It includes Rs 3,679 crore in subsidies and demand incentives for e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks, and other emerging electric vehicles. It is expected to support the deployment of 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses, providing a significant push to India's EV ecosystem. A critical aspect of the scheme is the introduction of e-vouchers for EV buyers. At the time of purchase, an Aadhaar-authenticated e-voucher will be generated, which will enable buyers to avail of demand incentives. Additionally, the scheme allocates Rs 500 crore for the deployment of e-ambulances, marking a new initiative to integrate electric vehicles into essential public services. Another Rs 4,391 crore has been earmarked for the procurement of 14,028 e-buses, with a demand aggregation process led by CESL in nine major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Intercity and interstate e-buses will also be supported in consultation with states. Furthermore, Rs 500 crore has been set aside to incentivize the adoption of e-trucks, a critical move given that trucks are one of the largest contributors to air pollution. The scheme encourages those with a scrapping certificate from <keyword id="19897457" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-road-transport" source="keywords">Ministry of Road Transport</keyword> and Highways-approved (MoRTH) vehicle scrapping centres to participate in this transition. With an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore, the scheme will support the installation of 22,100 fast chargers for four-wheelers, 1,800 fast chargers for e-buses, and 48,400 fast chargers for two- and three-wheelers. These chargers will be installed in cities with high EV penetration and along selected highways, making long-distance EV travel more viable.

It could be real, or a bluff to get nuclear-armed Israel to think twice.Sources in the Quds Force — a part of Iran's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-islamic-revolutionary-guard-corps-irgc-fleet-persian-gulf-2024-7">Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps</a> — allegedly told Kuwaiti newspaper <a target="_blank" href="https://www-aljarida-com.translate.goog/article/69721?_x_tr_sl=auto&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en-US">Al-Jarida</a> that "the Lebanese party now possesses bombs and missiles carrying explosive 'electromagnetic' warheads."The source said that "the bombs delivered to the party [Hezbollah] could be launched from fixed launchers, and some of them could be carried by drones to reach any point deep inside Israel." These weapons "could destroy all communications systems, including the electrical infrastructure, and thus halt all electronic systems that Israel relies on to coordinate its radars, aircraft, and forces in general."Nor would Israel's allies be immune should Israel attack Lebanon. The Americans, British and "and everyone who might try to cover up Israel's inability" would be targeted. The story was quickly picked up by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jns.org/iran-supplied-hezbollah-with-electromagnetic-pulse-weapons/">Israeli media</a>.Assessing the credibility of the Iranian EMP threat is difficult. If oil is Iran's top export, then its number two export is bluster to the world about supposedly cutting-edge military capabilities, including a <a target="_blank" href="https://archive.is/i7iGj">"stealth fighter"</a> unveiled in both 2013 and 2017 that was likely neither stealthy nor flyable. One reason for the posturing is to conceal the fact that Iran's conventional military equipment, such as jets, tanks and anti-aircraft missiles, are decrepit Cold War-era systems that would be hopelessly overmatched by US, Israeli and European weapons.However, Iran has spent years investing in the development of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.iranwatch.org/our-publications/weapon-program-background-report/history-irans-nuclear-program">nuclear weapons</a> (whether research has stopped as Iran claims, or continues as Israel and some Americans claim, is a matter of contentious debate). It has demonstrated genuine capabilities in developing a variety of ballistic missiles and drones, with Tehran exporting its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-iran-new-drone-may-cause-issues-ukraine-air-defenses-2024-1">Shahed-136 attack drone</a> to Russia. All of which suggests that Iran has the means to hit Israel and Europe, but it doesn't tell us whether the EMP warheads themselves exist.Or, what kind of EMP weapons they would be. When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nukes-electromagnetic-pulse-electronics-2017-5">electromagnetic pulse weapons</a> are mentioned in the news, or in apocalyptic movies and novels, they tend to be of the nuclear kind, generated either as a byproduct of nuclear weapons aimed at targets such as cities, or deliberately detonating nuclear weapons in space to generate EMP effects. Either way, the result would be the total disruption of the modern lifestyle as the spreading pulse fries circuits in the electrical grid, damages communications and other satellites, and disrupts global cell phone and GPS service.However, there are also