In terms of population, Uttar Pradesh is the largest state in India. The number of eligible voters in the state of Uttar Pradesh as per the electoral rolls is 14,43,16,893 which comprises of 7,81,88,467 males, 6,61,20,052 females and 8,374 third gender voters. Barring a few, most of the women leaders have come from other states and after contesting several elections, they have consolidated their position in Uttar Pradesh. Senior Congress leader <keyword id="19935990" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi" source="keywords">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> leads the brigade of political talent imported from outside Uttar Pradesh. A native of Italy who was living in New Delhi with her in-laws, the Gandhi bahu made her political debut from Amethi in 1999 and then contested and won the Rae Bareli seat from 2004 to 2019. Sonia Gandhi began campaigning in Amethi from 1984 when her husband Rajiv Gandhi made his political debut. When Sonia Gandhi finally took a plunge in politics after the former Prime Minister's demise, she chose the family turf, Amethi. The former Congress President was at one time seen as a prime ministerial candidate, though she never claimed the position. Another woman politician who was seen as a prospective prime ministerial candidate is BSP supremo, <keyword id="19897516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mayawati" source="keywords">Mayawati</keyword>. Mayawati was born in Delhi but her political 'karambhoomi' became Uttar Pradesh when the first SP-BSP government came into existence in 1993 in the state. Circumstances propelled Mayawati into the Uttar Pradesh chief minister's chair in 1995 and over the years, she has emerged as a politician who cannot be ignored. Actor-turned-politician, <keyword id="19968072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hema-Malini" source="keywords">Hema Malini</keyword>, who is seeking her third term from Mathura, belongs to Tamil Nadu and has spent most of her life in Mumbai. She contested and won the 2014 and 2019 elections from Mathura. Hema Malini calls herself 'Krishna ki gopi' and claims to have a divine connect with Mathura. Among others in this list is Smriti Irani, who is seeking her second term from Amethi and originally belongs to Delhi. However, after winning Amethi in 2019, she calls herself 'Amethi ki bitiya'. She has even built her home in Gauriganj in Amethi and is well versed with local politics and the local people. Maneka Gandhi, who originally belongs to Delhi, is the senior-most MP among these women, having won her first election in 1989 on a Janata Dal ticket. She later joined the BJP and has always chosen Uttar Pradesh to contest elections - first Pilibhit and then Sultanpur. Jaya Prada, another actor-turned-politician, was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh but chose Uttar Pradesh to kickstart her political career even though she had earlier joined the TDP. Jaya Prada successfully contested the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and 2009 elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket. Later, she joined the BJP in 2019. Dimple Yadav, senior SP leader and wife of Akhilesh Yadav, originally belongs to Uttarakhand but made Uttar Pradesh her home after her marriage to Akhilesh. Dimple Yadav began her career by losing a bypoll to Raj Babbar of the Congress from Firozabad in 2009 but won the Kannauj seat in a 2012 bye-election. She won the Kannauj seat in 2014 but lost in 2019. However, Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri bye-election after the demise of Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2022. Among all these women leaders, it is only Union Minister Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal (S) who was born and brought up in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Interestingly, even in the past, several women leaders who made a mark in Indian politics were born outside Uttar Pradesh but chose to contest polls from the state. Former Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, made her debut in politics when she won a bye-election from Bijnor in 1985. Meira Kumar, who is the daughter of late veteran politician Jagjivan Ram, was born in Bihar. Former Delhi Chief Minister, late Sheila Dikshit, won her first election from Kannauj in 1984. She was born in Kapurthala in Punjab. Freedom fighter Sucheta Kripalani, the first woman Chief Minister in India, who headed the Uttar Pradesh government, also belonged to Punjab but won the Assembly polls from Mehdawal in Sant Kabir Nagar. --IANS amita/rad

Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) couldn’t have asked for a better time than now to take their massive election campaign in <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> forward and Modi used it to the fullest. He slammed the entire opposition, including state parties, and said growth and development stalled in the state because the BJP was out of power for 14 years. 
 He hit out at the ruling <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword> (SP), which split yesterday, and <keyword id="6356515" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bahujan-Samaj-Party">Bahujan Samaj Party</keyword> (<keyword id="6355170" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSP">BSP</keyword>), which is grappling with black money allegations, and the Congress which has been having trouble regaining its lost glory in Uttar Pradesh. 
 
"There is one party with minimal presence in UP, that is trying for 15 years to establish their leader but with little success. There is another party trying to save money and there is one more party trying to save their own family," the PM said at what the BJP has dubbed the 'Parivartan Rally' or the rally for change. 
 
He also made a point that he made sure that his party wants to work for the people and not hoard black money or save their family. 
 
“Some want to save their black money, some want to save their 'parivaar'. But BJP is the only party that will work to save the people,” he said. 
 
He also said that all the parties, for the first time has come together against him as they are intimidated by what he is doing and it will harm them. 
 
“For the first time in years, SP and BSP share the same opinion on one issue: 'Modi hatao'. But I say 'corruption hatao, kaala dhan hatao'. Now, it's up to the people to decide what they want,” PM modi said. 
 
The first party he referred to was the Congress, which has seen its political fortunes wane compared to its glory days in Uttar Pradesh in the 1970s and the 1980s. 
 The second party he referred to was Mayawati's BSP which has not been able to shake off the taint of corruption allegations. The third party he was referring to was the Samajwadi Party, which split yesterday following months of bickering between father <keyword id="6357168" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mulayam-Singh-Yadav">Mulayam Singh Yadav</keyword> and his chief minister son Akhilesh. 
 
