After conducting in-depth tests on 1532 mobile towers, experts on Thursday said that low-powered, non-ionizing radiation emitted from the cell towers has no ill effects on human health.<br /><br />Officials said that the North East Licensed Service Area (NE-LSA) of the Department of Telecommunications has tested 1532 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) from April to November this year and all the mobile towers have been found compliant as per DoT norms on electric and magnetic fields radiation. <br /><br />While addressing a webinar on electromagnetic radiations from mobile towers, Dr Tushar <keyword id="15608804" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kant-joshi" source="Orion">Kant Joshi</keyword>, Advisor, Ministry of Health and Director, OEM Programme, Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health, assured that "it has been found that low powered, non-ionizing radiation emitted from cell towers have no ill effects on human health"<br /><br />Referring to the scientific research, <keyword id="6157" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="joshi" source="Orion">Joshi</keyword> said that it becomes extremely essential to address the spread of misinformation and provide an authentic view of health concerns related to mobile towers. It is also important to be informed that no scientific or medical evidence is available to corroborate the argument used against mobile towers, he pointed out.<br /><br />Shillong-based Senior Deputy Director General of the North-East LSA Ravi <keyword id="6394938" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="goel" source="Orion">Goel</keyword> highlighted the need for telecom services in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> and pressed on the challenges faced by the stakeholders of the industry.<br /><br />"We are venturing into an age of hyper-connectivity where the government is making every effort to densify telecom infrastructure and telecom towers as these are the backbone of Indian mobile communications.<br /><br />"In order to magnify the efforts, it is important that the fear surrounding the theories about ill effects of <keyword id="874194" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="emf" source="Orion">EMF</keyword> radiations from mobile towers are addressed factually to dispel such misconceptions," Goel stated. <br /><br />Deputy Director General of North-East LSA (Compliance) A.K.Jain said that the government has adopted one of the most stringent emission standards for mobile towers in the world. He said: "We follow norms that are 10 times stricter than what has been prescribed by ICNIRP and recommended by WHO globally. DoT continuously monitors the EMF emission levels from towers across India and ensures compliance with the stipulated emission norms throughout the country."<br /><br />The experts in the awareness event also mentioned that unscrupulous companies, agencies and individuals cheat the public by promising them hefty monthly rental payments for the installation of mobile towers. Such fraudsters ask the public to deposit money in their personal, and companies' accounts under various names against security deposits, application fees, registration charges, stamp duty, and government tax under Telecom Act among others. Further, it was also highlighted that use of telecom services through SIM cards and signals of foreign service providers in Indian Territory violates the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 and persons involved in such types of acts are liable to punishment as per the act and other acts and rules. <br /><br />An official statement said that India holds the potential to lead the telecommunications technology sector across the globe. Radiation emitted from mobile towers has no ill effects on human health: Experts

