New research has found that giving <keyword id="23157614" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-praise" source="keywords">public praise</keyword> to employees can boost overall office performance. Public praise has the potential to light a fire under others too, spurring them on to better work. And with remote work the new norm (if some tech companies don't have their way), this boost might be just what the digital doctor ordered. "One important challenge faced by many companies is how to motivate remote workers and keep them productive," explains Wen Wen, lead author of the study. "Our research gives practical advice on how to construct the right messages regarding peers and how to share them on <keyword id="19979951" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-platforms" source="keywords">digital platforms</keyword> in order to achieve a significant productivity gain." Wen and her colleagues examined a Chinese tech company where praise was doled out in public messages over a Slack-like app. Every time a sales rep closed a deal, human resources sent a message to the whole team, highlighting the success — with plenty of personal details and emojis to boot. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113238355" title="Can AI help companies boost employee well-being?" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>They found that productivity noticeably spiked when these approving messages were publicly sent, not just for the star salespeople, but for their colleagues too. Whether the message highlighted a worker’s effort or their natural abilities, others got inspired to step up. A simple 10% increase in praise-filled message intensity led employees to make roughly one more call per day. <h2>Praise efforts, not ability</h2>But here’s where things get even more interesting. Wen’s research showed that not all praise is created equal. When co-workers were praised for their effort (think “Wow, look at how hard they hustled to close that deal!”), everyone felt inspired. It didn’t matter if the person receiving the praise was socially close or distant from their colleagues — the impact was the same. Everyone worked a little harder. On the other hand, when the praise focused on someone’s ability (as in “They’re a sales superstar with unbeatable skills!”), the results were different. Close colleagues still felt inspired, but those further removed from the praised worker didn’t feel the same motivation. Maybe it’s because effort feels achievable, while abilities can seem like an unattainable gift. In short, people are more likely to push themselves when they see others praised for their hard work rather than innate talent. It’s the “If they can do it, so can I!” mindset in action. <h2>Why this matters more for remote workers</h2>With many teams now scattered across cities (or even continents), public praise becomes even more critical. In the office, employees might get an informal pat on the back or a shoutout during a meeting, but remote workers can easily feel invisible. In fact,<a href="https://hbr.org/2020/04/how-to-keep-your-team-motivated-remotely"> studies</a> have shown that it is quite far easier for workers to lose motivation when working from home, when compared to office-goers. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="113300695" title="Hybrid work boosts satisfaction and productivity and is here to stay, PwC says" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>This is where those digital platforms come in. Sharing public praise in all-company channels creates a virtual "hallway high-five" that helps remote workers feel seen and appreciated. And more importantly, it gives them something to strive for. "For a distributed workforce, managers should probably consider crafting effort-focused messages when sharing peer successes, instead of ability-focused messages,” Wen explains. “People can be influenced by effort-focused messages about peers whom they don't even know." My entire team was very shocked and worried. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-workers-blast-strict-rto-mandate-five-days-week-2024-9">Some people want to leave the company</a>. This is a betrayal to many people, especially those who were hired as <keyword id="21086606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="remote-workers" source="keywords">remote workers</keyword>, and it is eroding our trust. Before Amazon made the announcement this week, I already had a feeling that a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rto-faq-document-spells-out-new-rule-2024-9">stricter return-to-office mandate</a> was coming in 2025. That's because the leadership had made it very clear that this was the direction they were going to take through the last mandate, and in the last few months, things have become much stricter. I think the return to office policy is being used as a tool to carry out silent layoffs, as I've seen many bright engineers leave the company after the last mandate. People are definitely terrified about what this will mean for them. A few colleagues have contacted me and told me they are considering leaving the company, even going to lower-paying jobs. Having a flexible remote working policy did not have a big impact on productivity. If you create an atmosphere of growth and drive people, they will always deliver, regardless of where they work. I think this has been sufficient as long as people do their jobs to their best. I see the value in coming together occasionally and brainstorming, but outside that, it's unnecessary to always work from the office. The new mandate will be difficult for many people who moved away from the office during the pandemic, have childcare commitments, or experience social anxiety and are now forced to come into the office. Apart from the RTO announcement, I found out in the news that Amazon <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-fewer-managers-leaked-document-2024-9" target="_blank">plans to increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers</a> at least 15% by the end of next year's first quarter. It was a surprise because we already have a resource crunch. We have fewer people doing a lot more work, which has meant that I, and some other employees, have felt unhappy. Now with Amazon wanting to reduce the head count going forward, it will make things very difficult for employees. In many teams, there are between eight and 12 people managed by one person; ideally, it would be six people under one manager. This means some managers are already overburdened, which will only worsen. They are already frustrated and under a lot of stress, and the new RTO policy and job cut plans are only increasing the tension. A spokesperson for Amazon told Business Insider that they observed that being in the office together makes it easier for employees to learn, model, collaborate, and be better connected to one another. At a conservative estimate, it is going to employ five lakh people in the next three years through its vendors and components suppliers," a senior government officer told PTI. When contacted, Apple declined to comment on the projection. Apple has plans to scale up production in India by over five-fold to around USD 40 billion (about 3.32 lakh crore) in the next 4-5 years. