement doesn't stipulate any mechanisms of enforcement beyond transparency and regular progress reports, Trump could easily decide not to take the necessary actions to hit the US' goal.Kyle Ash, a senior legislative representative at environmental organization <a href="http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/" target="_blank">Greenpeace</a>, tells Business Insider that although ignoring the US' contribution to the Paris Agreement would have a negative impact on the country's relationships with other nations, Trump could decide to "just completely flout international law and global diplomacy."The hope, in that case, is that other countries don't then decide to ignore their own commitments because the US has given up its leadership on the issue.2. Killing the Clean Power PlanThe Clean Power Plan, Obama's national regulation to lowering carbon pollution from power plants, is currently being challenged in court. The fate of the plan is still unknown, and it has not been fully implemented because the Supreme Court voted to delay its rollout until the appeals process had been completed.While Trump has said <a href="http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/trump-would-repeal-clean-power-plan-other-big-epa-regs/article/2601931" target="_blank">he'll kill the plan</a> flat-out, Ken Berlin, the president and CEO of the <a href="https://www.climaterealityproject.org/" target="_blank">Climate Reality Project</a>, a climate organization founded by Al Gore, explains that it's not so easy to withdraw a regulation."He's got two choices," Berlin says. "One, he can continue to challenge it in court and switch the government's position, saying we now oppose it. If the rule goes into effect, then he's got to do either a new rule-making to change that, and that has to go through normal notice and comments and it can be challenged by the environmental community. Or he could go to Congress and try to get Congress to repeal the Clean Air Act or modify it in some way."3. Eliminating the EPATrump has suggested he might cut both the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency. This is an unlikely scenario, since the EPA is legally required to enforce existing environmental laws. Trump could theoretically change the EPA's function to be more of an advisory body, with less efforts being devoted to actual enforcement."The way that Trump can stop it is either by breaking the law, or by working with Congress to change the law, or by working with Congress to reduce the EPA budget to such an extent that they can't function," Ash explains. Appointing climate change deniers to lead the EPA and Department of EnergyIf Trump can't defund or eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency as he has promised, it seems likely that he will select people with records of support for fossil fuels and denial of global warming to chair both the EPA and the Department of Energy. Already, Trump selected Myron Ebell, who is known for questioning climate change and has said that Obama's ratification of the Paris Agreement was unconstitutional."If he's putting people in charge of the EPA - like Myron Ebell for instance - who basically think it's a complete waste of time and effort and resources to do anything about climate pollution, then in theory everything is under threat," Ash says. "They can't just legally stop doing it. They could in theory just choose not to do it and then be in violation of the federal law."The EPA would be within its bounds, however, to make the day-to-day decisions about issuing permits, pursuing a case, and determining which violators to go after. And the leader of the agency will certainly influence that.5. Cut all federal spending on clean energyTrump has <a href="http://www.bna.com/trump-says-plan-n57982082131/" target="_blank">vowed to cut</a> all federal government spending related to clean energy - an effort he's suggested could save $100 billion over eight years. Media sources have been unable to determine how the cuts would add up to that total, but Ash believes a lot of the government's investment in renewable energy comes in the form of tax incentives."It would be odd for them to basically require taxes to go up just because it's renewable energy," Ash says, since Trump campaigned on a platform of decreasing taxes for individuals and corporations.The US has, however, pledged to contribute money to an international fund that would help poorer countries reduce their carbon pollution, which was formalized by negotiators of the Paris Agreement. Avoid creating any regulations on methaneThe EPA has thus far failed to come out with a rule to regulate methane emissions - something that now seems overdue given the known climate consequences of the gas. Though CO2 emissions are no longer increasing at the rate they once were, Ash explains that Methane emissions are rising."The worry is just that a Trump EPA will just further postpone that," he says. But it's [a regulation] we need really badly because methane is so important for reducing the short term warming."7. Open federal lands to oil and gas drillingTrump has proposed to open federal lands up to more oil, gas and coal production."I think he will clearly go ahead and do that," Berlin says, though he says he's unsure whether fossil fuel companies will find it worthwhile to invest in exploring those lands as the price of renewable energy continues to drop. "In my view opening these lands up will just create a bunch of stranded assets eventually that the oil companies are going to have to take off their books."Kyle Ash points out, however, that the Obama administration has already opened federal land up for fossil fuel extraction."The 'Keep it in the ground' movement is basically where the coalition has decided to focus," he says. "In some degree it will be quite similar to the fight that we've engaged in for the last few years vis a vis the Obama administration."Although the worst case scenario for the environment is a dark one as far as climate action and environmental protection are concerned, both Ash and Berlin agree that Trump will have a much harder time actually repealing and revising the regulations than he likely understands. And clean energy initiatives and pollution regulations