<ul class="summary-list"><li>Archeologists uncovered what is likely the oldest mummy ever discovered in Egypt on Thursday.</li><li>Archaeologists discovered the 4,300-year-old Hekashepes near the Step Pyramid wrapped in gold leaf.</li></ul><p>A team of archaeologists unearthed what could be the "oldest" and "most complete" mummy ever discovered in Egypt, the leader of the excavation announced on Thursday.</p><p>Thought to be the remains of a man named Hekashepes, archaeologists found the 4,300-year-old mummy in an ancient tomb near Cairo from the country's fifth and sixth dynasty — which spanned from the years 2500 BC to 2100 BC, Zahi Hawass, Egypt's former minister of antiquities, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn5ADD9ttgE/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>. </p><p>"I put my head inside to see what was inside the sarcophagus: A beautiful mummy of a man completely covered in layers of gold," Hawass told <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/egypts-oldest-mummy-found-covered-in-layers-of-gold-following-year-long-excavation-12796367" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reporters</a> at the site of the excavation. </p><p>The centuries-old mummy was found at the bottom of a 15-meter shaft near the Step Pyramid at the Necropolis of Saqqara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Amulets of varying shapes and sizes, represented by white shapes, are placed on the boy's partially skelotonized body. caption: The CT scan revealed amulets, shown here in white, placed in three columns on the boy's body" height="3225" width="2000" msid="97282387" hostid="261" sizebytes="159428"></div><p>"Ancient Egyptians believed in the power of amulets, which depended on its material, color, and shape," said Saleem. </p><p>"During mummification, the embalmers said prayers and recited verses from the 'Book of the Dead' while placing amulets inside the mummy or in between the wrappings," she said.</p><p>Each amulet had a specific meaning to protect the boy, who was about 14 or 15 years old when he died. </p><h2>A scarab amulet for the heart, and a gold tongue for speech</h2><p>A scarab-shaped amulet near the boy's heart, engraved with verses from the Book of the Dead, would have helped him be judged kindly in the afterlife, Saleem said. </p><div type="image" title="A crosssection of the boy's torso shows the scarab amulet placed near his heart." height="1500" width="2000" msid="97282392" hostid="261" sizebytes="81032"></div><p>"The heart scarab was mentioned in Chapter 30 of the Book of the Dead; it was very important in the afterlife during judging the deceased and weighing of the heart against the feather of Maat," the goddess of truth, justice, balance, and most order, Saleem said. </p><p>"The heart scarab silenced the heart in the Judgement day so not to bear witness against the deceased," she added. </p><p>A <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ancient-egypt-mummies-buried-gold-tongue-converse-with-gods-2022-12">golden tongue-shaped leaf</a> was also placed in the boy's mouth. The "Two-finger" amulet is meant to bring protection to the incision they made on the torso, Saleem said.</p><p>The other amulets had other varied protective roles. A "flask" amulet represented carrying holy water in the afterlife. A "Djed" amulet, representing the backbone of god Osiris, ensured the safe revival of the deceased. Dried ferns are placed 334 on a light beige rectangular linen on the front surface of the body" height="1000" width="2000" msid="97282396" hostid="261" sizebytes="69658"></div><p>These findings are "exciting," Wojciech Ejsmond, an Egyptologist from the Warsaw Mummy Project who was not involved in the study, told Insider in an email. </p><p>"This study is providing valuable information on how ancient Egyptians lived, died, and what they thought will happen next," he said.</p><h2>Sandals made for walking</h2><div type="image" title="CT scan images show the mumy was wearing thin sandals" height="942" width="1885" msid="97282397" hostid="261" sizebytes="74124"></div><p>The boy was also found to be wearing white sandals in his grave. Per the Book of the Dead, the deceased had to wear white sandals and be pious and clean before reciting its verses.</p><p>"The sandals were probably meant to enable the boy to walk out of the coffin," <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/977129" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Saleem said in a press release.</a></p><p style="font-weight: 400;">"Golden sandals were also found in the royal tombs; e.g. Thutmose III," Saleem told Insider. </p><p style="font-weight: 400;">This may indicate that while the boy was high-ranking, he may not have been royal. </p><h2>An insight into ancient Egyptian circumcision </h2><p>Another unexpected finding is to do with the boy's penis. Saleem said the scan suggests the boy was not circumcised. That's unlike another high-ranking figure, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-tech-scanners-egyptian-pharaoh-healthy-35-amenhotep-2021-12">King Amenhotep I,</a> whom Saleem studied as well. </p><p>This may indicate that ancient Egyptians were only circumcised in adulthood, Saleem said. </p><p>But Salima Ikram, head of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2023/jan/24/digital-scan-unwraps-secrets-of-mummy-from-2300-years-ago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has another theory.