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple led the India market with the highest revenue in 2023 for the first time, while Samsung topped the chart in terms of volume sales. The firm in its recent report said Apple surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in shipments and captured the top position in revenue in a calendar year for the first time. Apple's iPhone exports from India rose sharply to USD 12.1 billion in 2023-24 from USD 6.27 billion in 2022-23, representing a massive surge of nearly 100 per cent, according to trade intelligence platform The Trade Vision. The total smartphone exports from India surged to USD 16.5 billion in 2023-24, up from USD 12 billion in the preceding year. This surge underscores the broader impact of Apple's presence on the industry, driving growth and innovation in the Indian manufacturing ecosystem, the company stated. This internal survey, a part of Apple’s product development strategy, asks participants to evaluate existing smart glasses available on the market. Apple conducts internal survey amidst reports of developing smart glasses similar to Meta

We all know the pressure of meeting deadlines, but what if we told you that being late doesn’t just affect your calendar — it could actually tarnish how people see the quality of your <keyword id="6355058" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Work" source="Orion">work</keyword>? According to researchers, that’s exactly the case. They found that work submitted late is seen as lower in quality than the same work submitted on time or early, no matter how great it actually is. It turns out, missing a deadline can make you and your work seem less competent and trustworthy, all because of the subtle judgments deadlines trigger in other people. <h2>The deadly deadline dilemma</h2>Previous studies have focused on how deadlines affect employees’ productivity and stress levels, but lead researcher Sam Maglio’s team wanted to know how missing a deadline changes an outsider’s perception. To test this, the researchers conducted 18 different experiments with thousands of people, from managers and HR professionals to everyday folks, evaluating a wide range of creative and professional work. In the test, participants saw the same exact work samples — like photography, product pitches, news articles, and art — but they were told it was submitted either early, on time, or late. And guess what? The late submissions were consistently rated as lower quality, despite being identical to those submitted on time. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114883482" title="We heard from over 750 people who have recently struggled to find work. Here are their biggest frustrations with getting hired." mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Maglio explains, “Everyone saw the exact same art contest entry, school submission, or business proposal, but they couldn’t help but use their knowledge of when it came in to guide their evaluation of how good it was.” In other words, once people knew something was late, it was hard not to think less of it. <h2>Early birds don’t really get extra credit, but late birds do lose points</h2>Interestingly, turning in work early didn’t seem to earn extra praise. Evaluators ranked work that came in early and on time as equally good, which means there’s no major boost for those overachievers who submit work ahead of the deadline. But the real problem comes if you’re late — even by a little. In fact, it didn’t matter if the work was one day or one week late; the hit to quality ratings was the same. Late submissions were rated as poorly as work that objectively missed the mark, like not meeting word counts. And it turns out that advance warning doesn’t do much to soften the blow — one missed deadline still chipped away at the evaluator’s view of the employee’s competence and integrity, even if they were usually punctual. But here’s where it gets even trickier: evaluators didn’t just judge the work as poorer in quality — they also saw the latecomer as less reliable and were less likely to consider them for future tasks. One missed deadline could, in theory, limit your future opportunities to shine or earn promotions. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114915871" title="I did a remote internship while also side hustling at a national park. I worked all day but lived in a beautiful place." mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>The researchers even tested this with high school students in China, who were shown art entries with the submission dates marked as either early, on time, or late. Even though they were told to ignore everything except the artwork itself, the “late” pieces received lower grades. And that’s with peers evaluating peers, so it didn’t matter if a boss or manager had set the deadline — missing it still left a mark. <h2>Let your manager know!</h2>Luckily, not all hope is lost for late submitters. Maglio’s team found that the reason behind a missed deadline actually mattered. If the delay was due to uncontrollable events — like jury duty or a medical emergency — people cut the submitter more slack. The same was true if the deadline was a “soft” one rather than a hard cutoff, or if the work wasn’t particularly critical. “Communication around deadlines is vital. If it’s a hard, and not a soft, deadline, you as the manager should let your employees know,” Maglio explained. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know.” The findings of this study have been published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and can be accessed <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.obhdp.2024.104365">here</a>.

