The highlights: Soaring oil prices won't slow the clean-tech boom, according to Shell and Oliver Wyman. In fact, they could accelerate investments in transition technologies. <ul><li>"This near-term price of oil actually accelerates us to be able to speed up the transition," said Elisabeth Brinton, EVP for renewables and energy solutions at Shell. </li><li>Money is pouring into ESG funds, which has made the investment case for clean-energy projects comparable to oil and gas, said Francois Austin, partner and head of energy at Oliver Wyman. </li><li>Facebook is run on 100% renewable energy, as of last year. The key to getting there was partnering with utilities, which are also trying to reduce their emissions, said Urvi Parekh, Facebook's head of renewable energy.</li><li>Electrochemical batteries are the cheapest and most feasible solution to the issue of intermittency, according to Form Energy (Form is developing that very technology). </li></ul>A happy ending: We ended the panel by asking all four executives if they believed the world would realistically reach net-zero by 2050. Optimisim is in their job descriptions, but it was still nice to here the responses. <ul><li>"Yes, if we get started right now. We really can't afford to waste any more time. Not another five, not another 10 years. It's got to get going right now," said Mateo Jaramillo, the CEO and cofounder of Form Energy.</li><li>"Yes, because we are firmly focused on it and I believe people are good, have passion, and the capital is pouring in the right direction. But we have to put the pedal to the metal," Brinton said.</li><li>"This is the decade for the corporates to really step up and really put the shovels in the ground and build the infrastructure," Austin said.</li><li>"Yes. China, the world's top emitter, made a surprising pledge to reach net-zero emissions by 2060. California said it would ban sales of new gas-guzzling cars by 2035. Meanwhile, a number of corporate giants — from Morgan Stanley to Walmart — committed to various emissions reduction targets. Big news also spewed from the electric-vehicle industry — namely, from EV firms Nikola and <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword> (which, though rivals, are both named after the inventor Nikola Tesla). Nikola's founder and chairman <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nikola-founder-trevor-milton-resigns-amid-fraud-allegations-timeline-2020-9">stepped down</a> amid allegations of fraud. Tesla, on the other hand, held its much-anticipated "battery day" Tuesday, during which it announced a new cell design and forthcoming $25,000 electric car. Let's jump in. <h2><div type="image" title="tesla battery day" height="1239" width="1652" msid="78323181" hostid="261"></div></h2><h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-silicon-batteries-likely-to-run-into-challenges-experts-say-2020-9">Tesla to face challenges as it bets on silicon batteries</a></h2>Picture a drive-in theater for the wealthy with Elon Musk on stage. That was essentially Battery Day. Seated in parked Tesla cars, shareholders watched as Musk, who's known for fanfare, announced major changes to the firm's batteries that would result in steep cost reductions. The big picture: Those reductions stand to make future Tesla models <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-silicon-batteries-likely-to-run-into-challenges-experts-say-2020-9">cheaper than their gas-guzzling rivals</a>. <ul><li>The cost of batteries has long held back widespread EV adoption. </li></ul>The new battery: Tesla's cells, to be made in-house, will be larger and feature a more efficient "tabless" design. <ul><li>The company will also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-silicon-batteries-likely-to-run-into-challenges-experts-say-2020-9">ramp up its use of the element silicon in the cells' anodes</a>, parts of the battery that store energy. </li></ul>The problem with silicon: An abundant and cheap element, silicon stores a lot more energy than the leading anode material, graphite (the stuff in pencils). But it's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-silicon-batteries-likely-to-run-into-challenges-experts-say-2020-9">notoriously challenging to work with</a>. <ul><li>As silicon absorbs ions of lithium, i.e. battery juice, it expands dramatically.</li><li>That causes cracking that degrades the cell over time. (To be clear, it's a lot more complicated. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-silicon-batteries-likely-to-run-into-challenges-experts-say-2020-9">I dive into more of the details here</a>.)</li><li>This problem has stymied the battery industry for decades. </li></ul>Tesla's solution: It's not surprising that Tesla is using silicon, as higher energy density translates to cheaper EVs, but experts we talked to this week weren't exactly sold on the company's approach (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-silicon-batteries-likely-to-run-into-challenges-experts-say-2020-9">which we detail here</a>). <ul><li>They said Musk's firm will likely run into the same challenges that have long plagued silicon-cell makers. </li><li>A former Tesla battery engineer, who now runs his own cell company, said it's unlikely that Musk will achieve the 20% range improvement his company promises through silicon cells. </li></ul>Do you have info about Tesla? What's more interesting is how they plan to adopt a less-familiar business model — one honed by utilities over decades — without sinking. That's a question that will test <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elisabeth-brinton-new-energies-boss-royal-dutch-shell-business-model-2020-9">Elisabeth Brinton</a> in