<ul><li><keyword id="15153866" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="paabo" source="Orion">Paabo</keyword> has been awarded the prestigious prize for having sequenced the genomes of our extinct relatives.</li><li>Paabo is widely regarded as having pioneered the field of ancient DNA</li><li>Nobel prize winner studied ancient DNA in material ranging from mummified humans to extinct ground sloths.</li></ul>The Nobel prize in physiology or medicine for 2022 has been awarded to Svante Paabo from the <keyword id="2306463" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="max-planck-institute-for-evolutionary-anthropology" source="Orion">Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology</keyword> in Leipzig, Germany, for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.<br /><br />In other words, Paabo has been awarded the prestigious prize for having sequenced the genomes of our extinct relatives, the Neanderthals and Denisovans, and for the fact that these discoveries have resulted in novel insights into human evolution.<br /><br />Paabo is widely regarded as having pioneered the field of ancient DNA, a research area dedicated to the recovery and analysis of DNA from historic and prehistoric remains.<br /><br />Although Paabo did his PhD in medical science at <keyword id="196985" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uppsala-university" source="Orion">Uppsala University</keyword> in Sweden in the early 1980s, he also studied <keyword id="2255540" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="egyptology" source="Orion">Egyptology</keyword> when he was at <keyword id="4100233" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="uppsala" source="Orion">Uppsala</keyword>. It was a logical next step that he took tools from molecular biology, garnered from his expertise in medical science, to better understand human prehistory.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Extracting DNA from ancient bones" comment="subhead" text="Extracting DNA from ancient bones"><span data-til="noop">Extracting DNA from ancient bones</span></cmsannotation><br />Beginning in the 1980s, Paabo studied ancient DNA in material ranging from mummified humans to extinct ground sloths. This work was technically challenging because ancient DNA is significantly degraded and can be contaminated.<br /><br />In the decade that followed, he developed a series of methods and guidelines to recover and interpret authentic DNA and to minimise the risk of contamination from modern sources, especially from contemporary humans.<br /><br />In the early 1990s, there was significant excitement in the field about the possibility of recovering DNA from dinosaurs. However, based on his knowledge on how DNA degrades over time, Paabo remained sceptical that DNA could survive such a long time. He was later proven right.<br /><br />For many of his colleagues, it was clear that P bo's goal was always to recover Neanderthal DNA. But he took his time and carefully developed the methods for recovering and authenticating ancient DNA until these methods were mature enough to accomplish this objective.<br /><br />Finally, in 1997, Paabo and his colleagues published the first Neanderthal DNA sequences. In 2010 this was followed by the entire Neanderthal genome (that is, all the genetic information stored in the DNA of one Neanderthal).<br /><br />Only a few years later, the group also published the genome from a previously unknown type of human, the Denisovans, distantly related to Neanderthals. This sequencing was based on a 40,000-year-old fragment of bone discovered in the Denisova cave in Siberia.<br /><br />By virtue of being able to compare these with human genomes, one of the most important findings of Paabo's work has been that many modern humans carry a small proportion of DNA from Neanderthals and Denisovans. Modern humans picked up these snippets of DNA through hybridisation, when modern and archaic humans mixed, as modern humans expanded across Eurasia during the last ice age.<br /><br />For example, particular Neanderthal genes affect how our immune system reacts to infections, including COVID-19. The Denisovan version of a gene called EPAS1, meanwhile, helps people survive at high altitudes. It's common among modern-day Tibetans.<br /><br />At the same time, in comparing the genomes of Neanderthals and Denisovans with those of modern humans, Paabo and his colleagues have been able to highlight genetic mutations that are not shared. Nobel prize winner Svante Paabo's DNA discoveries offer clues as to what makes us human

