New Delhi: Aviation safety regulator the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (<keyword id="19899185" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DGCA" source="keywords">DGCA</keyword>) has placed <keyword id="19987725" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="SpiceJet" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SpiceJet" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="SpiceJet">Spicejet</keyword> under '<keyword id="20073402" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="enhanced-surveillance" source="keywords">enhanced surveillance</keyword>' with immediate effect. A senior DGCA official said that based on reports of cancellation of flights and financial stress being experienced by <keyword id="22971642" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="spicejet-airlines" source="keywords">Spicejet Airlines</keyword>, a special audit of Spicejet engineering facilities was conducted on the August 7 and Auugst 8, 2024, which has revealed certain deficiencies. Following a series of occurrences reported on the Spicejet fleet in 2022, a special drive of spot checks was undertaken during which Spicejet was permitted to release aircraft for operations only after confirming to DGCA that all reported defects/malfunctions had been rectified. During the year 2023, based on reports of the airline being under financial stress, it was again placed under enhanced surveillance. In light of the past record and the special audit carried out in August 2024, Spicejet has once again been placed under enhanced surveillance with immediate effect. This would entail an increase in the number of spot checks and night surveillance with a view to ensure safety of operations. According to reports, the airline's passengers were on Thursday barred from checking-in for their flights at Dubai airport over delayed payments. On reports of cancellation of Spicejet flights from Dubai, the airline spokesperson said, "Due to operational reasons, a few SpiceJet flights from Dubai were cancelled. Affected passengers have been accommodated on subsequent SpiceJet flights, on other airlines or provided with a full refund. All our scheduled flights from Dubai are now operating as planned."

DGCA places Spicejet under enhanced surveillance after conducting special audit

Security agencies will be deploying artificial intelligence-based security systems with enhanced <keyword id="22713904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surveillance-features" source="keywords">surveillance features</keyword> and automated crowd estimation facilities at and around <keyword id="20283480" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Red-Fort" source="keywords">Red Fort</keyword> on the upcoming Independence Day, sources said. A document accessed by the reveals that CCTVs having video analytics features will be deployed at important locations at the venue. The intelligence video surveillance system will have features like a vehicle number plate recognition system, face detection, people movement counting, tripwire, audio detection, intrusion, defocus, and abandoned or missing objects. "We will also be using AI-armed cameras to count the entry and exit of people inside the premises. The estimation of the crowd will be done through AI," an official added. The cameras, said the official, will have the capability of detecting abandoned baggage in public places. Intrusion detection features will be the security of high risk. Different zone-based alarms can be set as per priority and sensitivity of each zone. The advanced FRS facility will be in recognition of faces on live cameras as well as on recorded videos. Detect any matches with faces on the "Watch List" database and provide alerts to the control room. Detecting multiple faces from group images and searching for similar faces from a single camera or across multiple cameras. An enrolled person can be searched by names or similar faces and also search via. unknown faces using a single image or group photo. Divulging further details on the new changes, a senior government official informed that they have been using a <keyword id="20903661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="facial-recognition-system" source="keywords">facial recognition system</keyword> for the past several years but this year they will be deploying Number Plate Recognition (NPR) that will have vehicle plate detection based on real-time 24x7 video processing. It will immediately video record and snapshot each vehicle or violated vehicle. It will be integrated with multiple cameras or sensors for driver image capture. Delhi police will be deploying more than 700 CCTVs and more than 150 cameras having video analytics features. More than 10,000 security personnel, including Delhi police and paramilitary jawans, will be deployed in and around the Red Fort and other crucial locations in central and north Delhi. A team of central intelligence agencies and all concerned security agencies visited the Red Fort and held a security review meeting recently for the Independence Day event. At the review meeting, held in the backdrop of the attack on former US president Donald Trump during a public meeting, additional arrangements would be needed to maintain a stricter vigil at the high-security event, reliable sources claimed. Security forces to deploy AI-based security systems at Red Fort on Independence Day

