The British government will introduce legislation in 2021 that will require all newly built homes and offices to feature electric vehicle chargers in <keyword id="6355981" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="england" source="Orion">England</keyword>, the media reported.<br /><br />Specifically, all new homes and offices will have to feature "smart" charging devices that can automatically charge vehicles during off-peak periods.<br /><br />New office blocks will need to install a charge point for every five parking spaces, Electrek reported.<br /><br />The new law will make England the first country in the world to require all new homes to have EV chargers, the report said.<br /><br />It will also boost confidence in helping those who transition from gas cars to overcome range anxiety, as so many homes in England don't have off-street parking or garages.<br /><br />The proposal is part of the movement to rapidly boost the number of chargers across England ahead of the UK's 2030 ban of new fossil-fuel vehicles, the report said.<br /><br />The government originally announced a proposal to mandate that all new homes have a charge point with a parking space in 2019, as Electrek then reported.<br /><br />The home and office <keyword id="2910653" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ev-charger" source="Orion">EV charger</keyword> mandate is expected to start in 2022.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Expensive electricity rates are making home charging a headache.</li><li>Home charging has long been thought of as a solution to range anxiety.</li></ul><p>Eggs, gas, and now electric vehicles. Inflation is hitting electricity rates, making EV home charging a more miserable experience for some drivers at the absolute worst time.</p><p>A new J.D. Power study of EV owners who use Level 2 home-charging stations found that overall satisfaction in the home charging experiences has declined 12 points since last year. (More on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-charging-stations-explained-levels-plugs-tesla-supercharger-2022-12">EV charger types here</a>). A major factor in this decline in satisfaction was the inflationary rise in electricity prices, the study found.</p><p>This could pose a real problem for the EV market, as home charging has often been held up as a solution to daily range-anxiety issues. Without a robust public charging infrastructure, daily home charging is currently key to effective EV ownership, according to automotive executives, dealers, and analysts.</p><p>"Whether you're an automaker, dealer or utility company participating in the EV ecosystem, improving the EV owner experience with respect to home charging should be a common goal shared by all," Brent Gruber, executive director of the EV practice at J.D. Power, said in the study. </p><p>Gruber pointed to several programs designed to ease the cost of EV home charging, including options to schedule charging at the most affordable times of day. But the J.D. Power study found that this is little awareness for these money-saving tricks, which brings down the overall experience.</p><p>"As the EV marketplace continues to grow, brands that help owners take advantage of these offerings will be in a much better position down the road," Gruber said.</p><h2>Where you are and what you drive matters</h2><p>Geography played a role in overall satisfaction levels with home charging, J.D. Power found. In New England, where electricity prices surge at peak hours, home charging satisfaction saw the largest year-over-year decline. </p><p>Only about half of EV owners in the study said they had an understanding of their local utility company programs for home charging. Increasing this awareness is key to improving the EV home charging experience, said Adrian Chung, J.D. Power's director of utilities intelligence.</p><p>"This can snowball into helping potential EV owners make a more informed purchase decision, as well as minimizing home charging concerns and supporting greater EV adoption," Chung said.</p><p>Different brands also had different levels of satisfaction, with Tesla home charging stations topping the list.</p>

EV owners are increasingly frustrated with home charging, and it should worry every electric car maker

The reduced environmental impact and lower cost are appealing — but their range and the process of charging make me anxious to take the plunge, even as EVs go farther and charging points become more common. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/16/autonation-ceo-electric-car-range-anxiety.html">AutoNation CEO Mike Jackson</a> said in February that most <keyword id="11893543" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ev" source="Orion">EV</keyword> drivers were still not taking overnight trips away from their home-charging setup.</p><p>By chance, I got the opportunity to have a monthlong test drive and experience what relying on an EV to <keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">travel</keyword> long distances is really like.</p><p>In my day job as a TV and events presenter, I had to drive with a colleague around Britain working at food events. When my client offered me an electric <keyword id="12153707" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="volkswagen" source="Orion">Volkswagen</keyword> ABT Transporter, I jumped at it.</p><h2>I knew it wouldn't be easy</h2><p>The ABT had a range of only 80 miles, so my trip required numerous charges during the day and constant planning. Each morning, rather than setting a location in a GPS and simply setting off, we'd have to map the route via fast-charge points, individually checking each point against recent Google reviews to ensure they were in service.