A healer, adorned in linen robes and an ornate headdress, stands over a patient in a dimly lit chamber. He is equipped with rudimentary yet precise copper tools. With a steady hand, he carefully carves into the patient’s skull. Invoking the blessings of Thoth, the god of medicine and wisdom, he bravely attempts to excise a deadly tumour.</em><br /><br />This isn't a scene from a historical drama, but a reality uncovered by recent research. Astonishingly, the battle against <keyword id="6355291" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cancer" source="Orion">cancer</keyword> didn’t start with modern medicine; it began over 4,000 years ago with the pioneering efforts of the ancient Egyptians. <br /><br />Ancient <keyword id="21853853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Egyptian-medical-practices" source="Orion">Egyptian medical practices</keyword> were incredibly advanced for their time. These early medical practitioners could diagnose and treat various diseases and injuries, construct prostheses and even perform dental work. Now, fresh discoveries have shown that they were not only identifying cancer but also performing intricate surgical procedures to treat it.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Unravelling ancient medical marvels" comment="subhead" text="Unravelling ancient medical marvels"><span data-til="noop">Unravelling ancient medical marvels</span></cmsannotation><br />To explore cancer’s historical prevalence, a research team examined two skulls from the <keyword id="20151405" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Cambridge" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="University of Cambridge" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="University of Cambridge">University of Cambridge</keyword>'s Duckworth Collection. Skull 236, from a male aged 30 to 35, dates back to between 2687 and 2345 BCE. Skull E270, from a female over 50, dates to between 663 and 343 BCE.<br /><br />Microscopic examination of Skull 236 revealed a large lesion indicative of neoplasm (an abnormal mass of tissue), accompanied by approximately 30 small, round metastasized lesions scattered across the skull. Similarly, Skull E270 displayed a significant lesion suggestive of a cancerous tumour that led to bone destruction.<br /><br />What astonished the researchers were cut marks around these lesions, likely made with a sharp metal instrument.<br /><br /><div type="image" title="skull cutmarks" msid="110531681" hostid="261" sizebytes="110612" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Cutmarks found on skull 236, probably made with a sharp object.&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div><br />“It seems ancient Egyptians performed some kind of surgical intervention related to the presence of cancerous cells, proving that ancient Egyptian medicine was also conducting experimental treatments or medical explorations in relation to cancer,” explained co-author Prof. Albert Isidro, an Egyptology specialist and a surgical oncologist at the University Hospital Sagrat Cor.<br /><br />“This finding is unique evidence of how ancient Egyptian medicine would have tried to deal with or explore cancer more than 4,000 years ago. This is an extraordinary new perspective in our understanding of the <keyword id="2702239" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="history-of-medicine" source="Orion">history of medicine</keyword>,” added Prof. Edgard Camarós, the study's lead author and a paleopathologist at the University of Santiago de Compostela.<br /><br />This discovery also suggests that although today's factors like lifestyle, ageing populations and environmental carcinogens increase cancer risk, the disease was also prevalent in ancient times. This shared human experience of battling illness across millennia marks an interesting link between us and our ancestors.<br /><br />However, the researchers cautioned that studying skeletal remains presents challenges, as they are often incomplete and lack clinical histories. From the sands of time: 4,000-year-old skulls reveal how ancient Egyptians tried to treat cancer!

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/napoleon-bonaparte-best-military-commanders-of-all-time-2017-11">Napoleon Bonaparte</a> brought engineers, architects, and scientists when he invaded Egypt.</li><li>In three stages, these "savants" meticulously illustrated the ruins of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/misconceptions-about-ancient-egyptians-mummies-cleopatra-that-are-wrong-experts-12">ancient Egypt</a>.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/napoleon-invasion-russia-moscow-1812-2023-11"><u>General Napoleon Bonaparte</u></a> is remembered as a crusader, tyrant, and initiator of a series of wars.</p><p>But one of his lesser-known offenses — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/napoleon-egypt-invasion-scientific-breakthroughs-2023-11">abandoning a crew of scholars and scientists in Egypt</a> — led to the unexpected byproduct of formal archaeology as we know it today.</p><p>When the French general invaded Egypt in 1798 — an event depicted somewhat <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/historians-absolutely-hate-ridley-scott-napoleon-movie-2023-11">ahistorically in the Ridley Scott film "Napoleon"</a> — he brought along more than 150 engineers, mathematicians, and naturalists.</p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/napoleon-invasion-russia-moscow-1812-2023-11">Napoleon</a> wanted these "savants," as scientists were called at the time, to focus on projects that could benefit France, such as purifying water from the Nile River, hops-free beer brewing, and better bread ovens.