</a></p><p>"The lack of circumcision is interesting as it might tell us something about his ethnicity – Egyptians tended to be circumcised generally before the age of 13," she told The Guardian. </p><p>"It might suggest that foreigners adopted Egyptian burial practices – and we know the Persians did," she said. </p><p>She cautioned, however: "I wouldn't hang all of this on one fragile foreskin."</p><h2>Who was this boy? </h2><div type="image" title="The mummy is shown inside its large wodden sarcophagus." height="1499" width="1999" msid="97282398" hostid="261" sizebytes="68542"></div><p>The boy may yield more secrets still. </p><p>According to the Cairo Egyptian Museum records, he was first uncovered in 1916 in a cemetery used from BC 332 to BC 30 in Nag el-Hassay, Southern Egypt. </p><p>The boy would have been "the eyewitness of the dusk of the ancient Egyptian civilization, possibly the turmoils during the time of the last Ptolemaic kings, and perhaps even a short revival of Egypt's greatness during Cleopatra's reign," Ejsmond said. </p><p>His name is, as of now, unknown. But scientists are studying his sarcophagus closely to find more clues as to who he was, Saleem said. </p><p>The results were <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmed.2022.1028377/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published in the peer-reviewed journal</a> Frontiers in Medicine on Tuesday. </p>

2,300-year-old 'golden boy' mummy was found with 49 amulets, including a gold tongue to let him speak with the gods

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Archaeologists discovered 16 burial shafts at the Taposiris Magna Temple near Alexandria, <keyword id="6354912" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="egypt">Egypt</keyword>.</li><li>Those shafts contained 2,000-year-old <keyword id="26858" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="mummies">mummies</keyword>. One mummy had a gold tongue; some were buried wearing death masks. </li><li>Embalmers gave mummies golden tongues so the dead could speak to the gods in the afterlife.</li></ul><p>Two millennia ago, ancient Egyptians were laid to rest in the Taposiris Magna Temple outside Alexandria. Their organs were removed, and their bodies wrapped in linens.</p><p>One mummy was given a great honor: priests and embalmers placed a gold amulet shaped like a tongue in its mouth, so that the dead could speak with gods like Osiris - lord of the Egyptian underworld - in the afterlife.</p><p>The golden tongued mummy was among countless others recently discovered in Alexandria, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities <a href="https://www.facebook.com/moantiquities/posts/3782173178494971">announced Friday</a>.</p><p>A joint mission of Egyptian and Dominican archaeologists found 16 burial shafts carved from rock under the temple.</p><p>The mummies inside were "in a state of poor preservation," the ministry said, adding that this was characteristic of mummification during the Greek and Roman eras. </p><h2>Some mummies were decorated after they were buried</h2><h2><div type="image" title="egypt alexandria" height="750" width="1000" msid="80660118" hostid="261"></div></h2><p>The mummy with the gilded tongue wasn't the only star of the recent finding.</p><p>According to Dominican archaeologist Kathleen Martínez, who led the expedition, two of the most important mummies the group found were buried with decorative cartonnage - a material made of papyrus and linen that Egyptian used to encase mummies head to toe.</p><p>One mummy's cartonnage depicted Osiris, while the other is decorated with a crown of horns, a cobra snake on its forehead, and a falcon-head necklace, which symbolizes Horus, the Egyptian sun god.</p><p>The two mummies were also entombed with partial scrolls, which are now being deciphered. </p><p>Diggers found another mummy wearing a death mask with eye holes; death masks helped guide spirits of the deceased back to their bodies and protected the dead in the afterlife.</p><p>Khaled Abo El Hamd, director general of the Alexandria antiquities ministry, reported the expedition had also unearthed eight marble heads dating back to the Greek and Roman eras.</p><div type="image" title="egypt alexandria" height="750" width="1000" msid="80660120" hostid="261"></div><p>The heads were sculpted to resemble their owners, who may have been buried in the temple.</p><h2>Mysteries of the Taposiris Magna Temple</h2><p>This isn't the first time the Taposiris Magna Temple, or the "great temple of Osiris," has excited archaeologists. Martínez thinks the fabled Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt who died in 30 B.C., is buried there.</p><div type="image" title="Cleopatra elizabeth taylor" height="606" width="808" msid="80660121" hostid="261"></div><p>In July, Martínez found mummies that were covered in gold before being buried around the time of Cleopatra's reign. The gold coverings suggest the two people were <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/jul/12/sensational-egypt-find-offers-clues-in-hunt-for-cleopatras-tomb">important members of society</a> that may have interacted with the queen.