</p><p>Even this couldn't guarantee that another driver wouldn't slip in before us when we arrived.</p><div type="image" title="Open charging stations for electric vehicles in the UK" height="3000" width="4000" msid="88740311" hostid="261"></div><p>Apps like PlugShare and Zap Map allowed for route planning. User-sourced data theoretically allows drivers to see which charge points are out of service or in use, but even using this information I found issues with one in four of the 36 charge points I visited over the month. </p><p>At some charge stations, these apps showed there was a free charging point because there were several. But at one, it turned out to be only possible to charge one vehicle at a time.</p><p>I immediately called the responsive customer service for the point's owner, Gridserve, who confirmed this.</p><p>This wasn't an isolated incident. We had to wait at times for a charge point for up to 45 minutes. Repeatedly doing this could add hours onto a longer journey.</p><div type="image" title="Issues with a charging station on EV road trip" height="3024" width="4032" msid="88740312" hostid="261"></div><p>Waiting also highlighted another issue. Gas stations are designed to facilitate cars lining up at the pump. But on weekends and public holidays, we encountered charge points in stations that had numerous cars waiting, with no obvious way to tell who arrived when and no obvious place to wait without blocking other drivers.</p><h2>I was also glad I wasn't alone, as some of the charge points were badly lit</h2><p>Another recurring issue was having to register to use new charge points, which could be challenging in places where I had limited signal. You can aim for a charge point you're already registered at, but with more than <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/five-facts-state-us-electric-vehicle-charging-network-2021-09-01/">300 electric-charging companies</a> globally, that's not always possible.</p><div type="image" title="PodPoint charging station for EV" height="3024" width="4032" msid="88740314" hostid="261"></div><p>Traveling across Britain, the provision of charge points — and by extension the inconvenience of one being unavailable — varied. One time we arrived at a fast-charge point at a highway gas station, only to discover the card reader wasn't working to start the charge.</p><h2>With limited options, we finally rolled into a spot at Ikea with less than 1 mile left of charge</h2><p>It got me thinking how difficult it must be in more remote parts of the world.</p><p><a href="https://www.myev.com/research/comparisons/comparing-public-electric-vehicle-charging-networks">California</a> is home to a third of all the EV charge points in the US, but in <a href="https://www.driveelectricnd.com/charging-station-map/">North Dakota</a>, home to only 60 charging stations, a suddenly out-of-service charge point could leave you stranded.</p><div type="image" title="Out of order EV charging station" height="3024" width="4032" msid="88740315" hostid="261"></div><p>The VW ABT and other electric vans such as the Mercedes <a href="https://www.hotcars.com/the-best-electric-vans/">eVito</a> — which has a range of 93 miles — have a significantly lower range than personal vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 (278 miles) and Mustang Mach E (370 miles). Range anxiety might be gone, but numerous inconveniences can still add hours to cross-country journeys. </p><p>The most common 7-kilowatt chargers in shopping-center parking lots in the UK require just under eight hours to charge a typical EV. </p><p>There were two of us, so one could check the apps to be sure we were heading to faster charges. But those driving alone must rely on highway signs to direct them, which don't specify what is available. More detailed signs would be incredibly helpful. </p><p>On the flip side, the low financial and environmental cost of my month on the road was significantly more important to me than the inconvenience.</p><div type="image" title="Charging staiton" height="3024" width="4032" msid="88740318" hostid="261"></div><p>The average gas price in the UK is about <a href="https://www.confused.com/on-the-road/petrol-prices">1.45</a> pounds (about $1.96) per liter, which works out at around 25 pence (about $0.34) per mile, compared with about 12.5 pence (about $0.17) per mile or 10 pounds (about $13.50) per full charge on the ABT.</p><p>This would be a lot cheaper for those able to charge at home rather than public charge points. </p><p>True, it required more planning, but with <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/31/us-ev-charging-system-a-priority-under-bidens-2-trillion-infrastructure-plan.html">500,000 charge points in the US promised by 2030</a>, I'm hoping the problems I encountered will be no more when I buy an EV for myself.</p>

