Gadkari was in the Maharastra city to inspect the Eastern Peripheral Express, where he announced that Mahindra and Mahindra will be providing 200 taxis for the first of its kind government project, undertaken by Nagpur Municipal Corporation. "We wanted to start the project early but there are some problems in setting up charging stations," Gadkari said. Nagpur to witness e-taxi trial run in May

With the rising levels of air pollution in the country, the electric vehicle segment is hoping that the Modi government will finally take steps to bolster the growth of this otherwise dormant auto segment in the upcoming Budget 2016. 
 “Pure <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">Electric Vehicles</keyword> need to be nurtured in a different way than Hybrid vehicles. At present the manufacturing base of the electric components and the batteries for the electric vehicles is almost non existent, neither do we have the public charging infrastructure to support such electric vehicles. Amongst other things, the following need to be done to trigger a growth in pure electric vehicles, particularly the electric two wheelers and small cars,” says Sohinder Gill, director, Corporate Affairs, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV). 
 
He adds, “In the previous union budget 2015-16, FAME India (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in India) policy was unveiled by the Central government. It has been a good step to create a fine eco-system for faster adoption of green vehicles in the country. In NEMMP, the largest potential of reduction in the pollution and the crude oil consumption was anticipated out of electric two wheelers and small cars, however their sale has not picked up.” 
 
Thus, looking at the current scenario and the possible return of the odd-even scheme in the city, BI India lists down their expectations from the Union Budget 2016. 
 
1. Govt should provide infrastructure support for setting up charging stations in at least top 50 cities where there is a significant population of EVs. Unless, a city is well populated with charging stations, people will be reluctant to migrate to electric vehicles. 
 
2. The industry also needs financial and technology support in the area of technology development and “make in India" specially related to next generation electronic, electric and battery technology. 
 
3. Another issue is related to availability of finances. Banks have been reluctant to provide loans for the purchase of electric two wheelers. The centre needs to direct public banks to offer loans at a zero-interest rate. 
 
4. Make a rule that only electric bikes would be permitted to be used as 2W taxi or for food/ E-com deliveries. Allow 100% depreciation on the battery swapping and charging stations put up by the e taxi/ e commerce companies and subsidy on 2nd lithium battery for such usage 
 
5. The Centre needs to maintain 6% Import duty on CKD and local components for next three years at least or better, till the time the domestic manufacturing eco-system is fully developed. 
 
6. Government and public sector offices should convert part of their fleet to electric and should heavily incentivise employees to convert to electric vehicles. 
 
7. We are positive that if these measures are taken, we will have a vibrant eco-system for electric vehicles in the country and we all know that green mobility is the need of hour.” 
 
Well, here’s hoping Modi government does announce reforms to boost the growth of electric vehicles in the country.

Southwest Airlines is teaming up with Archer to give passengers electric flying taxis

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> wants India to switch to <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> by 2030. In a bid to achieve this target, the Indian government is planning a policy that will include tax breaks, subsidies, etc to rope in aggregators and car manufacturers. In the first phase, India will start with public transport. Also, under the plan, two-wheelers, three-wheelers and non-air-conditioned city buses will be sold without batteries, thus slashing prices by as much as 70%. The batteries will be leased at a specified cost and can be swiftly swapped with recharged ones at stations, he said. "The private vehicles will be the last lap of the scheme. We expect the programme to start scaling in three years. The programme is in the final stages of drafting," an official told ET. "It will take just two-and-half minutes to replace auto batteries and can be done in 10 minutes when city buses rest after about a 30-km trip. The model, however, will not work for AC cars and AC buses," the government official said. A formal policy is expected in next six months as an inter-ministerial committee led by <keyword id="2665691" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Niti-Aayog">Niti Aayog</keyword> is drawing up the details of the plan to promote usage and convert most vehicles to electric by 2030. For taxis, the government is considering fast-charging electric stations. Specifications and guidelines for each type of electric vehicle, lease plans, battery swaps and charging stations are being worked out. The Modi-led government is also likely to involve aggregators and push them to purchase vehicles and lease them to drivers. The tax breaks for manufacturers are expected to give the 'Make in India' programme a boost. "In the pilot phase, cells for the batteries will be imported. As the programme scales up, they can be manufactured locally," the official told ET.

And, he has made good bets too, as the valuations of all the startups he backed, have zoomed. "The thing that I am intrigued by first is a start-up that has an interesting concept which excites me. If it doesn’t excite me, I really don’t need to make an investment in that company," said Tata. Being associated with the Tata name also brought the much-needed endorsement for other investors into these ventures. "His involvement is really inspiring when it comes to existing employees and even attracting top talent,” says Nidhi Agarwal, founder of startup Kaaryah who also managed to bring Tata on-board, as an advisor. Gadkari said allowing <keyword id="4221223" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Driverless-Cars-in-India">driverless cars in India</keyword> would lead to joblessness and the government plans to train drivers as adequate driving skills can provide employment to about 50 lakh people. "We will not allow driver-less cars in India. India suffers a huge shortage of 22 lakh drivers...Cab aggregators take advantage of these. We are not going to promote any technology or policy that will render people jobless," Gadkari said. He said the government is planning to introduce a cab aggregator platform where commuters could choose any mode of transportation like electric four-wheeler taxis or two- wheelers. This step will increase competition with Ola and Uber in India. “The government will only be a facilitator in this but the platform will bring in more competition and help commuters to have affordable public transportation,” said Gadkari. Speaking about electric vehicles, Gadkari said government will promote electric vehicles but would not allow its imports and rather would urge all major automobile companies to manufacture this as per 'Make in India' drive. Besides, the government is also planning to introduce and make GPS and satellite tracking mandatory in all public and private vehicles. Besides, plans were afoot to transform public transportation in the country and replace 1.8 lakh buses across the states with luxury buses, the minister said. "Talks are on with <keyword id="6354424" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="World-Bank">World Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="50190" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asian-Development-Bank">Asian Development Bank</keyword> (ADB) to help India to replicate the London Transport Authority Model where all the public transportation buses would be replaced by luxury buses and a common man can travel in them by paying about 40 per cent less price as compared to current fares," said Gadkari.

