The Ministry of Labour and Employment recently directed the Employees' Provident Fund Organization (<keyword id="19966712" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="EPFO" source="keywords">EPFO</keyword>) to ensure the activation of UAN (<keyword id="20789489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="universal-account-number" source="keywords">Universal Account Number</keyword>) via Aadhar-based OTP. The outreach is part of announcements made during the Union Budget 2024-25, which aim to maximize the net of beneficiaries under the Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme. The central government has already directed concerned ministries and departments to ensure that payment of all subsidies and incentives under all welfare schemes occurs via the Aadhar Payment Bridge and that 100% biometric Aadhar authentication is achieved. Notably, Aadhaar-based verification eliminates the need for producing multiple documents to prove one's identity. In the first stage, all employers must complete <keyword id="24089674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UAN-activation" source="keywords">UAN activation</keyword> through Aadhar-based OTP for all employees who've joined the company in the current financial year by November 30, 2024. Starting with their latest recruits, employers will have to finish this process for all their employees. As per the budget announcements, the government will implement 3 schemes for 'Employment Linked Incentive' as part of the Prime Minister's package. These will be based on enrollment in the EPFO and focus on recognition of first-time employees and support to employees and employers. The ELI Scheme aims to create over 2 crore jobs in the country in 2 years. This will significantly contribute to increasing employment opportunities and enhancing livelihoods. UAN activation provides employees with seamless access to EPFO's comprehensive online services, enabling them to efficiently manage their Provident Fund (PF) accounts, view and download PF passbooks, submit online claims for withdrawals, advances, or transfers, update personal details, and track claims in real-time. This allows employees 24/7 access to EPFO services from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need for physical visits to EPFO offices. For the uninitiated, UAN is a 12-digit number allotted to each member of EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organization). Think of UAN as a single-point number that brings together multiple member IDs that have been allocated to a particular employee. In September this year, EPFO added 18.81 lakh members, registering a 9.33% YoY growth.

EPFO to ensure UAN activation for employees through Aadhaar-based OTP

Union Minister of Labour and Employment <keyword id="19906409" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mansukh-mandaviya" source="keywords">Mansukh Mandaviya</keyword> and Chairperson of the Central Board of Trustees, EPF, have given the green light to the proposal for a Centralised <keyword id="23037839" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pension-Payment-System" source="keywords">Pension Payment System</keyword> (<keyword id="23039389" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CPPS" source="keywords">CPPS</keyword>) under the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995. According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, this initiative represents a major advancement by establishing a national-level centralised system, allowing pension disbursement through any bank or branch across India. Commenting on this development, Mandaviya stated, "The approval of the Centralised Pension Payment System (CPPS) marks a significant milestone in the modernization of the <keyword id="19966712" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPFO" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="EPFO" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="EPFO">EPFO</keyword>. By enabling pensioners to receive their pensions from any bank, any branch, anywhere in the country, this initiative addresses the long-standing challenges faced by pensioners and ensures a seamless and efficient disbursement mechanism." He added, "This is a crucial step in our ongoing efforts to transform the EPFO into a more robust, responsive, and tech-enabled organisation, committed to serving the needs of its members and pensioners better." The CPPS is expected to benefit over 7.8 million <keyword id="21992385" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPS-Pensioners" source="keywords">EPS pensioners</keyword> of EPFO. By leveraging advanced IT and banking technologies, it aims to provide a more efficient and user-friendly experience for pensioners. The CPPS will also ensure seamless pension disbursement across India, eliminating the need to transfer Pension Payment Orders (PPO) when a pensioner relocates or changes their bank or branch. This will be a significant relief for pensioners who move to their hometowns post-retirement. This facility will be launched on January 1, 2025, as part of EPFO's ongoing <keyword id="23015602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-Modernization" source="keywords">IT modernization</keyword> project, Centralised IT Enabled System (CITES 2.01). In the following phase, CPPS will enable a smooth transition to an <keyword id="20028363" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aadhaar-based-Payment-System" source="keywords">Aadhaar-based payment system</keyword> (ABPS). The CPPS marks a significant departure from the current decentralised pension disbursement system, where each EPFO Zonal/Regional Office maintains separate agreements with only 3-4 banks. Pensioners will no longer need to visit branches for verification at the start of their pension, as it will be credited immediately upon release. Additionally, EPFO anticipates a significant reduction in disbursement costs with the new system.

