The course costs around ₹30 lakh for the five-year course and unlike many others, her father is bankrolling it, without her having to take a loan. Yet, in the last few months a lot has changed. Europe is in the throes of a possible recession, the value of Indian rupee is depreciating and more importantly, inflation in the continent is also impacting budgeted expenses. “Looks like I might have to take a loan after all because my living expenses will change drastically. I have spoken to students who live there and they all tell the same story,” Shewale sighs. Her story is similar to a number of Indian <keyword id="15304331" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="students-wanting-to-study-abroad" source="Orion">students wanting to study abroad</keyword> but those who have already taken admission this year have it worse – on rupee depreciation alone. Since the beginning of 2022, the rupee has fallen more than 7% against the dollar. <div type="image" title="rupee" height="900" width="1200" msid="94974075" hostid="261" sizebytes="49035"></div> ‘Loans could balloon by ₹3.5-5 lakh’ If a student had taken a loan in March this year, when rupee was at 75 against the dollar, it would add a few lakh into the loan, as per Ashwini Kumar, VP at MPower Financing, a public benefit corporation that helps students to study abroad. For every dollar of the loan, an extra ₹7 is added and it would inflate the loan and the interest as well. “On an average, a loan could get extended by around ₹3.5-5 lakh depending on the rupee exchange value at the time of the loan,” Kumar told Business Insider India. The problems don’t end there. Apart from tuition costs, Indian students also have to support themselves there and living expenses are going up as well. The Eurozone inflation is being <a href="https://www.euronews.com/next/2022/09/30/record-inflation-which-country-in-europe-has-been-worst-hit-and-how-do-they-compare">pegged at 10%, as per estimates</a>. Inflation in the US too has recently <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/us/us-inflation-soars-to-8-2-per-cent-highest-in-40-years/articleshow/94842348.cms">hit a 40-year high</a>, messing with economics of students abroad. Most Indian students head to these destinations. The third part of the triple whammy is from rising interest rates. This financial year, the Indian central bank raised repo rates four times and the base rates now stand at 5.9%. More interest rate hikes are expected in the near term and most experts see base rates stabilising once it’s around 6-6.5%. “Loans linked to MCLR and BPLR will see a gradual increase in the interest rate in the near future. The EMIs of current and future borrowers will rise due to this,” said Ankit Mehra, CEO and co-founder of GyanDhan, an education loan market place. Moreover, the psychological impact of a possible depreciation in rupee will also largely play on the minds of US and Europe-bound students and their parents, said Kumar. Students still eye foreign degrees Studying abroad is going to become much more expensive. However, experts say that this is not discouraging students from pursuing their higher education dreams. Shewale too intends to absorb the extra costs but does not intend to change her plans. “The return on investment in terms of quality of education, career growth, international exposure, skills developed, and networking has more intrinsic worth,” said Mehra. Kumar too says that students who are planning to go abroad this year and the next, have been planning it two years before, and it’s unlikely that the road bumps will change their plans, though some may choose to delay it. “There are a few sections of society wherein parents are managing the EMIs on the border, which is due to get affected. A student who had to arrange ₹25 lakh for their overseas education prior to the rate hike will find it difficult to arrange for additional funds given the parental income has not increased proportionally to the hike in the interest rates,” said Mehra. And believes that it can gain Gross Merchandise Volume of ₹20,000 crore in 2019-20, from education alone. The digital payments company is not just offering services for payments but many more to help students. “Right from providing details on 25,000 colleges, schools, courses and exams, our bouquet of services will include – payments (in-app and in educational centres), commerce (coaching, scholarships, test preparation, admission forms etc.) and financial services (student insurance, educational loans, easy EMI, and banking),” said Vineet Kaul, Senior Vice President - Paytm. To enable this, the company has partnered with Railway Recruitment Board, Maharashtra Public Service Commission, National Testing Agency, Indian Navy, Amity, VIT, Manipal, AKTU, Army Public Schools, Delhi Public Schools, Delhi University, IITs, IIMs, NITs, Aligarh Muslim University, AIMA, ICAI, Narayana Group, Career Launcher, Made Easy, Career360 and several others. Lenders charge anywhere from 11% - 24% p.a., depending on your income, credit score and employer. Their tenures can go up to 5 years while the disbursal is usually completed within seven days. Existing personal loan borrowers can also try the personal loan balance transfer option to transfer their loan to another lender at lower interest rate, longer tenure while availing extra funds to pay off other costlier debts. Loan against property: Loan against property (LAP) is granted against the mortgage of residential and commercial properties. Their interest rates can be as low as 9.4% p.a. while the loan tenure can go up to 15 years. The loan amount too can be as high as Rs 7.5 crore, usually ranging between 50 to 65% of your property value. Your age and repayment capacity too would be considered while sanctioning your loan amount. Thus, for those who own a property but don't have an existing home loan, LAP would be the best debt consolidation option considering their long tenure, low-interest rates and higher loan amount. Top-up loan: A top-up loan is offered to existing home loan borrowers only. Although their lending rates are usually 100 bps higher than home loan rates, some lenders charge the same interest rates as home loans. This makes them probably the cheapest credit option for existing home loan borrowers. The loan amount can go up to Rs 15 lakh depending on your repayment capacity and property value while the loan tenure can go up to 20 years depending on the residual tenure of your original home loan. Loan against securities: Loan against securities is an overdraft facility set against the value of your securities. Lenders lend up to 85% of the value of your securities depending on their type. Interest rates usually range upwards of 11% p.a. on the amount drawn. It is suitable for those with sizeable long-term investments in the form of shares, equity mutual funds, insurance policies, etc. as they can utilise them for low-cost funds without compromising their long-term goal. Step 4: Check your credit report before making loan application Lenders usually consider credit scores of 750 and above as good ones. Checking your credit report before making the loan application will allow you to know your current credit score, detect errors or frauds in your credit report and take required corrective actions. Fetching your credit report from online lending marketplaces and credit bureaus will also help in getting customised loan offers through them on the basis of your credit score. Compare all loan options available to you from a lending marketplace to get the best deal. Step 5: Prioritise prepayments of older loans Once you have availed the new loan, prefer paying off unsecured loans like personal loans, loan against credit card, etc. before paying secured ones like home loans, car loans, etc. Unsecured loans not only have higher interest rates, prepaying them off first will improve your credit mix, i.e. ratio of secured and unsecured loans, which will improve your credit score.  SBI has further slashed interest rates by 0.15 per cent for its home loans up to Rs 75 lakh, while <keyword id="6653" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> is offering overdraft facility along with the home loan. 
 SBI Home Loans are cheapest in the market and provide an excellent opportunity for both new home buyers as well as those who wish to switch over their home loan to SBI to save on <keyword id="6357050" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="EMI">EMI</keyword>, the bank said in a statement. 
 