The PM also said that even though the BJP has not been in power in Uttar Pradesh, that doesn't bother him and his party but the fact that there has been minimal development in UP. 
 
“Kuch log kehte hain BJP ka 14 saal ka vanvaas khatam hoga, mudda BJP ke vanvaas ka nahin hai. Mudda 14 saal ke vanvaas ka nahin, 14 saal ke liye Uttar Pradesh mein vikaas ka vanvaas ho gaya hai,” he said. 
 
India, he said, can't prosper and grow unless Uttar Pradesh prospers and grows. 
 
The PM also predicted a win for the BJP in the upcoming elections in Uttar Pradesh. 
 
“Political pundits pontificate on the outcome of the UP elections. But after seeing this crowd gathered here, there's no need for them to expend further efforts. It is clear which way the wind is blowing,” PM said.

BJP has announced that the party’s spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi and former Lok Sabha MP Satish Dubey will contest for these two Rajya Sabha MP posts from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar respectively. Samastipur in Bihar will go for by polls due to the demise of Ramchandra Paswan who won from this seat on behalf of LJP in 2019 elections. Congress has nominated Dr. Ashok Kumar to contest from this seat. Earlier during the last elections, he lost to Ramchandra Paswan. During the upcoming bye polls on October 21, 2019, Sayeeda Banu, Rita Chaudhary, Harendra Mirdha and Mannu Devi will field for Congress party from the assembly constituencies of Kishanganj (Bihar), Mandawa (Rajasthan), Khinwsar (Rajasthan) and Balha (Uttar Pradesh) respectively.

The Lok Sabha elections 2024 are no different. <keyword id="19941423" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Independent-candidate" source="keywords">Independent candidate</keyword> from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, <keyword id="21244546" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pandit-Keshav-Dev" source="keywords">Pandit Keshav Dev</keyword>, decided to make the most of what the <keyword id="19895782" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Election Commission" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Election Commission">Election Commission</keyword> has allotted to him as the poll symbol- a pair of slippers. Aiming to build recall of people, Dev was seen sporting a garland of 7 slippers around his neck during his campaign. Lok Sabha polls will be held in seven phases beginning April 19. Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of MPs, 80, to Parliament, will vote in all seven phases. Voting for phases one and two will be held on April 19 and April 26. Next, the state will once again poll in phases three and four on May 7 and May 13. The Uttar Pradesh electorate will also vote in phases five, six and seven on May 20, May 23 and June 1 respectively. Aligarh will go for polls in the second phase on April 26. The counting of votes will take place on June 4. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Satish Kumar Gautam won from the Aligarh garnering 656215 votes. BJP defeated BSP Dr. Ajeet Baliyan who got 426954 votes. As per the officials, the proposal that is aimed at wooing the OBCs in the coming elections, will now be sent to the Centre for clearance. 
 
There are 17 sub-castes which the government wants included in the SC category are Kahar, Kashyap, Kewat, Nishad, Bind, Bhar, Prajapati, Rajbhar, Batham, Gaur, Tura, Majhi, Mallah, Kumhar, Dheemar and Machua. 
 Before this, in March 2013, the <keyword id="396713" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh-assembly">Uttar Pradesh Assembly</keyword> had passed a resolution asking the Centre to include 17 castes of the state into the list of Scheduled Castes (SC) category. 
 In the resolution presented by Social Welfare Minister <keyword id="1401615" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avdhesh-Prasad">Avdhesh Prasad</keyword> and passed by the voice vote in the House, it was stated that in a detailed study by UP SC/ST Research and Training Institute, these 17 castes have been found "deserving" to be included in the list of Scheduled Castes (SC). 
 The <keyword id="6357168" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mulayam-Singh-Yadav">Mulayam Singh Yadav</keyword> government too had passed the resolution in the state Cabinet in February 2004 and had sent recommendation to the Centre for inclusion of these castes in SC list in December 2004.

Lok Sabha Elections 2019 : polling dates for UP

New Delhi, Delhi Chief Minister <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> said on Thursday that his <keyword id="6354944" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="aam-aadmi-party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> (<keyword id="6356115" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AAP">AAP</keyword>) will contest elections in six states in 2022. "In the next two years, AAP will contest elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, <keyword id="826" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Goa">Goa</keyword>, <keyword id="6354953" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="punjab">Punjab</keyword>, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat," the AAP national convener said while addressing party leaders and workers after a National Council meeting at Kapashera here. He asserted that people supported the AAP because they had realised that both the <keyword id="14666" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> and teh <keyword id="1575" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> had ruled for years but did nothing to change the lives of the common man. "People outside Delhi are fed up with both the BJP and the Congress' policy of divide and rule and have now started looking at the AAP as an alternative. People in other states too want free water and free electricity and they know that only AAP can deliver this. As party workers or leaders, you have to reach out to the people," Kejriwal said. "Earlier, the people used to say that AAP is a Delhi-centric party with no footprint outside the national capital. But, now people have changed their views towards AAP. We have worked hard and proved that the AAP has a vision for the country. In the last six years, our work in Delhi has been noticed by the people," the Chief Minister added. Kejriwal reiterated that Delhi's health services had proved to be a success in handling the coronavirus pandemic.
