In yet another EV fire incident, an <keyword id="6077703" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="okinawa-autotech" source="Orion">Okinawa autotech</keyword> dealership burnt down to ashes in Tamil Nadu owing to a reported fire in an e-scooter belonging to the company. Electric two-wheeler manufacturer <keyword id="143042" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="okinawa" source="Orion">Okinawa</keyword> had recalled 3,215 units of its 'Praise Pro' scooters on April 16, just before the dealership was engulfed in flames in Tamil Nadu The EV maker was yet to make a statement on the latest EV fire at its dealership. No casualties were reported and the fire was put out with the help of locals but the entire showroom was gutted. This was the sixth EV fire incident since the onset of summer this year. While recalling 'Praise Pro' e-scooters, Okinawa Autotech had said that this voluntary campaign is "in the wake of the recent thermal incident and in line with the company's long-standing commitment to customer safety". According to the company, the recall has been initiated to fix "any issue" related to batteries. "The batteries will be checked for loose connectors or any damage and be repaired free of charge at any of the Okinawa authorised dealerships pan India," the company said. On March 26, a father-daughter duo died due to a blast in the battery of their <keyword id="6080167" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="okinawa-scooter" source="Orion">Okinawa scooter</keyword> which was being charged at their home. As more and more electric two-wheelers catch fire in the country, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant last week asked EV original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to voluntarily recall batches involved in the EV fire incidents. Several electric two-wheelers belonging to Jitendra Electric Vehicles caught fire in Nashik on April 9. Okinawa dealership burns down after another electric scooter catches fire, company recalls over 3,200 Praise Pro scooters

In yet another tragic incident involving an electric two-wheeler, a 40-year-old man has died after a blast occurred in an e-scooter belonging to Boom Motors while being charged at home. The incident in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, also left the deceased Kotakonda Siva Kumar's wife and two daughters with severe burn injuries. According to multiple reports, the police registered a complaint under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) against the EV maker and a notice was sent to the Boom Motors dealer that sold the e-scooter to Kumar. Kumar, a DTP designer, had bought the e-scooter for nearly Rs 70,000 on April 22. The battery exploded within a day of purchase early on April 23, according to reports. Boom Motors was yet to respond to the deadly incident. Ironically, the EV maker was among those selected under the government's automotive production linked incentive (PLI) scheme. To date, three <keyword id="7583348" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pure-ev" source="Orion">Pure EV</keyword>, one <keyword id="6354720" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="ola" source="Orion">Ola</keyword>, two Okinawa and 20 Jitendra EV scooters have caught fire in the country, raising burning questions about their safety. The unabated deadly fires in the electric two-wheelers has shaken up the entire EV industry and its stakeholders, forcing the government to direct EV makers to immediately recall faulty batches that may trigger more such incidents. Earlier, an 80-year-old man was killed and two others injured when the battery of a Pure EV electric two-wheeler exploded in their house in Telangana's Nizamabad district. Electric scooter fire accident claims another man's life, leaves his wife and two daughters with severe burns

Persuading people onto scooters is potentially big business, with the market for these electric vehicles estimated to be worth <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/press-release/electric-scooter-market-by-new-business-developments-innovations-business-growth-strategies-segmentation-and-forecasts-2019---2025-2019-09-27">$15 billion by 2025</a>. Lucrative as the market may be, it's also competitive and cash-guzzling.Two of the best-known firms in the space, Lime and Bird, have raised more than $1 billion between them to fuel a rapid global expansion. Lime is expected to post a $300 million loss this year, <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/limes-loss-to-top-300-million-in-2019">per The Information</a>. Bird <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huawei-launches-foldable-phone-in-china-2019-10">is also thought to be loss-making</a>, although the firm has never confirmed numbers.Meanwhile Europe is producing its own rivals, including Voi, Tier, and Wind.And they say they have a major advantage over their spendthrift peers in the US.Lawrence Leuschner, the cofounder and CEO of Berlin-based scooter startup