London, After the news broke that 23 <keyword id="3000774" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="elderly-patients">elderly patients</keyword> died in <keyword id="6356961" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="norway">Norway</keyword> following their immunization with the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA <keyword id="24209" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccine">vaccine</keyword> against Covid-19, the country has launched a detailed investigation into the reported fatalities that has shocked the world. Doctors in Norway have been asked to conduct more thorough evaluations of very frail elderly patients in line to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, following the reported deaths, the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) reported late Friday. "It may be a coincidence, but we aren't sure," Steinar Madsen, medical director of the Norwegian Medicines Agency (NOMA), told the BMJ. "There is no certain connection between these deaths and the vaccine." Two Covid-19 vaccines, Comirnaty, from BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna, are being used in Norway. The agency has investigated 13 of the deaths so far and concluded that common adverse reactions of mRNA vaccines, such as fever, nausea, and diarrhoea, may have contributed to fatal outcomes in some of the frail patients. "There is a possibility that these common adverse reactions, that are not dangerous in fitter, younger patients and are not unusual with vaccines, may aggravate underlying disease in the elderly," Madsen was quoted as saying. "We are now asking for doctors to continue with the vaccination, but to carry out extra evaluation of very sick people whose underlying condition might be aggravated by it." In a statement, <keyword id="44612" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> said: "Pfizer and <keyword id="3124139" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BioNTech">BioNTech</keyword> are aware of reported deaths following administration of BNT162b2. We are working with NOMA to gather all the relevant information. "All reported deaths will be thoroughly evaluated by NOMA to determine if these incidents are related to the vaccine. The Norwegian government will also consider adjusting their vaccination instructions to take the patients' health into more consideration." More than 20,000 doses of the vaccine have been administered over the past few weeks in Norway and around 400 deaths normally occur among care home residents every week, reports the BMJ. The Paul Ehrlich Institute in Germany is also investigating 10 deaths shortly after Covid-19 vaccination. Chinese publication <keyword id="107898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Times">Global Times</keyword> first broke the story, saying that health experts in the country have called on Norway and other countries to suspend the use of Pfizer's mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccine, after at least 23 deaths were reported post-vaccination. "All the deaths have occurred in frail, elderly patients in nursing homes. All are over 80 years old and some of them over 90," Norwegian media NRK reported. According to the BMJ, the UK's Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said that details of all suspected reactions reported in association with approved Covid-19 vaccines would be published along with its assessment of the data on a regular basis in the future. COVID-19 vaccination: Norway launches probe as 23 elderly patients died after receiving Pfizer vaccine