<ul><li>The Central Board of Employees' <keyword id="45028" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="provident-fund" source="Orion">Provident Fund</keyword> Organisation (<keyword id="6372438" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="epfo" source="Orion">EPFO</keyword>) has recommended an 8.15% interest rate to be credited on provident funds for the financial year 2022-23.</li><li>In March 2022, the government declared an 8.1% interest rate for more than its six crore members, which was the lowest since 1977-78.</li><li>The recommendation involves the distribution of more than ₹90,000 crore in the members' account on the total principal amount of about ₹11 lakh crore.</li></ul>The Central Board of Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has recommended an 8.15 per cent interest rate to be credited on provident funds for the financial year 2022-23. In March 2022, the government declared an 8.1 per cent interest rate for more than its six crore members, which was the lowest since 1977-78. The recommended interest rate for 2022-23 would be officially notified in the government gazette after approval of the Ministry of Finance, following which EPFO would credit the rate of interest into its subscribers' accounts. The recommendation involves the distribution of more than Rs 90,000 crore in the members' account on the total principal amount of about Rs 11 lakh crore. In 2021-22, the payment outgo and principal amounts were Rs 77,425 crore and Rs 9.56 lakh crore, respectively. "The total income recommended for being distributed is the highest to date. The growth in income and the principal amount is respectively more than 16 per cent and 15 per cent as compared to the last financial year 2021-22," the Ministry of Labour and Employment said in a release on Tuesday. EPFO is a social security organization responsible for providing social security benefits in the form of Provident, Pension and Insurance Funds to the organized workforce of the country. Separately, the provisional payroll data showed a total of 14.86 lakh net members were added in the month of January 2023. Out of the total members added during the month, around 7.77 lakh new members have come under the ambit of EPFO for the first time. Among the newly joined members, the highest enrolment is registered in the age group of 18-21 years with 2.26 lakh members, followed by the age group of 22-25 years with 2.06 lakh members. The age groups of 18-25 years constitute 55.52 per cent of the total of new members during the month of January. For the month of January 2023, it said 3.54 lakh members have exited the fold of EPFO. This is the lowest exit in the last four months. Retirement fund body <keyword id="6372438" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="epfo" source="Orion">EPFO</keyword> is likely to approve this month a proposal to enhance its investments in equites to up to 20 per cent of the investible deposits from the current limit of 15 per cent. The proposal is expected to be considered and approved during the EPFO trustees' meeting scheduled to be held on July 29 and 30, according to a source. At present, EPFO can investment 5 to 15 per cent of the investible deposits in equity or equity-related schemes. The proposal to revise the limit to 20 per cent has been vetted and approved by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation's (EPFO) advisory body Finance Audit and Investment Committee (FAIC). The recommendation of FAIC will be placed before the EPFO apex decision making body -- <keyword id="225704" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="central-board-of-trustees" source="Orion">Central Board of Trustees</keyword> (<keyword id="207775" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cbt" source="Orion">CBT</keyword>) -- for consideration and approval. "The Central Board of Trustees (CBT) headed by Union Labour Minister is likely to approve the recommendation of the FAIC for increasing the investment in equity and equity related scheme to 5-20 per cent from existing 5-15 per cent," the source said. In a written reply to Lok Sabha on Monday, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameshwar Teli said, "FIAC, a sub-committee of CBT, <keyword id="45027" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="epf" source="Orion">EPF</keyword>, has recommended for the proposal to increase investment in equity and related investments in category IV of the Pattern of Investment from 5-15 per cent to 5-20 per cent for consideration of CBT, EPF." EPFO had started investing in Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in August 2015, putting 5 per cent of its investible deposits in stock-linked products. It was raised to 15 per cent for the current fiscal. Trade unions have been opposing any investment in stock markets by EPFO as these are not backed by government guarantee. In the written reply, Teli also said the notional return on EPFO equity-related investments rose 16.27 per cent in 2021-22 from 14.67 per cent in 2020-21. The reply also showed that the notional rate of return on equity related investment of the the EPFO was in negative at (-) 8.29 per cent in 2019-20 due to the impact of COVID-19. In 2021-22, the minister said EPFO settled 2,88,15,498 claims for withdrawal of Rs 1,04,959.18 crore by the subscribers. EPFO had settled 2,33,90,550 claims for withdrawal of Rs 91,187.54 crore in 2020-21. The withdrawal amount was Rs 70,202.34 crore in 2019-20 under 1,28,77,354 claims settled by the EPFO. Retirement fund body EPFO could increase its equity investment limit to 20% from 15% earlier