Tier, thinks he can beat out the competition because the firm is more efficient."The lifetime of our vehicles is higher by multiples than our competitors' and is a driver of efficiency," Leuschner claimed in an interview with Business Insider. "We are profitable in most cities, have strong operations experience, so we can scale faster than anyone else." <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">TierTier scooters</div></div></div>Tier's current stronghold is in Germany but its expansion across Western Europe - with the exception of its largest city, London - continues with more than 40 cities on its roster since its launch in October 2018.Much like other scooter companies, Tier works by unlocking an individual scooter through a phone app. How much you pay per ride depends on the city. In Berlin for example you can unlock a scooter for €1 ($1.1) and pay €0.15 (17 cents) per minute of use. The startup raised a $60 million Series B recently, taking its total funding to $91 million. That's onsiderably smaller than the massive sums raised by Bird ($548 million) and Lime ($765 million), per Crunchbase. Both Bird and Lime are unicorns. Tier declined to comment on valuation but reports in the <a href="https://www.deutsche-startups.de/2019/10/11/tier-mobility-300-millionen/">German press</a> put the company's valuation at $275 million. Leuschner says Tier is more capital efficient than its rivals and a smarter bet for investors in the long run.His argument is that investors are looking for long-term, sustainable growth versus the growth-at-all-costs mentality pioneered by Uber, Silicon Valley's original buzzy mobility startup.Tier is a private company, and doesn't share its financials.But Leuschner's remarks are part of an emerging narrative that investors need to look beyond endless growth as the key metric for tech startups. The tepid (or cancelled) floats for Uber, Lyft, and office-sharing firm WeWork have signalled that pure growth fuelled by huge amounts of money is a risky strategy. Union Square Ventures investor Fred Wilson wrote on his widely read <a href="https://avc.com/2019/09/the-great-public-market-reckoning/">blog</a> that the hype and valuations around private companies largely hasn't translated into public markets. Europe's startups have never had the same access to capital as their Silicon Valley rivals, something that has always been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-europe-has-never-produced-a-google-2019-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">perceived by entrepreneurs and investors as a disadvantage</a>. As fears of a bubble grow, the likes of Tier's Leuschner are turning their frugality to their advantage.Estonia's Bolt (formerly Taxify) is another mobility startup which competes both with Tier and Uber. The firm offers ride-hailing as well as scooters. CEO Markus Villig has previously said the firm is frequently profitable, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-rival-taxify-relaunches-in-london-as-bolt-says-it-is-sometimes-profitable-2019-6?r=US&amp;IR=T">unlike its cash-burning American competitors</a>.<h2>Tier is using replaceable batteries for its scooters, which the firm says is more climate-friendly</h2>Tier recently announced it would be the first e-scooter startup to use<a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20191007005376/en/TIER-Mobility-raises-US60-million-Series-led"> replaceable batteries for its products.</a> Sustainability is key, according to Leuschner, with Tier's ambitions centering on making its transport offering better to prevent climate change. It's familiar territory for the German entrepreneur. Leuschner says he spent his early years taking excess parts from his stepfather's factory to be sold at a local flea market in Germany from the age of nine onwards. He subsequently founded WeBuy, a company that specialized in refurbishing electrical goods.He says that replaceable batteries, alongside a claimed lifetime of between 18 and 24 months for each scooter, is fundamental to Tier having lower operating costs than its competition. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">TierTier's replaceable batteries</div></div></div>If what Leuschner says is true, Tier does have the upper hand. Lime's newer scooters are set to last for more than a year of continuous operation, are mostly recycled and are charged from renewable sources, generally. A spokesman for Bird in the UK disputed the benefits of replaceable batteries and suggested that the environmental impact of the move was not so different to the current process. All scooter companies employ people to go around picking up their scooters, recharge them, and then put them back on the streets. Tier says its shift to replaceable batteries means workers only need to pick up the battery for recharge, while other firms have their whole scooters picked up.Lime did not respond to a request for comment.Leuschner says his desire to act on climate change and create a more sustainable company come