non-nuclear EMP weapons (NNEMP), devices that can be carried in a suitcase or a missile's warhead, and that use explosives or high-power microwave emitters to generate a destructive pulse is similar that of a nuclear weapon, "except less energetic and of much shorter radius," explained the US government's EMP Task Force on National and Homeland Security in a 2021 <a target="_blank" href="https://emptaskforce.us/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/REPORTnnempTHREAT21A.pdf">report</a>."NNEMP weapons can be built relatively inexpensively using commercially available parts and design information available on the internet. EMP simulators that can be carried and operated by one man, and used as an NNEMP weapon, are available commercially." The 2015 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/what-iran-nuclear-deal">nuclear deal</a> Iran's nuclear weapons program in return for lifted sanctions. But the Trump administration <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/iran-nuclear-deal-explained">withdrew from the agreement</a> amid fears that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreement failed to address other issues, such as Iranian ballistic missiles and support for terrorism, and that Iran could have still covertly develop nuclear weapons. Since then, Iran has periodically <a target="_blank" href="https://www.armscontrol.org/act/2024-02/news/iran-accelerates-highly-enriched-uranium-production">enriched</a> its uranium stockpile, a necessary step in building nuclear weapons.However, an Iranian nuclear device — whether intended solely for EMP effects or not — could trigger a host of consequences, especially by inducing Israel to make good on its threat to launch a strike against Iranian nuclear facilities (and with American forces joining in, Jerusalem hopes). But a non-nuclear EMP weapon might enable Iran to sidestep any red lines."I think it is reasonable to assume that Iran has looked at these types of weapons, either through their own proliferation efforts or through their growing linkages and relationships with Russia, China and North Korea," retired Gen. Joseph Votel, former head of US Central Command, told Business Insider."I do believe they would look at EMP as a weapon that could be employed in 'gray zone' activities below the level of open conflict," said Votel, now a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, a Washington-based think tank. "Especially if it could be employed with more targeted results, like knocking out electronics in a specific geographic area."But this raises another question: would Iran give <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hezbollah-has-the-weapons-to-carry-out-threat-against-cyprus-2024-6">EMP weapons to Hezbollah</a>, its most important proxy? "Of all members of the so-called Axis of Resistance, Hezbollah would be a likely candidate to receive these types of weapons," Votel said. "But I have not seen any evidence that this is the case. Like most special capabilities, there is a level of training and sophistication that must accompany its deployment."Given the small size of Israel — about the size of New Jersey — it wouldn't take that many EMP devices to cause serious harm. At the least, a few non-nuclear EMP bombs over Northern Israel would hamper Israeli military and civil communications and facilitate a surprise Hezbollah attack. A large-scale attack, by contrast, could trigger enough outages to dent Israel's half-trillion-dollar annual economy.But this would also run the risk that Israel would treat it as an attack by weapons of mass destruction, similar to a nuclear or chemical weapons strike. Israel is believed to have almost 100 nuclear weapons, and Hezbollah EMP weapons could be viewed as a WMD strike by Iran, which already launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel in an April 2024 attack. It's also possible that Israel would reply in kind with its own EMP strikes that blackout southern Lebanon or even Beirut.The common denominator of Iranian security policy is to use proxies like Hezbollah to expand Iran's influence and undermine its enemies, but without triggering an attack on the Iranian homeland. Iran wants Israelis to worry that Hezbollah has a rare and powerful EMP weapon

The total <keyword id="6354973" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles" source="Orion">electric vehicles</keyword> sales for July 2023 were at 1,16,221 units, according to the monthly sales data from Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA). The electric two-wheelers sales during the previous month stood at 1,07,016 units, up 95.94 per cent, from 54,616 units sold in July last year, while the electric three-wheeler sales grew 18.18 per cent at 63,667 units, from 58,873 units year earlier, as per FADA. The commercial vehicle sales during the reporting month was also on an upward trajectory, growing two-fold on a year-on-year basis to 816 units, from 364 commercial vehicles sold in July 2023, it stated. Passenger vehicles, however, declined 2.92 per cent at 7,541 units in July, as against 7,768 units in the same month of last year, as per data. "The rising market share in the 2W and 3W <keyword