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The US Navy deployed a mobile hospital to a cave system in <keyword id="12154095" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="norway" source="Orion">Norway</keyword> in October.</li><li>The US Navy and Marine Corps have used Norway's caves to store weapons and equipment for decades.</li></ul><p>The US Navy set up a new facility in a cave system in northern Norway in October, reflecting the increased focus that the US and its <keyword id="11893896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="nato" source="Orion">NATO</keyword> allies have put on the alliance's northern borders with <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword>.</p><p>This month, the US Navy announced that Naval Forces Europe and US Navy Expeditionary Medical Support Command had delivered an Expeditionary Medical Facility to a cave system near Bogen Bay in northern Norway, some 100 miles north of the <keyword id="11905238" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="arctic" source="Orion">Arctic</keyword> Circle.</p><p>EMFs have many of the same capabilities as a modern hospital and can be deployed on short notice, according to Lt. Cmdr. Michael Lucas, director of operations for US Navy Expeditionary Medical Support Command.</p><p><keyword id="12420495" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="norwegian-caves" source="Orion">Norwegian caves</keyword> are "an excellent storage solution" that allow for quickly stowing and deploying the EMF, and Civil Engineering Support Equipment already in them will support the EMF, Lucas said in a press release.</p><div type="image" title="Navy hospital cave in Norway" height="640" width="960" msid="87379781" hostid="261"></div><p>The 150-bed mobile hospital can operate within Norway's caves or be moved to respond to an emergency elsewhere in Europe.</p><p>It contains 20 intensive-care beds, 130 acute-care beds, four operating rooms, an emergency room, and a laboratory. It can also conduct X-rays and CT scans, in addition to storing 300 units of blood.</p><p>The facility brings an enhanced medical capability to northern Europe that provides "increased opportunities to develop shared processes and procedures with NATO allies and partners in the region," the Navy said in the release.</p><p>Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Skrypek, NAVEUR's force medical planner, said the project took three years and that the move allowed for training on medical and logistical processes in the Arctic, "which improves interoperability with NATO allies and partners."</p><p>Lt. Gen. Yngve Odlo, Norway's Joint Headquarters commander, called the deployment "a clear demonstration" of US commitment to Norway and to Europe.</p><div type="image" title="Navy hospital cave in Norway" height="640" width="960" msid="87379783" hostid="261"></div><p>Moving the facility's components from Blount Island Command in Florida to the caves in Norway required 195 containers and 165 pieces of Civil Engineering Support Equipment.</p><p>The move itself took about a month, but the time it takes to deploy it elsewhere in Europe will depend on where it needs to go and what it's needed to do, US Naval Forces Europe told Insider in an email.</p><p>The US Navy previously based two 500-bed fleet hospitals in Bogen Bay. Those facilities were deployed during the Gulf War and again during the invasion of Iraq, after which they were sent back to the US for repair. (EMFs replaced fleet hospitals in 2007).</p><p>The <keyword id="11940053" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="us-marine-corps" source="Orion">US Marine Corps</keyword> has stored equipment in caves in Norway since the early 1980s. Much of it was withdrawn for the Iraq War, but those stocks were later rebuilt and in recent years have supported exercises around Europe.</p><p>The Corps' force redesign likely means some heavy equipment stored <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-force-redesign-means-taking-tanks-from-norway-caves-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in those caves will be decommissioned</a>. The Corps also said recently that it will reduce the rotational deployments it has conducted in Norway since 2017.</p><div type="image" title="Marine Corps Norway cave" height="576" width="867" msid="87379785" hostid="261"></div><p>Other moves indicate the US will be spending more time in Norway, however.</p><p>The US Navy and Air Force presence there <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-russia-arctic-activity-amid-us-changes-europe-military-presence-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has increased</a> in recent months, including port calls and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-air-force-b1b-bombers-on-historic-deployment-to-norway-2021-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a historic deployment</a> by B-1B bombers earlier this year. US Navy commanders have also trained <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-bombers-navy-ships-learning-how-to-fight-in-arctic-2021-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to sail in fjords</a> during exchanges with Norway's navy.</p><p>A deal signed this spring will <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/norway-agreement-allows-us-to-build-on-bases-near-russia-2021-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allow the US to build facilities on Norwegian bases</a>, including at Evenes air station and Ramsund naval station, both of which are near Bogen Bay.</p><p>The activity comes amid heightened tension with Russia. Russia's military activity in the Arctic has concerned Norway and its NATO allies, which have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/increasing-arctic-military-activity-reduces-us-russia-diplomacy-options-2021-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stepped up their own activity in that increasingly accessible region</a>.</p><p>A Russian invasion of northern Norway <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marine-corps-force-redesign-means-taking-tanks-from-norway-caves-2020-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">is seen as unlikely</a>, but the EMF deployment is part of the response to what US officials call strategic competition in the region and around the world.</p><p>"In this era of great-power competition, distributing our capabilities around the globe drives down risk," Rear Adm. Michael Curran, director of readiness and logistics for US Naval Forces Europe, said in the release.</p>

