Sony, LG, Nvidia, Dell and others have started teasing CES launches: Here’s what we could see

With the <keyword id="36208" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="festive-season">festive season</keyword> posing a major challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Union Health Ministry has issued guidelines for large gatherings, including ensuring adequate area for events with a detailed site map and proper markings to maintain social distancing and not allowing touching of idols and holy books, to prevent the spread of infection. Festive events shall be permitted only outside the containment zones, while people residing in the restricted areas may be encouraged to observe all festivals inside their homes and not move out, according to the ministry. Releasing the 'Standard Operating Procedures', the ministry said that the period from October to December witnesses large gatherings for religious worship, fairs, cultural functions, processions, etc, and it is important that necessary preventive measures are followed for such events which may last a day, a week or more. As far as feasible recorded devotional music/songs may be played and choir or singing groups should not be allowed, the SOPs stated. Keeping in view the physical distancing norms, event sites should have adequate floor area and proper markings at all locations which are likely to be visited by the public, the SOPs said underlining that only those staff and visitors who are free of symptoms shall be allowed inside the venue. All staff and visitors will be allowed entry only if they are using face cover/masks, which have to be worn by all at all times and physical distance of a minimum of six feet, when queuing up for entry and inside the venue, as far as feasible has to be followed. Specific markings for the purpose may be done. "In case of events that run for days or weeks, the crowd density doesn't remain the same throughout and usually peaks around certain hours of the day and some previously known auspicious days. "Planning for the event should specifically factor this so that crowds are regulated and managed to ensure physical distance and frequent sanitization," the SOPs said. In the case of rallies and immersion processions, the number of people should not exceed the prescribed limit and proper physical distancing and wearing of masks must be ensured. Events such as rallies, and processions spread over long distances may require the support of ambulance services, it underscored. The competent authority may implement additional measures within their jurisdiction as per their local assessment and in line with activities permitted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as per its orders issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 from time to time. Disinfection of premises has to be undertaken if any person is found positive. "Identify spatial boundaries and prepare a detailed site plan which would facilitate compliance with thermal screening, physical distancing, sanitization etc," it said. Close-circuit cameras etc. may be considered to monitor compliance of physical distance norms, wearing of masks at each venue. In the case of rallies and processions, route planning, identification of immersion sites, ensuring cap on numbers, physical distancing, etc. must be planned and measures for enforcement outlined. All events must plan for medical care arrangements with linkages to the nearest hospitals to attend to health emergencies, the guidelines stated. The guidelines issued for theatre and cinema artists will apply to stage performers. According to the SOPs, the event sites should have a designated isolation room or space for isolating any person found symptomatic during the events, till such time that medical help is available. Preferably multiple and separate entry and exit points for visitors shall be ensured, the ministry said adding the structure or venue for the event must also have adequate natural cross-ventilation and entrances should have mandatory hand hygiene and thermal screening provisions. Proper crowd management inside and outside premises like parking lots, waiting areas, stalls, eateries, etc. duly following physical distancing norms shall be ensured. For entry into religious places, footwear needs to be preferably taken off by the people inside their own vehicle. If needed they should be kept in separate slots for each individual or family by the persons themselves, the guidelines said. The SOPs outlined that seating arrangement in pandaals, food courts and shows must ensure adequate physical distancing. Any shops, stalls or cafeteria outside and within the premises too shall follow physical distancing norms at all times and there should be arrangements for safe drinking water. Community kitchen managers and business owners of food outlets have been directed to ensure adherence to the highest level of personal and environmental hygiene all the time. Persons above 65 years of age, persons with comorbidities, pregnant women and children below the age of 10 years are advised to stay at home. This applies to the event managers and staff as well, the guidelines said. Effective and frequent sanitation within the premises shall be maintained with particular focus on commonly touched surfaces and areas including lavatories, drinking and handwashing stations/areas. Cleaning and regular disinfection (using 1% sodium hypochlorite) of frequently touched surfaces (doorknobs, elevator buttons, handrails, barricades, seats, benches, washroom fixtures, etc.) should be made mandatory in all public utility common areas, the SOPs stated. On Tuesday, the Health Ministry put the caseload in India at 66,85,082. The total recoveries surpassed 56 lakh improving the recovery rate to 84.70 per cent.