</p><p>Just a year later, Napoleon secretly returned to France to stage a coup and seize power, leaving his savant squad and 30,000 troops behind. They stayed until defeat forced them to retreat in 1801.</p><p>While the soldiers fought, some of the savants got busy conducting archaeological surveys.</p><h2><strong>The ruins of Upper Egypt wowed one of Napoleon's first savants</strong></h2><div type="image" title="egypt coffin mummy" height="1482" width="2200" msid="107273503" hostid="261" sizebytes="171190"></div><p>"Very few of the scholars were antiquarians, those quintessentially eighteenth-century characters, mostly wealthy, who filled their curiosity cabinets with strange old objects picked up on their travels, barely understanding what they had," Nina Burleigh writes in her book, "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/books/edition/Mirage/n--z6iyUooUC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=original">Mirage</a>," about Napoleon's scientists in Egypt. "Collecting old objects without understanding their use or meaning was a pastime for gentlemen, not a scientific undertaking."</p><p>In short, these men were approaching the exploration of Egypt with a different attitude that was more scientific.</p><p>At the time, many Europeans had heard of the Great Pyramids or the Sphinx, but the <a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-ancient-historical-sites-before-and-after-excavation-2023-8"><u>ancient temples and monuments</u></a> of Upper Egypt were unknown.</p><p>Dominique-Vivant Denon, an artist and writer, accompanied Napoleon's soldiers up the Nile. He wrote about rounding a river bend to suddenly see the ancient temples of Karnak and Luxor rising from the ruins of Thebes.</p><p>"The whole army, suddenly and with one accord, stood in amazement... and clapped their hands with delight," he wrote, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/issue/sa/1994/09-01/">Scientific American</a>.</p><div type="image" title="Drawing of the Edfu Temple in Egypt by Vivant Denon showing cracks in the structure and larger towers in the background" height="1601" width="3239" msid="107273505" hostid="261" sizebytes="550012"></div><p>Denon<strong> </strong>returned to France with Napoleon and quickly published a book with his descriptions and drawings, "Travels in Upper and Lower Egypt."</p><p>That was not enough for Denon, though, who pushed for sending more savants to the Nile to document its monuments in greater detail.</p><p>Napoleon approved, and two fresh commissions of savants arrived in Egypt on an archaeological mission in September 1799.</p><h2>Napoleon's savants published a giant encyclopedia of Egypt</h2><p>This crew of young <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://archive.archaeology.org/9905/abstracts/egypt.html"><u>architects and engineers</u></a> made careful drawings and measurements of a large number of ancient structures. Their depictions were so faithful that they preserved inscriptions that have since disappeared, according to Scientific American.</p><p>All these surveys were published in "La Description de l'Egypte," a multi-volume tome that included maps, hundreds of copper engravings, and essays describing what they'd learned about Egypt.</p><p>It divided Egypt into ancient and modern times, and launched the modern vision of ancient Egypt as we know it today.</p><p>"La Description de l'Egypte" was extremely popular. The structures, symbols, and images of ancient Egypt became <a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-9054-0&amp;sa=D&amp;source=docs&amp;ust=1706317695608651&amp;usg=AOvVaw0p4Qi9JWhWWUVqADsqMn0s">fashionable</a> features of European art and architecture.</p><h2>Europe's Egypt obsession led to its first museums of archaeology</h2><div type="image" title="A picture shows the inside of a sarcophagus, in which is placed an ancient Egyptian mummy in good state of conservation , under an ornate cartonnage and a mask representing the deceased's face." height="593" width="1055" msid="107273508" hostid="261" sizebytes="51838"></div><p>Goaded on by Napoleon's savant expeditions, the European fascination with ancient Egypt gave rise to archaeological museums in Europe, beginning with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.louvre.fr/en/explore/the-palace/the-guardian-of-egyptian-art">Louvre</a> opening the first Egyptian museum in 1827.</p><p>Eventually, this fascination led to the field of Egyptology, which has been a heavy influence in modern archaeology.</p><p>"Napoleon's scholars and engineers are remembered most as men who helped found archaeology as a science," Burleigh writes.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Photos show the inside of a young teen's mummy from 2,300 years ago. </li><li>The child, nicknamed the "golden boy," was mummified with 49 protective amulets.</li></ul><p>A teen boy whose mummy had been stored in a museum since 1916 was covered in precious amulets, a study published Tuesday found.  </p><p>A team of scientists has digitally unwrapped the 2,300-year-old mummy using a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancient-egypt-ways-tech-changed-ancient-egyptian-mummies-egyptology-2022-8">CT scanner to uncover its secrets</a>. </p><p>The team found that the so-called "golden boy" was lavishly mummified with gold and semi-precious stones. Forty-nine protective amulets were precisely placed in three columns on his body, suggesting he was rich and of high status. </p><div type="image" title="A colourful cartonage painted with hieroglyphs was found on the boy's mummy." height="1499" width="1999" msid="97282385" hostid="261" sizebytes="124164"></div><p>The finding is "definitely extraordinary" as high-ranking mummies were often pillaged for their precious ornaments, Sahar Saleem, study author and a professor of radiology at the faculty of medicine at Cairo University, told Insider in an email. </p><p>Because this mummy has not been disturbed, it provides a unique insight into how embalmers would carefully place the amulets on the body to protect the dead, she said.</p><h2>Amulets to protect the dead</h2><div type="image" title="An image from the CT scan shows a 3D rendering of the mummy. Amulets of varying shapes and sizes, represented by white shapes, are placed on the boy's partially skelotonized body. caption: The CT scan revealed amulets, shown here in white, placed in three columns on the boy's body" height="3225" width="2000" msid="97282387" hostid="261" sizebytes="159428"></div><p>"Ancient Egyptians believed in the power of amulets, which depended on its material, color, and shape," said Saleem. </p><p>"During mummification, the embalmers said prayers and recited verses from the 'Book of the Dead' while placing amulets inside the mummy or in between the wrappings," she said.</p><p>Each amulet had a specific meaning to protect the boy, who was about 14 or 15 years old when he died. </p><h2>A scarab amulet for the heart, and a gold tongue for speech</h2><p>A scarab-shaped amulet near the boy's heart, engraved with verses from the Book of the Dead, would have helped him be judged kindly in the afterlife, Saleem said. </p><div type="image" title="A crosssection of the boy's torso shows the scarab amulet placed near his heart." height="1500" width="2000" msid="97282392" hostid="261" sizebytes="81032"></div><p>"The heart scarab was mentioned in Chapter 30 of the Book of the Dead; it was very important in the afterlife during judging the deceased and weighing of the heart against the feather of Maat," the goddess of truth, justice, balance, and most order, Saleem said. </p><p>"The heart scarab silenced the heart in the Judgement day so not to bear witness against the deceased," she added. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancient-egypt-mummies-buried-gold-tongue-converse-with-gods-2022-12">golden tongue-shaped leaf</a> was also placed in the boy's mouth. The "Two-finger" amulet is meant to bring protection to the incision they made on the torso, Saleem said.</p><p>The other amulets had other varied protective roles. A "flask" amulet represented carrying holy water in the afterlife. A "Djed" amulet, representing the backbone of god Osiris, ensured the safe revival of the deceased. Dried ferns are placed 334 on a light beige rectangular linen on the front surface of the body" height="1000" width="2000" msid="97282396" hostid="261" sizebytes="69658"></div><p>These findings are "exciting," Wojciech Ejsmond, an Egyptologist from the Warsaw Mummy Project who was not involved in the study, told Insider in an email. </p><p>"This study is providing valuable information on how ancient Egyptians lived, died, and what they thought will happen next," he said.</p><h2>Sandals made for walking</h2><div type="image" title="CT scan images show the mumy was wearing thin sandals" height="942" width="1885" msid="97282397" hostid="261" sizebytes="74124"></div><p>The boy was also found to be wearing white sandals in his grave. Per the Book of the Dead, the deceased had to wear white sandals and be pious and clean before reciting its verses.</p><p>"The sandals were probably meant to enable the boy to walk out of the coffin," <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/977129" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Saleem said in a press release.</a></p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Golden sandals were also found in the royal tombs; e.g. Thutmose III," Saleem told Insider. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">This may indicate that while the boy was high-ranking, he may not have been royal. </p><h2>An insight into ancient Egyptian circumcision </h2><p>Another unexpected finding is to do with the boy's penis. Saleem said the scan suggests the boy was not circumcised. That's unlike another high-ranking figure, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-tech-scanners-egyptian-pharaoh-healthy-35-amenhotep-2021-12">King Amenhotep I,</a> whom Saleem studied as well. </p><p>This may indicate that ancient Egyptians were only circumcised in adulthood, Saleem said. </p><p>But Salima Ikram, head of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/jan/24/digital-scan-unwraps-secrets-of-mummy-from-2300-years-ago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has another theory.