Police shot and killed the 53-year-old man after he left his house and began allegedly firing a shotgun at police officers, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/OCSOMichigan/posts/pfbid0Y5RAR5MD1HqdeSCXRvKMd6MkZ99n1CybnEqJpQ8EntVW3iBQytzovmZpzLysdQJfl">according to a statement from the Oakland County, Michigan Sheriff's office</a>.</p><p>Police were alerted of the incident after the injured daughter, Rachel Lanis, dialed 911 just after 4am on Sunday and said her father Igor Lanis had shot her, according to the statement from the sheriff's office.</p><p>Rebecca Lanis, another daughter who was not at the house during the shooting, wrote a Reddit post about the incident on r/QAnonCasualties, a hub for people to discuss family members and friends who have fallen down the QAnon rabbit hole. (QAnon refers to a web of baseless conspiracy theories that began with the false claim that former President Donald Trump was crusading against a global cabal of deep state human traffickers.)</p><p>In the post — published on the day of the shooting and titled "My Qdad snapped and killed my family this morning." — Rebecca described how her dad began reading conspiracy theories about QAnon, vaccines, and election rigging after Trump lost the 2020 election. She wrote that it kept getting worse, and "he verbally snapped at us a few times" though there was never any physical harm.</p><p>In a series of comments, Rebecca described how she "slowly started distancing" herself from her father as he "would spend all day and night reading stuff on his phone and laptop and would get really pissy over the smallest things," she wrote. "His carefree and fun persona was gone. He started talking about 5g and emfs being bad, and modern medicine being a sham."</p><p>Despite the warning signs, she wrote, "Sadly, my sister and mother were too loving to believe that he could actually lash out like this."</p><p>In the main post, she described how the incident allegedly unfolded.</p><p>"At around 4 AM on September 11, he had an argument with my mother and he decided to take our guns and shoot her, my dog and my sister," Rebecca wrote. "My mother succumbed to her wounds and my sister is in the hospital right now."</p><p>The statement from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office states that a 25-year-old female victim in the shooting received emergency surgery and that her condition was upgraded to stable. It states that a 56-year-old woman was shot multiple times in the back and killed while apparently attempting to flee the shooting, and that the family dog was also shot multiple times and killed.</p><p>Rebecca wrote in the Reddit post that she was "shocked" and was currently staying with her grandparents.</p><p>"Fuck you, Qanon," she wrote. "I hope the FBI tightens its grip on you and that your lackies rot in prison (and hell) for poisoning so many people."</p><p>QAnon adherents have been tied to multiple violent acts before, including a man from California who took his two children to Mexico and fatally shot them with a spear fishing gun after he fell deep into the baseless conspiracy theory movement and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/shootings-california-7d6e3f9371c1cf49e1be111fa7714801">reportedly believed</a> his children had serpent DNA. </p>

A father who allegedly became radicalized by QAnon shot his wife, daughter and family dog before being killed in shootout with police

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A couple have been charged with <keyword id="5903505" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="child-neglect">child neglect</keyword> after a boy in their care overdosed on <keyword id="14727" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="cocaine">cocaine</keyword>. </li><li>The 21-month-old was found unconscious and not breathing.</li><li>It's thought the boy ingested the cocaine while in the care of the couple, inside the home.</li></ul><p>A couple from Venice, <keyword id="6357385" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="florida">Florida</keyword>, has been charged with child neglect after a 21-month-old boy in their care overdosed on cocaine earlier this year.</p><p>Deputies were called to the home of Kaitlyn Van Dorn, 33, and Blake Pavey, 35, on January 8 after the boy was reported to be unconscious and not breathing, the Sarasota County Sheriff's office said in a <a href="https://www.sarasotasheriff.org/news_detail_T13_R1254.php"> statement on its website. </a></p><p>Naloxone, designed to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, was used on the child after it was suspected that he might have consumed narcotics.</p><p>"When we get there, the female defendant who's in the home says, 'He put something in his mouth while we were on a walk, I don't know what it was,'" Sarasota County Sheriff's office community affairs director Kaitlyn Perez told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/florida-couple-charged-child-cocaine">Fox News.</a></p><p>"The area is kind of known for narcotics use, so EMF decided to deploy Naloxone three times on the little boy. And, thank God that they did because he regained full consciousness, was awake and really, really alert," Perez added.</p><p>The boy was then taken to the hospital for additional testing. </p><p>Van Dorn told deputies that the child had been picking up rocks around the neighborhood using a teal bucket, which was later found inside the home containing a silver spoon and tissue - both items consistent with the ingestion of narcotics - according to the <a href="https://www.sarasotasheriff.org/news_detail_T13_R1254.php">statement from the Sheriff's office.</a></p><p>Perez told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/florida-couple-charged-child-cocaine">Fox News</a> that it is now believed that Van Dorn lied about going for a walk with the boy and that the cocaine was ingested inside the home.</p><p>"Then, we looked through video at different houses and businesses nearby to see what time she went on the walk. Did we see where the child picked something up? None of it ever happened. She never went on a walk. We're 100% certain on that," Perez said. "So, we're confident that he ingested the cocaine inside the house at some point."</p><p>It took several months for the Sheriff's office to obtain the child's hospital records, which confirmed he had overdosed on cocaine, according to the official statement. </p><p>The child, whose relationship to the couple has not been confirmed, has not been in their care since January. </p><p>A warrant for Van Dorn and Pavey's arrests was issued on Saturday, and both were taken into custody. Pavey was released on a $15,000 bond while Van Dorn remains in custody without bond due to a Violation of Probation charge.</p><p>The Sarasota County Sheriff's office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