With people being stuck at home, yearning for fresh content with nowhere to go, OTT platforms came to the rescue. Most platforms witnessed an uptick in its uptake, with people spending more and more time on the platforms. According to a recent report by FICCI and the Producers Guild of India, around 148 million Indians subscribed to online curated content platforms. Another report by RBSA Advisors also predicted that India's video OTT market may hit $12.5 billion by 2030 from around $1.5 billion in 2021 owing to access to better networks, smartphones, and digital connectivity. The pandemic no doubt has given the industry a boost and most platforms are doing all they can to woo consumers. While competing with each other for producing and licensing better, more differentiated content, last year also made most of these platforms realize that consumers are wanting to watch local content and most platforms have been investing on producing local and regional content. Within the OTT space in India, homegrown platform ALTBalaji has been witnessing a healthy growth in the past few years. The 4-year-old platform said recently that it is currently catering to an MAU base of over 10 million, having sold 2.9 million subscriptions in H1 alone. The platform is also seeing an audience engagement metrics of 83 minutes per day. While witnessing good growth from non-metro cities in India, ALTBalaji also recently announced its partnership with Telenet to further its reach into Nepal. We recently caught up with Divya Dixit, SVP - Marketing &amp; Revenue, ALTBalaji to take a look at ALTBalaji’s journey so far and what has helped it woo audiences in a space that is increasingly becoming cluttered. Excerpts: Q) It's been over 4 years since the launch of ALTBalaji. Can you walk me through a few of the highlights? ALTernative content being the core ethos of the group, ALTBalaji completed four glorious years of entertaining the audience with their non-stereotypical and out of the box storytelling. Currently catering to an MAU base of over 10 million, we have sold 2.9 million subscriptions in H1 alone, in this highly competitive Over-The-Top business. The platform also sees an audience engagement metrics of 83 minutes per day, with different genres catering to varied audiences. At ALTBalaji, we constantly sought innovation in content, technology as well as marketing. With a library of around 90 original shows on the app and yet many more to be released, our content library has received accolades for its disruptive work and also seen the engagement time grow to over 83 minutes since the last quarter. As a result, there has been a steady upward growth for the past two years. Furthermore, being one of the most economically viable OTT platforms in the country, catering to almost all sections of society with a varied genre of shows, the various web series on the digital platform have received recognition from IMDB in terms of the ratings and numbers. Our recent action-thriller web series Cartel with an IMDB rating of 8.2; Broken But Beautiful 3 with 8.7; Mai Hero Boll Raha Hu with 8.7; Apharan with 8.3, The Test Case with 8.4 and Bose with 8.8 are some of the shows which have received rave reviews and numbers. With the growth of technology, penetrative pricing and tailor-made content for audiences, ALTBalaji has seeped into the country's hinterlands. We worked quickly and identified the needs of the hour, leading to shows that made impact and kept people entertained right in their homes. Q) Considering how people have been stuck at home since last year, they are still looking for entertainment and looking for it on OTT. How did you strengthen your content offering in the last 1.5 years to create an edge for yourself in the market? While the pandemic added to the platform's growth, ALTBalaji's journey over the past four years has been ever-growing. Engagement time has exponentially increased and subscriptions continue to grow at a steady pace. Many variables decide viewership, ranging from the technology available to the preferred content to the time people had in hand. So fortunately, from the platform's perspective, there has been no dip in the number of viewers. Cities like Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata with a 2.19%, 1.32%, and 0.99% growth YOY are among the few major cities that have added to a significant expansion in ALTBalaji's subscribers in the past year. We have been quick to understand that content is the deciding factor to draw in more viewers. So, it was essential to personalize content as per the viewer's preferences, which we constantly work on. The most crucial part our strategy is our out-of-the-box narratives. The content itself is tailor-made to attract larger audiences. We believe in creating shows that appeal across segments and narratives out of the box or unexplored. Recent shows like The Married Woman, Broken But Beautiful 3, and Cartel have been making headlines, and we are ecstatic with the response. Broken But Beautiful 3 set benchmarks with 180 million viewers and 220 million impressions with an innovative marketing