India’s <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> scene is changing drastically. Internet penetration has unboxed a new world of exclusive content that’s widely popular among the masses. 
 At such a critical crossroad when most industries are expected to go the <keyword id="6369871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mobile-app">mobile app</keyword> way, Business Insider India chats up with Karan Bedi, COO of <keyword id="2480506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Eros-Now">Eros Now</keyword> to find out what the future of the entertainment might look like. 
 
1. A mere 7-8% of India’s population is online. Don’t you see that as a limiting factor to online movie streaming? 
 
While the numbers today are not that large, they are growing, and with telcos gearing up for 4G, it’s a massive potential market. In India, 7-8% is still a large number, and we expect it to be 50% in the next 2-3 years. 
 
2. Eros Now has announced online-only premieres for some recent films. Could this dilute the media attention theatrical premiers get? 
 
 Theatrical premiers are of paramount importance. The charm of the big screen is here to stay. With our online initiative of ‘TV se pehle’ (Before it comes on TV) we are streaming some of our key properties for online viewing. At Eros we believe digital is the future of the entertainment industry, and we’ve stepped ahead of satellite television to jump directly to Eros Now. 
 
3. Online original series are a rage today with players like AIB and TVF grabbing eyeballs. What’s the potential market for such free online shows? 
 
The limit is only the size of the population that has access to the internet. Like with TV, there is always space for everyone in the country to be involved in some form of online entertainment content. TVF and AIB have their focus on short-form funny stuff, and while we may have similar content, some of it has a completely different genre. 
 
4. How do you see entertainment consumed in the future? 
 
There is an unequivocal belief that the future of entertainment is on the internet. India is primarily a mobile-first market, and is getting to a point where it might be a mobile only market. Entertainment has moved light years ahead of TV. 
 
5. Many experts argue against that with the statistics of the digitized TV audience. Your comments on that. 
 
Being the largest studio in Bollywood, Eros has been historically known for top quality entertainment. Our sense of content is unparalleled and that’s a big driver of audiences to our platform. Our technical base also allows us to offer cool new platform specific features that our audiences would enjoy and can innovate with. 
 
6. Developing economies like India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore are the global hubs for piracy. Do you see these people willing to pay for movies or music? 
 
Piracy has been a concern for the entertainment industry for times immemorial. Now we have pirated DVDs, before that we had pirated cassettes. As platforms evolve, piracy would also evolve. However, if you give people easy access to content that promises them a great experience at a reasonable price, they would come on board. 
 
7. What could possibly be the dominant models for entertainment monetization? 
 
There are several monetization models - transactional, ad supported or subscription-based. Many others are evolving. It’s too early to decide what works best and what doesn’t. 
 
8. Any plans to go app only? 
 
There are no plans as of now. We are rolling out apps for Smart TVs and adding new functionalities to the app and website.

Shemaroo TV will target the Hindi-speaking markets of India and will aim to connect, interact, and reach out to families who are continuously looking to adapt to new changes. The channel will come up with a mix of originals and iconic shows, which will be consumed for the first time by a broad set of FTA audiences. The channel will be available to audiences on all major DTH operators and cable networks. Speaking about the company's entry into the TV segment, <keyword id="207966" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hiren-Gada">Hiren Gada</keyword>, CEO, Shemaroo Entertainment said, "There is a large audience hungry for content on FTA channels. Its a largely under-served market and a huge demand for content. The content of Shemaroo is spread across different verticals through which we maintain a healthy relationship with viewers and advertisers equally. While we manage large digital platforms, entering into the broadcasting space will help us with reach and enable us to build a stronger affinity with the audiences. With the launch of our flagship channel, Shemaroo TV, we are excited to strengthen our presence in the industry and deliver our promise of entertaining the Indian audiences." While the current lockdown will mean Shemaroo will not be able to market the new offering in the usual manner, they are going big on TV and Digital. They will also partner with 'like-minded brands' spread across Digital, TV and media, shared <keyword id="32440" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="rahul-mishra">Rahul Mishra</keyword> , Head Marketing and Communications, Shemaroo Entertainment. "The idea is to reach out to audiences through each other's strengths in this tough situation," added Mishra. <keyword id="276655" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sandeep-Gupta">Sandeep Gupta</keyword>, COO - Broadcast Business, Shemaroo Entertainment added, "If we see the current TV space and particularly the Free To Air space, there is large consumption of content but with less variety of shows and genres. Mumbai: Food delivery company <keyword id="19901323" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zomato" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Zomato" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> has completed the <keyword id="19901090" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="acquisition" source="keywords">acquisition</keyword> of <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paytm" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Paytm" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Paytm">Paytm</keyword> subsidiaries WEPL and OTPL for the <keyword id="19922574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="entertainment" source="keywords">entertainment</keyword> <keyword id="20028334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ticketing" source="keywords">ticketing</keyword> business, the company said in its filing with the exchanges. On August 21, the Deepinder Goyal-led company entered into definitive agreements for the acquisition of Paytm's entertainment arms. In its stock exchange filing on August 21, Noida-based Paytm had also confirmed the development. The deal, valued at Rs 2,048 crores on a cash-free, debt-free basis, stands "as a testament to the value" Paytm has created through its entertainment ticketing business, bringing choice and convenience to millions of Indians with its services and scale, the company said in a release filed with exchanges. As part of this agreement, OCL will transfer its entertainment ticketing business to Zomato by transferring OCL's entertainment ticketing business to its 100 per cent subsidiaries, Orbgen Technologies Pvt Limited (OTPL) and Wasteland Entertainment Pvt Ltd (WEPL) and selling a 100 per cent stake in its subsidiaries OTPL and WEPL, which operate the TicketNew and Insider platforms, respectively to Zomato. As per the information provided by the fintech, about 280 existing employees from the entertainment ticketing business will be part of Zomato. Paytm had said that the company wants to focus on the payments and financial services distribution segment. During a transition period (up to 12 months), the movie and event tickets will continue to be available on the Paytm app, as well as on the TicketNew and Insider platforms, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted experience for users and merchant partners. As per Paytm, the company built movie ticketing from the ground up and acquired TicketNew and Insider for a total consideration of Rs 268 crores from 2017 to 2018. Further, additional investments were also made to scale up the business. On Wednesday, after the announcement, the stocks of Zomato opened in green at Rs 256.20. How NFTs are changing the entertainment industry