id="22689146" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EV-segments" source="keywords">EV segments</keyword> for July 2024, with YoY growth rates of 95.94 per cent and 18.18 per cent respectively, and a market share of 7.4 per cent and 57.6 per cent, respectively for the month, is a clear indication of the growing acceptance and demand for electric vehicles in India," FADA President Manish Raj Singhania said. The PV segment, while showing a marginal year-on-year decline of 2.92 per cent, maintains a market share of 2.4 per cent, Singhania said, adding that the CV segment has shown remarkable growth with a year-on-year increase of 124.2 per cent and a current (July) market share of 1.02 per cent. The combination of attractive discounts and the anticipation of the discontinuation of the EMPS (Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme), despite its extension, has significantly boosted sales, he said. Announced by the Ministry of Heavy Industries in March, for a four months period-April 1,2024 to July 31,2024 to boost the adoption of EVs across the country with a total outlay of Rs 500 crore, the EMP scheme has now been extended by September 30, while the scheme's outlay has also been increased to Rs 778 crore. A large nuclear blast outside the atmosphere above the US could short out electric systems across the continent and cause airliners in flight to crash, according to the report.But according to experts, the idea of North Korea using an EMP to attack the US is <a href="http://www.armscontrolwonk.com/archive/206626/more-emp-nonsense/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ridiculous</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-electromagnetic-attack-wipe-out-90-percent-us-population-peter-vincent-pry-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">laughable</a>, and totally unlikely. They occur in nature, most frequently during lightning strikes, and can disrupt or destroy nearby electronics. However, nuclear EMPs can cover an entire continent and cripple tiny circuits inside modern electronics on a massive scale. The power grid, phone and internet lines, and other infrastructure that uses metal is also prone to effects that resemble those of a devastating <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-storm-risk-map-united-states-2016-9">geomagnetic storm</a>.Savvy readers called this to our attention after we published expert advice on why you should <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/survive-nuclear-attack-fallout-shelter-cars-2017-5">never get in a car</a> after a nuclear bomb is detonated. <a href="https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/ecpe/faculty/brooke-buddemeier/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Brooke Buddemeier</a>, a radiation expert at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, suggested sheltering deep within a building instead, and tuning in to a radio for instructions.But a reader named Taylor K. pointed out that "radios, computers, anything that use[s] electrical transmission to power itself will be effectively neutralized" by the bomb's EMP.He's correct - but fortunately only in certain situations.<h2>How electromagnetic pulse works</h2> Nuclear explosions don't make EMPs directly; the effect requires a couple of key ingredients.The first is a nuke's invisible burst of gamma rays, a form of light typically emitted by the "hottest and most energetic objects in the universe," <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/ems/12_gammarays">according to NASA</a>. A small fraction of a bomb's energetic yield - between 0.1% and 0.5% - is emitted as gamma rays. These slam into air molecules, knock off electrons, and accelerate the negatively charged particles to about 90% of the speed of light.Earth's magnetic field then shuttles many of these high-speed electrons toward the planet's poles in a corkscrew-like pattern. The electrons respond to this movement by letting off their newly acquired energy as a powerful soup of electromagnetic radiation, including radio waves.This is a nuclear electromagnetic pulse. "The energy from the EMP is received in such a very short time, however, that it produces a strong electric current which could damage the equipment. An equal amount of energy spread over a long period of time, as in conventional radio reception, would have no harmful effect."When EMP passes through metal objects like a phone, computer, or radio, they can "catch" this incredibly powerful pulse. This can generate a rogue current of electricity that moves through a modern device's tiny circuits and can disrupt or even destroy them. Power transmission or telecommunications equipment, meanwhile, can overload from the excess current, spark, and fail for miles around.If you've ever turned on a microwave oven and noticed your phone's Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection momentarily drop out, you've experienced disruptive electromagnetic waves - and had a very small taste of what could happen with an EMP.The intensity of a nuclear detonation's EMP is about 30,000 to 50,000 volts per meter - thousands of times greater than the one your microwave bleeds off.Fortunately, not all nuclear blasts are created equal when it comes to EMP.