strategy. Other notable shows like Crashh, Mai Hero Boll Raha Hu, His Storyy and Cartel have given ALTBalaji an edge over most platforms. Q) What sort of investments are you putting in on acquiring new content, producing them yourself? OTT content consumption has witnessed a steady growth throughout and will continue to do so on its own. However, the lockdown period has scaled up the OTT content consumption game, and I believe now is the time for OTT platform players to sit back and rethink their strategy. ALTBalaji has always sworn by original content. The platform churns out unique content and gives a launchpad to many aspiring talents across the board. Since our launch in 2017, we have ensured that our costs are restricted to Rs 150-Rs 160 crores per annum, out of which content cost has been around Rs 110 crore. Also, we aren't in the business of acquiring content. It is because we've mastered the art of making content at one-third the price that our peers are spending. In the year 2021 alone, the platform launched 20 original shows, and many more are in production Q) What kind of growth did you witness last year after the lockdown? Have you been able to retain the growth? The pandemic has scaled up the OTT content consumption game and ALTBalaji has seen a significant rise in engagement levels. ALTBalaji has seen a 15-20% growth in its viewership numbers; however, the lockdown increased subscribers from the Hindi heartlands. With the increase in appetite to consume our diverse library of originals and our shows catering to the mass audience, we have 59% of our viewership coming from the non-metros. While cities like Lucknow, Ludhiana, and Guwahati saw a huge increase of 189.84%, 106.50%, and 108.41%, respectively, Srinagar, Shimla, and Ranchi weren’t behind either, with an uprise of 103.81%, 103.05%, and 192.01%, as compared to ALTBalaji's viewership from these cities in 2020. 18% of our overall traction comes from the global audience, without any aggressive marketing. ALTBalaji established a precise positioning of 'OTT of the masses' with Hindi Colloquial Content for the Bharat audience and Hindi Speaking Diaspora. Q) With multiplexes opening up, do you think the growth for your platform will stagnate? What is your customer retention strategy? OTT has created new opportunities for content distribution across geographies. Viewers have adapted to the flexibility of time, convenience and choice of watching content. 2020 certainly acted as a catalyst in transforming the audiences' content consumption habits, converting fence-sitters and one-time visitors to subscribers, thereby increasing the overall subscription base and engaging more with the existing ones. Furthermore, the low cost of mobile network and affordable smartphones have revolutionized the OTT video streaming industry. In conclusion, surviving the market demands despite the opening of theatres is possible with affordable pricing, diverse content bouquet, buffer-free experience, and immersive innovations. Going out to mingle and unwind by watching movies is still a part of our culture and hence multiplexes will always remain important. Q) From a marketing perspective, what are you doing differently to be top of mind in the consumer's mind? Going ahead, what will your key areas of focus be? Our digital strategy covers all the bases when it comes to youth-friendly platforms. We have realized that influencer engagement is the way to go in this time &amp; age. Our romantic series Broken But Beautiful 3 have been picked up as a case study since the show achieved 180 million viewers with 220 million impressions through our marketing campaign. We also partnered with short format apps for youth oriented UGC, multiple digital payment gateways for our various youth-centric brands to ensure the audience has the smoothest experience possible. In 2020 alone, ALTBalaji has partnered with almost 25-30 brands for each of our show release that enabled incredible growth for both parties. We have a robust analytics platform with a live dashboard that provides us information on views and engagement along with the socio-economic and demographics of our viewers to generate behavioural consumption patterns to sharpen our retention strategy. What works optimally for us is to focus on consumer segmentation, mapping audience behaviour, focused customer retention, optimizing customer life cycle, and progressive strategies for onboarding new consumer segments; who are new to the internet or women in smaller markets, etc. Besides Instagram and Twitter, we also actively use WhatsApp to engage with our users. To further penetrate the Hindi heartlands, we will simplify our UI/UX by bringing in voice search, one button click registration, and easy payment modules in retail and digital. We foresee that we can target growth in the youth segment, over and above male and female target audience aged between 20-40 years. Vocal for local is sure to make it big in 2021. Gamification and Virtual reality, along with social commerce, will be the next big consumer engagement drivers on OTT. Q) Since digitization has sped up since