They said they've already found in recent days that stress over the election is causing their mind to sometimes wander for a few seconds when they're with a client. Gareffa said that's a sign that time off is needed."You can't be a life raft to anyone if you are drowning," they told Business Insider.<div type="image" title="AJ Gareffa" height="1364" width="1818" msid="114881702" hostid="261" sizebytes="130340"></div>Gareffa isn't alone in finding it harder to concentrate at work because of anxiety over the election.In a survey of 1,000 US managers conducted online in October by ResumeBuilder.com, 38% of respondents said the election had already hurt morale and productivity. Seven in 10 managers are worried tensions will worsen after the election.Felix Kim is the founder and CEO of Redrob, a startup that develops skills assessments designed to remove bias from hiring. He is concerned, in part, that the election might hurt team cohesion and said he's already seeing signs that the inescapable campaign news is wearing on workers."People, of course, are distracted," Kim said. He said he's planning for disruptions to his company's routines because, no matter who wins, "it's going to be a wild ride."Kim is considering telling the small company's workers who normally commute to its office in New York City several days a week to work remotely following the election, perhaps for as long as two weeks.<h2 id="e1c91231-8a67-4773-82bc-1feb19ee349c">The cost of tension</h2>The American Psychological Association found in an August survey that nearly seven in 10 US adults reported that the election was a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.apa.org/pubs/reports/stress-in-america/2024">"significant" source of stress</a>. That's similar to 2020 and above the 52% of adults who reported the same level of anxiety in 2016. The online survey, conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of the APA, involved about 3,300 adults in the US."The emotional drain of what we're all experiencing is going to lower productivity," Gabriella Kellerman, chief innovation officer at the virtual coaching platform BetterUp, told BI. How much we get done on the job can drop because of our own anxiety, and when working with others becomes fraught."As we get closer to the election, people are more likely to avoid coworkers based on feared political tension," Kellerman said.That friction, or fear of it, can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-politics-talking-discussions-work-rules-election-hr-trump-harris-2024-8">hurt team output</a>.Dorie Clark, a communication coach who teaches at Columbia Business School and is the author of "The Long Game," told BI that some workers have been preoccupied for months about the election. That's likely to increase on Election Day, and perhaps in its aftermath, she said.She said some workers will be busy hitting refresh on news and social sites, looking for insight into how the election might swing."What they're wanting is the one thing they can't have, which is control," Clark said.She said that for some workers, not knowing what their future — and that of the country —might look like because of the vote can produce major stress."This is not dissimilar to a patient who has acute symptoms but no diagnosis," Clark said.<h2 id="9ea62c69-07ec-4729-82df-cad4d8874b26">Bad behavior can be contagious</h2>Christine Porath, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School and author of "Mastering Community," told BI that the toxicity of a divisive election could seep into our workdays as people are exposed to rudeness and bad behavior — even if they're only learning about it secondhand."It's very distracting and hijacks our attention and focus. It leads us to perform worse, be far less creative, less helpful to others, and unfortunately, it is contagious," she said.Porath said that when incivility infiltrates the workplace, it primes employees to act or think dysfunctionally. Those employees, in turn, can spread that negativity to their coworkers.The Society for Human Resource Management reports that politics is a "top driver" of incivility on the job. Discourtesy, the organization said, costs US organizations a collective $2.17 billion every day due to absenteeism and reduced productivity.Yet it's not all bad news. In research Porath conducted several years ago involving six organizations in different industries, she found that workers who felt that they were thriving in their jobs were better able to repel the type of negativity — like that emanating from a contentious election — that could lead them to become distracted.<h2 id="8d93d8a3-d2e2-42f2-8755-79681440a7c4">What managers can do</h2>Clark, the communication coach, said managers shouldn't make assumptions about their teams' political leanings but should instead be sensitive to employees' emotions.Yet that doesn't mean being overly indulgent or letting workers focus too long on issues that aren't germane to the business."You might feel sad about who wins or loses a presidential election, but this is very different than, say, the death of a relative," Clark said.Despite the widespread election worries, not every indicator signals that the vexing political climate is throwing off most workers. In an online survey of about 900 US workers conducted from late August to mid-September, the research firm Gartner found that while 48% of employees said they were anxious about who would win the election, two-thirds of respondents said those concerns hadn't dented their productivity at work.Gareffa, the therapist in Michigan, doesn't want to risk being overly distracted when they're with clients. Gareffa plans to use the week off from work to spend time with family and perhaps focus on a hobby like drawing or sculpting. They said their clients have been understanding about the planned time away."It's been a good kind of example of how to take care of yourself without just running away from responsibilities or just pumping the brakes on life," Gareffa said.