There's nothing especially harmful about Bluetooth radiation compared to other electronic devices. </span><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">Still, like many of the other electronics that surround us, scientists can't say for sure this wireless technology is 100% harm-free.</span><span style="background-color: #ffcc00;"></span></p><p>The hubbub <a href="https://medium.com/s/the-nuance/are-airpods-and-other-bluetooth-headphones-safe-214a0449e13a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stems from a Medium blog post</a> that came out earlier this month. The post cites Jerry Phillips, a biochemist who has studied DNA damage from electromagnetic fields. <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19264461" target="_blank" rel="noopener">His research</a> suggests it's possible, but not certain, that electromagnetic field activity might be messing with human DNA in a harmful way, and that people should limit their exposure as a result.</p><p><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">"My concern for AirPods is that their placement in the ear canal exposes tissues in the head to relatively high levels of radio-frequency radiation," he said.</span></p><h2><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">There's no conclusive evidence that AirPods or other Bluetooth headsets are dangerous</span></h2><p>There's really no evidence that radio-frequency (RF) radiation can cause brain cancer or non-cancerous brain tumors in people. </p><p>The author of the post also pointed out that in 2015, a group of more than 200 international scientists sent an "appeal" <span>to the United Nations and the World Health Organization "expressing 'serious concern' about the non-ionizing electromagnetic field (EMF)" that is emitted by Bluetooth devices, like Airpods.</span><span></span></p><p>That's true, but <a href="https://www.emfscientist.org/index.php/emf-scientist-appeal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the letter</a> in question didn't specifically mention Bluetooth devices or headphones.</p><p>The scientists behind that letter are concerned about all kinds of electronics that emit non-ionizing electromagnetic fields - the <a href="https://www.osha.gov/SLTC/radiation_nonionizing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">energy waves that travel at the speed of light</a> in many electronics, including cell phones, Wi-Fi, smart meters, baby monitors, and broadcast antennas.</p><p><span>"EMF Scientists have serious concerns regarding the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to radiation from wireless devices and antennas from all sources, including the pulsed digital signals Bluetooth transmits," Elizabeth Kelley, the Director of the International EMF Scientist Appeal, told Business Insider in an email. </span></p><p><span>However, most other scientists still hesitate to say there is conclusive evidence that the small doses of radiation from cell phones and Bluetooth headsets are dangerous.</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></span></p><p><span>"They don't have enough energy to cause cancer by directly damaging the DNA inside cells," according to the <a href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/radiation-exposure/cellular-phones.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">American Cancer Society.</a></span></p><p><span>The <a href="https://www.fda.gov/radiation-emittingproducts/radiationemittingproductsandprocedures/homebusinessandentertainment/cellphones/ucm116338.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">radio waves</a> of electric and magnetic energy that radiate from cell phones, radios, and other types of wireless technology like Bluetooth are different from stronger types of radiation we're exposed to, including x-rays, gamma rays, and ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, which can break the chemical bonds in DNA.</span></p><p>In fact, as the <a href="https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CCDPHP/DEODC/EHIB/CDPH%20document%20Library/Cell-Phone-Guidance.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California Department of Public Health</a> points out, holding a cell phone up to your face emits much more RF energy than Bluetooth headsets like AirPods. </p><h2><span style="background-color: #ffffff;">There's evidence that cell phone radiation can be harmful to rats, but not humans</span></h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Scientific studies to date don't suggest this kind of phone radiation is harmful to human sin the way that bigger doses of radiation from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-causes-cancer-food-products-that-increase-your-cancer-risk-2018-3#radiation-27" target="_blank" rel="noopener">x-rays or solar UVs are</a>.</p><p>But the same isn't true for rats. The <a href="https://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/results/areas/cellphones/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">US National Toxicology Program</a> has found "clear evidence" that male rat exposure to extensive daily cell phone radiation is linked to more heart tumors, as well as "some evidence" that it's linked to more brain tumors. They can't say the same for female rats and mice (both male and female).</p><p>As <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/04/10/522775456/drugs-that-work-in-mice-often-fail-when-tried-in-people" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scientists have found many times before</a>, just because something happens in lab rats doesn't mean the same will be true in humans. It's tough to know if a cell-phone sized dose of radiation that human-sized beings are exposed to, day in and day out, is doing people any harm.</p><p>The evidence we have so far isn't convincing. One <a href="http://interphone.iarc.fr/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">10-year study across 13 countries</a> that the International Agency for Research on Cancer conducted on cell phone radiation risks concluded that there's no increased risk of brain tumors in average cell phone users, but those scientists cautioned that more research is needed on some of the most intense phone users. (Again, the dose of radiation from Bluetooth devices is lower than from a cell phone.) </p><p>If you are worried about potential radiation risks, Kelley with EMF Scientist recommends swapping Bluetooth headphones for wired headphones. Even that technique only leaves a few feet of space between your brain and the RF radiation from your cell phone.</p><p>Whether you use AirPods or any other kind of audio listening device, it's probably best to spend more time worrying about moderating volume.</p><p>There, the <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26768911" target="_blank" rel="noopener">science is more conclusive</a>. Constant, <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/01/060106134554.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">repeated exposure to loud noises</a> can lead to non-cancerous <span>acoustic neuroma tumors that cause hearing loss, as well as constant ringing in the ears called tinnitus. If that happens, you might have to put a different kind of wireless technology into your ears. It's called a <a href="http://www.csd.jmu.edu/symposium/Nelson%20Ruth%20Symposium%20.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hearing aid</a>.</span></p>