<h2>Why altitude is everything</h2>Nuclear detonations that occur dozens or hundreds of miles above Earth could have devastating consequences compared to those that happen on the ground.At a high elevation, gamma rays can more easily spread out, hitting many upper-atmosphere air molecules over a large area at once. The low density of air allows electrons to move more freely and maximize the intensity of an EMP.In fact, a 2008 report by the <a href="http://www.empcommission.org/">EMP Commission</a> suggests that the right nuclear device detonated at the right altitude could bathe the entire continental US in EMP, disrupting telecommunications and power grid infrastructure to "catastrophic" effect.But if an explosion were to occur closer to the ground, many of the gamma rays would slam into the earth. Those rays would have a harder time creating a large electric field that could generate widespread EMP. And the greater density of air wouldn't help, either.ShutterstockAn illustration of a nuclear blast in a city.The US government <a href="https://www.remm.nlm.gov/nuclearexplosion.htm">actively plans</a> for <a href="https://www.fema.gov/txt/media/factsheets/2009/npd_natl_plan_scenario.txt">15 disaster scenarios,</a> one of which is a terrorist-caused nuclear detonation that occurs close to the ground with a yield of about 10 kilotons - roughly 66% as powerful as the Hiroshima blast.This setup is the one we discussed with Buddemeier, and in that case he says the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nuclear-weapons-deadly-evolution-power-military-video-animation-2017-3">nuclear blast</a> itself would give you a lot more to worry about than bricked electronics or power loss."[T]here would be some localized EMP effects," he told Business Insider in an email, "but if you were close enough for you equipment to be damaged by EMP (within a couple miles), then you are also close enough to be significantly impacted by the blast wave."Lawrence Livermore National LaboratoryPut another way, you may not survive inside this zone, which can stretch a couple of miles in diameter. Nuclear bombs trigger a strange 'EMP' effect that could destroy your electronics - here's how it works

<ul class="summary-list"><li>CNN reported Russia is attempting to build a nuclear space weapon to destroy satellites.</li><li>Space security experts told Business Insider reports may be true, but it's not yet time to worry.</li></ul>Cryptic intelligence reports this week of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/white-house-says-new-russian-space-weapon-violates-nuclear-treaty-2024-2">Russia building an unspecified nuclear space weapon</a> stoked fear among Americans who worried escalating nuclear threats could mean global catastrophe is near.Experts on space security and the risks posed by nuclear weapons told Business Insider that rumors of Russia creating such a weapon are likely true but that it's not time to panic just yet.<a target="_blank" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/02/16/politics/russia-nuclear-space-weapon-intelligence/index.html">CNN,</a> citing anonymous officials familiar with the intelligence, reported that the device military officials have been briefed on is a sort of nuclear EMP designed to "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-special-forces-claim-destroyed-russia-tirada2-electronic-warfare-system-2024-1">destroy satellites</a> by creating a massive energy wave when detonated, potentially crippling a vast swath of the commercial and government satellites that the world below depends on to talk on cellphones, pay bills, and surf the internet."<a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2024/02/16/1231931372/jake-sullivan-russia-antisatellite-capability-navalny-death-ukraine-funding">NPR</a> reported the White House confirmed that Russia is working on a weapon that could threaten satellites in space but that nothing has been deployed.Deploying such a weapon would violate the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/outerspace#:~:text=The%201967%20Outer%20Space%20Treaty,exploration%20and%20use%20of%20space.">Outer Space Treaty of 1967,</a> which the Soviet Union and 113 other countries — including the US — signed. If the treaty were violated, it would warrant international retaliation.<h2>What would a space nuke do, exactly?</h2>However, Russia has been developing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/outerspace#:~:text=The%201967%20Outer%20Space%20Treaty,exploration%20and%20use%20of%20space.">anti-satellite weapons</a> for years, John Erath, senior policy director at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, told BI."They've tested one, they've destroyed one of their own satellites with them, and they've proven that they can do this," Erath said. "So these reports that have come out this week are not at all, in any way, surprising. It is certainly highly believable that they would be working on something new and more efficient as a way to take down American satellites. But that's where this gets a little bit complicated because a nuclear weapon isn't really that."Nuclear weapons, by their nature, are not precise, meaning even a relatively controlled blast would take out anything in its immediate vicinity — so Russia