Mister Bah — or mobile robot balance assistant — is a motorized vehicle equipped with sensors and a harness that patients wear around their hips. <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/964013#_ftnref1">Researchers</a> at Nanyang Technological University and Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore are aiming to reach elderly populations with the device, as falling is one of the <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/falls">leading causes of death worldwide</a> for those over 65.In the US, falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among those 65 and older, according to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/falls/data/fall-deaths.html">data from the CDC.</a> Lead researcher Wei Tech Ang told Insider the device would also help keep patients active."A lot of these patients, when they are fearful of falling down, they don't walk they just sit down all day. Ang said they have now tested MRBA on 50 hospital patients, who he says keep asking when they can use the device again.Ang said he began looking into the idea of a robot assistant after seeing how a loss of balance affected his elderly mother."The intent was for my mother," Ang said. "My mother was a frequent faller, as they may call it. She fell about 10 years ago...that's a point when I started to have this idea of a robot to assist so that people don't fall at home."Now, the team wants to do trials in different settings and seeks to get Mister Bah approved by regulatory bodies across the world to start selling the devices. New Delhi, May 21 (IANSlife) Exasperating for many, intense heat and humidity leads to dehydration and salt-loss (Sodium and Potassium) causing a series of health concerns. People with underlying cardiac issues also face a host of health problem during this season. Beyond the escalated heat levels, some of the other contributing factors that might impact heart health include not having a salt-restricted diet, increased alcohol intake, poor blood circulation, consumption of certain medications like sedatives or diuretics in combination with blood pressure medications, points out Dr Vivek Mahajan Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan &amp; Mulund. For patients with high blood pressure, when temperature and humidity is extreme during the summer, it causes added blood flow to the skin; the heart is then required to beat at a faster rate. This may cause the blood to circulate double the time per minute, Dr Mahajan informs. "Intense heat and constant sweating lowers the fluid content in the body, resulting in dehydration causing a strain on the Heart. This along with BP medications may result in a drastic fall in blood pressure. The low BP and fast Heart rate are big risk factors for those who are predisposed to or have a history of cardiac issues." Patients with the risk of heart-failure should consume up to 1.25 litres of water per day and limit salt intake. Water and salt-loss caused by sweating and intake of medications may lead to dangerously low levels of sodium and potassium, he suggests. Low sodium in blood results in nausea, vomiting, headache, confusion, drowsiness, fatigue, restlessness, irritability, muscle weakness, cramps and seizures, or coma in extreme cases. Low potassium levels due to less water consumption may lead to muscle aches, cramps, palpitations and disturbances in heart rhythm leading to death. So drinking optimum amount of water is crucial in summer. Elderly patients have less water content in the body, so the impact of water and salt-loss are all the more prominent in elderly patients with high BP and heart failure. The risks of heart attacks increase in these individuals during the summers and are hence the most vulnerable group in need of care. So far, GV, which is the venture arm of Google parent company Alphabet, hasn't made any investments in the space. GV manages more than $4.5 billion."We've come away pretty convinced that it's possible to do this," Yeshwant said.There's a big caveat, though: He hasn't determined whether it's something hospitals will independently have to build themselves, rather than having a venture-backed startup come in and build out nationally. "It may make the most sense for a hospital to just do it themselves," he said.Should hospitals and health systems not build up businesses that let them take care of sicker and elderly patients at home, they could lose out on those patients to competitors. Health systems, for their part, are thinking about the transition. "The future is the home, and the home of the future is going to be not just a place called a home. For now, she'd rather wait until companies have hit a series A or beyond stage of fundraising and have more clearly proven out a business model. Even so, she said she's encouraged by the number of companies flooding into the area.<h2>A labor-intensive home care model</h2>It can be particularly difficult for tech-focused investors to fund home-care companies, because the businesses rely on the labor of lots of individuals."It's a bit of a challenging use case for private tech companies just because of how service intensive home care is," Lerner said. "That's why I think we've seen so many home care agencies struggle or change course."For instance, in February 2017 Homehero, a startup with $20 million in funding, shut down its home care business and pivoted to a <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2017/10/11/homehero-pivots-rebrands-to-harvey.html">healthcare venture</a>. Honor, which has raised $115 million, started by competing with established senior-care agencies. But in 2017, Honor started working with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/honor-raises-40-million-in-funding-round-led-by-thrive-capital-2016-8">the agencies</a> instead.When it comes to new companies taking care of patients outside the home, Andreessen Horowitz general partner Jorge Conde, whose firm invested in Honor, said he's spent time focusing on companies that are using technology to make connections within the fractured home care and home health business, and also helping connect those companies and workers back into the broader healthcare system. "Technologies and companies are looking to be the connective tissue to allow the systems to better integrate home health for the care paradigm," Conde told Business Insider.Still, Conde he's seeing a lot of companies tackling bits and piece of the home health and home care market, and it's hard to tell which ones will catch on.Lerner said that for a new entrant to be successful in the home-care market, it'll have to bring a new technology or service that isn't currently offered. That could be something like educational services or companionship, she said."Perhaps that specialization can change the cost structure a bit and mean that you're providing really good medical care from your home aid, while you're supplementing content and companionship through other services."For now, Lerner said, her hope is that smaller companies become really good at one specialty, like content. (AP) - Detectives are investigating an assisted living facility that closed Thursday and left behind 14 sick and elderly patients, a spokesman for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.
Paramedics called to the Valley Manor Residential Care center in Castro Valley found a notice on the door from the state Department of Social Services ordering the site to be closed.
The San Francisco Chronicle and other media outlets report (<a href="http://bit.ly/1dyvplR">http://bit.ly/1dyvplR</a> ) that paramedics also found bedridden patients attended by a handful of staff members who stayed to help them, despite not being paid.
Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson said the staff members who stayed included a cook, janitor and a single caretaker who felt bad for the patients.
Nelson said an investigation could potentially result in elder abuse charges.
The patients were transported to other homes Saturday for temporary care while new places are found for them.
The facility came to the attention of law enforcement Saturday after paramedics responding to an emergency call found a small staff struggling to care for the residents, Nelson said.
Michael Weston, a spokesman for the California Department of Social Services, told KPIX-TV that social service officials had checked on the facility Saturday and were told the patients would be cared for over the weekend.
"I can tell you that the department has been engaged with this facility for quite a while and there is a history of concerns," Weston said. "Apparently, what happened is that the facility staff felt that they were starting to lose the capability to care for these individuals, so they called for help."

