But is the stove really worth all the hype? Let's find out.<br /><br />The <keyword id="89242" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-cooker" source="Orion">solar cooker</keyword> has two components: the main stove, which is attached via a cable to a solar PV panel that sticks to the roof. After the initial set-up, the company claims that daily captured sunlight will be enough to cook enough for a family of four during the day and night. In addition, it can even be plugged into the electric grid when cloudy days hinder effective charging.<br /><br />The stove comes in two variants with either a single or a double cooker, which is usually enough for the daily Indian meal. In addition, they claim that cooking times are similar to an LPG burner. In comparison, LPG costs over Rs 1,000 for the standard 14.2 kg cylinder, which usually lasts a family that regularly cooks about a month at max.<br /><br />While there are obvious long-term energy and financial benefits since the Surya Nutan reduces cooking costs to basically nil, there are still ways to go before any form of <keyword id="12335463" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ecooking" source="Orion">eCooking</keyword> can be properly incorporated within all Indian households.<br /><br />According to the 2020 India Residential Energy Survey, only about five per cent of Indian homes use eCooking devices, and this is mainly concentrated only among the wealthiest groups (85% of the user base).<br /><br />Additionally, many believe eCooking isn't a feasible alternative either, especially among non-users; therefore some core values need challenging before an actual transition can occur. Perhaps, Modi's appreciation and Indian Oil's status as an Indian household brand could lend the necessary push the solar cooker needs to move into every Indian kitchen. The company’s smaller peer Butterfly Gandhimathi has hiked prices by 5% in December but, yet another one, Hawkins hasn’t followed suit yet. <br /><br />The price of copper is near an all-time high nearly twice of what it was five years ago. So, cable makers like Finolex Cables and Polycab have already passed the pressure on to their customers. KEI Industries, which makes cables, is revising prices every 15 days based on the prices of the key raw material copper, Edelweiss said. <br /><br />And, that means the cost of production is significantly higher for electrical appliance makers like Havells and V-Guard Industries. Especially in the case of V-Guard, which is popular for its inverters and voltage stabilisers, over 46% of the cost is copper, according to analysts at Edelweiss. <br /><br />Air cooler major Symphony raised prices in January, long before the summer sun started to sting. Why will air conditioners be left behind? Blue Star, which raised prices by 5-8% in January, will push prices further up by another 3-5% from April, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/durables/blue-star-to-increase-prices-in-first-week-of-april-md/articleshow/81648037.cms">Managing Director B Thiagarajan told the Economic Times on March 23</a>. <br /><br />A lot of dream homes were stalled by the pandemic and the lockdown. While the construction of these homes has resumed in full gusto, the cement needed to build these is at least 7-8% on average in the last one year. Even for salaried employees in India, who form a small proportion of the total workforce, the <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/jobs/india-inc-to-offer-77-average-salary-hike-in-2021-aon/story/432174.html#:~:text=Global%20professional%20services%20firm%20Aon's,6.1%20per%20cent%20in%202020.">average rise in remuneration is likely to be 7.7%</a>. But a big chunk of the rise may not land in their bank accounts ⁠— it will go into provident fund and gratuity contribution, instead⁠ — because the new labour codes would have kicked in from April 1. <br /><br />Of course, if the second wave triggers another economic crisis, many families may not even have the same amount of cushion from their past savings. In the last five years, the average annual household savings in India has grown 64%. From Maruti to Nissan, from Hero to Havells, from cotton to cement– everyday products are set to get more expensive in India

<em>This is the second in a series of articles analysing the impact of 5G mobile technology on people's everyday lives.</em><br /><br /> In Hangzhou, capital of eastern China's Zhejiang province and one of the country's major technology hubs, evidence of the city's smart infrastructure can be gleaned from how its public services function. Police officers are notified of major car accidents soon after they happen, traffic lights automatically adjust to changes in the volume of vehicles on the road, and in emergencies, fire trucks and ambulances are not stopped by a single red light until they arrive at the scene.<br /><br /> Those advances are enabled by Hangzhou's City Brain project, a cloud computing and artificial intelligence-driven urban traffic-management system. It covers a total area of 420 square kilometres, which is about the size of seven Manhattans - referring to the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City.<br /><br /> When 5G mobile services start to roll out worldwide from next year, smart cities such as Hangzhou are expected to get smarter as the next-generation wireless technology helps industries realise the full potential of the internet of things (IoT).<br /><br /> "From 2G to 3G to 4G, all of them serve people," said Cui Kai, a Beijing-based IoT analyst with technology research firm IDC. "But 5G, from the beginning of its infrastructure design, has the internet of things in mind."<br /><br /> IoT envisions a self-configuring, adaptive and complex network that interconnects physical objects, each containing embedded technology to communicate, gather data and interact with mobile applications or other networks.