couldn't <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-lawmakers-briefed-russia-trying-put-nuclear-weapon-space-reports-2024-2">target American satellites</a> without risking its own, many of which operate at a similar orbit.The potential damage isn't negligible: In Starfish Prime, a weapons test in 1962 during the Cold War, a 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead was detonated at about 250 miles altitude — low earth orbit, which is between 62 miles altitude to 1,250 miles. Eventually, that test took out about a third of the active satellites in orbit due to the blast, its debris, and the radiation left in its wake.These days, that altitude is where the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/astronaut-spend-355-days-orbit-international-space-station-2022-9">International Space Station</a>, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-james-webb-vs-hubble-universe-pictures-show-huge-improvement-2022-7">Hubble Telescope</a>, and roughly 4,000 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-starlink-satellites-internet">SpaceX Starlink satellites</a> now operate.GPS satellites operate higher than that, in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elves-haldir-rohan-helms-deep-valinor-halls-of-mandos2023-12">middle Earth</a> orbit (about 12,500 miles up), and the US's billion-dollar intelligence-gathering satellites, the nuclear command control satellites, and many SATCOM satellites are in geostationary orbit, about 22,370 miles up.The current intelligence on the prospective <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-nuclear-powered-cruise-missile-unnecessary-not-totally-useless-expert-2023-10">Russian weapon</a> offers no indication that it would be anywhere near the size of the Starfish Prime warhead, nor what altitude it would be fired at, Victoria Samson, chief director of space security and stability at the Secure World Foundation, told BI."Our intelligence is good, but not omniscient," Samson said, referring to the United States' stance before it invaded Iraq over the development of weapons of mass destruction. "So I'm hoping intelligence is wrong on this. But we don't even know exactly what they think is happening just because of the classification, so a lot of it is just conjecture."The most significant risk at this time, both Samson and Erath noted, is the potential for such a weapon to increase international tension between the US and Russia and normalize <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/likely-us-nuclear-targets-2017-5">nuclear threats</a> as a replacement for diplomacy."If <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-reportedly-pushed-1-billion-nuclear-blackmail-to-israel-2018-7">nuclear blackmail</a> becomes normalized as a tool of international relations, then everybody's going to want to have the capability to do it," Erath said. "Ultimately, you don't make threats if you're not prepared to carry them out, and somebody at some point is going to want to carry one out."He added: "And a nuclear attack anywhere in the world is a very serious thing. It's not going to be the old Cold War mantra of destroying the world many times over; that's science fiction. But the effects in its place, both in the neighborhood and worldwide, will still be catastrophic."

Reports of Russia building nuclear space weapons have alarmed officials, but security experts aren't panicked — yet

For EMP, it will be the ultimate test whether people will be willing to pay top dollar for vegan food options in a restaurant tier that has been dominated by meat and seafood."I'm not going to lie, at times I'm up in the middle of the night, thinking about the risk we're taking abandoning dishes that once defined us," Humm said. "It's a tremendous challenge to create something as satisfying as the lavender honey glazed duck, or the butter poached lobster, recipes that we perfected." EMP has long been known for its luxurious meat and seafood dishes. Since the onset of the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword>, Humm told <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/eleven-madison-park-menu-vegan-meat-free-11620043140">The Wall Street Journal</a> that it was uncertain whether the restaurant would ever open its doors.In 2020, restaurants were among the industries that were hit the hardest. A <a href="https://ny.eater.com/2020/12/11/22166728/new-york-restaurant-closing-survey-pandemic">survey</a> from December by the National Restaurant Association found 54% would close by June if they did not receive government assistance. EMP was forced to lay off most of its staff in March, but Humm said the remaining chefs took those months to not only perfect vegan menu options but also give back to the community. EMP prepared meals for first responders at Elmhurst Hospital Center, in Queens, New York and then later for hungry people throughout the city. Humm plans to continue providing meals to the hungry. When the restaurant reopens, each tasting menu will cover the cost of five meals which will be delivered to food-insecure New Yorkers in collaboration with Rethink Food."Everyone who touches EMP - the staff, the guests, the purveyors - will help feed the city," Humm told The Journal.