the lockdown, how are bringing in new users? How are you reaching out to audiences deeper in the country who are also hungry for good content? Massification of content has been our goal right from the very beginning, and that shall see us lay further impetus towards expanding our content library. The various genres that we dabble into have massive scope for OTT players to explore the segment and expand their footprint by tapping into Tier II and Tier III markets. In parallel, we are continuously improving our UI/UX to ensure easier subscription, voice search, vertical video formats and a more effortless viewing experience for our audiences. The data analytics combined with targeted marketing also allows us to acquire customers lower than the industry standards. We also intend to extensively leverage data for predication analysis on the shows as the library expands, which feeds back into the content teams, enabling them to take sharper decisions on content creation Q) How are you making the platform more user-friendly, technologically more stable to be on the same level as a few of the global OTT players? The entry of new players in the OTT landscape or the rising influence of an existing player does not bother us. We welcome competition. It expands the consumer base and brings in new business opportunities and strategies. ALTBalaji also tied up with Amazon Pay and MobiKwik, two of the most trusted and convenient payment options for online transactions making the app more user-friendly, especially at payment and checkout. The tie-up with Amazon Pay enabled the subscribers to win up to Rs 50/- cashback while MobiKwik gave subscribers up to 10% cashback, credited to the users' wallets in under 24 hours. With these offers, subscribers will have no difficulty switching over to these safer and quicker, one-click transaction options for all future purchases. It's not quite time to turn the projectors back on, but we're getting very close – so I'd like to share where we're at and what's ahead as we finalize how we'll reopen Alamo Drafthouse locations this summer. We want you to feel safe. Our driving principle has been to make the Alamo Drafthouse experience one of the safest possible indoor activities – "safer than a supermarket" – and far exceed the expectations you already have for supermarkets, gyms, and restaurants. We intend to make it so that you can leave your car, make it to your seat, enjoy your food and drinks, and be able to leave having never come within six feet of another person other than when your order is delivered, and having never touched a surface other than your chair and table – both of which will be sanitized between screenings with an electrostatic fogger and disinfectant. But there's a third exec who should receive credit: Scott Stuber.In just over two years, the head of the company's original films division has bridged the gap between the movie establishment and the streaming giant like no one has before.He's overseen some of the most high-profile titles the streamer has produced, from its three-time Oscar winner "Roma" last year (including best director for Alfonso Cuarón), to numerous Oscar hopefuls this year ranging from Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," to Noah Baumbach's "Marriage Story," to Fernando Meirelles' "The Two Popes."And thanks to Stuber's deep ties in Hollywood, he's helped Netflix make inroads with movie theater owners at a time when Netflix is testing the conventions of how movies are released to the public.Business Insider spoke to Netflix insiders, analysts, and Hollywood producers to profile one of the streamer's most important executives.<h2>Stuber learned both the business and creative sides of filmmaking early on</h2>Stuber, 50, got into the business in the early 1990s on the ground floor as a publicity assistant at Universal. There was nothing glamorous about the entry-level position, though at times he caught a glimpse of Lew Wasserman, the longtime executive at the studio and Hollywood titan.Stuber likes to tell the story of his one encounter with Wasserman when he was an assistant. Nine months into the job - while completing his daily chore of going to the executive's office at 8 a.m. to drop off a xerox copy of all the coverage Universal titles had in the trades - he found himself face-to-face with Wasserman."Hey, son … what do you want to be when you grow up?" Wasserman asked Stuber, as he recalled during his keynote conversation with Ron Howard at the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avinWGGzP7w">Produced By: New York conference in November</a>. Stuber had a simple reply for the legend: "You.""Keep showing up on time and maybe you will," Wasserman told Stuber before going on with his day.Stuber got into film production shortly after when he became a creative assistant to producer Lauren Shuler Donner and her husband, director Richard Donner. In 2004, Stuber began his climb up the executive side when he was named copresident of production at Universal, and then shifted to full-time producing in 2008. "Having the ability to know what it's like to be in a trailer at two in the morning with bad coffee and something went wrong … sitting in my home in Burbank and yelling at you is not the way you run a studio. Having been on the other side, I go, 'Okay … we have to figure it out.'"