In a statement, <keyword id="6354787" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dgca" source="Orion">DGCA</keyword> informed that, in a significant move towards enhancing safety standards in the aviation industry, DGCA has taken stringent measures to ensure compliance with regulations through the conduct of <keyword id="1808201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surveillance-activities" source="Orion">surveillance activities</keyword> on airlines, aerodrome operators, approved organisations, and aviation personnel under its regulatory control to meet laid-down safety obligations. Extensive surveillance mechanisms play a pivotal role in safety by mitigating potential safety risks and enhancing safety margins across the industry. During the year 2023, DGCA intensified its safety oversight efforts and conducted a staggering 5745 surveillances (4039 planned surveillances, 1706 spot checks and night surveillance), which is an all-time high. This marked a notable increase of 26 per cent in surveillance activities compared to the year 2022, emphasising the commitment to ensure compliance and safety within the aviation landscape. Consequent to the findings of the surveillance conducted, enforcement action on non-compliant personnel, airlines, and other operators was taken. A total of 542 enforcement actions were taken in the year 2023 witnessing a 77 percent increase as compared to the 305 enforcement actions carried out for the year 2022. Significant enforcement actions for the year 2023 included the suspension of the Approved Training Organisation of Air India and financial penalties on airlines like Air India, Air Asia, Indigo and Spice Jet for various non-compliances. Enforcement actions were also taken against erring pilots and cabin crew, ATCOs, non-scheduled airlines, flying training organizations and aerodrome operators. In a blog post late last night, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said "<a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_blog/archive/2013/12/04/protecting-customer-data-from-government-snooping.aspx">government snooping potentially now constitutes an 'advanced persistent threat,'</a> alongside sophisticated malware and cyber attacks."
"We all want to live in a world that is safe and secure, but we also want to live in a country that is protected by the Constitution," Smith continued.
It's unusually bold stuff.
And Microsoft has done this before. Back in July, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-tells-the-obama-administration-the-constitution-is-suffering-under-prism-2013-7">Smith suggested that the NSA's domestic surveillance program, PRISM, was unconstitutional</a>.
The company has vowed to conduct a war on government spies and hackers, Smith said. The company will begin encrypting all email and other services, and it will scramble data passing between its servers.
And it is adding language to its business contracts vowing to notify customers of every request for information it gets from the government, and to fight every gag order in court.