New Delhi, June 4 (IANSlife) Over two months with a stay-at-home mandate, elderly people living with vision disabilities are among the ones struggling the most. Coupled with this is the looming fear of losing their vision if their treatment is delayed. Most of them are either unable to visit the doctor due to the lockdown or because they are worried of catching the COVID-19 infection, if they step out. One such debilitating retinal disease which is a major cause of preventable blindness amongst the elderly, is Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). India is estimated to have 288 million AMD patients by 2040. It is a disease where abnormal blood vessels grow in the macula (centre part of the retina) causing damage to the central vision, explains Dr Raja Narayanan, Hon. Secretary of Vitreo Retina Society of India (VRSI). Older adults living with compromised vision are more likely to be depressed than patients who do not report such problems. Depression has been found in almost one-third of AMD patients which is approximately twice as high as the lifetime prevalence rates in normally sighted older populations. AMD patients are also at a very high risk of accidental falls and other injuries. Here are few quick tips which caregivers and patients can follow to manage the condition, while the country gradually reopens: Be connected with your doctor Recently, the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) had issued guidelines for injections for patients with AMD and it should not be deferred. Patients on anti-VEGF injections might need to go to the doctor for taking the injection, hence patients and caregivers are requested to check with their doctor to schedule the appointment and be in constant touch with them through tele-consultation. Be compassionate with the elderly Your older loved ones are going through a lot of physical and mental stress, during these trying times. Stay in touch with them through phone calls if you live separately. If you live with them, engage them in different activities and participate along with them. Listen to music and audio books, meditate and play board games. Younger members of the house can take charge of all household chores. Keep a close eye on symptoms with the use of Amsler grid Using the Amsler grid, AMD patients can check their eyesight every day. The grid helps you check any vision changes which are not obvious. Contact your retinologist immediately, if you notice any symptoms such as wavy, broken or blurry lines in the grid. Remove all hazardous objects from your house It is advised to seek help from the younger family members or neighbours and remove all the unsafe objects from your walking and working area of the house. This will help decrease the risk of accidental falls due to low vision Maintain a healthy diet and follow proper medication Family members should make sure AMD patients follow the same routine as they used to before the lockdown. Make sure that they eat a healthy diet, don't make any drastic lifestyle modifications and continue following their medication and treatment regimen Improve lighting in your home Patients can improve lighting in the daytime by keeping the windows open and using more lights and lamps at night. It is advised keep a few lights on while sleeping to reduce the chances of bumping into something in the middle of night if the patient happens to wake up Seek help from neighbours If you are living alone or with your elderly spouse, don't hesitate to seek support from neighbours to stock groceries and medicines. Scott Wiener said the law is disconnected from the realities of being trans, and mistakenly equates misgendering to offending someone. <ul class="summary-list"><li>A man in <keyword id="11996535" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="connecticut" source="Orion">Connecticut</keyword> was charged with 2nd-degree threatening for tweets toward the state's governor.</li><li>Jonathan Wright told <keyword id="11894211" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="police" source="Orion">police</keyword> he believed the governor was putting <keyword id="11893994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19" source="Orion">COVID-19</keyword> patients in nursing homes, according to an arrest warrant. </li></ul>A man in Connecticut was charged after threatening to kill Gov. Ned Lamont over a <keyword id="11976191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="conspiracy" source="Orion">conspiracy</keyword> theory that nursing homes were taking in COVID-19 patients to make people sick.Jonathan Wright, a 41-year-old man from New London County, was arrested and charged on Nov. 15 by the Connecticut State Police, <a href="https://dailyvoice.com/connecticut/stratford/news/ct-man-arrested-for-making-threats-to-lamont-state-police-say/820126/">according to the Stratford Daily Voice</a>. Wright was charged with second degree threatening and posted a $30,000 bond, according to the report.Wright was accused of sending several threatening tweets to the governor from October 20 to October 23, according to an arrest warrant reviewed by Insider. Wright's threats were related to a conspiracy theory that people who tested positive for COVID-19 were being placed into nursing homes in Connecticut, the warrant says."President Trump knows what you did to the elderly Covid patients that were sent to nursing homes," Wright wrote in a tweet dated October 23, the affidavit alleges. "All is known and you will meet your maker courtest of a noose and a trap door. Treason=DEATH."Insider's attempts to reach Wright and to determine if an attorney is representing him were unsuccessful on Tuesday.According to the arrest warrant, Wright told investigators he "didn't mean anything threatening when he wrote the "tweet," when police interviewed him at his home on October 28. The warrant alleges that Wright posted threatening tweets toward Lamont because "he had heard that government leaders had been putting COVID patients into nursing homes getting elderly people sick.""Wright was angry about that and he said that leaders should be held accountable just like we are if that is true," the warrant says.The document also says that Wright indicated on a written statement to police that he believed form New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned over "his handling of COVID patients." Cuomo, who was facing impeachment, resigned in August after a state attorney general's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gov-andrew-cuomo-resigns-sexual-harassment-scandal-2021-3">investigation found that he sexually harassed 11 women</a>. Wright wrote in his statement that he believed since former Gov. Cuomo was guilty of sending COVID-19 patients to nursing homes, he thought Gov. Lamont, "could be guilty of it too," the warrant says. According to the document, Wright wrote that he thought nursing homes "make money off the elderly dying of COVID" and "people were labeled as COVID deaths but actually are not" in nursing homes.Wright is next expected to appear in Connecticut Superior Court on November 29, according to the Daily Voice.