One of the fundamental focuses of this <keyword id="19936553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget" source="keywords">budget</keyword> was to boost skill development, job creation, and <keyword id="19898684" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="employment" source="keywords">employment</keyword>, with youth being one of its four cornerstones, in addition to women, the poor, and farmers. And to this front, the FM announced major changes, particularly to benefit first-timers or new additions to the workforce. New entrants across all formal sectors will be eligible for receiving one month worth of wages in three instalments, with a ceiling of Rs 15,000. This is expected to benefit 210 lakh young people who have a maximum annual salary is Rs 1,00,000. <h2>New in the workforce? You'll be paid</h2>Both employers and employees will be incentivised by means of <keyword id="20587419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPFO-contributions" source="keywords">EPFO contributions</keyword> for the first 4 years of employment. What makes this scheme particularly lucrative for employees is that the government will reimburse EPFO contributions, Rs 3,000 per month, per additional employee, to the employer. For this purpose, all additional employees who have a maximum salary of Rs 1 lakh will be considered. In order to promote upskilling, the budget also promised loans of up to Rs 7.5 lakh, which will be backed by government' guarantee. It is estimated that this will benefit 25,000 students every year. Youngsters will also be able to get loans of up to Rs 10 lakh for pursuing higher education in domestic educational institutions. Apart from this, around 1,000 industrial training institutes will be upgraded, in order to train 20 lakh youth over the next 5 years. E-vouchers will be provided to 1 lakh students every year for interest subvention (bringing down the total interest cost) of up to 3% of the total loan amount. Says Krishnendu Chatterjee, VP and Business Head at TeamLease Services, "The government's commitment to employment and employability is clear with its Rs 1.48 lakh crore provision. This initiative, based on EPFO enrollment, focuses on recognizing first-time employees and includes direct benefit transfers of the first month's salary in three installments for salaries up to Rs 1 lakh". "Special emphasis is placed on the industrial and manufacturing sectors. Additionally, employers will receive incentives for job creation, with the government reimbursing up to Rs 3,000 per month for two years towards EPFO contributions for each new employee", he continued. <h2>Internship in top companies </h2>The budget also laid out a comprehensive scheme for assisting 1 crore young people to secure a 12-month internship in one of the top 500 companies of the country, over the next 5 years. For this, a monthly allowance of Rs 5,000 and a one-time help of Rs 6,000 will be provided. All training costs, along with 10% of the internship costs will be borne by the CSR funds of respective companies. Sunil Deshmukh, Chair of Global Board of Directors, Institute of Management Accountants noted that " with a Rs 2 lakh crore package for employment and skilling and Rs 1.48 lakh crores allocated to education, employment, and skill development, the budget comprehensively addresses job creation and skill enhancement. First-time workforce entrants will receive a direct transfer of up to ₹15,000, enhancing employability and stimulating economic growth. Overall, these measures demonstrate a strong commitment to economic reform and growth, creating a favorable tax environment that supports <keyword id="94495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Innovation" source="Orion">innovation</keyword>, investment, and long-term development.'

Union Budget 2024: More for new additions in workforce, internship in top 500 companies

<ul><li><keyword id="6372438" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="epfo" source="Orion">EPFO</keyword> has reduced interest rates to the lowest in more than 40 years for the current financial year.</li><li>The government body has slashed interest rates to 8.1% from 8.5% in the previous fiscal year.</li><li>Despite EPFO’s interest rates being the lowest in its history in decades, it is higher compared to many other <keyword id="1791040" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-saving-schemes" source="Orion">government saving schemes</keyword> currently. </li></ul>The popular retirement saving scheme followed by many corporations for its employees has slashed its interest rates to a 40-year low amid such a challenging environment. On Saturday, the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation’s (EPFO) announced that it has recommended to reduce the interest rate of the retirement fund to 8.1% from 8.5% last year. The rate will now be approved by the Finance Ministry. EPFO continues to give attractive interests rate compared to other government schemes