Protecting customer data from government snooping
4 Dec 2013 9:00 PM The following post is from Brad Smith, General Counsel &amp; Executive Vice President, Legal &amp; Corporate Affairs, Microsoft. Many of our customers have serious concerns about government surveillance of the Internet. We share their concerns. That's why we are taking steps to ensure governments use legal process rather than technological brute force to access customer data. Like many others, we are especially alarmed by recent allegations in the press of a broader and concerted effort by some governments to circumvent online security measures - and in our view, legal processes and protections - in order to surreptitiously collect private customer data. In particular, recent press stories have reported allegations of governmental interception and collection - without search warrants or legal subpoenas - of customer data as it travels between customers and servers or between company data centers in our industry. If true, these efforts threaten to seriously undermine confidence in the security and privacy of online communications. Indeed, government snooping potentially now constitutes an "advanced persistent threat," alongside sophisticated malware and cyber attacks. In light of these allegations, we've decided to take immediate and coordinated action in three areas: · We are expanding encryption across our services. · We are reinforcing legal protections for our customers' data. · We are enhancing the transparency of our software code, making it easier for customers to reassure themselves that our products do not contain back doors. Here's a closer look at what we're doing: Expanding Encryption For many years, we've used encryption in our products and services to protect our customers from online criminals and hackers. While we have no direct evidence that customer data has been breached by unauthorized government access, we don't want to take any chances and are addressing this issue head on. Therefore, we will pursue a comprehensive engineering effort to strengthen the encryption of customer data across our networks and services. This effort will include our major communications, productivity and developer services such as Outlook.com, Office 365, SkyDrive and Windows Azure, and will provide protection across the full lifecycle of customer-created content. More specifically: · Customer content moving between our customers and Microsoft will be encrypted by default. · All of our key platform, productivity and communications services will encrypt customer content as it moves between our data centers. · We will use best-in-class industry cryptography to protect these channels, including Perfect Forward Secrecy and 2048-bit key lengths. · All of this will be in place by the end of 2014, and much of it is effective immediately. · We also will encrypt customer content that we store. In some cases, such as third-party services developed to run on Windows Azure, we'll leave the choice to developers, but will offer the tools to allow them to easily protect data. · We're working with other companies across the industry to ensure that data traveling between services - from one email provider to another, for instance - is protected. Although this is a significant engineering effort given the large number of services we offer and the hundreds of millions of customers we serve, we're committed to moving quickly. In fact, many of our services already benefit from strong encryption in all or part of the lifecycle. For example, Office 365 and Outlook.com customer content is already encrypted when traveling between customers and Microsoft, and most Office 365 workloads as well as Windows Azure storage are now encrypted in transit between our data centers. In other areas we're accelerating plans to provide encryption. Reinforcing Legal Protections We also will take new steps to reinforce legal protections for our customers' data. For example, we are committed to notifying business and government customers if we receive legal orders related to their data. Where a gag order attempts to prohibit us from doing this, we will challenge it in court. We've done this successfully in the past, and we will continue to do so in the future to preserve our ability to alert customers when governments seek to obtain their data. And we'll assert available jurisdictional objections to legal demands when governments seek this type of customer content that is stored in another country. Except in the most limited circumstances, we believe that government agencies can go directly to business customers or government customers for information or data about one of their employees - just as they did before these customers moved to the cloud - without undermining their investigation or national security. And when those limited circumstances arise, courts should have the opportunity to review the question and issue a decision. Increasing Transparency Just as we've called for governments to become more transparent about these issues, we believe it's appropriate for us to be more transparent ourselves. We're therefore taking additional steps to increase transparency by building on our long-standing program that provides government customers with an appropriate ability to review our source code, reassure themselves of its integrity, and confirm there are no back doors. We will open a network of transparency centers that will provide these customers with even greater ability to assure themselves of the integrity of Microsoft's products. We'll open these centers in Europe, the Americas and Asia, and we'll further expand the range of products included in these programs. Ultimately, we're sensitive to the balances that must be struck when it comes to technology, security and the law. We all want to live in a world that is safe and secure, but we also want to live in a country that is protected by the Constitution. We want to ensure that important questions about government access are decided by courts rather than dictated by technological might. And we're focused on applying new safeguards worldwide, recognizing the global nature of these issues and challenges. We believe these new steps strike the right balance, advancing for all of us both the security we need and the privacy we deserve.

Microsoft Says Government Surveillance Is An 'Advanced Persistent Threat' That May Be Unconstitutional

One of them was a radar-equipped unit to complete a system of surveillance satellites that will allow Tokyo to monitor any place in the world at least once a day.
The other was a demonstration satellite to collect data for research and development.
The H-IIA rocket blasted off from the southern island of Tanegashima around 1:40 pm (0440 GMT) and released the satellites as planned, according to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
"The rocket flew as planned and released both satellites," JAXA said in a statement, confirming its success.
From an altitude of several hundred kilometres, the radar satellite will be able to detect objects on the ground as small as a square metre, including at night and through cloud cover.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has taken a hardline stance on North Korea, hailed the successful launch.
"The government will make the most use out of the system... in order to enhance our country's national security and crisis management," he said in a statement, according to national broadcaster NHK.
Japan developed a plan to use several satellites as one group to gather intelligence in the late 1990s as a response to a long-range missile launch by Pyongyang in 1998.
The space agency has said the radar satellite would be used for information-gathering, including data following Japan's 2011 quake and tsunami, but did not mention North Korea by name.
But the launch came as Pyongyang has vowed to carry out more rocket launches and a third nuclear test in protest at tightened UN sanctions over its banned launches.
The North last year launched two long-range rockets. The first failed in April but the second in December flew over the southern Okinawa island chain, jangling nerves in Japan.