<h2>Stuber's deep Hollywood ties have made the industry more willing to let Netflix into its ranks</h2>Around the time Netflix was beginning to get into the movie business with the release of its first original feature-length film, "Beasts of No Nation" in 2015, Stuber had a breakfast with Sarandos, set up through a mutual friend. Stuber said there was one part of the conversation that stood out to him."A lot of times people want to get into film and come into it in a mechanical way or do it in a business model way," Stuber said at Produced By: New York. "But [Sarandos] said, 'One thing I would like to have done right now is 'Wolf of Wall Street.'"Stuber thought that was an interesting choice, as at the time it was known as a project that was a challenge for director Martin Scorsese to find financing for. In a town where executives want sure things, Sarandos seemed to be a risk taker. "And I felt, that guy knows films," Stuber said. "The fact that he would lean into Marty and Leo [DiCaprio, who played the lead in the movie] and want to try to make that, it just struck me."So in 2017, when Sarandos and Netflix came calling with an offer to run the streamer's original movie division, Stuber was up for the challenge. Movies fill an important role in Netflix's slate. The company has said that people routinely turn to its films in between binge-watching series. Netflix previously said about <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-viewing-is-a-third-movies-no-matter-what-2016-12">one third of its total viewing was films</a>, a ratio that tended to remain constant despite catalog differences between regions.<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5df39a20fd9db2036e036675-1698/de niro old.jpg" alt="the irishman" />NetflixRobert De Niro in "The Irishman," which is one of Netflix's titles vying for Oscars.So as Hollywood studios began to launch their own competing streaming services, and take their films off Netflix, the company has had to beef up its originals to satisfy subscribers and gain new ones. Stuber is looking to green light 60 original films a year with budgets ranging from $20 million to $200 million. Those include independent films, documentaries, comedies, non-English-language titles, and blockbusters. All these divisions are headed by different individuals with Stuber overseeing it all, like a studio chairman at one of the traditional studios."One of the things I realized when I got [to Netflix] is there was a bunch of confusion in the marketplace because people didn't know how to access us," Stuber said at Produced By: New York. "So we've tried to spend a lot of time over-communicating so that you can find the right person."Stuber leaves the day-to-day operations to his executives, but many producers have realized that when big moves need to be made, Stuber is there to get it done."The Two Popes" producer Dan Lin, who has known Stuber since 2002 when Lin was a creative executive at Warner Bros., recalled how quickly Stuber got behind the movie, which was already in development at Netflix when Stuber joined the company."Often new leaders will only champion projects that they bought themselves, that wasn't the case at all here," Lin told Business Insider. "Scott inherited this project but immediately identified it as a movie that Netflix should be making. "He also does what he says he's going to do. I've never been let down by Scott."But Stuber has never had a problem satisfying the creatives. And with the huge checks Netflix writes for movies, and its reputation for creative freedom, the addition of Stuber is a bonus as the steamer continues to ramp up its originals catalog with upcoming titles like "Red Notice," starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds; Ron Howard's "Hillbilly Elegy," starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close; and the Ryan Murphy-produced "The Boys in the Band."The more impressive trick Stuber has pulled off in his short time at Netflix, however, has been building a relationships with movie theater chains.The theatrical run by "Roma" last year was a big step forward in smoothing out the rocky relationship Netflix has had with the exhibition scene. Stuber spent a lot of 2017 making the rounds to the major theater chains and trying to build some kind of relationship, according to a source within Netflix. That led to independently owned theaters like Landmark and Alamo Drafthouse showing more Netflix titles.But there's still work to be done with the big chains.The rift has been kept open by the fact that Netflix will not respect the exclusive 72-day theatrical window. This has caused the three biggest chains in the country - AMC, Regal, and Cinemark - to refuse to play Netflix movies.Still, Stuber has made headway."The Irishman" was close to getting the widest release ever for a Netflix title, as the company had discussions with AMC