The diverging stock prices of two motorcycle majors – Bajaj Auto and Eicher Motors – are telling an interesting story. Over the last one month Bajaj Auto’s stock has rallied 10% while that of Eicher has risen by 3.3%, which is a modest increase in comparison. And the Nifty Auto Index has rallied by 5.2% in the same time. So what’s happening to makers of two-wheelers in India? Competition is on the rise in the mid-premium segment, where Eicher has been a leader so far with its iconic Royal Enfield offerings. Bajaj Auto has launched the Triumph Speed 400 which provides 39.5 bhp of power with a 398-cc engine. Bajaj Auto stock has gotten a power boost due to the positive reviews the Triumph Speed 400 has received. Compared to the Harley or RE’s <keyword id="6426894" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="himalayan" source="Orion">Himalayan</keyword> and 350-cc offerings, the bike offers higher power. Another two-wheeler major – Hero MotoCorp in collaboration with Harley Davidson – has launched the new X440 which provides 27 bhp power with a 440-cc engine. Both the bikes have received approximately 20-26K bookings since launch in early-July. Moreover, the Yezdi Adventure and the <keyword id="220906" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawa" source="Orion">Jawa</keyword> 42 Bobber have also added to the competition. Competition in the mid-premium range of bikes in India is growing by the day and this is impacting stock prices too. Jeffries, research house, points out that the Eicher, although up 5% in 2023, has underperformed the Nifty Auto Index by 24% in this period. The report adds that it is time to “buy” it as it sees limited impact from competition launching new bikes in the past month and a half. Like economists, analysts rarely agree on likely winners. While Jefferies has retained its faith in Eicher, BofA Securities has upgraded Bajaj Auto to a ‘Buy’ saying that FY25 looks promising for the company with new Triumph launches on the same platform lined up. “The product (Speed 400cc) clearly seems to be making a mark in large metro cities-design, specs &amp; price stand out.. Scrambler 400cc launch in a few weeks and export markets expansion will be added catalysts and drive volumes. Channel checks also suggest that RE has not seen any significant impact so far, even in cities where Harley and Triumph bikes are available. “We factor RE total volumes (domestic + exports) of 76K/85K/95K in FY24E/FY25E/FY26E,” argues the Jeffries report. It adds, “We retain Buy on EIM with revised PT of Rs 4,150 (earlier Rs4,000), valuing RE at 25x FY25E PE (earlier 24x).” A wider portfolio to bank on Royal Enfield has a much wider portfolio than its competition in the premium biking segment. This offers buyers options at multiple price points to enter the segment – all the way from 350-cc to 650-cc. A new 650-cc bike, most likely to be called Shotgun 650, has also been spotted being road tested. Furthermore, the company has multiple products in the pipeline.” It too maintains a ‘Buy’ rating with a target price of Rs 3,800/share (From Rs 3,900/share). The next few launches in the mid-premium to premium segment will be eagerly awaited by the market and biking enthusiasts alike. The rising competition should offer more choice to the Indian consumer while the market will like to see which bike maker vrooms ahead.

<ul><li>Tata Motors reported a 4% fall in total domestic sales in April as compared to the same period last year.</li><li>Hero MotoCorp announced a dip of 5% in its total wholesales as it sold 3.96 lakh units in April against 4.18 lakh units last year.</li><li>Maruti Suzuki reported a growth of 6.5% in passenger vehicles, while TVS Motor announced a 4% rise in sales to 3.06 lakh units in April.</li></ul>Shares of automobile companies remained in focus on Tuesday after the April sales data of Tata Motors and Hero MotoCorp disappointed the street. At the same time, Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor and Eicher Motor reported healthy growth in sales. Tata Motors reported a 4% fall in total domestic sales to 68,514 units in April as compared to 71,467 units during the same period last year. Total commercial vehicle sales of the automaker also dipped 27% to 22,492 units in April from 30,838 units last year. Also, its total wholesales declined 4% to 69,599 units as compared to 72,468 units last year. Following the weak sales, shares of Tata Motors fell more than 2% on Tuesday. Two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp also reported a dip of 5% in its total wholesales — as it sold 3.96 lakh units in April against 4.18 lakh units last year. Shares of Hero MotoCorp were down more than 2%. Domestic sales for the two wheeler maker declined marginally to 3.86 lakh units in April 2023 from 3.98 lakh units in April 2022. But its exports slumped over 50% to 9,923 units from 20,132 units last year. The company said it expects the momentum to build up in the coming months on account of a combination of multiple factors, including a slew of new product launches, a healthy growth in the country's GDP and positive consumer sentiment. Maruti Suzuki, TVS Motor, Eicher Motors shine India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki announced a good sales growth of 6.5% in passenger vehicles to 1.6 lakh units in April as compared to 1.5 lakh during the same period last year. It registered a 7% increase in total dispatches to dealers at 1.6 lakh in April. Its total sales including domestic and exports rose to 1.6 lakh units from 1.5 lakh units last year. As a result, shares of Maruti Suzuki gained 2.15% to ₹8,771. The automaker’s total domestic sales including PV, LCV and OEM stood at 1.43 lakh units as compared to 1.32 lakh units last year. Maruti Suzuki highlighted that it has been facing a shortage of electronic components while it has taken all possible measures to minimise the impact. Meanwhile, TVS Motor Company announced a 4% rise in sales at 3.06 lakh units in April 2023 from 2.95 lakh units in the same month, last year. TVS’ two-wheeler segment delivered a sales growth of 5% to 2.94 lakh units from 2.8 lakh units during the same period last year. Motorcycle volumes rose 10% to 1.52 lakh units from 1.39 lakh units. Scooter sales grew 5% to 1.07 lakh units from 1.02 lakh units last year. Reacting to the April sales numbers, shares of TVS rose 1.55% to ₹1,156 per share. Its electric vehicle, the iQube, reached a sales milestone of 1 lakh units. “The production for April 2023 was constrained due to AIS156 changeover and supply chain challenges, TVS Motor is confident of ramping up from the month of May 2023. The order book for TVS iQube continues to be very robust and TVS Motor will retain the growth momentum,” said the company in an exchange filing. At the same time, Eicher Motors reported a 18% on year jump in sales volumes of Royal Enfield motorcycles at 73,136 units against 62,155 units last year. Meanwhile, the international business of the company declined 49% to 4,255 units that were exported in April 2023 as against 8,303 units in April 2022. The models with engine capacity up to 350cc recorded 26% sales growth at 64,728 units as against 51,564 units in April 2022. Meanwhile, the sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc dropped 21% to 8,408 units sold against 10,591 units in the same period last year. "Post the completion of the transaction, VECV and VBI will consolidate their bus businesses into a newly formed bus division within VECV. Eicher Motors registers first-ever net loss of ₹55 crore in at least a decade

<keyword id="80296" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="eicher-motors" source="Orion">Eicher Motors</keyword> on Monday said it has 'unanimously' decided to re-appoint <keyword id="121127" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="siddhartha-lal" source="Orion">Siddhartha Lal</keyword> as Managing Director of the company with effect from May 1, 2021, with changes in his remuneration package, a week after the company's shareholders rejected the proposal. The company said that the board of directors on Monday discussed the outcome of the <keyword id="1698727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="39th-agm" source="Orion">39th AGM</keyword> held on August 17, 2021. The matter pertaining to the re-appointment of Lal as Managing Director and the remuneration proposal was discussed comprehensively, and the Board unanimously decided to re-appoint him as Managing Director, with effect from May 1, 2021, Eicher Motors said in a statement. The Board will now go back to shareholders for approval through postal ballot, it added. Last week, the company's shareholders had rejected the re-appointment of Lal as Managing Director. The shareholders had voted against the proposal mainly due to the proposed increase in Lal's remuneration package. "The Nomination and Remuneration Committee (NRC) of the company has considered all the factors, including inputs from various stakeholders including institutional investors before recommending remuneration for key managerial persons. The primary concern with investors was not Siddhartha's reappointment as Managing Director or the proposed compensation; it was the lack of clarity regarding the enabling provision that potentially allowed payment of remuneration up to 3 per cent of profits," Eicher Motors Chairman S Sandilya said. Over the last four years, the company has had the same limit of 3 per cent, but in reality have paid only a fraction of that amount, he added. "The actual remuneration during FY2021 was at 1.04 per cent of profits, with the preceding years being at a lower percentage," Sandilya said. Given the background of actual remuneration paid to the Managing Director in preceding years, the Board has now approved a revised remuneration structure for the Managing Director, with a maximum cap of 1.5 per cent of profits, the company said. Specific details of the remuneration are being shared via the postal ballot, it added. "The remuneration increase in FY2021 is in line with the average 9.7 per cent increment given to all company employees for the year. The median, which is a measure of central tendency, is impacted by entry and exits of employees," Eicher Motors Independent Director and Chairperson of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee Manvi Sinha noted. During FY2021, 267 employees joined the company, out of which 77 per cent were hired at below the median salary and 284 employees exited the company out of which 66 per cent were drawing higher than the median salary, she added. "Owing to this, despite there being a 9.7 per cent average increase in salaries at Eicher Motors in FY2021, the median shows an increase of just 1 per cent. The board fully supports Siddhartha's appointment as Managing Director and his proposed compensation, and we are confident that our shareholders will support these resolutions as well," Sinha said. Elaborating on the role played by Lal in the growth of the company, Sandilya said that he has been the architect of Eicher Motors' growth story over the last two decades. "When he took over as CEO of <keyword id="94237" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="royal-enfield" source="Orion">Royal Enfield</keyword> in 2000, the division was making large losses and was slated for closure. Siddhartha has transformed Royal Enfield into a formidable premium motorcycling brand in India, pioneering the leisure riding segment," he stated. Royal Enfield, a part of Eicher Motors, grew the premium over 250cc market in India exponentially, and has maintained over 90 per cent market share in it for the last decade, resulting in EBITDA margins for EML at over 30 per cent during the pre-pandemic peak, Sandilya noted. Subsequently, Lal moved to the UK in 2015 to personally drive the company's ambition of becoming the first global premium consumer brand to emerge from India; there he was directly overseeing the product development and international expansion, he added. "Going forward, Siddhartha and his team at EML have charted out exciting and robust plans for the future. Royal Enfield, already the global leader in middleweight motorcycles (250cc-750cc), is on the path to growing this segment multi-fold globally and becoming the first global consumer brand to emerge from India. In addition to the motorcycle business, Eicher motors has a joint venture with Sweden's AB Volvo - VE Commercial Vehicles Limited (VECV). During the company's 39th AGM earlier this month, while 73 per cent of the votes favoured Lal's re-appointment as Managing Director, the rest 27 per cent were against it. As a special resolution, it needed support from 75 per cent of the votes cast to pass the proposal. Out of the total 21,74,67,139 votes, 15,88,49,543 (73.04 per cent) were in favour of the re-appointment while 5,86,17,596 (26.95 per cent) votes disapproved the proposal. Mahindra and Mahindra sees a ₹2,700 crore dent from Ssangyong and other global subsidiaries

