<ul class="summary-list"><li>I'm British, and my kids go to school in the US, where we live.</li><li>There are notable differences between the education system in America and my native UK.</li></ul><p>When my British friends ask what it's like to educate my kids in the US, the first issue they raise is the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viral-tiktok-about-school-shooting-is-helpful-security-expert-says-2023-6">risk of school shootings</a>.</p><p>Last year, no fewer than 21 people died, and 42 were injured in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.edweek.org/leadership/school-shootings-in-2023-fewer-injuries-and-deaths-while-gun-violence-continues/2023/12">incidents of gun violence in and around American schools</a>.</p><p>In contrast, the last school shooting in the UK — when a gunman murdered 16 elementary students and a teacher — happened in 1996. As a result, the public called for tighter gun controls, which the British government enforced.</p><p>My friends' next question is often related to academic achievement.</p><p>In 2018 — the most recent year the research was performed — the <a target="_blank" href="https://factsmaps.com/pisa-2018-worldwide-ranking-average-score-of-mathematics-science-reading/">Programme for International Student Assessment</a> (PISA) ranked the overall knowledge and skills of British 15-year-olds as 13th in the world in reading, literacy, mathematics, and science.</p><p>The same assessment found that 15-year-olds in the US were ranked 25th globally.</p><p>It's difficult to compare public school systems forensically because of the countries' vastly different populations and government infrastructures.</p><p>However, feedback from my British friends has convinced me that the setup in the UK is more user-friendly for kids and parents. </p><p>Here are three key reasons.</p><h2 id="b0008f3f-5364-49fe-82c5-aa434e90f0f2">Kids in the UK start school as young as 4</h2><p id="b0008f3f-5364-49fe-82c5-aa434e90f0f2">By law, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gov.uk/schools-admissions/school-starting-age#:~:text=Your%20child%20must%20start%20full,school%20age%20on%20that%20date.">children in the UK enter the publicly-funded British school system as young as 4</a>.</p><p id="b0008f3f-5364-49fe-82c5-aa434e90f0f2">Most begin full-time classes in "reception" — the first step on the educational ladder — in the September after their 4th birthday. Research has consistently shown that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/universal-pre-k-kids-more-likely-graduate-high-school-college-2021-5">early childhood education helps kids develop academically and socially</a>.</p><p id="b0008f3f-5364-49fe-82c5-aa434e90f0f2">It also relieves a huge financial burden on working parents, who no longer have to pay babysitters or nursery schools for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-childcare-costs-in-us-women-workforce-cheapest-countries-kids-2024-2">private childcare</a>.</p><p id="b0008f3f-5364-49fe-82c5-aa434e90f0f2">The age at which American parents are mandated to send their children to school depends on the state. In New York, for example, they are only obliged to attend by law after first grade.</p><h2 id="e664a782-e54a-4759-b161-aae89d75f2ea">School breaks are better spread out in the UK</h2><p id="e664a782-e54a-4759-b161-aae89d75f2ea">My friends in the UK can't believe my kids have an entire 10-week summer break from school.</p><p id="e664a782-e54a-4759-b161-aae89d75f2ea">"What on earth do you do with them for 10 weeks?" my daughter's godmother once asked. She grimaced when I told her we fork over thousands of dollars for day and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-hated-summer-camp-when-i-was-a-kid-2023-7">sleep-away camps</a>.</p><p id="e664a782-e54a-4759-b161-aae89d75f2ea">Almost every child in Britain gets a six-week summer break, two weeks at Christmas and two weeks at Easter. There is usually a one-week "half-term" in February, May, and October.</p><p id="e664a782-e54a-4759-b161-aae89d75f2ea">Responding to parents' complaints about the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/too-many-days-off-school-student-learning-loss-parent-stress-2023-10">length of the standard summer break</a>, some education authorities reduced it to five as an experiment. The extra week was added to the May half-term, giving kids 10 days off instead of five in the Spring.</p><h2 id="9b4266cc-0d10-48c7-af89-ca8b02c8e825">Kids wear uniform</h2><p id="9b4266cc-0d10-48c7-af89-ca8b02c8e825">Most government-run schools in the UK require students to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/school-uniforms-around-the-world-2017-7">wear a school uniform</a>. The protocols contrast those in the US, where most public school kids can wear what they want to class — albeit within reason.</p><p id="9b4266cc-0d10-48c7-af89-ca8b02c8e825">As a mom whose teens can waste hours picking an outfit to wear every morning, I'd like uniforms to be compulsory nationwide. I'm tired of the endless arguments over what clothes are "appropriate" or not.</p><p id="9b4266cc-0d10-48c7-af89-ca8b02c8e825">Meanwhile, I shudder when I hear about "elite" cliques of high schoolers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lululemon-diversity-inclusion-employees-of-color-chip-wilson-2024-1">dressed head to toe in Lululemon</a>. I can't bear to think of a kid being bullied because they're wearing something from Old Navy instead.</p><p id="9b4266cc-0d10-48c7-af89-ca8b02c8e825">A friend said her kids wear what they want for a few designated days on the UK school calendar, such as the last day of term. "The stress of competitive dressing is high-octane," she said.