<ul><li>The year 2020 has been one of turbulence and disruption that will have a far-reaching impact on consumer behaviour.</li><li><keyword id="1530230" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Markand-Adhikari">Markand Adhikari</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director, <keyword id="3517320" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sab-group">SAB Group</keyword> writes how the year drawing to a close will change the <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Media">media</keyword> and entertainment industry.</li></ul>The year that is drawing to a close has changed the world forever. For each of us, life is going to be marked in two periods - ‘<keyword id="9311631" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="pre-covid">pre-COVID</keyword>’ era and ‘post-COVID’ era. After the Spanish Flu of 1918, the world had forgotten pandemics and when one broke out, we were not prepared at all. As lockdowns and mobility restrictions came into force to counter the spread of the virus, various sectors were forced to hastily work out their business continuity plans. The only solace was that the <keyword id="50691" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital">digital</keyword> connectivity had matured enough in recent years to keep life going amid shutdown. Thus, many sectors could figure out ways to ensure continuity. Remote learning and continued education is one example. The other is, of course, the entertainment and media sector, which, like any other business, has also faced unprecedented turbulence in 2020. COVID-19 Impact on Media and Entertainment Industry Television channels, as utility service, had to go on, and their viewership witnessed a spike, as people were largely confined to their homes and the TV set (or the mobile phone screen) was their only point of contact with the outside world, and thus the only source of news as well as diversion. The consumption of content, thus, increased greatly. Unfortunately, this did not result in a similar increase in revenue. This is ironic. With the overall economy taking a hit, there were wage cuts and job losses, reducing the overall purchasing power of consumers. As a result, their spending was restricted to the most essential items alone which means that at least during the period of the extended lockdown, from April to early July, there was no point in any marketing activities, including advertising. Thus, while viewership increased, content consumption increased, for entertainment and media industry expenses increased, but its revenues hit rock bottom. As the lockdown was gradually lifted, restrictions were eased and life began to limp back to normality in July, the revenue streams started picking up again – though very slowly. Further, with the onset of the festive season, general entertainment channels reached pre-COVID levels in terms of revenue, but most niche channels have not yet reached the same point. However, one big exception has been the news segment: for obvious reasons, news channels have benefitted from the lockdown because more and more people turned to them more and more often for updates on the coronavirus and lockdown measures. Post COVID-19 Media and Entertainment Industry As the world adjusts to a new normal, consumer behaviour is rapidly evolving. There is ever-increasing demand for at-home digital media like OTT platforms which are now expanding to new demographics and locations. This will continue to magnify post-COVID. Further, even once the crisis subsides; it would take some time for consumers to adopt external consumptions models again. Therefore, technological advancements would play a pivotal role in bringing outdoor entertainment directly to consumers at their home. The future is digital. We will not just see the addition of new users but also increasing the retainership of existing digital consumers. Online gaming consumption and demand for OTT originals is only going to increase as technological advances greatly aid them. The best part is that their model is subscription-driven and not dependent upon advertisers. Though television is very much here to stay, OTT is going to gain a lot of traction in the mid-term. Further, the dependency of M&amp;E companies on technology will likely increase to leverage cost-efficiency and create revenue enhancement opportunities. As monetisation and revenue in terms of ad-spend, continues to grapple, profit protection and cash management with greater technology integration will gain strategic significance for M&amp;E companies. The industry is likely to remain focused on sustenance at current levels along with a renewed emphasis on flexibility which would accelerate the move to a variable cost model and reduced fixed costs. While the long-term implications of COVID-19 are yet to emerge, the above mentioned developments will likely come into focus in the M&amp;E industry as the post-COVID reality becomes clearer. Summing Up! If we take a long-term view, COVID-19 has put the world behind by at least two to three years, and returning to the normal will take as much time. Moreover, it may not be normal as earlier, but a ‘new normal’. A year is a long time, and many fears and many habits have become a part of us, and it will be difficult to dislodge them for long. Many people may continue taking precautions even after successful administration of the vaccine, which will further impact consumer decisions and behaviour.

