An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in <keyword id="17605" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword>'s Srinagar on Monday, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in <keyword id="10091407" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="old-barzulla-area">Old Barzulla area</keyword> of the city here in the early hours of Monday after receiving specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said. Around 7:45 AM, when searches were underway, the militants opened on the forces, he said. The forces retaliated and an encounter ensued, he added. After the initial contact, there was a lull for half an hour and then the firing resumed, the official said. The operation is underway and further details are awaited, he said. Encounter breaks out between security forces and militants in Srinagar

Four suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists were killed and two policemen were injured in a gunbattle on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway after a truck carrying a group of freshly infiltrated militants was intercepted by security forces on the outskirts of Jammu city on Thursday, top police officials said. The terrorists had come to execute a "big plan" which has now been foiled, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu, Mukesh Singh, said. In Srinagar, IGP, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said the four terrorists were on their way to the Kashmir valley to disturb the District Development Council (DDC) polls scheduled later this month, as Pakistan has been trying to cause trouble in the political process. Giving details of the encounter, IGP Singh told a press conference in Jammu that during checking a truck was stopped at Ban toll plaza in Nagrota area at 5 am but the driver fled leaving behind the vehicle. CRPF and police personnel moved to search the vehicle and came under fire of the terrorists hiding in the truck.They retaliated resulting in an encounter. Other forces also joined resulting in a fierce gunbattle in which terrorists fired grenades and arms, he said. In the three-hour-long gunbattle, four terrorists were killed and two policemen were injured, he said, adding the policemen were out of danger. A huge cache of arms, ammunition and explosive material was recovered including 11 AK rifles, 3 pistols, 29 grenades and 6 UBGL grenades, he said. As per weapon recovery and past instances, it appears that they belong to JeM, he added. Speaking on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar, IGP Kumar said, "For the last few days, Pakistan has increased attempts to infiltrate militants into this side and to disturb the elections for which the process is on. In this context, Jammu Police and security forces have done a good job by neutralising four Pakistanis (militants). Their (militants') aim was to come to Kashmir to disturb the election process". He said there were apprehensions about militants targeting the elections, but the security forces were fully prepared to deal with the situation. "Whether there is an election or August 15 or January 26 or even a VIP visit, apprehensions are always there, but we are fully prepared... We are providing security to the candidates and they have started going to the field for campaigning from yesterday and there is nothing to fear," he said. Kumar, however, said providing security to each candidate contesting the polls, which begin on November 28, was difficult. "Providing security to each candidate is difficult. We are providing them collective security and they are being put up in secure areas. Whenever any candidate goes out for campaigning, we provide a double escort with him and secure the area for him to campaign," he said when pointed out that the candidates were alleging that they had not been provided security. DDC polls will be held from November 28 to December 22. Results will be declared on December 22. These polls will be the first major political activity in <keyword id="17605" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> since August 5 last year, when the Centre revoked the special status of the erstwhile state under Article 370 of the Constitution and split it into two Union territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Travel operators also understand the situations of people who had booked holidays in Kashmir but had to cancel their plans after the tension. While on one hand OYO Rooms is not charging any cancellation fees and is offering refunds to such customers, Cox &amp; Kings is offering them alternate plans to Himachal, Rajasthan and Andamans, while also providing 100% refunds. 
 
Even the airline companies like Air India, Jet Airways and Indigo had announced no charges on cancellation and rebooking for Srinagar-bound flights in July.

India had renewed its bid to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist following a terror attack in Pulwama that killed over 44 paramilitary policemen on February 15, 2019. India accused Masood Azhar of training militants and planning several terror attacks in the country including the 2001 Parliament attack and the recent Pulwama attack. A group of armed terrorists had entered the Parliament of India, opening fire and killing nine. The terrorists also died in the encounter. Even though both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha had been adjourned before the attack took place, many Indian politicians were still believed to have been inside the building when the terrorists entered. 2008 - Mumbai attack Azhar was also responsible for the ghastly attacks in posh hotels and public places in Mumbai in 2008 that left at least 174 people dead. The attacks which were a series of shooting and bombing attacks had lasted for four days in November 2008, in Mumbai’s prime locations. The attack is still considered to be one of the most deadly ones in the world. 2016 - Pathankot air base attack Masood Azhar was also held responsible for being the mastermind of the terror attack that took place at Pathankot air base, in India, on 2 January 2016. The attack led to a breakdown in India-Pakistan relation that has been undergoing tussles over Kashmir from years. The attack initially killed four attackers and two security personnel with one more security personnel dying from injuries hours after the attack. 2019 - Pulwama attack Forty-five paramilitary soldiers lost their lives in Pulwama, Kashmir on Thursday in a terror attack. The Pulwama attack took place around 3.15 p.m. on 14 February 2019 when a 'Fidayeen' bomber belonging to the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) terror outfit rammed an explosive-laden SUV into a bus carrying CRPF troopers in Lethpora area of Pulwama district on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway.