A seemingly small design intervention can make a huge difference in behaviour change. 
 
Experiment 
British psychologists Paschal Sheeran and Sheina Orbell conducted an experiment in two of Scotland’s busiest orthopaedic hospitals. The participants were elderly patients from low and middle class households, who had undergone hip or knee replacement surgeries. 
 
Recovering from a hip or knee surgery is incredibly arduous. While recovering the smallest movements can be excruciating. But it is essential that patients begin exercising almost as soon as they wake from surgery, even before the muscles and skin have healed, or the tissues will clog the joint, destroying its flexibility. But exercising is so painful that many patients skip out on rehab sessions, especially the elderly ones. 
 
Behavioural Design 
So the patients were each given a booklet after their surgeries that detailed their rehab schedule, and in the back were thirteen additional pages – one for each week – with instructions: My goals for this week are _________________? Write down exactly what you are going to do. For example, if you are going to walk this week, write down where and when you are going to walk. 
 
Results 
Three months passed. The patients who had written exact plans in their booklets had started walking twice as fast as the ones who had not, as well as, getting in and out of their chairs, putting on their shoes, doing laundry, all of it much faster, than the ones who had not written anything in the booklet. 
 
Why did it work? 
The psychologists examined the booklets of those who had filled it and found it filled with specific detailed plans about the most mundane aspects of recovery. Like one patient wrote that he would walk to the bus stop on a particular day to meet his wife coming back from work at 3:30pm and the time he would leave, the route he would walk, what he would wear and which pills he would take if the pain became too much. Someone else who would exercise each time she would go to the bathroom, wrote that she would automatically take the first step right away after standing up from the couch, so that she wouldn’t be tempted to sit down again. 
 
Implementation plan 
All focused on how they would handle a specific moment of anticipated pain. They built plans around inflection points when they knew their pain – and their temptation to quit – would be strongest. 
 
Patients who didn’t write out any plans were at a significant disadvantage, because they never thought ahead about how to deal with pain. They didn’t deliberately design their habits. So their resolve abandoned them when they confronted the first few steps. 
 