That's what's selling for $8.6 million in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood.</p><p>The 3 bedroom, 4.5 bath co-op was last on the market in 2007 for $2.7 million, a<span>ccording to CurbedSF, </span><span></span><a href="http://sf.curbed.com/archives/2015/05/07/86m_pac_heights_coop_is_basically_one_giant_tinfoil_hat.php">who first spotted the unusual listing</a>. It needed remodeling, and the buyers apparently went a step beyond installing a stainless steel six-range stove top and double ovens, transforming it into a cell phone radiation-blocking <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage">Faraday cage</a>. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The external walls, ceilings and floors were painted with a black graphite semi-conducting paint, according to a section of <a href="http://2170jackson.com/Protection">the apartment's website</a> that extensively details the process. Additionally, the floor, walls and ceilings are connected in a network of wire strips. The World Health Organization has <a href="https://www.who.int/peh-emf/about/WhatisEMF/en/index1.html">deemed this health practice excessive</a>, concluding that "current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electromagnetic fields."</p><p>Representatives for Kerr didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on the couple's wellness practices.</p><h2>Wellness is the ultimate status symbol in 2019</h2><p>As <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discreet-wealth-status-symbols-rich-wealthy-elite-education-health-travel-2019-3">Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported</a>, "Luxury goods are out, and luxury lifestyles are in." <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>On September 28, Facebook VP Guy Rosen <a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/09/security-update/">wrote a blog post</a> announcing a "security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts," where unnamed attackers used a vulnerability to access millions of users' accounts.</strong></li><li><strong>Facebook followed up on the security incident last week, and sent notifications to 30 million users on Friday detailing what personal data of theirs had been accessed by the attackers.</strong></li><li><strong>Earlier that same week, on October 8, Facebook announced a $200 camera-and-microphone device for the home, called Portal, for video calling.</strong></li><li><strong>People are skeptical of Facebook Portal, considering its recent scandals involving privacy and data collection.</strong></li></ul><p><span>Part of Facebook's goal is to connect people - friends, family, and even strangers - by creating technology that facilitates communication and human interaction.</span><span></span></p><p><span>And so, it makes sense that Facebook would build a device for real-time video calls - like Apple's FaceTime, but in a standalone device that can plug into Facebook's massive address book known as Messenger.</span><span></span></p><p><span>Facebook unveiled such a device last week - two, in fact - called <a href="https://portal.facebook.com/">Portal and Portal+</a>. Portal features a 10.1-inch display and costs $199, while the 15.6-inch Portal+ costs $349.</span><span></span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>This should be an exciting moment for Facebook: It's the company's first piece of self-made hardware, and it's directly related to the company's mission statement.</span><span></span></p><p><span>But, as with many things in life, timing is everything.