We all know a nuclear blast on land brings devastating effects to the surrounding region. But what if humans detonated a nuclear bomb in space? Following is a transcript of the video. Imagine if we detonated a nuclear bomb in space? Actually, you don't have to.You can see it for yourself. That was Starfish Prime - the highest-altitude nuclear test in history. In 1962, the US government launched a 1.4 megaton bomb from Johnston Island. And detonated it 400 km above the Pacific - about as high as where the International Space Station orbits today.The detonation generated a giant fireball and created a burst of energy called an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, that expanded for over 1,000 kilometers.EMPs can cause a power surge, damaging electronic equipment in the process. And this one was no different. Across Hawaii, street lights went dark, telephones went down, and navigation and radar systems went out, not to mention the six, or so, satellites that failed.And all this came from a 1.4 megaton bomb. Tsar Bomba, which was the largest nuclear bomb that has ever been detonated, was 50 megatons.So what would happen if we detonated that above the United States?For starters, there's no atmosphere in space. So, there would be no mushroom-shaped cloud and no subsequent blast wave or mass destruction. Instead, you'd get a blinding fireball 4 times the size of Starfish Prime's. And if you looked directly at it within the first 10 seconds, you could permanently damage your eyes.Satellites wouldn't be safe either. Radiation from the explosion would fry the circuits of hundreds of instruments in low-earth orbit. Including communication satellites, military spy satellites, and even <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> telescopes like the Hubble.Plus, astronauts on board the International Space Station might be at risk of radiation poisoning.On the ground, however, you'd probably be fine. The detonation point would be far enough away that the high-energy radiation wouldn't reach you.But don't get too comfortable. Remember Starfish Prime's EMP? This time, the EMP would cover ⅓ of the entire United States, bringing down regional power grids and electronics like a lightning strike.But it's not all doom and gloom. The radiation would also interact with oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere and create a spectacular aurora near the detonation site, that would last for days.Now, let's be clear. This will probably never happen. Super-thermonuclear devices like the Tsar Bomba no longer exist. And even if they did, the Tsar Bomba weighed around 27,000 kilograms. There are only a couple of operational rockets in the world that could manage to lift something that heavy into space in the first place.So we're probably safe from that, anyway. Stavridis writes that he believes that while President Donald Trump's intended summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is well intentioned and "right." However, he notes that the chances of North Korea fully denuclearizing is low, and that the nuclear weapons in North Korea's possession are still extremely dangerous."What makes it so worrisome is not only the handful of nuclear weapons in the hands of a dictator who may be able to lob a few to Honolulu or even to Seattle," Stavridis writes. "We also need to consider North Korea's ability to deploy one or two nuclear weapons at altitude over the continental US in order to create a devastating burst of energy called an electromagnetic pulse."Stavridis writes that an EMP attack could involve three phases after the detonation of a nuclear weapon over the United States. He labels these waves as E1, E2, and E3. The E1 phase, is "a brief pulse that is particularly devastating to what are known as supervisory control and data acquisition systems," like water treatment facilities, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and manufacturing plants.E2 is a smaller burst immediately after E1, and could be as short as a microsecond. Despite its short time it could still wreak havoc because its targets would have already had their protection weakened by the E1 wave. The E3 pulse "could last several minutes and attack long-line systems such as the electric power grid by destroying substations across the nation." He also noted that there does not seem to be an agreement amongst analysts over how likely an EMP attack is, or how damaging it would be.Still, Stavridis recommends that the US harden its defenses against such an attack, first finding ways to protect its ballistic missiles so that they can be used even after an EMP, in order to deter any such attack.The US should also "increase its ballistic missile defenses against the 'single shot' attack that would use EMP," Stavridis writes.A North Korean EMP attack could come from either a ballistic missile or a satellite orbiting the Earth that has a nuclear warhead placed within it.