<br /><br /> The stakes are high for industries around the world, as global spending on IoT is forecast to exceed US$1 trillion in 2022, up from an estimated US$745 billion this year, according to IDC. It said adoption of IoT was happening across industries, in governments and in consumers' daily lives.<br /><br /> Data generated by connected devices is now helping companies run more efficiently and gain insight into business processes, while consumers' access to data is changing how they are informed about the status of households, vehicles and family members, as well as their own health and fitness.<br /><br /> "The next chapter of IoT is just beginning, as we see a shift from digitally enabling the physical to automating and augmenting the human experience with a connected world," said Carrie MacGillivray, vice-president for IoT and mobility at IDC, in a recent report.<br /><br /> That shift is likely to become apparent as 5G networks are rolled out around the world. With peak data rates up to 20 times faster than 4G, 5G will serve as "the connective tissue" for IoT, autonomous cars, smart cities and new mobile applications - providing the backbone for the industrial internet, according to a Deloitte report.<br /><br /> On the consumer side, 5G smartphone users will be able to send high-resolution 4K video within a few seconds, and both video games and apps based on augmented and virtual reality technologies will be seamless.<br /><br /> The 5G networks will also be able to support the growing number of connected devices globally, from fitness-tracking watches to internet-linked televisions and smart speakers at home.<br /><br /> The International Telecommunications Union, the United Nations agency overseeing development of the "IMT 2020" global standard for 5G, said the new wireless technology would support 1 million connected devices per square kilometre; 1 millisecond latency (representing the nearly instant time a packet of data takes to get from one point to another); greater efficiency in terms of power and use of radio spectrum; and a peak data download rate of up to 20 gigabits per second.<br /><br /> <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3006582/power-change-world-heres-why-us-and-china-are-fighting-over-our-5g">With the power to change the world, here's why the US and China are fighting over our 5G future</a><br /><br /> The agency works in tandem with the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, an international collaboration of seven telecoms standard development organisations, which has approved the much-anticipated global technology specifications for 5G. That has kicked off work on initial deployments this year by some of the world's largest telecoms network operators.<br /><br /> At the crux of many IoT applications is latency. For a YouTube viewer, it means the delay between clicking the play button and the moment when the video starts streaming. 5G networks will provide better latency than the average 50 milliseconds on 4G networks, enabling IoT applications that require near instantaneous data transmission such as remote surgery.<br /><br /> <br /><br /> In March, China conducted its first remote surgery using robots with the support of a 5G network deployed by telecoms operator China Mobile and supplied by Huawei Technologies, according to state media.<br /><br /> During the three-hour procedure, a surgeon implanted a neurostimulator device into the brain of a Parkinson's disease patient in Beijing with the aid of robotic arms, which were remotely controlled about 3,000km away. Remote surgeries are widely expected to enable more doctors to help their colleagues at smaller institutions or in disaster areas.<br /><br /> Low latency is also key to the smooth operation of autonomous vehicles. Sensors in a self-driving car gather information - from road conditions and nearby obstacles to traffic accidents along the way - and send the data to the car's on-board computer or to a cloud computing platform to make instant decisions.<br /><br /> <br /><br /> Seamless machine-to-machine communication would also be an important asset in military operations. A group of soldiers, for example, can wear smart wristwatches to know each other's location and vital signs as they operate in a tropical forest, for example, where satellite communications do not work.<br /><br /> While 4G now allows up to 100 devices to talk with each other simultaneously within a radius of 500 meters, 5G can handle a lot more devices using the same communications protocol, according to Wilson Chow, a telecoms analyst with PwC China.<br /><br /> <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/gear/article/2189069/chinas-tech-moguls-bet-5g-help-lift-economy-amid-increased-security">China's tech moguls bet on 5G to help lift economy amid increased security scrutiny in the West</a><br /><br /> 5G's ability to handle massive amounts of data in ultra-fast speed also comes to play in industrial manufacturing and supply chains.<br /><br /> While robots have already taken over the assembly lines in car assembly plants, 5G will allow someone sitting at headquarters to monitor the operations of dozens of factories in different cities in real time. That would be made possible by chips installed in fast-moving machinery, such as robotic arms and conveyor belts.<br /><br /> <br /><br /> In February, Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson and China Unicom unveiled their 5G-powered <keyword id="24019" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="automation">automation</keyword> project at the Port of Qingdao in the eastern coastal province of Shandong. The initiative aims to slash 70 per cent of labour costs in one of the world's busiest container terminals.