Big burgers, big malls, big houses. Buying a car? I'll supersize that too, please. Last year, US buyers gobbled up more <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/02/ford-pickup-remains-americas-top-selling-truck-for-45th-year.html">Ford F-Series pickup trucks</a> than any other model for the 40th year running. Over half of new vehicles sold were some kind of SUV. But how much car does the average person really need, and at what point does a genuine desire for utility cross a line into good old-fashioned American excess?These are the questions electric-vehicle startup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrameccanica-solo-ev-electric-vehicle-with-only-one-seat-2021-9">ElectraMeccanica</a> poses with its debut model, the outrageous-looking, three-wheeled Solo, so named because that's how you'll be traveling if you purchase one of the single-seaters. The thinking goes like this: Most people drive alone most of the time. And typically, they aren't traveling that far or carrying that much stuff. In turn, a single-seat vehicle with around 100 miles of range and a trunk that can fit a few grocery bags should satisfy most peoples' needs more cheaply and efficiently than a conventional car. <div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="1875" width="2500" msid="91132958" hostid="261"></div>The Canadian upstart says the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solo-electric-car-electrameccanica-solo-ev-review-pictures-range-price-2021-10">$18,500 model</a> will revolutionize the way we get around cities. It's so sure of this that it's working on a new factory in Arizona to supplement the supply of Solos coming from a contracted manufacturer in China.Eager to put such lofty goals to the test, I jumped at the opportunity when ElectraMeccanica offered a short test drive in downtown Manhattan earlier this month. <h2>First impressions</h2>Walking up to the Solo for the first time, I was shocked at just how small it is. In photos, it looks like half a car; in person, it's more like a quarter. Inside, however, I found there was plenty of room for my 6-foot-1 frame. I'd call it cozy, but not cramped. <div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="3333" width="2500" msid="91132960" hostid="261"></div>Buy a Solo and you're treated to many of the comforts you'd find in a regular car: heat, air conditioning, a radio with Bluetooth, heated seats, and a little cup holder. The interior feels basic and a little cheap, but then again, the Solo isn't pretending to be high-end.<h2>Driving the Solo EV</h2>I only had about 20 minutes behind the wheel of the Solo, so I didn't get to take it to its claimed top speed of 80 mph, experience parking, or subject it to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mclaren-gt-supercar-grand-tourer-costco-it-went-shockingly-well-2020-11">the Costco test</a>. But I got a sense of what it's like to drive a Solo in a congested urban environment. <div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="3489" width="2500" msid="91132963" hostid="261"></div>Pulling away from a stop, I half-expected the Solo to aggressively accelerate forward like many electric cars do. But it didn't. The 56-horsepower Solo isn't terribly quick, but driving it was still a thrill; it's so low to the ground that you feel almost like you're zipping around in a go-kart that escaped the track. I'll concede that New York's potholed streets can give any vehicle a hard time, but ride quality felt lacking. The Solo conveys every bump in the road to your rear end and bounces around when the going gets rough. Braking required an unexpected amount of effort, but I got used to it pretty quickly. <div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="1875" width="2500" msid="91132965" hostid="261"></div>While I can absolutely see the Solo's diminutive size as an asset in many situations — like parking and maneuvering around double-parked cars — it was more of a liability on the mean streets of Manhattan. Several times during my test drive, I felt utterly invisible to the big SUVs, pickups, and trucks hulking down the road around me. I'm being totally sincere when I say that the Solo could benefit from the kind of flag you sometimes see on shopping carts and recumbent bikes. <div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="1549" width="2500" msid="91132968" hostid="261"></div>The absolute best thing about driving the Solo is the attention it gets. Everywhere