SBI home loan would be available at 9.15 percent while women borrower will get at 9.10 percent. 
 
Another market major ICICI Bank is offering the salaried having an account with it, credit from Rs 5 lakh going up to Rs 1 crore against property owned by them. 
 The product, 'ICICI <keyword id="3805058" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-home-overdraft">Bank Home Overdraft</keyword>', will offer dual advantage of a term loan as well as an overdraft facility, the bank said in a statement. 
 
"While the term loan provides customers with quick funds for immediate needs, the overdraft facility offers them the flexibility to access funds instantly for expenses, as and when required," it said. 
 
Those buying the overdraft loan from the bank would be able to utilise the funds for their personal needs such as for education, medical treatment, home renovation, marriage and overseas travel among others. 
 
Beginning from a minimum of Rs 5 lakh to a maximum of Rs 1 crore, customers will have the facility to avail a minimum 10 per cent of the total amount as term loan and maximum 90 per cent as an overdraft. 
 
ICICI Bank said the interest on term loan would be charged as per the equated monthly instalment, while on the overdraft the charges will be only on the utilised amount for the period the funds are used. 
 
On a Home Loan of Rs 50 lakh, reduction in interest rate by 0.15 percent by SBI will help a home buyer to save Rs 542 per month and approximately Rs 2 lakh during the loan tenure of 30 years, SBI said. 
 
According to SBI, the value of the savings on EMI of Rs 542 per month, if invested in a recurring deposit, will be approximately Rs 6 lakh at the end of the loan tenure. offers overdraft

	2) Have you factored in the other costs? 
	 
