Its warehouses, fulfilment centres and delivery hubs that are spread across the country ensure a seamless operation for its business. At its biggest fulfilment centre in India, located 50 kilometres from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/flipkarts-asias-largest-fulfilment-centre-to-process-a-million-shipments-a-day-during-bbd/articleshow/93851477.cms">Kolkata at Haringhata</a>, the facility uses new technologies such as automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic packaging arms, cross belt sorters, a nine-kilometre-long network conveyor belt and automated guided vehicles. Nearly 70% of these automation technologies deployed at Haringhata were built in India and it reduces Flipkart’s turnaround time by 35-50% in shipment movement. “With the help of route optimisations and dynamic planning, Flipkart ensures reliable deliveries to customers while optimising for cost and resources in all eventualities, including supply-chain disruptions,” Hemant Badri, senior vice president and head of supply chain, Flipkart Group told Business Insider India. Using robots to speed up delivery Before your order reaches your doorstep, it goes through several stages at Flipkart’s fulfilment centres. If you order a teddy bear from Flipkart – from unloading a package from various sellers into the centre to sending it to you – it goes through a long supply chain. In-bound: Products from various sellers are unloaded into the fulfilment centre and they go through a quality check by employees. Sorting and retrieval: Products are sorted by an intelligent conveyor belt, shelved as per their categories, and retrieved when an order is placed. For example, your teddy bear could be shelved in a soft toy section, retrieved when you place an order. Packaging: The teddy will then be packed into a box as per its size. It is not just humans that choose the right size, robotic packaging makers produce boxes too and drop the packages containing the product into a white courier bag. The robot is managed by an engineer. Shipments: The teddy then sits on a 9-km-long cross-belt sorter, which assigns shipments as per different pin codes. Out-bound: Here, your teddy will go through one last quality check and shipped as per your pincode. After the package reaches a delivery hub, a machine called Allocation Engine takes over. Explaining the machine’s role, Badri said, “[It] distributes goods among the many delivery models that offer the fastest time allocated to the location of the consumer.” With an increasing demand for quick deliveries, Flipkart relies on Automated Beat Planner, which predicts the average reaching time. It also predicts any roadblocks that might cause delays. “It forecasts the attempt time, padded with data-backed buffers and round-offs, to account for on-field deviation in plan execution and prediction of inaccuracies in quick deliveries using technologies like Automated Beat Planner (to suggest the delivery agent's route) and FLIP (to gauge customer's address accuracy),” shared Badri. In India, Flipkart has over 80 facility centres – 18 of which are large facilities that store appliances and 21 fulfilment centres are for groceries. Three new big boxes, or fulfilment centres, will be launched in the next three years. Using solar energy to power robots Flipkart’s newly added machines, which have increased efficiency, also require a huge amount of electricity to function. Walmart-backed Flipkart has installed solar panels which can power heavy machinery. “We are running at least eight hours on solar and 25-30% of power consumption savings we have done so far,” said Prabhakr Kolla, VP, F&amp;I at ekart, Flipkart. The facility has a three-megawatt solar power plant and the platform aims to touch 40 megawatts all across facilities in a few years. The process of commissioning a 2.75 megawatt rooftop solar power plant at Haringhata has also begun. <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> is now looking forward to consolidating business of its in-house supply chain arm, <keyword id="2675352" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ekart-Logistics">Ekart Logistics</keyword>. The e-commerce company has already suspended the customer-to-customer courier service within months of its launch and has also pulled the plug on hyperlocal delivery services being piloted across Bengaluru since March last year. 
 "Beginning February 5, <keyword id="2057197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="eKart">Ekart</keyword> no longer operates its customer-to-customer courier service started in May 2016, that gave people the option of having documents and parcels packed by Ekart's delivery boys and shipped to end-addresses. The move is aimed at consolidating the service offerings of Ekart, to sharpen its focus on its core business model," the company told ET. 
 
Nearly 30,000-40,000 orders a day are processed by Ekart for third-party businesses excluding the volumes generated by Flipkart and Flipkart-owned fashion portal Myntra. 
 
It will continue its core ecommerce offerings, including third-party logistics services to ecommerce players such as Paytm and ShopClues. It will also continue to provide warehousing and fulfilment facilities to larger retail clients such as Madura Garments.

Flipkart plans to consolidate Ekart, suspends month-old services

Three top level executives resigned from top management level in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a>, day after the e-commerce giant named new CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, who is building his team of top executives primarily consisting of company veterans. 
 