I went, people grinned and pointed, craning their necks to get a better look at the tiny, shoe-shaped car-thing silently scooting by. At a busy intersection, one beaming pedestrian enthusiastically waved me through the crosswalk despite having the right of way. This almost never happens. <h2>The verdict</h2>The Solo drives competently, can squeeze into the tiniest of parking spots, is way more efficient than a typical car, and scores off the charts in smiles per mile. If people shopped completely rationally, I bet many would realize that a Solo meets their needs. But it'll probably be a tough sell in a country where minicars like the Smart ForTwo and <a href="https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/fiat-500-discontinued-2020/">Fiat 500</a> never saw much success, and those can seat more than one person.<div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="2033" width="2500" msid="91132969" hostid="261"></div>Driving the Solo, I got the sense that it may have more potential as a vehicle for campus police, parking enforcement, and the like, rather than commuters. And the market agrees. Of the 100-some-odd Solos that have made it to customers since deliveries began in October, around 60% have gone to commercial buyers, ElectraMeccanica CEO Kevin Pavlov told me. He was anticipating a sales breakdown more like 50-50. <div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="1875" width="2500" msid="91132970" hostid="261"></div>According to Pavlov, businesses and fleets like the Solo because it's cheap to run and doubles as an eye-grabbing, rolling billboard. ElectraMeccanica has a Solo oriented toward deliveries that has an expanded trunk area. Pavlov says it can fit 12 large pizzas and four two-liter bottles of soda. Will the ElectraMeccanica Solo turn urban transport on its head? I'm not sure the company will sell enough of them to accomplish that. Is the trike an intriguing, unique option that could appeal to buyers looking for something bold, weird, or hyper efficient? Absolutely.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>I've driven more than 20 different electric vehicles. </li><li>I've enjoyed most of them, but I'd steer clear of three particular EVs if I was ready to buy. </li></ul>In the course of testing 24 electric vehicles over the last couple of years, I've gotten behind the wheel of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-electric-cars-rivian-r1s-hyundai-ioniq-5-porsche-taycan-2022-12">some true gems</a> — vehicles that I'd buy in a heartbeat if given the chance. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-taycan-turbo-s-cross-turismo-electric-car-review-2022-6">badass, $200,000 Porsche station wagon</a> that zips to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds? Yes please. A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rivian-r1s-electric-suv-photos-review-range-tesla-2022-7">luxurious, four-wheel-drive SUV from Rivian</a> that eats off-road trails for breakfast? Sign me up. While my experiences have overall been positive, three vehicles stand out as ones I'd steer clear of. I'm not saying nobody should buy these cars — by all means, have at it. But for my personal tastes and needs, their downsides outweigh their benefits. <h2>ElectraMeccanica Solo</h2><div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="817" width="1090" msid="98065768" hostid="261"></div>Scratch that — maybe I've only driven 23.5 electric cars, given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrameccanica-solo-ev-review-drive-electric-vehicle-three-wheels-2022-4">the ElectraMeccanica Solo's</a> inclusion on this list. The single-seat, three-wheeler challenges the American desire for bigger and bigger vehicles, which I think is great. Surely, many are taking up more space and spewing more emissions than they need to. <div type="image" title="The ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="2033" width="2500" msid="98065771" hostid="261"></div>The Solo seems like a cheat code for getting around some cities. It has a little trunk for groceries, a tiny footprint for fitting into practically any parking spot, and it's enclosed, making it more comfortable than an electric bike or motorcycle. But it doesn't exactly suit my driving needs. My trips typically take me far away from the city, often with another person or some bikes in tow. The Solo and its 100 miles of claimed range don't quite fit the bill. Plus, during my 20-minute test drive in