<br /><br /> "In the future, manufacturing plants and retailers can achieve efficiency with improved workflows because every data point will be gathered, processed and analysed in real time," said Chow.<br /><br /> For consumers, 5G is expected to broaden the use of smart home devices like voice-activated speakers and other advanced internet-linked appliances. And its unique qualities don't stop there: basmati rice is also known for its light and airy texture, floral aroma, and nutty flavor. According to <a href="https://www.ice.edu/">Institute of Culinary Education</a> chef <a href="https://www.chefpalakpatel.com/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Palak Patel</a>, authentic basmati rice also has a distinctive sheen to it and is tapered towards the end. </p><p>Today, basmati rice is typically grown in India (especially the foothills of the Himalayan mountains), Nepal, and Pakistan. It's believed to have been <a href="https://www.iatp.org/news/basmati-developed-at-least-250-years-ago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed by farmers in India and Pakistan</a> at least 250 years ago. Fittingly, the name seems to be <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40003-011-0011-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">derived from the Sanskrit words</a> for "possessing" and "fragrance." </p><p>One thing that sets basmati rice apart from other long-grain rice is that it's typically aged for nine to 18 months in order to reduce the moisture content and intensify the flavor, aroma, and other cooking characteristics.</p><p>You'll know a quality basmati rice by its color, says Patel, since the aging process also changes its hue to a very light brown color.</p><p>Basmati rice is most common in Indian cuisine, but it works just as well in pilafs and salads as it does with curries and braised meat dishes. Here's how to cook this fluffy, fragrant rice for the best results.</p><h2>Quick basmati rice to water ratios</h2><ul><li><strong>Stovetop:</strong> 1 cup rice to 1.25 cups water</li><li><strong>Instant Pot: </strong>1 cup rice to 1.25 cups water</li><li><strong>Rice cooker: </strong>1 cup rice to 1.5 cups water</li></ul><h2><strong>How to cook basmati rice on the stove</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A bowl of raw basmati rice" height="1264" width="1685" msid="84877090" hostid="261"></div><p>For every cup of basmati rice, you'll need about 1.25 cups of water.<br /><br /></p><ol><li><strong>Rinse the rice.</strong> Place the basmati rice in a fine-mesh sieve or strainer and rinse it gently under cold running water. </li><li><strong>Bring a pot of water to a boil.</strong> Add salt to taste. At this stage, Patel recommends adding some additional oil to coat each grain.</li></ol><h2><strong>How to cook basmati rice in an Instant Pot</strong></h2><p>For every cup of basmati rice, you'll need about 1.25 cups of water, the same ratio as on the stove.<br /><br /></p><ol><li><strong>Rinse. </strong>Run the basmati rice under water until the water runs clear.</li><li><strong>Cook.</strong> Add the rice, water, salt, butter or oil, and desired aromatics to the <a href="https://www.insider.com/instant-pot-rice">Instant Pot</a> and set the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-pressure-cooker-instant-pot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pressure cooker</a> to six minutes on high.</li><li><strong>Wait.</strong> After the six minutes is up, wait an additional 10 minutes for the pressure to naturally release, then remove the lid. </li><li><strong>Cool.</strong> Remove the rice from the Instant Pot so no extra moisture gets into the rice. If you soak it, be sure to decrease the ratio to 1 cup of water for every cup of rice.</li><li>To make a pilaf, replace some or all of the water with chicken or vegetable stock.</li><li>Bay leaves, cardamom pods, star anise, curry leaves, turmeric, cinnamon sticks, and cumin all make excellent flavor enhancers for basmati rice. Sauté them in oil before adding the rice and water to the saucepan and bringing it all to a boil.</li><li>Sautéd carrots and peas, as well as toasted cashews, can add both color and texture when stirred into the rice.</li><li>If you'd like to use herbs, such as chopped basil, flat-leaf parsley, or oregano, stir them in once the rice is done cooking.</li><li>For even more flavor, cook some onion, garlic, and ginger in a pot coated with oil. Toss in your uncooked rice and coat it in the mixture. Then, pour in the water/broth, bring the rice to a boil, and simmer until the rice is tender.</li></ul><h2>How to store and reheat basmati rice</h2><p>Patel doesn't recommend freezing basmati rice, as it can compromise the texture. However, it can be refrigerated for up to one week stored in an airtight container. </p><p>While Patel says microwaving is the best way to revive basmati rice, you can also steam it on the stove, though this method will take longer. No matter which route you choose, Patel advises adding a few tablespoons of water to the rice before reheating it to ensure it doesn't dry out. Gently break up any clumps of rice with a fork first.</p><p>If you decide to use the microwave, cover the dish with a damp paper towel, and cook it on high for one to two minutes, depending on how much rice you're heating up.</p><p>To reheat the rice on the stovetop, heat it in a covered saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally. </p><h2>Insider's takeaway</h2><p>Basmati rice is particularly fitting for Indian dishes like biryani and tikka masala, but it's also versatile enough to serve with a range of meat, seafood, poultry, and vegetables, and makes a flavorful base for pilafs.</p><p>The most important step of cooking basmati rice is to rinse it beforehand, as this helps to get rid of any excess starch on the surface that might cause the rice to stick together. It was a glass jar filled with human feces.