and Cineplex to show the movie. But talks stalled over how short the exclusive window would be (the chains wanted 60 days, Netflix wanted 45). AMC and Cineplex also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-netflix-failed-the-irishman-wide-release-deal-2019-11">tried to get the higher end of the ticket sales split</a>, which is rare. "He very much wants to come to a deal with theater owners, and has assembled a great team to do it, but he doesn't have the final say," one industry insider with knowledge of the talks Stuber has had with theaters owners told Business Insider. This person said Stuber's boss, Sarandos, seemed to feel getting the movies quickly to Netflix subscribers was more important than agreeing to extended theatrical runs.That puts Stuber in a tricky situation, since the filmmakers and stars he's wooing to Netflix still want their movies to play in theaters. (And to get Oscar consideration, movies have to have played theatrically in at least New York and Los Angeles.)With "The Irishman" unable to play at any of the big chains, Netflix went outside the box and showed it on Broadway, screening the movie in midtown New York's historic Belasco Theatre."It was an ingenious idea," "The Irishman" producer Jane Rosenthal told Business Insider of the movie playing at the Belasco. "Scott's passion and commitment to ensure that Marty's vision was going to be delivered the way Marty wanted, it was unwavering."<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5ddc1e7dfd9db22c337dd95c-2400/paris theatre 2 netflix.jpg" alt="Paris Theatre 2 Netflix.JPG" />NetflixNew York City's Paris Theatre.And Stuber was also a major force in Netflix taking over the lease for New York City's Paris Theatre.The 71-year-old movie house was the last single-screen theater in the city and closed in early 2019 after its previous lease expired. Netflix brought it back to life and played "Marriage Story" there for months. Then in November, the company announced <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-leases-paris-theatre-in-new-york-city-2019-11">it was taking over the lease</a>. The conventional thinking was that Netflix would use the space to show its new original titles and sidestep working with theaters. But the current plan is to use the space for retrospectives and special screenings, not as a first-run venue, according to a source within Netflix (the company is also in talks to take over The Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles).And then there's Imax. The large-format screen company has worked in the past with Netflix in doing special screenings and its CEO, Richard Gelfond, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/imax-ceo-wants-to-show-more-streaming-netflix-movies-2019-12">told Business Insider</a> he wants to work more with Netflix and other streaming services going forward."It's not a Netflix issue, it's a business issue," Stuber said at Produced By: New York of the current theatrical window. Amazon Studios also recently changed its release model and will now only have theatrical runs of a few weeks before putting its movies on Prime Video. "If everyone would just be calm and talk through it, over the next few years as an industry we'll be able to find the right answer for everyone," Stuber said.<h2>Movies are key to helping Netflix fend off new competition from Disney Plus and others</h2>As 2020 starts up, along with Netflix working on scoring some Oscar gold, the company is gearing up to face the new streaming competition, like Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus, and HBO Max.That makes Stuber's job all the more exciting, as he's spoken in the past of his competitive side that goes back to his college baseball days. And it seems his boss is also up for the challenge."We quickly evolved to the movies that everyone wished they made and that's what I'm shooting for," Sarandos said at the UBS TMT Conference in December on what the future holds at Netflix. "These are films that you would have seen in the theater that any studio will be thrilled to have at the center of their slate, but they are premiering on Netflix and being produced the way that the filmmaker wanted to make it and could make it."Investors are eager to see if Netflix can keep pushing the envelope and make big titles (like Michael Bay's "6 Underground") alongside auteur-driven Oscar bait (Scorsese's "The Irishman")."It remains to be seen if 2020 will be a breakout year for movies [at Netflix]," Tuna Amobi, analyst at CFRA Research, told Business Insider. "It could be the biggest buzz year yet for the movie side of the business."But what's already clear is that Stuber is the perfect fit for a company that wants its way to become the new normal in Hollywood, and shed the remnants of its outsider status."Scott isn't in the development business - he is in the filmmaking business, which is what every filmmaker wants," Lin said on why he would work with Stuber again. Netflix's movie boss Scott Stuber has charmed Hollywood and made inroads with theaters. We talked to insiders about his career rise and future plans.