often win overwhelming favor among the American people, a fact that suggests there is still hope for the planet."I think today we should take Trump at his word that he's going to be president of the American people and try and do things that people support," Berlin says. When you think of hybrids, you think environmentally friendly, right? But Lamborghini is taking a different approach, using hybrid technology to boost performance without taking fuel efficiency into consideration. Which raises the question: Should automakers use hybrid systems to increase speed rather than reduce pollution?Hybrids have grown in popularity since they were first introduced 20 years ago. Now, almost every automaker offers a hybrid option, and most hybrids can double the gas mileage of a standard car. But Lamborghini's foray into electrification, the Sián FKP 37, doesn't save fuel. The Sián is a blend of the Terzo Millennio concept and the iconic Countach. Instead of fuel efficiency, Lamborghini is focusing on performance. And perform it does. It's the fastest Lamborghini ever, with a top speed of over 217 mph, and goes 0 to 62 in just under 2.8 seconds, just two-tenths of a second shy of Tesla's Model S. There's no doubt that Lamborghini saw what electric motors could do and wanted to try something different for itself. The Sián's engineering is ingenious. Instead of a battery pack, Lamborghini opted for a supercapacitor, which is lighter, fire-resistant, more powerful, and fully charges in a fraction of the time of a battery pack. The only downfall is the lack of range, which limits the Sián's fully electric drive mode to parking and reversing. But the supercapacitor is the secret to making it the fastest-accelerating Lamborghini ever, virtually eliminating lag between gear changes, providing instant torque via the electric motors, and fully recharging during the regenerative braking process to repeat its performance around the track. But Lamborghini's chief technology officer says the supercapacitor is not too hot for emissions.Meanwhile, Lamborghini's sister company, Porsche, produced the 918 Spyder, a super-hybrid that boasts a top speed of 211 mph and makes the 0-to-62 run quicker than the Sián, at 2.6 seconds. But even more impressively, it achieves a miles-per-gallon rating of 22, and a 67 mpg of gasoline equivalent while running on the hybrid drivetrain. And it came out in 2013. The Porsche accelerates faster, has a comparable top speed, and still manages to be more fuel-efficient than the Lamborghini Sián. The point is, you don't have to sacrifice efficiency for performance. So, are hybrids and electric cars the answer to our climate-change problems? Probably not. But they could have a big role to play. The EPA says that up to 75% of carbon monoxide emissions in US cities come from motor vehicles. So, yes, automakers do have a big role to play.There could be some positive steps in the company's future. Lamborghini states that they plan to use battery packs instead of supercapacitors in their next hybrid, which should produce better gas mileage. But the problem is, for right now, Lamborghini's one and only hybrid doesn't do much for fuel efficiency.

A famous example of this tension played out in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yellowstone-flooding-means-job-housing-cuts-for-seasonal-workers-2022-8">Yellowstone National Park</a> when wolves <a href="https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/wolf-restoration.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were hunted to extinction</a>. This allowed other species, that would normally be controlled by the wolves, like elk, to balloon in size.The elk <a href="https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/cyclesprocesses.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">overgrazed the park's</a> Aspen and Willow trees, and the ecosystem began to change. But scientists pushed for wolves to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yellowstone-needs-more-beavers-2015-7">be reintroduced in 1995</a> things began to balance out. Though the effects of the reintroduction are still playing out, scientists have said bringing back the wolves benefited raven, eagle, beetle, wolverine, magpie, coyote, and bear populations, according to <a href="https://www.yellowstonepark.com/things-to-do/wildlife/wolf-reintroduction-changes-ecosystem/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Yellowstone Park</a>. So in the case of gators, which have had population swings over past decades, officials are careful to take note, Watkins said. They play an important role in their ecosystem, creating habitat for fish with the holes they dig, and managing populations of prey animals, biologists Mike Heithaus and Maureen Donnelly <a href="https://phys.org/news/2016-06-alligators.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Phys.org</a>. <h2><div type="image" title="gator" height="600" width="800" msid="103445095" hostid="261"></div>Keeping good public relations</h2>Another factor that plays into controlling gator populations is the fact that the more gators there are, the more likely they are to spill out of their natural habitats and come into contact with humans, Watkins said. There is no shortage of news stories about alligators <a href="https://www.insider.com/cambodian-farmer-killed-40-crocodiles-2023-5">harming humans</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/alligator-louisiana-house-intruder-2023-7">squaring off with pets</a>, and generally <a href="https://www.insider.com/video-massive-alligator-florida-golf-course-naples-2020-11">being a nuisance</a>.It's best for both the alligators and humans to keep their populations separate, at least from a public relations standpoint, Watkins said. People don't tend to take too kindly to being confronted by the dinosaurs. In his experience, Watkins has seen hunters tend to keep all these concepts in mind when they sign up for a license. He said that it may seem counterintuitive, but many of the people who are out there hunting have a deep respect and care for the animals they are seeking.Amongst those hunters, he's observed a universal, "ethos, of essentially wanting to contribute to that kind of larger conservation effort."