her career at <keyword id="46532" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Shell">Shell</keyword>. <ul><li>Brinton leads Shell's new energies division. </li><li>She's also a key figure behind the company's goal of reaching <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elisabeth-brinton-new-energies-boss-royal-dutch-shell-business-model-2020-9">net-zero emissions by 2050</a>. </li></ul>Who is she? A former exec in the utility industry, Brinton is known by some of her peers as a near-irrepressible optimist and visionary, whose agenda hasn't always matched those of her superiors. <ul><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elisabeth-brinton-new-energies-boss-royal-dutch-shell-business-model-2020-9">You can read our full profile of Brinton here</a>. </li></ul>In other news: Shell <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-shell-launches-major-cost-cutting-drive-to-prepare-for-energy-transition-2020-9">has launched</a> a major cost-cutting initiative, months after the price of oil crashed, called 'Project Reshape.'<ul><li>The company is looking to cut 30% to 40% off the cost of producing oil and gas. </li><li>Shell will also look at cost-saving opportunities in its network of 45,000 gas stations as part of the review.</li><li>The project, first reported by Reuters, is part of the company's pivot towards renewable energy and mirrors similar moves by other European majors including <keyword id="32848" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="BP">BP</keyword>. </li></ul>Do you have info about Shell? There's the usual — oil is cheap and still struggling to gain ground. But there's also a question among investors about whether BP can be successful while adopting a less-familiar business model. <ul><li>The company said last week that its renewable projects could yield 8-10% returns. </li><li>That's pretty high for clean-energy projects but low relative to what oil projects return when the price of crude is up. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/oil-company-bp-solar-energy-strategy-behemoth-2020-9">You can see all of BP's clean-energy ambitions here, including its plan to dominate the solar industry</a>. </li></ul>In other news: BP <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nikola-bp-talks-fell-through-after-short-seller-accusations-report-2020-9">was in talks with electric-truck maker Nikola</a> for possible partnerships on hydrogen fueling stations but they fizzled this week as Nikola faced fraud allegations, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/nikolas-talks-with-major-energy-firms-stalled-following-short-seller-report-11600872115">per the Wall Street Journal</a>. (AP Photo/Martin Meissner)" height="3545" width="4727" msid="78323187" hostid="261"></div><h2>A quick guide to understanding 'net-zero'</h2>Defined: Net-zero indicates that a company will not release any more carbon emissions than it removes from the atmosphere, such as through planting trees. <ul><li>"Carbon-neutral" is often used as a stand-in for net-zero. </li></ul>But: Companies produce a range of different kinds of emissions, and net-zero doesn't necessarily apply to all of them.<ul><li>Oil companies, for example, have said they'll reduce to zero emissions tied to their operations (such as those stemming from heating office buildings). </li><li>However, they don't go as far as reducing to zero emissions that come from customers using their products like fuel. Those emissions fall into a category known as Scope 3. </li><li>The vast majority of emissions produced by fossil-fuel companies are Scope 3. </li></ul>A bigger goal: To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, countries need to reach net-zero CO2 emissions by mid-century, according to the Paris Agreement. <ul><li>More than 20 countries have set net-zero goals.</li></ul><h2>4 stories we didn't cover </h2><ul><li>GE said it will stop making coal-fired power plants, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ge-power-idUSKCN26C1QF?taid=5f68a1971266d200015900d0&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitterurce=twitter">Reuters reports</a>. </li><li>Airbus announced it's working on three zero-emissions hydrogen planes, <a href="https://t.co/iMiKMDQg5c?amp=1">Bloomberg reports</a>. One design could carry up to 200 people.</li><li>Electric-motor startup Turntide <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/turntide-technologies-brings-change-to-global-power-consumption-with-worlds-first-digital-intelligent-and-sustainable-electric-motor-raises-33m-including-investment-from-amazon-climate-pledge-fund-301137423.html">raised $33</a> million from investors including Amazon and Nest founder Tony Fadell. </li><li>Solar tracking company Array Technologies is the latest cleantech company set to go public through a SPAC, <a href="https://pv-magazine-usa.com/2020/09/23/array-technologies-ipo-to-raise-100-million-6-takeaways-from-the-s-1/">pv magazine reports</a>. </li></ul>That's it! It tends to be worse if job cuts are not handled well. At <keyword id="6383208" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="exxon">Exxon</keyword>: Current and former employees say <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exxon-mishandled-layoffs-morale-oil-price-collapse-2021-2">the company fumbled job cuts</a> and morale has suffered as a result. So what: Poor morale in the wake of layoffs tends to cause a decline in worker performance and higher safety risks. It can also make it difficult for a company to attract top talent in the future, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exxon-mishandled-layoffs-morale-oil-price-collapse-2021-2">according to two business professors we talked to</a>. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>"Concerns about quality and safety fall," said Sandra Sucher, a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School. "If you're in the energy industry in a business that depends on both of those things hugely, that's a very definite risk."</li><li>Exxon faced an incredibly tough 2020, posting a $22 billion loss. Investors are watching to see how well it recovers.</li><li>So far so good: This year Exxon's stock is already up more than 20%. </li></ul>In other news: Exxon's shareholder meeting in May is worth watching, following campaigns launched by activist investors to shake up the company's board and push it to do more to address <keyword id="6361617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-change">climate change</keyword>. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>One thing to watch is whether a proposal submitted by BNP Paribas Asset Management on climate lobbying comes to a vote. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exxon-fights-investor-pressure-to-disclose-climate-lobbying-2021-1">You can read more about that here</a>. </li></ul>Got a tip? Shell's approach: The Netherlands-based company will sell a lot more power, hydrogen gas, biofuels, and electricity for charging cars. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shell-strategy-to-dominate-energy-oil-wanes-investor-day-slides-2021-2#that-means-gas-stations-of-the-future-will-look-pretty-different-4">One slide I thought was neat</a> shows what Shell gas stations of the future might look like. </li><li>Of note, the company said it reached peak oil production in 2019, and peak emissions the year before. </li></ul>But: Fossil-fuel products will still make up the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shell-strategy-to-dominate-energy-oil-wanes-investor-day-slides-2021-2#shell-announced-new-targets-to-reduce-the-intensity-of-emissions-over-the-next-three-decades-1">majority of its business</a> (and budget) in the near-term. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Also, not all investors and climate advocates <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/shell-shares-fall-net-zero-plan-investor-greenpeace-church-reaction-115942448.html">were pleased with Shell's new strategy</a>. Its stock dipped following the event and some analysts pointed out that its budget for renewables was relatively low, <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/shell-shares-fall-net-zero-plan-investor-greenpeace-church-reaction-115942448.html">Yahoo News reported</a>. </li></ul>In other news: European rival Total also made a big announcement this week: The company <a href="https://www.total.com/system/files/documents/2021-02/results_q4_2020_en.pdf">is planning to rebrand</a> as "TotalEnergies" as part of its push to sell cleaner forms of energy. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Total said it will transform over the next decade, growing its production of natural gas and renewable energy. </li><li>The two companies have taken different clean-up approaches: While Shell is becoming a major power trader, Total has poured resources into physical renewable-energy assets. </li></ul><div type="image" title="David Energy team" height="3440" width="5628" msid="80885702" hostid="261"></div><h2 style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-energy-raises-19-million-transform-power-sector-2021-2">It was a big week for startup raises …</a> </h2>We had the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-energy-raises-19-million-transform-power-sector-2021-2">exclusive this week</a> on David Energy, a Brooklyn-based startup that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-energy-raises-19-million-transform-power-sector-2021-2">scored $19 million</a> in a push to redefine what a power company looks like. <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>David Energy is small and its business is obscure (not to mention technical) but it offers a ton of insight into what electricity companies of the future might look like. </li><li>The startup sells power to buildings. It also operates software that helps those buildings control their demand for electricity by managing batteries, solar panels, and other energy assets onsite. That allows it to take advantage of fluctuating energy prices. </li><li>True to its name <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-energy-raises-19-million-transform-power-sector-2021-2">David Energy is taking on a major industry dominated by just a handful of energy giants</a>. (Yes: It was named after David from David and Goliath) </li></ul>As I said, it was a big week for startup raises: <ul style="text-align: left;"><li>Powin Energy, a battery startup, raised more than $100 million from investors including Energy Impact Partners and Trilantic Capital Management. <a href="https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/powin-energy-raises-100m-to-compete-for-leadership-of-grid-storage-market">Greentech Media has more</a>. </li><li>Highview Power, a startup focused on long-duration storage, raised over <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210209005270/en/Highview-Power-Closes-Growth-Capital-Funding-Round-with-70-Million">$70 million</a>. Investors include Janus Continental Group, TSK, and Sumitomo Heavy Industries.</li><li>C-Zero raised <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210209005040/en/C-Zero-Raises-11.5M-Series-A-to-Produce-Clean-Hydrogen-from-Natural-Gas">$11.5 million</a> in a round led by Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Eni Next, the venture arm of Italian energy giant Eni.