</span><span></span></p><h2><span>The scandals keep on coming</span><span></span></h2><p><span>Facebook was reportedly planning on unveiling the Portal back in May, but decided against it. <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-28/facebook-is-said-to-delay-home-speaker-unveil-amid-data-crisis">A Bloomberg report</a> said Facebook was still reeling from the public outcry over revelations that UK consulting firm Cambridge Analytica had improperly accessed the personal data of&#xa0; 87 million users and then used that data to influence the users with political ads.</span><span>&#xa0;</span>People were very upset; It didn't seem like a good time for Facebook to hawk a camera-and-microphone device for the home.&#xa0;</p><p><span>Unfortunately, Facebook chose last week to reveal the Portal device - and the timing wasn't much better.</span><span></span></p><p><span>Just four days after Facebook announced Portal, <a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/10/update-on-security-issue/">the company announced in a blog post that 30 million Facebook accounts were hacked by unnamed attackers</a>. On Friday, Facebook users began receiving notifications from the company detailing the types of information (phone numbers, birth dates, etc) the hackers took.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>Facebook had previously updated the public on "a security issue affecting almost 50 million accounts,"&#xa0;<a href="https://newsroom.fb.com/news/2018/09/security-update/">on September 28</a>, so the company had ample time to delay the Portal announcement. But that didn't happen, and people learned about the Portal the same week they learned their Facebook accounts were hacked.</span><span></span></p><p><span>As you could guess, the Portal announcement did not play out well online, among critics or anyone else, really.</span><span></span></p><p><span>We reached out to Facebook to learn more about the timing around Portal's announcement.</span></p><h2><span>What ultimately matters is what customers think</span><span></span></h2><p><span>Beyond the initial reactions, it will be interesting to see what people think once they get Facebook Portal into their hands.</span><span></span></p><p><span>As I haven't tried the device myself, I can't say whether or not it's worth its $200 or $350 price. What I will say, though, is that on paper, it has most of the same features you can get elsewhere.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span></span><span>Facebook Portal can make video calls, of course, and you can also use it to view Facebook Watch videos, look at your Facebook photos or albums, or listen to music through Spotify or Pandora. <a href="https://youtu.be/0EFLnvjG7-A">In the words of Tim Cook</a>, "that's it!" </span><span></span></p><p><span>Maybe you want a large tablet in a specific part of your home to take video calls, and that's great. But most services you're getting on Facebook Portal are available elsewhere: You can make video calls from your phone, tablet, or laptop, plus you can use any of those devices to look at photos and videos, or listen to music.</span><span></span></p><p><span>From a privacy perspective, Facebook's Portal raises the same concerns as other passive-listening smart home appliances from the likes of Google, Amazon and Apple. Facebook's poor track record with privacy might make you more weary of their product, but letting any company (even a company that doesn't have an advertisting-based business model) put a microphone and video portal in your living room is a risky proposition.</span></p><p><span>Ultimately, people may not think about Facebook's history with data collection and privacy when they're considering this device. Facebook announced a $200 camera for your home the same week it revealed 30 million accounts were hacked