</a></p><p>"The lack of circumcision is interesting as it might tell us something about his ethnicity – Egyptians tended to be circumcised generally before the age of 13," she told The Guardian. </p><p>"It might suggest that foreigners adopted Egyptian burial practices – and we know the Persians did," she said. </p><p>She cautioned, however: "I wouldn't hang all of this on one fragile foreskin."</p><h2>Who was this boy? </h2><div type="image" title="The mummy is shown inside its large wodden sarcophagus." height="1499" width="1999" msid="97282398" hostid="261" sizebytes="68542"></div><p>The boy may yield more secrets still. </p><p>According to the Cairo Egyptian Museum records, he was first uncovered in 1916 in a cemetery used from BC 332 to BC 30 in Nag el-Hassay, Southern Egypt. </p><p>The boy would have been "the eyewitness of the dusk of the ancient Egyptian civilization, possibly the turmoils during the time of the last Ptolemaic kings, and perhaps even a short revival of Egypt's greatness during Cleopatra's reign," Ejsmond said. </p><p>His name is, as of now, unknown. But scientists are studying his sarcophagus closely to find more clues as to who he was, Saleem said. </p><p>The results were <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmed.2022.1028377/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published in the peer-reviewed journal</a> Frontiers in Medicine on Tuesday. </p>

2,300-year-old 'golden boy' mummy was found with 49 amulets, including a gold tongue to let him speak with the gods

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A deposit of hundreds of mummification tools is likely the largest ever found in Egypt.</li><li>It could shed light on <keyword id="12424596" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ancient-egypt" source="Orion">Ancient Egypt</keyword>'s still-mysterious mummification process. </li></ul><p>A deposit of hundreds of embalming tools uncovered in Abusir, Egypt — probably the largest ever found — offers clues into a lavish funeral that likely took place about 2,600 years ago. </p><p>The deposit of at least 370 ceramic jars — some of which carried heads to represent sacred animal deities — could provide unprecedented insight into the mummification process, experts told Insider. </p><div type="image" title="Ceramic jars found in the Abusir embalming shaft." height="1333" width="1777" msid="89756334" hostid="261"></div><p>"This is a really exciting and important discovery," Wojciech Ejsmond, an Egyptologist from the Warsaw Mummy Project who was not involved in the study, told Insider in an email.</p><p>"We know hundreds of <keyword id="12839156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mummies" source="Orion">mummies</keyword> but our knowledge regarding the embalming process still has many gaps."</p><p>Embalming shafts or caches were commonly used in Ancient Egypt, said Miroslav Bárta, lead archaeologist on the mission and a professor of archaeology at Charles University in Prague.</p><p>He told Insider they were used to store any tool, container, or object that came into contact with the body during the 70 day-long embalming process.</p><div type="image" title="The embalming shaft is seen from the surface, with people excavating the site at the bottom of the shaft." height="1333" width="1777" msid="89756337" hostid="261"></div><p>The shafts of Abusir, a cemetery for ancient Egyptian elites from the neighboring city of Memphis, have been particularly rich in artifacts.</p><p>Such rich caches "can be called a 'cookbook' for making mummies," Ejsmond said.</p><p>Another Abusir embalming shaft, of the tomb of <a href="https://cegu.ff.cuni.cz/en/2007/11/22/the-shaft-tomb-of-menekhibnekau/">Menekhibnekau</a>, a high-ranking general, contained about 300 jars. </p><p>By comparison, the embalming cache of King Tutankhamun, a <keyword id="12839157" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pharaoh" source="Orion">Pharaoh</keyword> from the height of Egypt's ancient prosperity, only contained about a dozen, Ejsmond said. </p><p><a href="https://cegu.ff.cuni.cz/en/2007/11/22/the-shaft-tomb-of-menekhibnekau/">Menekhibnekau's</a> embalming shaft "provided fascinating details, especially since there is no ancient text detailing the mummification process," he said. </p><p>"The current discovery made by the Czech mission has great potential. As Prof. Barta said, it can elucidate the sequence of events in the embalming process."</p><div type="image" title="An aerial view of the site shows the embalming shaft next to the bigger tomb, the later still being covered" height="1500" width="2000" msid="89756338" hostid="261"></div><p>The newly uncovered embalming shaft is about 16 ft wide and 50 ft deep. That is unusually large, per Bárta.</p><p>A tomb adjoining the shaft is also vast, about 45 ft wide and more than 65 ft deep.</p><p>This tomb has yet to be excavated and not much is known about the person buried there.</p><p>But because of where the tomb is and the lavishness of the embalming shaft, it is probably the resting place of one of the highest dignitaries of his time, around the 6th century BC.