	Like many other products, a house also has ancillary costs that need to be paid for. The price advertised in the media is usually the base price of the property. The add-ons are usually kept hidden till you sit down with your cheque book. Many builders will slip in charges for facilities that you thought were free with the property. 
	 
	3) Have you done a thorough rent versus buy analysis? 
	 The old saying that "fools build houses and wise men live in them" has been proved incorrect several times in the past. 	4) Will the value of the property rise faster than the interest on loan? 
	 
	In the early 2000s, when home loans were available at 6-7% and property prices were galloping at 20-25%, it made eminent sense to invest in an upcoming apartment project. You could book two properties and sell one of them after a few years for a profit big enough to repay the entire loan taken for the first property. Those days are now history. Property prices are now appreciating at a slower pace. In some markets, such as Noida and Greater Noida in the National Capital Region, prices have even come down in the past 12-18 months. 
	 
	5) Will this purchase force you to postpone other major goals? 
	 
	Stagnant property prices and high EMIs are not the only problems that potential home buyers should be wary of. Their home buying plans can have serious implications on other financial goals, such as saving for their children's education and marriage and their retirement. 
	 
	6) Do you have a contingency fund? 
	 
	Real estate is not a liquid investment. You can't sell it at short notice, nor break it up into parts. Invest in it only if you do not need that money at short notice. This also means one must have an emergency fund to take care of 3-6 months' expenses. If you plan to use your emergency funds to pay the downpayment, you could be making a big mistake. Delays can be particularly debilitating if the buyer had expected EMIs to replace the monthly rent payment. If the project gets delayed, they have to fork out money for both. New Delhi, The <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> Friday directed the government to ensure that all steps be taken to implement its decision to forego interest on eight specified <keyword id="10342500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="categories-of-loans">categories of loans</keyword> paid upto ₹2 crore in view of the coronavirus pandemic. A bench headed by Justice <keyword id="247734" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok-Bhushan">Ashok Bhushan</keyword> said the COVID-19 pandemic has not only caused serious threat to the health of the people but has also cast its shadow on the <keyword id="47276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-growth">economic growth</keyword> of the country as well as other countries in the entire world. The eight categories of loans are MSME (Micro, Small &amp; Medium Enterprises), Education, Housing, Consumer durable, Credit card, Automobile, Personal and Consumption. "Due to lockdown imposed by <keyword id="1576501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Government-of-India">the Government of India</keyword> in exercise of powers under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, there can be no denial that most of the businesses including private sector as well as public sector has been adversely affected. "For several months, large number of industries were not allowed to function and exemptions were granted only to few of the industries to run and carry on its activities, which were found essential and necessary in the fact situation," the bench, also comprising Justices R S Reddy and M R Shah, said. Although, gradually, due to Unlock- 1, 2 and 3, the industries and other business activities have been restored and the economy of the country is on track, although at a slow pace, it said. The apex court noted that moratorium period as granted by the Reserve Bank of India have continued from March 3 to August 31 for the period of six months. It noted the submission of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that measures taken by the Centre in exercise of jurisdiction under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to mitigate the hardships and miseries of few sectors. "As noted above, senior advocate Rajiv Dutta, counsel for the petitioner has expressed its satisfaction on the measures taken by the Government of India redressing grievances of the petitioner to the extent as noted above. "We dispose of the present writ petition with directions to the respondents to ensure that all steps be taken to implement the decision... so that benefit as contemplated by the Government of India percolates to those for whom financial benefits have been envisaged and extended," it said. The RBI had on March 27 issued the circular which allowed lending institutions to grant a moratorium on payment of instalments of term loans falling due between March 1, 2020, and May 31, 2020, due to the pandemic. Later, the moratorium was extended till August 31 this year. The pleas pertained to charging of interest on interest by banks on EMIs which have not been paid by borrowers after availing the loan moratorium scheme of RBI during March 1 to August 31. The top court's judgement came on a PIL filed by Agra resident Gajendra Sharma seeking directions to declare the notification dated March 27, 2020 issued by Reserve Bank of India as ultra vires to the extent it charges interest on the loan amount during the moratorium period.