So if you want something to happen, write all the steps down.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11896021" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hong-kong" source="Orion">Hong Kong</keyword> is wrestling with the deadliest <keyword id="11893994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19" source="Orion">COVID-19</keyword> wave in the world right now, per capita.</li><li>Most elderly adults in Hong Kong are unvaccinated due to a combination of confusion and mistrust.</li></ul>After two years of holding back the <keyword id="11893194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus" source="Orion">coronavirus</keyword> near-perfectly, Hong Kong is suffering a brutally punishing wave of new <keyword id="12616996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> infections — the deadliest in the world right now, per capita."We have about 30,000 [new] cases a day," Dr. Edwin Tsui, Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection controller, said on Wednesday during a <a href="https://www.news.gov.hk/eng/2022/03/20220316/20220316_175147_256.html">news conference</a>. Though Omicron infections are also rising in other spots around the globe that have held the virus at bay until now (like New Zealand) Hong Kong is in the uniquely painful position of having very few of its elderly adults fully vaccinated. That is a big part of the reason why the per capita death rate in Hong Kong is so high right now.Since late December, when <a href="https://www.news.gov.hk/eng/2021/12/20211231/20211231_171638_961.html">local transmission of Omicron</a> began in Hong Kong, <a href="https://www.news.gov.hk/eng/2022/03/20220316/20220316_175147_256.html">4,634 people have died</a>. Previously, only <a href="https://weekly.chinacdc.cn/news/TrackingtheEpidemic.htm">213 people in Hong Kong</a> had died from COVID-19 in all of 2020 and 2021 combined.This wave, which began in February, 89% of deaths have been among people who did not receive two doses of a vaccine, and most of the deaths have been in unvaccinated victims 60 and up.<h2>Older people in Hong Kong have some of the lowest vaccination rates in the world</h2>Just 36% of Hong Kong residents over the age of 80 have had two doses of a vaccine from either Pfizer or Sinovac. The <a href="https://www.covidvaccine.gov.hk/en/dashboard/">vaccination rate</a> among younger people in Hong Kong is far higher, with more than 88% of people aged 20-59 years old receiving two doses so far. Reasons for the low vaccination rate among the elderly include fear, confusion over whether the vaccines are safe for people with preexisting conditions, and mistrust of the government's handling of the pandemic."The government has never truly taken consideration of the elderly in every single measure and policy it has carried out since the start of the pandemic," unvaccinated 72-year-old Sit Pui-yu <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3166840/coronavirus-hong-kong-alone-afraid-and">told the South China Morning Post</a>. Terry Lum, a professor of social work at the University of Hong Kong, told the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/25/business/hong-kong-unvaccinated-elderly.html">New York Times</a> the government has not moved swiftly to shut down misinformation. "When that misinformation is circulating and no one comes out to clarify the information, and we have such low cases, the people wonder, 'Why would I take the risk?'" Lum said.Hong Kong's lagging elderly vaccination rates are outliers compared to the rest of the world, where the older you are, the more likely it is you've been fully vaccinated.In the US, <a href="https://data.cdc.gov/Vaccinations/COVID-19-Vaccination-and-Case-Trends-by-Age-Group-/gxj9-t96f/data">more than 85% of people over the age of 75</a> are fully vaccinated, while in the <a href="https://reports.opensafely.org/reports/vaccine-coverage/">UK 96% of seniors over the age of 80</a> have had two shots. Those higher than average vaccination rates among elders reflect the recognition that elderly adults are some of the most vulnerable to COVID-19's nastiest consequences, including death.<h2>The virus is spreading through nursing homes</h2>With the Omicron variant able to spread more quickly and more easily than previous versions of the virus did, unvaccinated elders in Hong Kong are at greater risk now than ever before. "Some care homes have seen all residents infected, according to my understanding," Elderly Commission chairman Dr. Lam Ching-choi told the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3169331/hong-kong-now-has-worlds-highest-covid-19-death">South China Morning Post</a> earlier this month. "Very unfortunately, the death rate among the elderly will continue to rise as we currently do not have enough resources – from hospital beds and isolation facilities to medication."Hong Kong has hurried in recent weeks to rush the construction of several <a href="https://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/202203/04/P2022030400277.htm">makeshift hospitals</a> and patient isolation facilities, with bed locations including a <a href="https://hongkongfp.com/2022/03/05/covid-19-new-facility-at-kai-tak-cruise-terminal-to-house-elderly-with-mild-symptoms/">cruise ship terminal</a>, a <a href="https://twitter.com/newsgovhk/status/1503964012832198659">gym</a>, and an <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Lok+Ma+Chau+Loop,+Hong+Kong/@22.5210197,114.0621504,14z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x3403f69c3406e115:0x9e4abcbf0352c480!8m2!3d22.521021!4d114.07966">unincorporated patch of land</a> that sits next to mainland China. Hundred of healthcare workers are also being brought over from the mainland to help with the surge. Professor Lau Yu-lung, a government adviser on vaccines, said even elderly patients with symptoms should go ahead and get vaccinated as soon as possible. Walter Cheung Shu-wai <a href="https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3166840/coronavirus-hong-kong-alone-afraid-and">told the Post</a> that his 94-year-old mother received her first dose of Pfizer's vaccine last week, and she had no noticeable side effects. "Our family had been thinking about it for more than half a year. We see that the epidemic is getting more and more serious since the fifth wave of infections, and it would be risky if my mother gets infected," he said. "I guess we all need to calculate the risk."