We have been able to clear our BS-IV inventory, but for fewer than 100 vehicles. However, there are many vehicles that are sold, but not yet registered because of the closure of RTOs.” Better than peers Although, in comparison to its peers, the company has seen a speedy recovery— all thanks to its advantage of being India’s largest tractor maker. However, since then, the share price has been on a positive trajectory and recovered almost 66%. All eyes on the road ahead The company said the timely relaxation of the lockdown for the agricultural sector helped the company to ensure the speedy recovery of tractor demand during May. Although, the total tractor sales for the company declined 1% and stood at 24,341 units, as against 24,704 units May last year, any company would settle for it in the current context. Investors hope that the management commentary will remain bullish at least for the tractors segment, as the outlook for cars seems to be a foregone conclusion as estimates, from ratings agency Crisil to the one <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/auto/news/tata-motors-maruti-and-hyundai-offer-discounts-on-cars/articleshow/76324233.cms">from dealers association</a>, signal nearly a 25% drop in sales this year. Although in January to March quarter the lockdown was just for one week, the quarter turned out to be full of losses for M&amp;M — when the company reported a consolidated net loss of ₹3,255 crore, largely because of a one-time charge for global subsidiaries like Ssangyong. However, there’s no such indication of further investment in SsangYong, according to Prabhudas Liladher report. But the lost sales in April and early May might drag the profit. M&M’s farm equipment segment may have fueled investors hopes — but analysts aren’t too optimistic about it

India’s automobile sector is expected to get a boost during the upcoming festive season, with a forecasted growth of over 15%, particularly in the two-wheeler (2W) segment. According to an ANI report, this projection comes from a research report by <keyword id="23122458" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nuvama-wealth-investment-limited" source="keywords">Nuvama Wealth Investment Limited</keyword>, which attributes the growth to increased customer enquiries and a resurgence in rural demand. A key factor driving this surge is the anticipated revival of rural demand, which contributes more than 55% to the two-wheeler market. According to the report, rural areas are showing strong signs of recovery, and the increased enquiries suggest a positive outlook for sales. This bodes well for mass-market original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as TVS Motors, <keyword id="19983534" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hero-motocorp" source="keywords">Hero MotoCorp</keyword>, and <keyword id="19897354" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bajaj-auto" source="keywords">Bajaj Auto</keyword>. While growth in this area is expected to be in the single digits, it is anticipated that utility vehicles (UVs) will outpace hatchbacks with double-digit growth. This trend will likely benefit manufacturers such as Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and Tata Motors, with new models like the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Tata Currv expected to attract a significant share of customers. On the other hand, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, traditionally a strong player in the hatchback segment, may see more subdued growth compared to its rivals in the UV space. In preparation for the festive season, dealers have ramped up their inventories for both two-wheelers and passenger vehicles. According to the report, dealers have built up stocks for 1.5 to 2.5 months, signalling confidence in the market’s potential for increased sales. This build-up of inventory demonstrates that both manufacturers and dealers are optimistic about the surge in demand during the festive period. While two-wheelers and passenger vehicles are set to lead the charge this festive season, the commercial vehicle (CV) market is expected to grow at a more modest pace. Demand for medium and heavy commercial vehicles (MHCVs) is projected to increase in the low single digits, primarily driven by replacement demand as freight availability improves across India. Similarly, the tractor segment is expected to perform well over the next few years, with volume growth likely in the high single digits from FY24 to FY26. Tractors are seen as a strong performer in the long term, and the sector is poised to benefit from India’s agricultural demand and rural recovery. Looking beyond the festive season, the report suggests that the long-term outlook for the two-wheeler and tractor segments remains robust. Historical sales cycles, which typically span two to four years, suggest that these sectors could reach new peaks in the coming years. As a result, the report forecasts high single-digit volume growth for two-wheelers and tractors through FY24-26, while passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles are expected to see low single-digit growth.