Given its inherently creative nature, the <keyword id="19952648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="entertainment-industry" source="keywords">entertainment industry</keyword> appears somewhat insulated from the AI threat. <keyword id="19897536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Netflix" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> Co-CEO <keyword id="20150988" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ted-sarandos" source="keywords">Ted Sarandos</keyword> shares this optimism, expressing his belief that Hollywood's <keyword id="21857588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="creative-jobs" source="keywords">creative jobs</keyword> are likely to be safe from AI encroachment. In a conversation with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/25/magazine/ted-sarandos-netflix-interview.html">The New York Times</a>, Sarandos explained: “I think that AI is a natural kind of advancement of things that are happening in the creative space today, anyway. Volume stages did not displace on-location shooting. Writers, directors, editors will use AI as a tool to do their jobs better and to do things more efficiently and more effectively. And in the best case, to put things on-screen that would be impossible to do.” Sarandos drew parallels with the evolution of animation, pointing out the significant leap from hand-drawn to computer-generated animation, which now employs more people than ever. He also recalled the initial resistance to home video, with studios refusing to licence movies to television for decades. Each technological advancement in entertainment has faced opposition but eventually spurred industry growth, and Sarandos believes AI will follow the same pattern. Finally, addressing concerns about AI replacing creators, Sarandos said: “I have more faith in humans than that. I really do. I don’t believe that an AI program is going to write a better screenplay than a great writer, or is going to replace a great performance, or that we won’t be able to tell the difference. AI is not going to take your job. After staying out of the paparazzi eye while growing up, <keyword id="4952" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Michael-Jackson">Michael Jackson</keyword>'s oldest son is stepping out in a very public role.

Jackson's son is only 16.

"It is a critical shift," said Brickson Diamond, CEO of talent search and corporate culture consultancy Big Answers.Executives are also more willing to have difficult but critical conversations around topics like structural inequality. "More organizations and their executive leaders are willing to engage with concepts and subject matter that were previously too charged, including tenets of white supremacy, anti-racism, and micro-behaviors," said Robert Raben, the CEO of public-affairs firm the Raben Group. And studios and networks are thinking more about how to vet their content and where there might be biases they can't see."No one wants to be the Golden Globes and no one wants their box office smash tarnished by controversies around racism or a lack of representation," said Y-Vonne Hutchinson, CEO and founder of the diversity and inclusion training firm ReadySet. "These higher expectations and the scrutiny aren't going away."But there are other areas where the experts said entertainment companies still need to do better:<h2>1. Entertainment companies need to invest 'blockbuster' money to get blockbuster results</h2>One of the biggest missed opportunities the experts highlighted was a lack of investment in diversity and inclusion on the part of major Hollywood organizations. When it comes to recruiting, entertainment companies are still starting their searches for BIPOC senior talent too late in the game, and offering those candidates too little pay."The only thing worse than being late is being short on the money," said Diamond, the recruiter. "Hiring organizations are still bringing matinee money to blockbuster talent negotiations."<h2>2. People of color need access to power in the industry</h2>Beyond representation, people from underrepresented groups need to be empowered within their organizations. A chief diversity officer is just a figurehead if the role is not given access to the company's CEOs, as well as the staff, resources, and budgets needed to get their jobs done, said Harper, the DEI strategy advisor. Harper said he's encouraged executives asking whether or not to hire a chief diversity officer to "resist haphazardly creating these positions without role clarity, appropriate resources, infrastructure, support, and executive authority.""It frustrates me that most of them are talented professionals of color who have been set up to fail," Harper said.Axelle Bagot, CEO of Leadership Lab International, which is advising the HFPA, also said entertainment companies need to approach DEI work with "a holistic vision that works across all departments.""This is too much for any DEI officer to handle, and eventually will cost the organization much more in resources and well-being," Bagot said. <h2>3. Hollywood needs to rally around elevating Black voices and voices of other underrepresented groups</h2>While progress has been made on some measures of representation, many groups are still being left behind, as recent research including the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative's <a href="https://assets.uscannenberg.org/docs/aii-inequality_1300_popular_films_09-08-2020.pdf">annual study of inequality in film</a> has shown. The industry needs to invest more in uplifting underrepresented voices and giving them the creative power to tell their stories.Advocacy group Color of Change, for example, is working with Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dei-leaders-working-to-make-hollywood-more-inclusive-diverse-list-2021-8#kristen-marston-color-of-change-5"> to elevate Black voices in Hollywood</a>, and says it's in talks with prominent companies including WME and its sibling Endeavor Content, and BLD PWR to commit to the initiative."The industry has purposefully excluded Black talent, silenced Black voices, derailed Black careers, and leveraged the economic power of the industry to prop up police departments in the very real world," said Kristen Marston, culture and entertainment advocacy director at Color of Change.