</p><p id="9b4266cc-0d10-48c7-af89-ca8b02c8e825">Uniforms are not only levelers but also support the idea of a community or team. Unsurprisingly, the two-time NCAA champion is taking her alma mater, the UConn Huskies, to win it all.</p><p>"I'm feeling good about UConn," Bird told Insider before the start of the tournament. "They had a little bit of a slog of a season given injuries, given there was some COVID disruptions at different points, not unlike a lot of other teams... This was a year where there was a lot of highs and lows. And I think what that does is prepare you for the really big moments. The top overall seed — the <keyword id="12137456" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="south-carolina-gamecocks" source="Orion">South Carolina Gamecocks</keyword> — entered the tournament with just two losses on the season, and now Dawn Staley's squad is rolling through the Greensboro corner of the bracket.</p><p>The Gamecocks dominated the Howard Bison with a whopping 58-point victory in their opening-round game, then took down a surging Miami Hurricanes squad by 16 points, despite shooting a season-low 29.5% from the field. They'll take on the fifth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels Friday and, should they win, advance to face the winner of Iowa State vs. Creighton for a trip to Minneapolis.</p><div type="image" title="Aliyah Boston." height="1405" width="1874" msid="90424429" hostid="261"></div><p>Bird picked the one seed in the Spokane region, too: The reigning champion <keyword id="13418665" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="stanford-cardinal" source="Orion">Stanford Cardinal</keyword> have been even more dominant on their side of the bracket than South Carolina has been through its first two games.</p><p>Stanford beat Montana State by 41 to start its title defense, and two days later, the Cardinal racked up 91 points behind Lexie Hull's 36-point showing to blow out the No. 8 Kansas Jayhawks. A strong, high-octane Maryland Terrapins squad awaits them in the Sweet 16, and if they survive, they'll meet the No. 2 Texas Longhorns or No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes in the Elite Eight.</p><p>"Stanford's a defending champion that, even though they lost Kiana Williams, they're all a year older," Bird said. They'll face a Cinderella team in the No. 10 South Dakota Coyotes on Saturday and then, should they win, face the winner of No. 1 Louisville and No. 4 Tennessee in the Elite Eight.</p><p>"Michigan's my dark horse," Bird explained. "They beat [No. 2] Baylor earlier in the year.... For some reason I think Michigan might come out [of the region], but I do think South Carolina will beat them."</p><div type="image" title="Michigan's Naz Hillmon grabs a rebound." height="1666" width="2222" msid="90424434" hostid="261"></div><p>"I'm hoping to see a South Carolina-UConn final," she added. But unfortunately, unlike stick-and-ball <keyword id="11893855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports" source="Orion">sports</keyword>, motorsports require a bit more than a trip to the local park to get started.</p><p>So how can the average fan get a dose of the sport without breaking the bank?</p><p>For the many people who look at some current and former F1 drivers, like Lance Stroll (son of Canadian billionaire) and Nikita Mazepin (son of Russian oligarch), it's easy to assume car racing is for the rich, but there are more accessible options for everyday people.</p><h2>Try your hand at autocross or a road rally race</h2><p>For one of the most budget-friendly forms of motorsports, your race car is actually sitting in your driveway. The Sports Car Club of America (or SCCA) is a nationwide nonprofit organization that organizes and sanctions motorsports events. The SCCA is divided into six conferences nationwide which organize local events to make them accessible to competitors across the country. Two types of SCCA events are most common and the easiest for new competitors to join: autocross and road rallies.</p><p>In autocross, drivers navigate a course of traffic cones and race against a clock. Autocross doesn't require any specialized type of vehicle — all the driver needs is an approved helmet and a willingness to stick around to help run the event.</p><p>According to the SCCA website, cars are categorized by type. There are 10 classes, ranging from daily driver road cars (say, your 2018 Hyundai Veloster,) all the way to purpose-built track day cars.</p><p>In SCCA Road Rallies, competitors drive their road cars to predetermined checkpoints and are scored based on how closely they arrive to their assigned target arrival time. Each vehicle has a team of two: a driver and a navigator, who helps with directions and keeps track of progress. Road rallies are a competition of precision, rather than speed, and the SCCA says it's a great way for gearheads to compete without doing any driving outside of their comfort zone.</p><h2>Karting is a great place for kids to start</h2><div type="image" title="Alex Albon drives a go-kart" height="2032" width="2710" msid="92637022" hostid="261" sizebytes="183028"></div>If autocross or road rallying events aren't doing it for you – karting might be your ticket to speed. When most people hear karting, they think of the small engine go karts scooting around their local mini golf course.<p>In motorsports, though, karting involves purpose built, high-octane engine racing karts that can go upwards of 50 mph. It is also often the gateway to elite open-wheel racing for most professional drivers, who spend their childhoods driving high-powered karts on competitive racing circuits. The cost of entry for karting as a sport is still pretty steep – a competitive karting setup can run more than $10,000 just to get started. However, many karting tracks have rental karts, karting schools and rental leagues.