</p><p>"It's good to be reminded, in there could be over 200 trillion rotavirus particles, 20 billion Shigella bacteria, and 100,000 parasitic worm eggs," Gates told the crowd, which had gathered in Beijing, China for an event called the Reinvented Toilet Expo.</p><p>The jar of poo was used to make a point: Around the world, in places without proper sanitation or sewage systems, there's much more than a jar's worth of unsanitary human waste sitting around. </p><p>"That's what kids, when they're out playing, they are being exposed to all the time," Gates said, noting the link between bad sanitation and disease, death, and malnutrition.</p><p>To address that problem, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation started its <a href="https://docs.gatesfoundation.org/Documents/Fact_Sheet_Reinvent_the_Toilet_Challenge.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reinvent the Toilet Challenge</a> in 2011. The initiative funded $200 million in grants for universities around the world to develop a next-generation toilet. People who come in contact with fecal matter face a risk of deadly infections and chronic health problems, since h<span>uman feces carry pathogens like E. coli, Streptococcus, hepatitis A and E, and more</span><span>. The definitive answer, according to science</a></em></p><p>He estimates that illness from poor sanitation costs the world <a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/Development/Reinvent-the-Toilet-Expo-speech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over $223 billion per year</a> in lost wages and extra healthcare.</p><p>With <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gates-foundation-ceo-sue-desmond-hellman-let-women-end-poverty-in-africa-2018-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stratospheric rates of population growth in cities across Africa and Asia</a>, the problem is only set to get worse. </p><p>"Unless we do something, the cycle of disease will actually be accelerated," Gates said. </p><p>Gates doesn't think it's practical to expect the entire world to connect their homes to yet-to-be-built sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants. That's why he has been on a quest to do for toilets what he argues Microsoft did for computing: get the business off a centralized, "mainframe" system.</p><p>Gates started by asking engineers at universities around the world a simple but yet-unanswered question: "could you leapfrog the long-accepted 'gold standard' of sanitation?" </p><p>"A decade ago, I didn't think I would be able to tell you so much about poop," Gates said.</p><h2>The first generation of sewer-free toilets is here, but they aren't cheap yet</h2><p>After seven years and $200 million of investment, the first batch of products from the "Reinvent the Toilet Challenge" is being tested in locations around India, Africa, and China. </p><p>One of the first new toilets is the solar-powered Eco-san system, pictured below. Based on technology <a href="http://hoffmann.caltech.edu/research/contribution.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">developed at Cal Tech,</a> the Eco-san extracts clean water from human waste and reuses it for future flushing.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>©Gates Archive/Shawn Koh</span></p><p class="caption">An Eco-san Toilet at Yixing Huankeyuan Elementary School in Yixing City, Jiangsu Province, China.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Other models are also in the works from companies and universities around the world. </p><p>The <a href="http://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/post/newgenerator-bringing-clean-water-and-energy-south-africa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of South Florida's NewGenerator</a> treatment system also runs on solar energy and can be hooked up to any existing toilet. It uses a nano-membrane filter (kind of like a coffee filter) with feces-digesting anaerobic bacteria inside to filter clean water out of the waste.</p><p>Another toilet from <a href="https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/case-studies/research-case-studies/nano-membrane-toilet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cranfield University in the UK</a> comes equipped with a little trap door odor barrier and scraper so that it requires no water for flushing. Clean water is filtered out of waste via a large, orange screw in the tank, and solid waste is burned inside the toilet's combustor, which converts the waste into ash and energy. (Thankfully, this all happens out of sight of the people who are using the toilet.)</p><p>"Heat from the burning is used to help dry the next batch of solids," as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqcknE_Ic_g%20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gates explained in a video</a>. He added, "it's a very clever toilet." </p><p>Yet another model, from Swiss engineering firm Helbling, is called the HTClean Toilet and it functions like a pressure cooker for poo. The immense pressure and heat helps the waste separate into water and solids that aren't toxic.</p><p><a href="https://pratt.duke.edu/about/news/coimbatore-sanitation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Duke University</a> has also started testing its Gates-funded toilet this year at a textile mill in Coimbatore, India. For now, the new toilets are going to be used at schools, apartment complexes, and community bathroom areas, Gates said.</p><p>But his eventual goal is for off-grid toilets to be used in homes around the world. He <span>told the crowd in Beijing that he's ready to spend an additional $200 million developing the technology for those next-generation toilets. They take in toilet waste, kill pathogens in the sewage, and convert it into "products with commercial value - like clean water, electricity, and fertilizer," Gates said.