</p><p>He was perhaps a male priest, general, or official close to the pharaoh, Bárta said. </p><p>The name "Wahibre-mery-Neith," which translates to "king beloved by the goddess Neith," was found on one of the jars, and it is "highly probable" that this was his name, said Ladislav Bareš, an archaeologist on the dig and professor of Egyptology, also from the Charles University.</p><div type="image" title="People working to uncover the jars in the embalming shaft in Abusir." height="1333" width="1777" msid="89756340" hostid="261"></div><p>This display of wealth and over-the-top devotion seen in Abusir might have to do with the tense political situation at the time in Egypt, per Bárta. </p><p>"This particular cemetery of shafts in Abusir is a wonderful example of a collapsing society that is desperate for finding new means to prevent their collapse," he said.</p><p>At around the 6th century BC, Egypt civilization was in decline. Nearby Greeks, Persians, and Nubians were looking to take over, threatening the Egyptian way of life. </p><p>This coincided with a revival of ancient sacred rites, including the recreation of elaborate historic funerals and the return to worshipping many kinds of different sacred animals, Bárta said.</p><p>"The ancient Egyptians were doing what every culture does when it's under attack from the outside: they reach back to their roots," Bárta said.</p><p>"Which of course is highly interesting anthropological behavior but in most cases fails, and it also failed in case of ancient Egyptians."</p>

Largest-ever stash of mummy-embalming tools found in Egypt, may have been for lavish funeral 2,600 years ago

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An Egyptian <keyword id="12424597" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mummy" source="Orion">mummy</keyword> embalmed with advanced techniques is believed to be much older than initially thought.</li><li>The discovery suggests sophisticated mummification skills were used 1,000 years earlier than previously believed.</li></ul><p>A new analysis of an ancient Egyptian mummy suggests that advanced mummification techniques were used 1,000 years earlier than previously believed, rewriting the understood history of ancient Egyptian funerary practices.</p><p>The discovery centers around a mummy, known as Khuwy, believed to have been a high-ranking nobleman. He was excavated at the necropolis, a vast ancient burial ground of Egyptian pharaohs and royals near Cairo, in 2019.</p><p>Scientists now believe that Khuwy is much older than previously thought, dating back to Egypt's Old Kingdom, which would make him one of the oldest Egyptian mummies ever to be discovered, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/oct/24/mummys-older-than-we-thought-new-find-rewrites-the-history-books"> The Observer</a> reported.</p><p>The Old Kingdom spanned 2,700 to 2,200 B.C.E and was known as the "Age of the Pyramid Builders."</p><p>Khuwy was embalmed using advanced techniques thought to have been developed much later.</p><p>His skin was preserved using expensive resins made from tree sap, and his body was impregnated with resins and bound with high-quality linen dressings.</p><p>The new analysis suggests that ancient Egyptians living around 4,000 years ago were carrying out sophisticated burials.</p><p>"This would completely turn our understanding of the evolution of mummification on its head," Professor Salima Ikram, head of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, told The Observer. </p><p>"If this is indeed an Old Kingdom mummy, all books about mummification and the history of the Old Kingdom will need to be revised."</p><div type="image" title="saqqara january 2021" height="3648" width="4864" msid="87395614" hostid="261"></div><p>"Until now, we had thought that Old Kingdom mummification was relatively simple, with basic desiccation - not always successful - no removal of the brain, and only occasional removal of the internal organs," Ikram told The Observer.  </p><p>Ikram was surprised by the amount of resin used to preserve the mummy, which is not often recorded in mummies from the Old Kingdom.</p><p>She added that typically more attention was paid to the exterior appearance of the deceased than the interior. </p><p>"This mummy is awash with resins and textiles and gives a completely different impression of mummification. In fact, it is more like mummies found 1,000 years later," she said.</p><p>Ikram told T<a href="https://www.thenationalnews.com/mena/egypt/2021/10/25/egyptian-mummy-could-help-archaeologists-rewrite-the-history-books/">he National </a>that the resin used would have been imported from the Near East, most likely Lebanon, demonstrating that trade with neighboring empires around that time was more extensive than previously thought.</p><p>The discovery has been documented in National Geographic's new series, Lost Treasures of Egypt, which starts airing on 7 November. </p><p>Tom Cook, who produced the series for Windfall Films, told The Observer that Ikram initially could not believe that Khuwy dated back to the Old Kingdom because of the advanced mummification techniques.