The executives leaving the company are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Saikiran+Krishnamurthy&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Saikiran Krishnamurthy</a>, who headed the e-tailer supply chain unit Ekart; senior vice president <keyword id="373799" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Surojit-Chatterjee">Surojit Chatterjee</keyword>, who headed product and chief marketing officer <keyword id="2327848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samardeep-Subandh">Samardeep Subandh</keyword>. 
 Reportedly, the three of them had joined <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> in 2015 when Flipkart was aggressively hiring top talent from outside after raising over $2.6 billion in funding between 2014 and 2015. 
 
The reason for the departure of three executives could not be immediately ascertained. 
 The exit of these executives comes after Flipkart announced that Kalyan Krishnamurthy will be the CEO of the main horizontal commerce unit and also oversee <keyword id="2057197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="eKart">Ekart</keyword>. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Binny+Bansal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Binny Bansal</a> was elevated to Group CEO and will oversee other businesses, including payments (PhonePe) and fashion (Myntra, Jabong), in addition to finding new growth drivers for the group. 
 
As a part of this reorganisation Nitin Seth, current chief administrative officer at Flipkart, was made the COO for Flipkart with additional responsibility for Ekart and customer experience besides HR, strategy and corporate functions. 
 Seth was directly reporting to Kalyan Krishnamurthy under the new structure. <keyword id="2748488" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saikiran-Krishnamurthy">Saikiran Krishnamurthy</keyword>, a strategy expert from <keyword id="6372399" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="McKinsey">McKinsey</keyword>, was initially roped in as COO of Flipkart's commerce unit and later went onto lead Ekart. 
 Other two executives - chief product officer <keyword id="278552" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Punit-Soni">Punit Soni</keyword> and chief technology officer <keyword id="4052975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="peeyush-ranjan-">Peeyush Ranjan -</keyword> left the company last year.

Top 3 executives leave Flipkart, restructuring continues

Seth was in charge of Flipkart’s logistics unit <keyword id="2057197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="eKart">Ekart</keyword> and also headed corporate functions like strategy and human resources (HR) till recently, before CEO <keyword id="6379357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kalyan-Krishnamurthy">Kalyan Krishnamurthy</keyword> took over the HR function last week. Seth's exit will increase the power and control of former <keyword id="260318" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tiger-Global-Management">Tiger Global Management</keyword> executive Krishnamurthy. Flipkart's COO steps out; CEO Krishnamurthy to have even more control

The valuation of the e-commerce giant <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart</a> has been pegged at $5.56 billion as a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Fidelity&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Fidelity</a>-managed mutual fund has further slashed value of its <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> shares by 36.1%. 
 Reportedly, the fund has disclosed that as of November 2016, <keyword id="6405604" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="fidelity">Fidelity</keyword> has marked the value of their Flipkart shares at $52.13 per share, down from $81.55 per share as of August 2016. This marked as the largest markdown by Fidelity till date and fourth markdown overall. 
 
Also, another bigger mutual fund investors <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Morgan+Stanley&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Morgan Stanley</a> had also marked the value of their Flipkart shares at $52.13 per share in the September 2016 quarter. Flipkart has also faced a series of market downs from other mutual fund investors like T Rowe Price, and Valic over the past year. 
 
Earlier, Flipkart co-founders have told ET that "markdowns are a theoretical exercise and valuation will be determined when it raises a new round of funding." 
 This move follows a top level management change at Flipkart that led to <keyword id="6379357" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kalyan-Krishnamurthy">Kalyan Krishnamurthy</keyword>, a former executive at Flipkart's largest investor Tiger Global, taking over from <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> as the new CEO. Co-founder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Binny+Bansal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Binny Bansal</a> moved to a new position as group CEO, and the other co-founder <keyword id="225032" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Bansal">Sachin Bansal</keyword> continues as executive chairman.

Fidelity slashes Flipkart’s valuation to $5.56 billion

In India’s thriving <keyword id="2489789" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ecommerce-market">eCommerce market</keyword>, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> is one player which is not leaving any stone unturned to make Indian consumers happy. Now the leading eCommerce player is planning to set up a logistics company in <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/India" target="_blank">India</a> to deliver products directly to consumers. 
 
As per an Economic Time Report, <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Amazon-Transportation-Services-Private-Limited" target="_blank">Amazon Transportation Services Private Limited</a>, a subsidiary of US-based Amazon, will ship goods from sellers who transact on the company's online marketplace in India. Its rivals <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> already have such services on offer. While Flipkart had struck a deal with <keyword id="2057197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="eKart">eKart</keyword>, Snapdeal recently bought a stake in delivery firm Gojavas. 
 
Samuel Augustine Thomas, director of transportation for Amazon in India, told the financial daily that the logistics arm has been set up to aid in last-mile delivery as products can be shipped faster. 
 
