"They (Centre) are saying protocols will be followed. Following the same protocols that the Centre wants 28 lakh students to follow, lakhs of Indians have tested positive," Sisodia told reporters. "So many top leaders have got infected with COVID-19 despite taking all precautions. So, how can we take the risk of sending 28 lakh students to exam centre and be assured that they will not be infected," Sisodia asked. He said the Central government should immediately postpone the exams and work on "alternative methods" of admission. "I appeal to the government to not be adamant on admission only through these exams. We are not at all saying that the year be declared as a zero academic year. We are not in favour of admitting students just like that as we will need quality doctors and engineers but banking upon only a three hour exam and expecting it to work like a magic wand in identifying talent, is a very conservative thought," he added. The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) will be conducted in September as scheduled, the Ministry of Education officials had said on Tuesday, amid a growing chorus for postponing the crucial tests in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. On Tuesday, Swedish teen climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg also threw her weight behind postponing the exams in view of the pandemic. "It's deeply unfair that students of India are asked to sit national exams during the Covid-19 pandemic and while millions have also been impacted by the extreme floods. Several opposition leaders in India including Congress' Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik and DMK President MK Stalin have demanded the exams be postponed. NEET and JEE exams can expose 28 lakh students to COVID-19, says Delhi CM Manish Sisodia

Six Ministers of opposition-ruled states moved the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> on Friday seeking review of its order permitting the Centre to conduct NEET and JEE entrance exams this year amid the persisting COVID-19 pandemic. The review plea has been filed by ministers from West Bengal (Moloy Ghatak), Jharkhand (Rameshwar Oraon), Rajasthan (Raghu Sharma), Chhattisgarh (Amarjeet Bhagat), Punjab (B S Sidhu) and Maharashtra (Uday Ravindra Sawant). The plea has been filed through advocate Sunil Fernandes. On Aug 17, the top court had refused to interfere with the conduct of medical and engineering entrance exams -- NEET and JEE scheduled to take place in September saying that life must go on and students can't lose a precious year due to the pandemic. The apex court had dismissed a plea by one Sayantan Biswas seeking direction to National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts both the NEET and <keyword id="1629686" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-Exams">JEE exams</keyword>, to postpone them and said that there was absolutely" no merit in the plea.

NEET-JEE exams: Ministers from six opposition states file a review plea in Supreme Court

In the several education reforms announced by Finance minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword>, he has proposed to establish a <keyword id="581232" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Testing-Agency">National Testing Agency</keyword> which will conduct all the academic entrance examinations in India. 
 
This will take away the burden from Central Board of Secondary Education and All India Council for Technical Education in terms of the administration work related to examinations.

While the JEE ranks second in the world with respect to its toughness, no other examination has been in the news as much as the NEET. In fact, the NEET was discontinued altogether back in 2013 before making a comeback three years later. Impact on the coaching industry Even with cut-offs being lowered, the exams increase in their level of competitiveness with each year as more and more applicants come forward. And, with more applicants coming on-board, the otherwise unorganised coaching industry is booming. In turn, the financial burden of pursuing <keyword id="3113818" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="engineering-in-India">engineering in India</keyword> is becoming an increasingly big issue for many aspirants as these coaching centres charge a bomb for their classes. A study by ASSOCHAM reveals that 70% of the parents, right from high-income families to the bottom stratum of the social hierarchy, are in the favor of spending hefty sums at these coaching institutes in the name of education. Reports <a href="https://ideasmakemarket.com/2013/09/aug-entry16-analysis-of-private-coaching-industry-in-india.html">indicate</a> that middle-class parents shell-out nearly one-third of their income so that their children can attend these private tuitions. But despite these private tuitions flourishing across the country, the reality of the situation remains unaltered. An exam like the JEE can only be cleared by 5,500 and more than 300,000 students appear for the exam. It’s that extreme level of competition that has led to the coaching industry showing a consistent growth of 35% over the past six years. And, that is exactly why free coaching for students will deal a big blow to the industry. That being said, the notion that private education is superior to public education still prevails in India. There might not be an actual loss for the coaching institution since the coaching centers don't cater to students who can’t afford tuition anyway. According to the Human Resource Development Ministry, the aim is to empower candidates from rural and semi-urban centres. Sisodia also noted that the ‘next generation board’ will not be a replacement of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The move aims to help students prepare for school and entrance examinations at the same time. The new board will have separate grades for all subjects, focussing on the career interest of the student. "You have four grades for subjects. For instance, divide science into four grades — science for doctors and engineers, science for sportsperson, science for humanities. If a child wants to become a journalist, he can take A grade language and maybe C grade of science so that if he has to cover science, he is well-versed with the basics," Sisodia explained. The move aims to provide a blended learning experience to students. As of now, the school curriculum helps them with only 10% of entrance examination syllabus, making them go for extra coaching classes. This comes on the back of massive opposition in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cbse-exam-registration-fee-hike-rolled-back/articleshow/70669606.cms">examination fee hikes</a> rolled out by CBSE. The board increased the exam registration fee for SC and ST students by 24 times, making it ₹1,200 from the existing ₹50. It also doubled the exam fee for class 10th and 12th students of general category to ₹1,500, which was ₹750. However, it rolled back the fee to ₹50 for the Scheduled Caste(SC)/ Scheduled Tribes (ST) students studying at government schools. DU offers a wide range of courses in the under graduation, graduation, doctoral levels besides many diploma courses across a diverse range of fields like humanities, science, commerce, management, law, and engineering. Admission process after the entrance examinations The results of the various entrance exams will be announced online in the month of July. For each of the categories, a separate merit list will be prepared by the university. The students are required to take a print out of the results for moving ahead with the subsequent admission process. For admission to the various merit-based UG courses, the university will announce the cutoff. The same will be published on the official website of the DU. The cut off will vary year on year depending on the demand of the seats in the given course. Candidates scoring the marks specified in the cut off can apply for admission. Scanned copies of the required documents will have to be uploaded online and once the admission is approved, the candidates will have to pay the admission fee online.

"Admit cards of NEET were available for download at 12 today. Over 4 lakh candidates have downloaded in first 3 hours," sources said. While the NEET is planned on September 13, engineering entrance exam <keyword id="1373000" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-main">JEE Main</keyword> is scheduled from September 1-6. Around 9.53 lakh candidates have registered for <keyword id="1115324" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="JEE-Mains">JEE-Mains</keyword> and 15.97 lakh students have registered for NEET. Amid rising clamour for postponement of the crucial exams in view of rising COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Education (<keyword id="343481" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Moe">MoE</keyword>) officials had reiterated on Tuesday that the exams will be conducted as per schedule in September. "The number of examination centres have also been increased from 570 to 660 (for JEE Main) and 2,546 to 3,843 (for NEET). While JEE-Mains is a computer-based test, NEET is a pen-paper test," the NTA said in a statement on Tuesday. "Additionally, in case of JEE-Mains, the number of shifts have been increased from the earlier 8 to 12, and the number of candidates per shift has been reduced from earlier 1.32 lakh to 85,000 now," it said. "In order to ensure proper social distancing inside the examination halls, the candidates will be seated in alternate seats in case of JEE-Mains. In case of NEET, the number of candidates per room has been reduced from 24 to 12," it added. For ensuring social distancing outside the examination hall, the entry and exit of candidates has been staggered. "Adequate arrangements have also been made outside the examination centers to enable candidates stand with adequate social distancing, while waiting. Candidates have also been issued an advisory guiding them about the 'Dos and Don'ts' for proper social distancing," the NTA said.