The Fed says the economy is doing just fine

"NI HAO" and "chi ku" may be the two commonest phrases in this riveting worm's-eye account of the Chinese in Africa. They mean, respectively, "hello" and "eat bitter".
The first is relentlessly used by Howard French, a veteran American reporter with a Ghanaian wife who has been based in both Africa and China for the New York Times and speaks Chinese, enabling him to converse with an array of Chinese people in Africa, from rugged bricklayers in Zambia and brothel madams in Liberia, to engineers in Mali and farmers in Mozambique.
The second phrase is used by many of Africa's new Chinese diaspora to denote their ability to live rough in remote and inhospitable places and to work staggeringly hard, qualities that the continent's previous roaming visitors, principally from Britain, France and America, seem to have lost, at least in Chinese and African eyes.
The numbers are hard to pin down. Mr French reckons that the million cited in his book's title may be an underestimate. Most of them, he says, came to work on big projects, then stayed on as adventurous entrepreneurs on their own or in family groups. Chinese companies bring far more of their own people to work in menial jobs than Western companies would ever do.
Mr French says that in 2011 China's parliament debated a proposal, admittedly fanciful, to deploy as many as 100m people in Africa. The rumour circulating widely in Africa that many of the more roughneck types of Chinese incomer are prison labourers is, he says, entirely baseless.
The trade and investment figures are hard to verify, too. According to one source used by Mr French, "China's Export-Import Bank extended $62.7 billion in loans to African countries between 2001-2010, or $12.5 billion more than the World Bank." Other figures go even higher. What is clear, at any rate, is that Chinese people and money have flooded into Africa in the past decade, chiefly to buy raw materials to fuel China's roaring economy.

What is tantalisingly unclear is whether the Chinese economic onslaught is the result of a methodical policy fashioned in Beijing as part of an imperialist venture to promote "Chinese values" and dominate the continent as Europeans did a century ago, or whether it has become a self-generating process fired up by individual Chinese who are simply keen to enrich themselves without the slightest intention of kowtowing to the authorities back home.
The conversations recorded by Mr French in a dozen of sub-Saharan Africa's 48 countries leave an impression that strongly supports the second thesis. Indeed, many of the Chinese in Africa excoriate the Communist Party back home and have dared to start new lives far away precisely to breathe fresher air--much as pioneers from Europe did when heading to the new world or to the dark continent. Many cite the Chinese ruling party's corruption as a spur for seeking a freer climate elsewhere and even say that Africa is a lot less corrupt by comparison.
At the same time, many Chinese in Africa have intensely nationalist feelings, often expressed in crudely racist terms. They tend to stick together, perhaps even more tightly than other incomers in the past. They are wary of joint enterprises with Africans, except at the highest level, where presidents and generals come into play.
Africans are routinely derided by the ordinary Chinese, in virtually every country Mr French visits, as lazy and incompetent; "90% of Africans are thieves," says a leading entrepreneur in Namibia. In Liberia a Chinese hotelier explains that his compatriots generally bring their own towels for fear of using one previously used by "hei ren" ("black people") as they are lumpenly known.
Far from embracing Chinese values, many Africans have become wary of them. In Guinea, writes Mr French, "there was mounting resentment over the way China was seen to be...despoiling the environment, dispossessing powerless landholders or flouting local laws, fuelling corruption, and, most of all, empowering awful governments."
The dumping of cheap and shoddy goods is another source of complaint, and poor safety standards at work yet another. In Namibia, a local activist says Chinese businessmen often pay their labour a third of the official rate. Illegal fishing, ivory-smuggling and logging by Chinese operators are rife. African worries about such activities and behaviour are gaining ground across the continent.

Some African leaders, by contrast, plainly like the Chinese approach to government and big business, which puts human rights and transparency totally to one side, while ritually uttering the official mantra of "win-win": Africans and Chinese benefit equally.
The presidents of Angola and Zimbabwe are notorious examples, but others abound. Moreover, if Western donors or investors try to lay down conditions on such matters, African leaders have become adept at threatening to "go east".
As a massive transactional process, China's entry into Africa has been a dramatic success, and many of those roads and bridges are useful. But as an ideological and cultural undertaking, Mr French's masterly account suggests that it is getting nowhere.