New Delhi, Retirement fund body EPFO on Thursday started crediting 8.5% rate of interest on employees' <keyword id="45028" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Provident-Fund">provident fund</keyword> (EPF) for 2019-20 for its over six crore members, a senior official said. A large number of members of the <keyword id="6423266" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="employees-provident-fund-organisation">Employees Provident Fund Organisation</keyword> (EPFO) would be able to see their updated EPF accounts with credit of 8.5 per cent rate of interest for 2019-20, a senior official told . The official further informed that the <keyword id="126926" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Labour-Ministry">labour ministry</keyword> has already sent the direction to credit the 8.5% interest on EPF for 2019-20 to the EPFO and the body has already started crediting interest into members account for the last fiscal. Labour Minster <keyword id="258830" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Santosh-Gangwar">Santosh Gangwar</keyword> said, "We had said that it would be our endeavour to provide 8.5% rate of interest on EPF for 2019-20. We have issued a notification to provide 8.5% rate of interest on EPF for 2019-20. We have also began the process to credit the said rate of interest into subscribers account." The minister also said that he has asked to ensure that all those members who are retiring on December 31, must get 8.5% rate of interest (for 2019-20). The process for capital gains for payment of 0.35% interest for 2019-20 has also been completed, he added. "It (8.5% interest) would comprise 8.15% from debt income and balance 0.35% (capital gain) from the sale of ETFs (exchange traded funds) subject to their redemption by 31st December, 2020," he said. Earlier in the day, Gangwar had approved the 8.5% rate for last fiscal after receiving the finance ministry's concurrence. Thereafter the direction was sent to the EPFO for crediting the interest on EPF into the subscribers' accounts. In March this year, the EPFO's apex decision making body <keyword id="225704" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Board-of-Trustees">Central Board of Trustees</keyword> headed by Gangwar had approved 8.5% interest rate on EPF for 2019-20. Earlier in September this year, the EPFO had decided to split 8.5% interest into two installments of 8.15% and 0.35% in its trustees meet headed by Gangwar. But later, the ministry decided to credit the entire 8.5% into subscribers' accounts in one go. EPFO begins crediting 8.5% interest for six crore people — to reflect in EPF accounts from new year

The labour ministry has implemented retirement fund body <keyword id="6372438" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="epfo">EPFO</keyword>'s <keyword id="68581" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Decision">decision</keyword> to restore pension commutation under the Employees' Pension Scheme, a move that will benefit 6.3 lakh pensioners. Pension commutation refers to part-withdrawal of fund in advance by a subscriber, who then gets reduced pension amount for 15 years. With the ministry's latest decision, such pensioners would receive their full pension after completion of 15 years. On February 20, the ministry notified the decision of the <keyword id="351142" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Employees-Provident-Fund-Organisation">Employees' Provident Fund Organisation</keyword> (EPFO) to restore pension of those who opted for commutation of their pension on or before September 25, 2008. In this regard, the Employees' Pension Scheme -- run by the EPFO -- has been amended. "The normal pension in respect of those members who availed the benefit of commutation of pension under the erstwhile paragraph 12A of this scheme, on or before the 25th day of September, 2008, shall be restored after completion of fifteen years from the date of such commutation," as per the notification. As many as 6.3 lakh pensioners would benefit from the decision. They had opted for commutation of their pension and got a lump sum at the time of retirement from their pension fund on or before September 25, 2008. The provision for pension commutation of pension was withdrawn by the EPFO. Now, the facility has been restored for all those who opted for it on or before September 25, 2008. Under the commutation, monthly pension used to be cut by one-third for the next 15 years and the reduced amount was given in lump sum. After 15 years, pensioners were entitled to get the full pension. In August 2019, the EPFO's apex decision-making body -- <keyword id="5190387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Board-of">Central Board of</keyword> Trustees headed by the labour minister -- approved the proposal to restore commutation of pension for 6.3 lakh pensioners who had opted for the benefit. An EPFO panel had recommended for amendment in EPS-95 (Employees' Pension Scheme 1995) for restoration of commuted value of pension to pensioners after 15 years of drawing commutation. Earlier, under EPS-95, members were allowed to commute one-third of their pension for 10 years, which was restored after 15 years. This facility is still available to certain categories of government employees.

There were speculations that the EPFO would lower interest on provident fund deposits for this fiscal (2020-21) from 8.5 per cent given in 2019-20 in view of more withdrawals and lesser contribution by members amid the coronavirus pandemic. In March last year, the EPFO had lowered interest rate on provident fund deposits to a seven-year low of 8.5 per cent for 2019-20, from 8.65 per cent in 2018-19. The <keyword id="45027" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="EPF">EPF</keyword> (<keyword id="114591" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Employees-Provident-Fund">Employees Provident Fund</keyword>) interest rate provided for 2019-20 was the lowest since 2012-13, when it was 8.5 per cent.