downtown Manhattan, I felt dangerously exposed and invisible among all the tall SUVs and trucks. <h2>GMC Hummer EV</h2><div type="image" title="The GMC Hummer EV Edition 1." height="1875" width="2500" msid="98065776" hostid="261"></div>The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gmc-hummer-ev-review-price-electric-pickup-truck-2022-11">new $113,000 Hummer pickup's</a> sheer enormity and excessiveness makes it fun to tool around in for a weekend. It feels like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hummer-ev-photos-electric-pickup-truck-review-gmc-edition-1-2022-11">a ridiculously huge and expensive toy</a>. But it's much, much more vehicle than I (or most people) need. Although its rear-wheel steering helps maneuverability, its many blind spots and tank-sized footprint make city driving nerve-racking. Even when you get out on the highway, the Hummer feels unsettlingly large. More than once, I peered down at a puny sedan passing me and wondered how long it had been cruising in my blind spot.<div type="image" title="The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1." height="1667" width="2500" msid="98065779" hostid="261"></div>It's also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gmc-hummer-ev-efficiency-weight-electric-vehicles-pickup-trucks-2022-12">the least efficient EV on the market</a>, which kind of defeats the purpose of ditching gasoline in the first place. Other electric pickups out there — the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning — are more sensibly sized, less in-your-face, and just as functional. <h2>Nissan Leaf</h2><div type="image" title="The 2022 Nissan Leaf." height="1595" width="2126" msid="98065782" hostid="261"></div>The Nissan Leaf is one of the OGs of the EV world. Although it was a pioneer when it first launched more than a decade ago and remains one of the most <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-cars-affordable-toyota-chevy-hyundai-kia-nissan-tesla-2023-1">budget-friendly EVs you can buy</a>, it can't beat modern offerings. The base, $27,800 Leaf is EPA-rated for only 149 miles of range, significantly less than other options and not enough for confident road-tripping. The $43,000 Tesla Model 3 delivers 272 miles of range, while the $26,500 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chevy-bolt-euv-cheap-electric-car-suv-price-2022-12">Chevrolet Bolt EV</a> rates at 259 miles. The pricier Leaf SV Plus still comes in at only 215 miles. <div type="image" title="2023 Nissan Leaf" height="3314" width="4419" msid="98065785" hostid="261"></div>Plus, the Leaf <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-car-ev-nissan-leaf-review-pros-cons-2022-3">uses a different fast-charging port</a> than the rest of the industry, limiting the stations where it can be refueled. Given the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electric-vehicle-chargers-infrastructure-adoption-automakers-drivers-startup-2022-11">sorry state of EV-charging infrastructure today</a>, I'd prefer to have access to all the plugs possible. Still, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-leaf-revew-cheapest-affordable-electric-car-in-us-2021-10">Leaf is a solid, low-cost choice</a> for someone who doesn't need to drive all that far and can charge primarily at home.

Electric cars I'd never buy, after driving 24 different models

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11893543" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ev" source="Orion">EV</keyword> startup ElectraMeccanica plans to deliver its first tiny, one-seat EV before the end of 2021.</li><li>The one-seat EV is called the "Solo," and ElectraMeccanica's targeting personal and commercial use.</li><li>Early Solos will be made in China, but localized models will eventually be built in Mesa, Arizona.