Buzz that's been turned into an RV from London to Paris.</li><li>Getting there was painless, with plenty of charging points in both England and France.</li></ul><p>I got to borrow a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vw-id-buzz-us-electric-volkswagen-van-bus-photos-2023-6">Volkswagen ID. Buzz</a> for a few days, so I decided to take it across to English Channel on a quick trip to Paris.</p><p>While my journey offered a glimpse into the electric future of road trips, a couple of hiccups reminded me that long-distance electric-vehicle driving was still not quite the same as filling your tank with gas and hitting the open road.</p><h2>Route to Paris</h2><p><a href="https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/electric-and-hybrid/electric-cars/id-buzz.html">The electric ID. Buzz costs the equivalent of about $80,000</a> in the UK and makes its US <a href="https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/electric-vw-bus-for-north-america-and-europe-world-premiere-of-the-id-buzz-with-long-wheelbase-16126" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debut next year</a>.</p><p>The one I drove was converted into an RV by the UK travel company <a href="https://www.wilddrives.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wild Drives</a> and features a pullout bed and a kitchen area.</p><div type="image" title="Interior of the Volkswagen ID Buzz, converted by Wild Drives." height="3024" width="4032" msid="101238021" hostid="261" sizebytes="488592"></div><p>Wild Drives charges £360, or about $460, to rent the van for two nights. It pretty reliably went for 200 miles at full charge, though that's not great compared with other electric vans — and far less than many Teslas have. </p><p>I set off from Brighton, south of London, just before midday and headed toward Folkestone to take the train that transports vehicles through the Channel Tunnel.</p><p>I saw a Tesla Supercharger station that also catered to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-charging-non-tesla-at-supercharger-kia-2023-3">non-Tesla vehicles</a>. It cost £21.60 to bring the charge from 40% to 80%.</p><div type="image" title="Volkswagen ID Buzz at Folkestone Tesla Supercharger." height="3024" width="4032" msid="101238022" hostid="261" sizebytes="687084"></div><p>While I waited, I walked around the stores in the Eurotunnel terminal. I didn't mind the wait and had time to kill anyway ahead of my time slot on the train.</p><p>It was nice to know I didn't have to factor in crossing borders into my driving range.</p><div type="image" title="The Eurotunnel train that carries cars from England into France." height="1080" width="1440" msid="101238025" hostid="261" sizebytes="116358"></div><p>Taking France's A26 highway was a good example of effective EV infrastructure. There were charging points at gas stations every 25 miles or so. They had Starbucks, McDonald's, and a few other chains, as well as WiFi, which let me relax and work while the van charged.</p><p>The chargers themselves were even faster than the Tesla Supercharger back in England — and far cheaper. I got the battery from 30% to 100% in just 30 minutes, and at a minimal cost.</p><div type="image" title="Left, McDonald's at a French service station, right, the charging pot at a French service station." height="1080" width="1440" msid="101238026" hostid="261" sizebytes="93538"></div><p>Even though the charge was never too far from my mind, the reliability and frequency of the charging stations let me relax for the eight-hour trip.</p><p>The ID. Buzz, with its bright yellow and white exterior, certainly turned heads, and I attracted a few people who asked to take a look inside.</p><p>I found a campsite by the Seine that's surprisingly close to the center of Paris. A solar panel on the roof provided power for a USB charging port and an induction cooktop, making everything feel pretty homey.</p><div type="image" title="Paris's west end, where I was able to stay in a campsite" height="1080" width="1440" msid="101238027" hostid="261" sizebytes="161578"></div><h2><strong>Range anxiety </strong></h2><p>The drive back to London was a different story. Because I wanted to take a different route to test more of France's charging network, I left Paris with about 100 miles of range and took the A16 toward Calais.</p><p>Unfortunately, the availability of charging stations on this road was a very different experience. </p><p>About 60 miles into the journey, I passed a gas station on the other side of the road — the first one I'd seen. Because my map showed another one a few miles along, I kept going — big mistake.</p><p>For some reason, this charging station required drivers to have their own cable. This sparked a mild panic as I found myself in a butcher shop beside the highway stammering in broken French to ask whether anyone might have a "câble de charge." They did not.</p><p>I decided to return to the previous gas station and made it with about 15 miles of charge left and a lot more anxiety than when I departed Paris.</p><p>It proved a wise decision. After leaving with a full charge, I discovered there wasn't another station for at least 50 miles. </p><div type="image" title="Picture of French A16." height="3024" width="4032" msid="101238028" hostid="261" sizebytes="396524"></div><p>While it might say more about France's scattered charging network than the Buzz, it was a stark reminder of the "range anxiety" that keeps some drivers from biting the electric bullet. The shorter range and inconsistent charging points are still a world away from driving with a fossil-fuel-powered engine.</p><p>And there's also the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-owner-first-road-trip-warns-charging-curve-2023-5">charging curve</a> to contend with — hills and winding roads are going to chew through the battery power much faster than a straight, flat road.</p><p>And for RVs, where the aim is often to drive to more remote locations for longer periods, it's easy to imagine your trip being consumed by range anxiety. It's also partly why I haven't yet bought an EV, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-car-problems-reasons-not-to-buy-yet-2022-12">in line with my Insider colleague Tim Levin</a>.</p><p>Still, I had a blast in the Buzz on my trip to Paris — and it was both cheaper and cleaner than a gas-powered equivalent. Next time, I'll stick to the A26.</p>