At present, Amazon ships products to some 19,000 pin codes across the country. It will continue to do so, or maybe add more areas in it delivery list, with ATSL that will be one of the logistics partners for Amazon's Indian marketplace. 
 
Amazon surely seems to have made a right move as the "lastmile delivery" is a crucial front in the war for leadership in India's ecommerce industry, which is pegged at $43 billion (Rs 2.5 lakh crore) by 2018. 
 
Ankur Bisen, senior VP at retail consulting firm <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Technopak" target="_blank">Technopak</a>, also feels the same. He told ET, "All large marketplaces have opened their own last-mile logistics arms in India as the capability to deliver goods next day doesn't exist in India's logistics sector…It makes sense to hive off (logistics divisions) or operate as separate arms as they may achieve a scale and reach their full potential by servicing other ecommerce companies.".

Walmart-owned Flipkart will undertake a buyback employee <keyword id="6368159" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="stock">stock</keyword> options worth about Rs 600 crore, according to sources. Earlier in the day, Flipkart announced raising $3.6 billion (about Rs 26,805.6 crore) in funding from a clutch of investors that valued the e-commerce major at $37.6 billion (about Rs 2.79 lakh crore). In an e-mail to employees, Flipkart group chief executive officer <keyword id="6379357" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kalyan-krishnamurthy">Kalyan Krishnamurthy</keyword> lauded the critical role played by the staff in reaching this milestone. "It has always been our endeavour to provide our employees with an opportunity to liquidate their vested options regularly. This year, we are pleased to announce a buyback of 5 per cent of the past three years' vested options. With this landmark event for us, I am happy to share that we are offering our employees an additional buyback of 5 per cent of all vested options as we stay committed to wealth creation for you," he said. While the e-mail did not provide additional details, sources said the employee stock options buyback would entail a spending of about Rs 600 crore, and employees will be able to liquidate up to 10 per cent of their vested shares depending on the individual's holding pattern. They added that about 6,000 people are expected to benefit from the buyback. The company confirmed the development but did not disclose any details. Employees are granted options based on their tenure, performance, and contributions to the company. In his e-mail, Krishnamurthy said the fund infusion received by Flipkart is "one of the most significant investments in the digital commerce ecosystem in India, reflecting the opportunity for digital commerce in India and the confidence of investors in our ability to address this potential". "As we continue to focus on meeting the needs of our customers, we will make several investments across people, technology, supply chain, and infrastructure, and continue to strengthen and build on key categories and business opportunities," he added. Krishnamurthy emphasised that the company must sustain its commitment to its existing customers and introduce the value proposition of digital commerce to the next 200 million Indians, ensuring that it innovates to create value and experiences for them. "Through our partnerships with ecosystem players, not only do we need to accelerate growth for them, but we must also direct our efforts to enable inclusive growth for lakhs small and medium businesses who have an opportunity to benefit from the potential of digital commerce in India," he added. Flipkart Group has raised $3.6 billion in funding led by Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments), <keyword id="9240440" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="softbank-vision-fund-2">SoftBank Vision Fund 2</keyword> and Walmart, valuing the e-commerce giant at $37.6 billion. The current funding round has also seen participation from sovereign funds DisruptAD, <keyword id="6437412" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Qatar-Investment-Authority">Qatar Investment Authority</keyword>, Khazanah Nasional Berhad as well as marquee investors Tencent, <keyword id="11620199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="willoughby-capital">Willoughby Capital</keyword>, Antara Capital, Franklin Templeton, and Tiger Global. With this deal, <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> is re-entering Flipkart's cap table. SoftBank had sold its approximately 20 per cent share when Walmart bought a 77 per cent stake in Flipkart for $16 billion in 2018. E-commerce platform Flipkart to buyback employee stock options worth ₹600 crore, say sources

E-commerce major <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> has pledged to give delivery workers leave with full pay and benefits if they contract COVID-19 or are placed under quarantine. Flipkart said it has made temperature screening using infra-red thermometers mandatory for all employees, vendors and visitors. Persons with suspected flu symptoms are advised to return home. "For our supply chain and logistics network, we have organised more than 3,000 awareness sessions covering over 100k employees across all our facilities on how our employees and partners can minimize their exposure by following simple precautionary measures," Amitesh Jha, Senior Vice President - eKart &amp; Marketplace at Flipkart, said in a blog post on Wednesday. The delivery executives of the e-commerce major are covered with both life and medical insurance, Jha informed. With the rapid spread of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> across the world, the demand for digital services has increased significantly. Online retail giant Amazon this week announced that it plans to hire 1 lakh employees in the US in its fulfilment centres and delivery network as more and more people are relying on online deliveries for their daily needs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Flipkart also said that it has seen "overwhelming demand for essential products". "We appreciate the dedication and customer-first approach of our supply chain executives, wishmasters and delivery partners during this challenging time. They have reiterated their commitment to serving customers and overcoming many challenges to meet the overwhelming demand for essential products," Jha said. "The onus is on e-commerce to rise to the demands of the occasion, and we are sparing no effort to ensure that we meet our customers' needs," he said, adding that Flipkart is taking all preventive measures as advised by the World Health Organization. Seeking cooperation from customers in fighting the spread of coronavirus in India, Flipkart requested them to use digital payment gateways for all cash-on-delivery shipments. Flipkart said it is working on making additional delivery options such as contactless delivery available to customers in select locations. "Customers also have the option of requesting the delivery partner to leave their packages at the security booth of their residential complexes in line with their complex's guidelines (in case of online payments)," Jha said.