</li></ul>Today, <keyword id="11993264" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric" source="Orion">electric</keyword> cars are all the talk. Whether it's the Tesla Model 3 sedan or the Mustang Mach-E crossover, <keyword id="11947664" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="evs" source="Orion">EVs</keyword> have taken the market by storm. But nearly all of the popular electric cars have one shared trait: They're passenger cars. Canadian EV startup ElectraMeccanica wants to change that. In 2015, investor and motorsport enthusiast Jerry Kroll cofounded and formerly led ElectraMeccanica with a goal of challenging the concept of urban <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">transportation</keyword>. Instead of building a traditional commuter car, Kroll aimed for something far less conventional.Kroll's idea to rethink the automobile was to develop an affordable electric city car with just one seat, and ElectraMeccanica's current CEO, Paul Rivera, emphasized that ElectraMeccanica's creation would blend the space between micromobility and traditional transportation. "In micromobility, you've got everything from the little electric scooters and you've got little electric bikes," Rivera said. "Then on the other side, you've got passenger cars. And even in the electric-vehicle space, you still have three or four empty seats."<div type="image" title="A black ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="2677" width="4014" msid="86399897" hostid="261"></div>The idea makes sense: If we as a society are going all-in on electric power, we might as well decrease our physical footprint - and thus how much energy it takes to power the vehicles - as well.After the brand settled on a one-seater design, ElectraMeccanica decided to unironically name its creation the "Solo." In 2020, the brand announced it would <a href="https://www.electrive.com/2020/08/26/electra-meccanica-starts-solo-production-in-china/">begin Solo production</a> with its partner, Chinese manufacturing firm Zongshen.Despite having three wheels and just one seat, Rivera said safety and comfort were the highest priorities in the build. "We went through great lengths to put a lot of safety in that vehicle, even though it's a three-wheeled vehicle and it gets classified as a motorcycle," Rivera said. "It still has front and rear crumple zones, it has side impact protection, it has a roll bar inside, it has torque-limiting stability control."On the inside of the vehicle, it has all of the accouterments and comfort features that you're used to in a passenger car: It has a heated seat, it has air conditioning, it has heat, it has Bluetooth."<div type="image" title="The interior of the ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="2680" width="4020" msid="86399899" hostid="261"></div>With its compact form and low price of just $18,500, Rivera foresees the Solo integrating itself in a variety of capacities, eventually building up its own ecosystem. To create the ecosystem, ElectraMeccanica aimed at two large markets: personal and fleet.On the personal side, the benefits of an affordable electric car are most apparent. "It can be used in the retail space and it's for people who understand and want an <keyword id="11938291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicle" source="Orion">electric vehicle</keyword> but haven't been able to acquire one because of a price point that was unattainable before," Rivera told Insider.As for the fleet side, implementations in anything from last-mile delivery to car-sharing are possible. "If you could share that vehicle either in college campuses or in high-rise residential complexes - and walk up and unlock it with your iPhone or your Android device, and be able to take it out for two hours or four hours and take it and bring it back - it's the perfect vehicle," Rivera said.<div type="image" title="A black ElectraMeccanica Solo." height="1366" width="2048" msid="86399900" hostid="261"></div>To keep the purchase price low, ElectraMeccanica opted for a direct-to-consumer model. This move is similar to that of Tesla and it cuts out the need for a traditional dealership structure.At $18,500, the Solo undercuts every other U.S. sold mass market EV, and while it can't qualify for the federal tax credit, it can for state ones. For example, qualifying Oregon residents can obtain two separate $2,500 rebates for purchasing a Solo, bringing the price down to $13,500. As for future vehicles, ElectraMeccanica plans on eventually launching a reasonably affordable, classic-inspired electric convertible dubbed the "Tofino." While there's no release date yet, Rivera said ElectraMeccanica's focus is getting the Solo out to customers at its <a href="https://investors.electrameccanica.com/press-releases/detail/142/electrameccanica-to-launch-customer-deliveries-of-flagship">Oct. 4 launch event</a>."I'm a car guy and we've got aspirations to do other things, but just to be very clear: For us, I believe that we need to deliver first on the plan," Rivera told Insider. "The plan is to put the Solo on the road first and build credibility."