</p><p>More and more, cities are introducing indoor electric karting facilities that offer extremely competitive karting leagues year-round. K1 Speed, a chain of indoor karting facilities with 60 locations in the US and Canada, even offers 1-on-1 racing lessons with a driving coach.</p><h2>Get the experience from the comfort of home</h2><div type="image" title="fan using race car simulator" height="3456" width="4608" msid="92637025" hostid="261" sizebytes="1135776"></div>But by far the easiest way to participate in motorsports won't even require you to leave your house — or even get off your couch. Another great option for a motorsports enthusiast looking to get involved is sim racing. One of the most budget-friendly options, sim racing only requires an internet connection, a computer and a sim racing wheel. This is a particularly good option for people who might not have a car or live in an urban area with no nearby motorsports.<p>iRacing, a major sim racing platform, runs on a subscription model wherein users can race other live users or race AI-powered vehicles. You might even run into a professional racer online in one of the lobbies.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nascar-formula-1-online-races-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-3"> As Insider reported at the height of the pandemic</a>, iRacing hosted online races for many of the then-paused racing series, and many drivers have even used it to train and learn new circuits.</p>

The Chiefs, unsurprisingly, also ranked first in the NFL with <span>425.6 yards per game.</span></p><p><span>The Los Angeles Rams sit at second on that list with 421.1 yards per game and clock in at third with 504 total points on the season. Rams quarterback Jared Goff threw for 32 touchdowns to power the passing game, while superstar running back Todd Gurley scored a league-high 17 rushing touchdowns. The Patriots ranked fifth in the NFL with 393.4 yards of total offense per game. Their balanced offense came in large part from the combined effort of Tom Brady and Sony Michel. Brady recorded 4,355 passing yards and 29 touchdowns in what was widely considered an "off" season, while Michel paced the running game with 931 rushing yards.</span></p><p>Once upon a time, strong defense was the ticket to the Super Bowl. <span>But between boasting the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-rams-outlast-chiefs-54-51-in-high-octane-offensive-showcase-2018-11">third-highest scoring contest</a> and</span><span> the <a href="https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/NFL/scoring.htm">third-highest scoring average</a> in NFL history, this season was a turning point for the league. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The Oakland Raiders moved into a tie for first place in the AFC West&#xa0;on Sunday with a narrow 34-31 win over the San Diego Chargers.</p><p>The Raiders are now 4-1 on the season, and though their defense leaves much to be desired, they're pulling out wins with a high-octane offense that seemingly thrives on gusty play calls.</p><p>This was on display against the Chargers, when in the third quarter, on 4th-and-2, trailing by five points, head coach Jack Del Rio kept the offense on the field.&#xa0;</p><p>From the 21-yard line, quarterback Derek Carr launched a rainbow into tight coveage to receiver Michael Crabtree for the touchdown. The Raiders then went for two, taking a three-point lead, from which they never looked back.</p><p><div></div></p><p>It was the second highlight, risky play-call from Del Rio this season. In a Week 1 comeback over the New Orleans Saints, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/raiders-beat-saints-on-gutsy-2-point-conversion-2016-9">Del Rio opted to go for two</a> after scoring a touchdown to bring the Raiders within one point, with just 47 seconds left. They converted and won the game.</p><p>After Sunday's Week 5 win, <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000718675/article/courageous-jack-del-rio-changes-culture-in-oakland">Del Rio told NFL.com's Mike Silver</a> his simple logic for his calls.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"The thinking is, I believe [going for it] is the right thing to do. You've got to have the courage to make the call, and the trust for them to get it done.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"And then, when you do it, and you show them that trust, and they act on it, and they do the right thing -- then it builds your confidence."</p><p>It likely helps that through four weeks, the Raiders have had Football Outsiders' second-ranked offense and 29th-ranked defenses - a gap&#xa0;that's likely to widen after their 34-31 win in Week 5. Del Rio would probably prefer his elite offense go for it, rather than punt and put his not-elite defense on the field.</p><p>Still, the confidence Del Rio shows in his players reverberates throughout the team.</p><p>Carr told Silver, "That's my guy. He trusts us. You get fired up when a coach puts his trust in you like that."</p><p>Said receiver Michael Crabtree, "He believes in us, so we've got to have his back. It all goes together. We take care of each other."</p><p>Linebacker Bruce Irvin added, "I love that.&#xa0;He believes in his team. He believes in his players. That's all you can ask for in a head coach."</p><p>The Raiders are unlikely to keep pulling out these close contests, and they will need their defense to catch up to their offense to truly be a scary playoff threat.
