A little over 100 years ago, India had released its first film. It was a silent Marathi movie titled ‘Shree Pundalik’ that was screened at Coronation Cinematograph in Mumbai (then known as Bombay) on May 18, 1912. 
 
Thereafter, India produced a number of silent movies on a gamut of issues and finally, we had our first sound movie ‘Alam Ara’. 
 
With growing production of movies in different Indian languages, India also saw the advent of its own movie theatres. Theatres started coming up in 1930s, prior to which movies were screened in studios and in tents! 
 But in pre-independent India, movie theatres were called ‘talkies’ and were considered a big thing. Even British used to throng these talkies to entertain themselves. Yes, we even screened English movies. The <keyword id="6365313" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="East-India-Company">East India Company</keyword> has also, for the fact, produced Indian movies. 
 
So, on the eve of 69th Independence Day, we bring you stories of theatres from four metropolitan cities born in the pre-independent era.

 The Hindi version of the movie is also drawing audiences as Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan voiced Mufasa in the dubbed version. Disney’s Lion King inches closer to ₹500 million business in India in its first week

Upcoming films collaborating with brands to reach out to more audience is nothing new. But a superhero movie's tie up with brands would definitely be at par with it superpower. As per a news report by The Economic Times, Hollywood superhero film 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' has emerged as the most-marketed movie in India, tying up with 50 brands for promotions, double the number of brand associations Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Ra.One had inked. The sequel to <keyword id="319257" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="The-Avengers">The Avengers</keyword>, the highest-grossing Hollywood film so far, expects to earn Rs 120 crore in retail sales from tie-ups with brands including Pepsi-Co's <keyword id="6439698" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="mountain">Mountain</keyword> Dew, Funskool and Pantaloons, said a person involved in the marketing deals. Till now Ra.One, which raked in Rs 50 crore from product placements with 25 brand associations, has been the most marketed movie in India. 
 
The difference in marketability between Hollywood and Bollywood films has blurred, thanks to various English movie channels. "Brands partnering with Avengers are leveraging on its popularity in India, with the Indian audience showing similar preferences as global ones. This is a record brand association for any Hollywood film in the country," Abhishek Maheshwari, VP and head at Disney Consumer Products told the ET.

 Disney’s FROZEN 2 is now the biggest weekend grosser for any animation movies in India collecting ₹19.10 NBOC (₹22.74 cr GBOC) in 3 days. Families and kids thronged theaters in huge numbers. According to Box Office India, the film posted a healthy weekend but might not hold well on weekdays. Disney India got Priyanka Chopra and Parineeti Chopra on board to voice Elsa and Anna — two lead characters of Frozen 2 (Hindi Version), says Walt Disney Studio. In anticipation of competition, no big movie was released along with it. Directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, Frozen 2 released in India in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu on November 22. The first part of the film, Frozen released in 2013 and reportedly earned about ₹4 crore from India alone. Globally, Frozen 2 had the biggest ever opening weekend. The company on Tuesday (June 17) launched India’s first multiplex on the Partynite Metaverse platform. The 20-screen multiplex — which is a part of Airtel’s video app Xtream — will showcase content portfolios from leading over-the-top (OTT) platforms it has partnered with. A quick scan of the website reveals that Airtel Xstream offers content from OTT platforms like Amazon Prime, Sony Liv and Eros Now. The Xstream multiplex is an extension of Airtel’s Xstream Premium offering, which added two million subscribers within 100 days of its launch. “Airtel’s Xstream multiplex provides a larger-than-life experience, which brings together Web 3.0 apps and immersive storytelling, and an assortment of content from our partners. We all know people’s love for movies and entertainment in India. Through the metaverse, we are looking to tap into a larger audience, giving content enthusiasts an opportunity to sample Airtel’s Xstream Premium offering and, thus, aiding in driving higher adoption,” Shashwat Sharma, director of marketing at Airtel, said in a statement. Chetan Bhagat, What’s With All These Numbers?

Most of us have grown up reading Superman, Batman or Tintin as far as English <keyword id="52527" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Comics">comics</keyword> are concerned, and Chacha Chaudhary and Saboo, who represent the Indian smarties. But now the Indian comic genre is going to get another superhero in Krrish. Graphic India and Filmkraft Productions have announced that they will bring the comics series of Krrish, based on the popular Indian movie superhero played by <keyword id="6354563" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Hrithik-Roshan">Hrithik Roshan</keyword>. 
 The first <keyword id="106984" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="edition">edition</keyword>, called Krrish: Menace of Monkey, will be available in stores later this year. It will also be converted into a digital comic book that will have weekly chapters and can be read through the Krrish comics app. 
 The team of legendary comic book creators, Tom De Falco, Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema, who have worked on leading comic book characters such as <keyword id="88398" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="Spider-Man">Spider-Man</keyword>, Superman, Thor and <keyword id="319257" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="The-Avengers">The Avengers</keyword>, have been roped in to write the scripts for Krrish chapters. An international team of comics designers and animators have also been hired to portray Krrish as an international comics superstar. 
 
All this seems exciting for the Indian comics reader. However, a major part of the success or failure of this comic strip superhero will depend on how the movie does in the coming weeks. There are plenty of comics aficionados who want a real Indian superhero and Krrish seems like the one who can carry the Indian torch. We hope the light shines bright for him.