Sood, off lately had said that "The (<keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">telecom</keyword>) minister's and secretary's comments don't count as the view of the entire government".<br />
<br /> The matter has now been raised with the company (<keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword>) says an Economic Times report.<br />

A senior DoT official told ET, "Senior officials in the government have taken a note of his (Sood's) comments and we have taken up the matter with them (Vodafone). It was for the first time a senior executive has challenged the government's authority."<br />

The official further said that Vodafone had said the comment "wasn't meant like it sounded". The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ravi+Shankar+Prasad">Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad</a>, however, denied making any comments on the matter.<br />

A senior <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=DoT+">DoT </a>official has also "had a stern word" with officials at the <keyword id="105151" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cellular-Operators-Association-of-India">Cellular Operators Association of India</keyword> (COAI), the GSM industry lobby group, on the matter. Rajan Mathews, the director general of COAI, didn't respond to any queries and also declined to make any comment.<br />
The response the telecom operator gave on Sunday didn’t addressed any specific queries by ET. In fact, it emerged as a damage control as it paid tribute to the minster and the secretary.<br />
<br /> "We take this opportunity to once again thank the Hon'ble Union Minister for Communication &amp; IT, Shri <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword> and the Secretary DoT, Shri Rakesh Garg for working together with the industry and other stakeholders in actualising the PM's dream of Digital India," the company said in its email to ET.<br />

"Both the Hon'ble Minister and the Secretary DoT, are cognizant of the macro and micro issues facing the telecom industry, the resolution of which will go a long way in realising the potential of mobile technology to address some of India's most pressing challenges in the areas of education, health, inclusion, governance, equality and access," the mail further said.<br />
<br /> <keyword id="958297" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Sood">Sunil Sood</keyword>, who took over as the telco’s India CEO in April questioned the authority of <keyword id="46149" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-minister">Telecom Minister</keyword> and Telecom Secretary while reacting to a comment that the duo had asked for penalties to be imposed on telcos for bad call quality.<br />
<br /> As per the officials, Vodafone Group CEO <keyword id="105731" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vittorio-Colao">Vittorio Colao</keyword> had sought an appointment to meet the minister in October and the Sood’s comments would be taken up then.<br />

In a statement, Vodafone said, "The DoT has taken out clear guidelines for installation of mobile towers. Unfortunately, the state and local governments are not implementing it uniformly."<br />

"The Hon'ble Minister has led by example to dispel the myths around EMF by addressing the issue in the public domain. He has also prudently taken it up with the urban development ministry to allow for cell sites to be installed on government buildings. Similarly, the Secretary DoT too personally intervened to support the telecom industry when cell sites were being sealed or disabled in NCR."<br />
<br />
Telecom operators and the government have increasingly found themselves at odds over call drops. While top telcos have publicly said that they were not to be blamed or criticized for not helping the government in installation of more towers, the telecom department, on the other hand, has chided the companies for not looking to actively resolve the issue. The remark by Sood could also affect the apparent detente in Vodafone-government relations.<br />

British parent Vodafone Group Plc is involved in international arbitration with the government to resolve its eight year-old, Rs 20,000 crore tax disputes. Ties between the two parties had seemingly improved, with reconciliatory noises being made by both sides.<br />
<br />
Vodafone has in the past praised the country's political leadership and spoken about the government's intent to resolve the tax issue. The government had, in January, decided against appealing a court order that went in favor of Vodafone to avoid "fruitless litigation" and allay investor concerns on tax issues. The dispute pertained to a Rs 3,200 crore tax demand in a transfer-pricing case. <br />