Flipkart delivery workers to get leave with full pay if quarantined

Bengaluru, July 14 (IANS) A Walmart-led investor group on Tuesday pumped in an additional $1.2 billion into the ecommerce platform Flipkart Group to support its marketplace in the wake of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. With the new investment, Flipkart group is now valued at $24.9 billion. The $1.2 billion will be funded in two tranches over the remainder of the fiscal year. "We're grateful for the strong backing of our shareholders as we continue to build our platform and serve the growing needs of Indian consumers during these challenging times," Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy said in a statement. Founded in 2007, the Flipkart Group includes Flipkart, digital payments platform PhonePe, fashion specialty site Myntra and eKart. In 2018, Walmart invested $16 billion for a majority stake in the group. "Since Walmart's initial investment in Flipkart, we have greatly expanded our offer through technology, partnerships and new services. We will continue innovating to bring the next 200 million Indian shoppers online," Krishnamurthy said in a statement. With a registered customer base of over 200 million, Flipkart recently surpassed 1.5 billion visits per month and reported 45 per cent growth in monthly active customers and 30 per cent growth in transactions per customer for FY20. Flipkart offers 150 million products across more than 80 categories, and has pioneered customer-centric services such as cash-on-delivery, no-cost EMI and easy returns. PhonePe recently reported annualised total payments value (TPV) of $180 billion on more than 500 million monthly transactions. "Flipkart continues to leverage its culture of innovation to accelerate growth and enable millions of customers, sellers, merchants and small businesses to prosper and be a part of India's digital transformation," said Judith McKenna, President and CEO of Walmart International. Flipkart said it has significantly expanded its kirana onboarding programme to make deliveries to customers in more than 850 cities. The number of kiranas joining the programme has doubled since last year. "Through a combination of their hyperlocal presence and innovations by Flipkart, this programme has become a great enabler in strengthening the kirana ecosystem in the country," said Amitesh Jha, Senior Vice-President, Ekart and Marketplace, Flipkart. The company aims to provide a personalised e-commerce experience to millions of consumers while creating opportunities for digital upskilling as well as additional income for kiranas. The kirana programme has been expanded to places like Tinsukia (Assam), Agartala (Tripura) and Kannur (Kerala), connecting kiranas and consumers to the country's fast growing digital commerce. Amazon has already announced that it has created more than 100,000 seasonal job opportunities ahead of the festive season. “This year, more than 100,000 seasonal associates will join us to fulfill customer promises. We remain committed to creating job opportunities across the country, especially at a time when the pandemic has posed challenges in earning livelihood for many”, said Akhil Saxena, Vice President - APAC, MENA, and LATAM Customer Fulfilment Operations, Amazon India, in a statement. The direct jobs will be across supply chain -- delivery executives, pickers, packers and sorters -- while there will be additional indirect jobs at Flipkart's seller partner locations and kiranas, the company said in a statement. "We are focused on creating impactful partnerships that offer great consumer experience while creating additional opportunities for progress of the entire ecosystem as it scales for the Big Billion Days (BBD)," said Amitesh Jha, Senior Vice-President, Ekart and Marketplace, Flipkart. Filpkart said that onboarding of more than 50,000 kiranas for the last-mile delivery will also create thousands of seasonal jobs to deliver millions of packages. "By generating employment and enabling our sellers to scale their businesses during this time, we're doing our part to drive growth in the industry and the economy," Jha said. Flipkart is undertaking training programmes for its direct hires in various aspects of the supply chain through a mix of classroom and digital training, enhancing their understanding of supply chain management. "The capability to allow GSTIN on their invoices will help millions of business entities - to claim input tax credit on their business related purchases, saving up to 28 per cent on their purchases," the ecommerce leader said.

The ranking has been concluded on the basis of a collaborated ‘Fairwork Research Project’ by the International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore, the University of Cape Town, the University of Manchester, and the University of the Western Cape analysing the markets in India and South Africa.