If you're worried that the third time won't be a charm for Tony Stark, the sequel has already launched successfully in a dozen overseas locations, aiming toward a <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-report-iron-man-446492" target="_blank">$110 million debut</a> in its opening week. 
The first wave of <a href="http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/iron_man_3/" target="_blank">'Iron Man 3' reviews are overwhelmingly positive</a>, praising Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley's menacing villain The Mandarin, and surprise twists from director Shane Black.
Black took over the director's chair from <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0269463/?ref_=tt_ov_dr">Jon Favreau</a> who oversaw the first two films to screen, a role which <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/shane-black-to-direct-marvels-iron-man-3/" target="_blank">worried some</a> since he's mostly known for screenwriting ("Lethal Weapon"). Previously, he had other film under his directorial belt, 2005's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0373469/">Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang</a> in which Robert Downey Jr. also stars.
"<keyword id="745513" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Iron-Man-3">Iron Man 3</keyword>" follows Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) after the fallout of last year's summer blockbuster, "The Avengers."
The film is partially based on a six-issue "Extremis" comic in which villain The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) unleashes an army of soldiers with the help of scientist Aldrich Killain (Guy Pearce). 
"Iron Man 3" won't be in U.S. theaters until May 3, but, until then, here's what you need to know before deciding to see the film.
Downey Jr. is as superb as ever in his return as Tony Stark:

"Special mention should also go to Guy Pearce, who is just about believable as the unfortunate Killian in the film’s early scenes, and then absolutely spellbinding as the character becomes more refined and ambiguous later on in proceedings." 
Despite all the revealing teasers and trailers of late, there are a few unexpected twists that will still surprise:

 "The ante is upped beyond mere contemporary relevance by some major surprises—one of them, at the 75-minute mark, quite startlingly funny—that shoot the film up to an entirely different level of screwy humor and large-canvas spectacle."
Some of the action sequences may hit close to home for some. There's a scene that shows an attack in front of Hollywood's Chinese Theatre where it appears bombs go off:

"Although clearly unintentional, the movie’s recurring images of severed limbs and burning bodies can’t help but strike a queasy note in light of the recent events in Boston."
The film's a trite long at more than two hours. (The film's runtime is <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1300854/" target="_blank">130 minutes</a>.)

"If there’s a criticism, it’s that the film slows down somewhere around the halfway mark and it wouldn’t have hurt to chop out a good 20 minutes from that epic running time."

"Coming in at just over two hours, it suffers a few saggy sequences (Rhodes’ detour to Afghanistan, for example) that weigh down the film’s convoluted middle act."

"Ty Simpkins ... plays a kid who runs into Tony at his lowest point, and what could be a disgustingly syrupy relationship in the wrong hands is actually very funny and does a nice job of reminding Tony about humility."
The biggest downsides with a new director is that the film feels a bit overwhelming and overly reliant on technology:

"Favreau’s handcrafted touch is conspicuously absent, particularly his affection for retro, Ray Harryhausen-esque visual effects. (This is by far the most digital-looking series entry.) Perhaps fittingly for a movie that introduces a new generation of remote-guided Iron Man suits, “Iron Man 3” all too often feels as if it were assembled by a machine."
<a href="http://www.timeout.com/london/film/iron-man-3?intcid=leader" target="_blank">Time Out</a>:
"He [Black] seems out of his depth during the larger set pieces: the action sequences are busy and confusing, especially the misjudged, threat-free climax. The result is a film which never settles into a comfortable groove. It tries to be an angsty ‘Dark Knight’-style game changer, an ’80’s-throwback action romp, a nudge-wink pastiche and a CG-fuelled spectacular."
Don't see it in 3D.

"3D post-conversion adds absolutely nothing, apart from some irritating plastic glasses to your face and a layer of murk that renders set-pieces occasionally hard to follow." 
Overall, the film is a thrill ride:

"A superhero flick with smarts, depth and a marvelously mischievous sense of fun."

"If this does turn out to be Downey Jr.’s final solo outing, it’s a very strong exit."
General consensus: See it ASAP
Shane Black hits it out of the park in his second directorial debut with Robert Downey Jr. at his side once again. Though early trailers for the film made the third "Iron Man" <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-iron-man-3-vs-the-dark-knight-trailers-2012-10?op=1" target="_blank">appear as broody as a "Dark Knight" film</a>, it looks like another fun ride with Downey Jr. in the driver's seat as Tony Stark. 
"Iron Man 3" is out in the U.S. May 3.