</p><p>"They knew the pottery in the tomb was Old Kingdom but [Ikram] didn't think that the mummy was from [that period] because it was preserved too well," Cook told the outlet.</p><p>"But over the course of the investigation she started to come round [to the idea]."</p><p>Khuwy's ornate tomb featured hieroglyphics that suggested the burial took place during the Fifth Dynasty period, spanning the early 25th to mid-24th century B.C.E, <a href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/sophisticated-egyptian-mummification-techniques-may-be-much-older-than-thought-180978929/">The Smithsonian </a>said.</p><p>Archeologists also found pottery and jars used to store body parts during the mummification process that dated back to that time.</p><p>Ikram's team will conduct more tests to confirm that the remains do belong to Khuwy.</p><p>She told The National that one possibility was that another person could have been mummified and buried centuries later in a re-purposing of the tomb.</p><p>"I remain hesitant until we can conduct carbon-14 dating," Ikram told the outlet, adding that it would likely take six to eight months.</p>

The coffins include "colors and inscriptions in full," according to a press release announcing the finding.</p><p>The sarcophagi were unearthed in the Asasif Necropolis of the ancient town of West Thebes, on the west bank of the Nile. They were stacked in two layers. Will.i.am launched an augmented reality app that brings comic book pages to life

<p></div><p></p></div></div>Artificial limbs have come a long way.</p>
<p>Long before the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bionic-man-bertolt-meyer-on-the-future-2014-8">bionic man</a>, prosthetics designed to replace lost body parts offered limited movement and might be crafted out of materials found at hand, like wood and other fibers. </p>
<p>"In the past, prosthetics looked very much like what they were replacing," said Jacky Finch, a researcher in the KNH Center for Biomedical Egyptology at the University of Manchester. Finch was the lead author of a 2012 study published in the <a href="http://journals.lww.com/jpojournal/Abstract/2012/10000/Biomechanical_Assessment_of_Two_Artificial_Big_Toe.4.aspx" target="_blank">Journal of Prosthetics &amp; <span>Orthotics</span></a> that describes two different artificial toes from ancient Egypt, believed to be the earliest known artificial body parts. "Nowadays, implants are placed in the sensory system to control nerve action, rather than devices attached to the body by straps or artificially powered," she said. </p>
<p>Prosthetics have been around since ancient times, but the technology did not really take off until the two World Wars. A large number of amputees from war injuries tested the ingenuity of engineers and spurred the growth of artificial limb manufacturers. </p>

<p>“It’s fun, it’s Oxford Street. It’s a great, eclectic mix of people and you see them all coming in here, from the drag queens to the transgendered to the cute little gay boys and the straights.”</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The owner of Risqué Adult Boutique on Darlinghurst Road in Kings Cross said despite earning a degree in Egyptology, she had always wanted to work in a sex store, “Because I thought it was cool and fun.”</span></p>
<p>“People are happy to shop. They come in and they have fun – they are not in a bad mood. It’s a great job, I love it,” she said.</p>
<p>In the nine years since she started the store, she said she had never had a bad reaction after telling someone what she did for a living.</p>
<p>“Australian people are very open-minded. I am not ashamed to say I work in a sex shop. There are lots of parties in Sydney, people like to dress up.”</p>
<p>Another worker, a man at a store in Paddington, said the slower pace of trade had its perks.</p>
<p>“It’s the best way to get paid to do something and then do something else.”</p>

I liked the character, who she was, and my nephews had played the game already. I asked them, "You know about something called Stormfall?" and they said "Yeah, we play it all the time!"</span></p><p><strong>BI: What did you particularly like about the character?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">She's similar to me in that she's very rebellious, and has a dark sense of humor, and is an outspoken personality in a man's world, in this very patriarchal society. And so I liked that about her, of course, I mean you're going to find that in video games a lot. You're not going to find the damsel in distress that often. But I liked it. It seemed like an easy match.</span></p><p><strong>BI: Do you play games much yourself?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">I did. I mean, I grew up with a Super Nintendo like everyone else, and so I used to play games for little kids and then that parlayed itself into having an Xbox when I was older. And even all the way into my early 20s, before I had my own kids, when I had tons of time to waste, I used to game a lot and I got really into - I'm really competitive - so I got into Halo and I used to play online a lot, but I haven't played in a while. But it is something I grew up doing, so I am very familiar with that world.