The minister said that going forward, demand for electric vehicles will increase and it will help in pushing the growth of the sector. "Tesla already last year bought one billion dollars of components from I think all of you sitting here.... I have the list of companies who supply to Tesla. This year their target is nearly USD 1.7 billion or USD 1.9 billion what they mentioned," he said here at an annual session of ACMA. When asked about foreign firms looking to invest in India as part of their China plus one strategy, Goyal said that global companies are coming to India because of its attractiveness. "I totally debunk and reject the China plus one theory. That's not what is going to drive India...India of today stands on its own feet. The India of today has offerings for the rest of the world... both for investment and trade," he said. Goyal added that India provides them good business environment, skills, managerial talent, a big market, and demand generated by 1.4 billion people. "It's a rules-based economy..., it's a young democracy.....one of the fastest growing large economies. All of this makes it a compulsive investment destination. "Therefore companies around the world have gone beyond the China-plus-one story, they have gone beyond the ABC philosophy of anything but China, they have gone beyond friend-shoring or near-shoring and is looking at India as a trusted partner, he added.. The electric auto industry, as it grows worldwide, will see growth in India also, he said. Elon Musk's Tesla looking at sourcing components worth $1.9 billion from India: Goyal

<keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> is continuing talks with several investors to raise funds and recently it picked up around $50m from a New York-based hedge fund. India's largest taxi aggregator Ola raised funds from hedge fund Tekne Capital Management, and the funding is expected to take Ola’s valuation to over $3 billion. The latest round comes after Ratan Tata's RNT Capital Advisors and US hedge fund Falcon Edge infused money in the startup. "Ola continues to be in talks with various investors, including Coatue Management for this round," a source familiar with the development told ET. As per reports, Ola’s market share in India will be around 65%, with Uber holding the rest. Ola is going aggressive in the country and is working on several projects, including introducing electric vehicles in cities. The latest funding also comes after Uber is embroiled in a cultural row. Uber has also been slapped with an intellectual property lawsuit from Google's parent Alphabet-owned Waymo.

These global startups are reportedly on a hiring spree for Indian talent

Mumbai, Jan 6 () App-based taxi service provider Prakriti E-Mobility on Monday said it has tied up with US-based Ridecell Inc as its technology partner in India for its all-electric cab service, Evera.
 The company also announced the launch of its app-based EV cab services across the national capital region (NCR).
 Ridecell Technology provides a comprehensive end-to-end mobility solution that allows Prakriti E-Mobility to quickly launch the fleet and streamline efficiencies through predictive analytics for fleet operations and maintenance, the company said.
 "We are excited to be working closely with Ridecell to bring a unique mobility service to India," Prakriti E-Mobility CEO and Co-founder Nimish Trivedi said.
 Ridecell's technology solution will equip Prakriti E-Mobility with a seamless, comprehensive and customisable platform, he said.
 The technology will also offer a complete shared mobility platform that includes a rider and driver app, a cloud-based operational dash board to control vehicle assignment, ride pricing and other critical service parameters, the company said.
 Co-founded by Nimish Trivedi, Vikas Bansal and Rajeev Tiwari, Prakriti E-Mobility provides app-based cab services with features such as zero surge charge and cancellation fee, among others.

<ul><li>Shares of some Indian automobile companies have lost over 40% of their value since the start of the year.</li><li>Car makers have been the worst hit by the slump in demand triggered by slump in the Indian economy that has hit consumption.</li><li>The Narendra Modi government's rush to get people to move to electric cars is making business worse for makers of traditional cars that run on fossil fuels like petrol and diesel.</li></ul>Indian car makers are in dire straits. Sales have been falling for eight straight months now with no respite in sight. Electric cars may be better for environment but there are many concerns including the feasibility for customers and the availability of infrastructure to name a few. The government has cut the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/gst-council-slashes-tax-on-evs-and-ev-chargers/articleshow/70407724.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">goods and services tax on electric cars</a> to less than half and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/union-budget-2019-indian-government-announces-tax-subsidy-for-purchasers-of-electric-vehicles/articleshow/70091003.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">offered tax rebates</a> on interest paid loans taken to buy electric cars, aside from setting aside <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/electric-vehicles-policy-under-fame-ii-offers-incentives-for-local-manufacturing-and-subsidies-for-buyers/articleshow/68314114.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">a ₹100 billion earlier this year</a> to incentivise electric car manufacturing in India.

We, however, believe the above policy measures will be unable to trigger much replacement demand and hence are unlikely to provide much of a boost to auto demand. First, the number of vehicles that are older than 15 years and still in active use is very limited. The owners of such vehicles will usually have limited financial capability to buy new or other vehicles in the secondary market (even if incentives are transferrable), and hence are less likely to go for this voluntary scrappage scheme," CLSA explained. Car makers have had to offer deep discounts to bring people into showrooms. These discounts are far more than the incentive available on registration renewals and yet, they have failed to revive demand for cars. The policy squeeze will be an added burden on the companies.