In the US, there's no shortage of options when you're shopping for a car. You can find an unlimited inventory of four-door sedans, coupes, wagons, trucks, vans — and an overabundance of crossovers and SUVs and (crossover SUV coupes), supply chain crisis and semiconductor chip shortage notwithstanding.But I just wonder if it always makes sense to have four wheels and several empty seats when I'm on the road. What about an in-between car for when I just need to run a quick errand, pick up food, or simply drive solo to my destination? And what if that in-between car could be a clean-energy vehicle I could plug into a wall outlet in my garage?I had a couple weeks in October to think about those questions when I got the keys to a SOLO EV, a three-wheeled, one-seater electric car <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/electrameccanica-solo-ev-electric-vehicle-with-only-one-seat-2021-9">from ElectraMeccanica</a>.<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1875" width="2500" msid="87822697" hostid="261"></div>So, let's get the obvious out of the way: yes, the SOLO EV looks quirky. People often stopped to take pictures of it as it sat in the driveway. One person jokingly asked: "Where's the rest of it?"<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1875" width="2500" msid="87822700" hostid="261"></div>But the more I zipped around Los Angeles in it during the warm early days of fall, the more I wanted to drive. The comfortable, well-bolstered seat, air-conditioning, and Bluetooth audio made the SOLO EV feel like my own personal rocket. It quite easily gets you to an 80 mile-per-hour top speed, which I found to be plenty for the highway. "We've been working to really, truly tune into the personal <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">transportation</keyword> needs of our customers." That's Kevin Pavlov, the CEO of ElectraMeccanica. He and the company's chief financial officer, Bal Bhullar, sat down with me at an October delivery event where early reservation holders drove away in their own SOLO EVs.Who really needs a one-seater electric car though? It's a fair question. Pavlov said he's confident there is a sizable market for the SOLO, be it as a fleet vehicle for last-mile deliveries, for college campuses, and beyond. "I think the market's going to keep telling us where the niches go and that provides us the time to continue to make more personalized answers," he said.<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1875" width="2500" msid="87822704" hostid="261"></div>We're in the early aughts of an automotive revolution right now. Battery electric vehicles are becoming more popular as automakers introduce new models and governments make plans to phase out internal combustion engines over the next decade. Where you once could count the number of available <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-cars" source="Orion">electric cars</keyword> on one hand, there are now dozens available, and many more in the pipeline. And they're getting less expensive, too. The SOLO EV can be had for $18,500.Thankfully, all of the talk about range anxiety in those early days of the electric car is pretty much moot now. Most electric vehicles can travel at least 200 miles on a full charge.<h2>Range anxiety is overrated, anyway</h2>After a few short trips close to home in the SOLO EV, I started to wonder how far I could stretch its 100-mile range. On the surface it sounds paltry, but considering drivers will mostly use this for short commutes and jaunts about town, 100 miles is truly more than enough.Pavlov summed it up poetically: "Some people will drive 10 miles, some will go 30 miles. Other people want to drive it to work. And some will drive this car to go find themselves."And that's when I had an idea. I thought about the very first car review I did for Business Insider back in 2015 when I drove what was then the brand-new Volvo XC90 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2016-volvo-xc90-road-trip-la-to-san-francisco-2015-10">from LA to San Francisco on one tank of gas</a>, and thought I'd try for a long-ish trip in the SOLO EV. Not really to find myself, but to prove that range anxiety is indeed overrated.So I planned to take the SOLO eastward, from LA to the high desert, a roughly 75-mile, one-way drive.Status at the start of the trip: 99% charge.<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1875" width="2500" msid="87822708" hostid="261"></div>The long and short of it is, this electric three-wheeler proved itself to be a fun, capable and versatile ride. I cruised comfortably to the desert, A/C flowing, music playing, in the glorious solitude of my personal battery-powered coach.I pulled up to a drive-thru for lunch with about 26 miles of range to spare.<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1875" width="2500" msid="87822712" hostid="261"></div>Great news for me since the ChargePoint location I planned to visit was just another three miles away.<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1875" width="2500" msid="87822716" hostid="261"></div>Once I arrived, I walked away to enjoy my lunch and visit with family. A little more than two hours later, I returned to find the SOLO EV had regained 90% of its battery charge, more than enough for the 75-mile trip back home.<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1119" width="1492" msid="87822719" hostid="261"></div><h2>Minimalist driving</h2>In a world of automobiles that seem larger and faster than ever, it's nice to slip into something that's anti-all of that. The SOLO EV is large enough (even for my 6-foot-2-inch frame) and quick enough to scoot past gasoline-powered vehicles from a stop, thanks to the instant torque you get from the electric motor.<div type="image" title="ElectraMeccanica SOLO EV" height="1875" width="2500" msid="87822723" hostid="261"></div>And perhaps that idea of "just enough" is indeed suitable for this segment of the micromobility space. All the better if it helps preserve our environment.