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Megan Fox</span></p></div><p></p></div></div> </span></p><p><strong>BI: Which were your favorites?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">Growing up, I mean I played little kid games, like one of my first games was Aladin, because that movie had just come out when I was five or six. But then my older sister played, I can't exactly remember the name of it. I think it's Ghosts n' Goblins, or Ghouls and Ghosts, or something like that [it's probably </span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghosts_%27n_Goblins"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ghosts n' Goblins</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">]. It was a game that was too old for me, but I would sneak and play it when she wasn't in the basement. That's where our system was. And so I loved that because it felt like something I shouldn't be doing, that was just too adult for me.</span></p><p><strong>BI: Have you ever considered having your own game, not just lending your likeness?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">Obviously it's a good business venture because everyone is making tons of money doing that. I haven't really considered it because it would have be something I really liked and would want to play myself. If I was to create a character in a game it would kind of have to be like a female Indiana Jones but that's what Tomb Raider is, so that's not a new territory. Unless I came up with something original that I actually loved, I wouldn't do it. But yeah, people are crushing it, making crazy money right now. </span></p><p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Megan Fox</span></p><p class="caption">Megan Fox filming for the game.</p></div><p></p></div></div>BI: Why a female Indiana Jones?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">I grew up always wanting that. I've always just loved archaeology and Egyptology in general, and then that character in those movies made that stuff very exciting. I want to be an adventurer. That's what I would love to do with my life. I'm not exactly sure, I've just have been drawn to it. </span></p><p><strong>BI: I feel like you could be a professional adventurer. Or is that more of a 1920s or 1940s thing?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">Yeah, but it could circle round again. I don't have the education to ever be a real Egyptologist, but I have the passion for it. I don't know, we'll see. I'm gonna try it, see if it's possible. </span></p><p><strong>BI: What about cell phone games?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">I have two babies so I have zero time. There are no games on my phone, I barely have time to check emails, so I'm not up on that.</span></p><p><strong>BI: What's surprised you about being a mother?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">I think you can never really anticipate how much sleep you're going to lose. You're not going to sleep for at least ten years. And people say that, but you can never prepare yourself. You don't understand. And then you have a choice, you can either engage your kids, which is what you're supposed to do, or you can check out and sit on your cell phone and computer, which I would never want to do. But if you choose to engage your children all day, every day, it's exhausting. There's zero time for you to have adult thoughts, so your brain kinds of turns to scrambled eggs sometimes. At the end of the day I've short-circuited. My brain doesn't work anymore. </span></p><p><strong>BI: Do you have any limits on technology with your kids?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">I'm really strict with that stuff, actually. Because there's so many studies coming out about how it affects a developing brain, and so I think for them, I'm going to keep them away from technology until they're older, until they're teenagers, and the brain has started to mature, and can handle the exposure to stuff like that. But I've watched the generation that came before them, like my nephews are 12-14. That's before any of these studies were coming out, and no one was concerned with, "How it this going to affect kids." So those kids were raised with GameBoys in their hands. But I see the interpersonal, neuro effects it has on kids becoming adults, and how it affects them socially. So I've had the opportunity to watch it go wrong, and that's why I'm really careful with my kids. [Nope]. These kids do a science experiment and they create a human robot that's a woman - you should watch it. It was in the 80's, and so they create her and then she's this robot prancing around in her underwear and they don't know what to do. It's a pretty funny movie, I suggest you watch it, and I think I would have a lot of fun making that movie if they ever do it. </span></p><p><strong>BI: What about that appeals to you?</strong></p><p><strong>Fox: </strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">It's nostalgia from my very, very early childhood. I probably shouldn't have seen it when I was that young.