from his worldwide travels, including seeing forest fires in Chile and mudslides in Peru.How does this square with the fact that Tier has taken capital from oil-rich UAE's sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala?"We wanted to go the next phase," explains Leuschner. The rapid growth of the anthropogenic space object population, including satellite mega-constellations' that are placed in low <keyword id="6359982" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="earth" source="Orion">Earth</keyword> orbit to deliver broadband internet and other services, are increasingly threatening the orbital space, according to a team of international researchers. The shell bound by the <keyword id="13700577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karman-Line" source="Orion">Karman Line</keyword> at a height of about 80-100 km above the Earth's surface and geosynchronous orbit at about 36,000 km is defined as the orbital space surrounding the Earth. Researchers including from universities of Edinburg (UK), Washington (US), British Columbia (Canada), and astronomers from the <keyword id="59844" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="european-space-agency" source="Orion">European Space Agency</keyword> (ESA) have called for immediate action to protect the orbital space around Earth by rules and regulations similar to those that safeguard the planet's oceans and the atmosphere. Writing in Nature Astronomy, the team argued that the rise in the number of satellites is polluting the night sky for astronomers and stargazers. It is also increasing the risk of objects colliding in space and potentially even striking aircraft when they fall back to Earth. "We rely on the orbital space environment by looking through it, as well as by working within it. Hence, we should consider damage to professional astronomy, public stargazing, and the cultural importance of the sky, as well as the sustainability of commercial, civic, and military activity in space," the researchers wrote. "We urge decision makers and policymakers to consider the environmental impacts of all aspects of satellite constellations, including launch, operation and de-orbit, and to work with all stakeholders to co-create a shared, ethical, sustainable approach to space," they added. In late 2018, about 2,000 active satellites circled Earth. The team warned that the number could exceed 100,000 by 2030. While companies such as <keyword id="6360701" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpaceX" source="Orion">SpaceX</keyword> and <keyword id="2686914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="OneWeb" source="Orion">OneWeb</keyword> are leading the way in placing satellite mega-constellations, others are interested, including Rwanda, which recently filed an application to launch 327,000 satellites in a single project, the Guardian reported. "We really need to get our act together. This is about recognising that the problems we see in orbit are the same as those we see when we worry about the land, the oceans and the atmosphere. We need to knock heads together and say how can we solve this problem," Andy Lawrence, Professor of astronomy at the University of Edinburgh, was quoted as saying. The scientists argue that while there is robust regulation to ensure satellites are launched safely and transmit signals only within certain frequency bands, there is almost nothing to govern the impact of satellites on the night sky, astronomy, Earth's atmosphere or the orbital environment. The visible presence of so many satellites also undermines the ability to enjoy the night sky. Further, they noted that light reflecting off satellites can ruin astronomical observations by leaving streaks across images, while their broadcasts can drown out the faint, natural radio signals that astronomers study to understand some of the most exotic objects in the cosmos, the report said. The social media app developed by Alexis Barreyat, as the name suggests, focuses on keeping things real by restricting filters and editing tools on the platform. Alexis, the founder, released the app back in 2020 on iOS and Play Store. He is a former GoPro employee who wants to bring authenticity to social media and make content unfiltered and real. The posts can come in the form of photos including snapshots taken from the phone. The app is offering little but it is standing apart with its features and functionality. It has seen a surge of interest in recent days. Since January, BeReal has seen a growth of 315% in downloads. Once a day, BeReal sends you a notification telling you to post your BeReal for the day. Users can take a photo of whatever they’re doing and they only get 2 minutes to prepare. When a user is ready to take the photo, BeReal is going to use the front and back cameras at the same time. No retouching, no filters and no retakes are allowed. Remember, every time you view someone else’s photo you have to post your own. Each image can be shared on a global feed or with your friends.