</p><p>Martínez also <a href="https://www.livescience.com/where-is-cleopatra-tomb.html">found coins</a> minted during Cleopatra's reign at the site. </p><p>But according to Zahi Hawass, the former Egyptian minister of the State for Antiquities who worked with Martínez for a decade, there's "no evidence" Cleopatra is buried at Taposiris Magna. </p><p>"I believe now that Cleopatra was buried in her tomb that she built next to her palace and it is under the water," Hawass told Live <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword>. "Her tomb will never be found."</p><p>Archaeologists found Cleopatra's palace more than four decades ago, 20 feet under the waves of Alexandria's eastern harbor.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Nothing-Is-True-Everything-Possible/dp/1610394550?tag=bisafetynet-20" target="_blank"></div><p></p></div></div>Next door is a spa and beauty salon. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You go for your gold-digger lessons, then you go get waxed and tanned.</span></p><p>The teacher is a forty-something redhead with a psychology degree, an MBA, and a shrill smile, her voice high and prim, a Miss Jean Brodie in short skirts: "Never wear jewelry on a first date, the man should think you're poor. Make him want to buy you jewelry. Arrive in a broken-down car: make him want to buy you a smarter one."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The students take notes in neat writing. They have paid a thousand dollars for each week of the course. There are dozens of such "academies" in Moscow and St. Petersburg, with names such as "Geisha School" or "How to Be a Real Woman."</span></p><p>"Go to an expensive area of town," continues the instructress. "Stand with a map and pretend you are lost. A wealthy man might approach to help."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"I want a man who can stand strong on [his] own two feet. Who will make me feel as safe as behind a wall of stone," says Oliona, a recent graduate, employing the parallel language of the gold digger (what she means is she wants a man with money).</span></p><p>Usually Oliona wouldn't even think of talking to me, one of those impossible-to-access girls who would bat me away with a flick of her eyelashes. But I'm going to put her on television, and that changes everything.</p><p>The show is going to be called How to Marry a Millionaire. I had thought it would be tough to get Oliona to talk, that she would be shy about her life. Quite the opposite: she can't wait to tell the world; the way of the gold digger has become one of the country's favorite myths. Bookstores are stocked with self-help books telling girls how to bag a millionaire. A roly-poly pimp, Peter Listerman, is a TV celebrity.</p><p>He doesn't call himself a pimp (that would be illegal), but a "matchmaker." Girls pay him to introduce them to rich men. Rich men pay him to introduce them to girls.</p><p>His agents, gay teenage boys, search at the train stations, looking for long-legged, lithe young things who have come to Moscow for some sort of life. Listerman calls the girls his "chickens"; he poses for photos with kebab sticks of grilled poussins: "Come to me if you're after chicken," his advertisements say.</p><p>Oliona lives in a small, sparkly new apartment with her nervous little dog. The apartment is on one of the main roads that leads to billionaire's row, Rublevka.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Rich men put their mistresses there so they can nip in and visit them on the way home.</p><p>She first came to Moscow from Donbas, a Ukrainian mining region taken over by mafia bosses in the 1990s. Her mother was a hairdresser.</p><p>Oliona studied the same profession, but her mother's little boutique went bust.</p><p>Oliona came to Moscow with next to nothing when she was twenty and started as a stripper at one of the casinos, Golden Girls.</p><p>She danced well, which is how she met her sugar daddy.</p><p>Now she earns the basic Moscow mistress rate: the apartment, $4,000 a month, a car, and a weeklong holi- day in Turkey or Egypt twice a year.</p><p>In return the sugar daddy gets her supple and tanned body any time he wants, day or night, always rainbow happy, always ready to perform.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"You should see the eyes of the girls back home. They're deadly jealous," says Oliona. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"'Oh, so your accent's changed, you speak like a Muscovite now,' they say. Well, f**k them: that just makes me proud."</span></p><p>"Could you ever go back there?"</p><p>"Never. That would mean I'd failed. Gone back to mummy."</p><p>But her sugar daddy promised her a new car three months ago, and he still hasn't delivered; she's worried he's going off her.</p><p>"Everything you see in this flat is his; I don't own anything," says Oliona, peering at her own apartment as if it's just a stage set, as if it's someone else who lives there.</p><p>And the minute the sugar daddy gets bored with her, she's out. Back on the street with her nervous little dog and a dozen sequined dresses. So Oliona's looking for a new sugar daddy (they're not called "sugar daddies" here but "sponsors"). Thus the Gold Digger Academy, a sort of adult education.</p><p>"But how can you meet with others guys?" I ask. "Doesn't your present sponsor keep tabs on you?"</p><p>"Oh yeah, I have to be careful; he has one of his bodyguards check up on me. But he does it in a nice way; the bodyguard turns up with shopping. But I know he's checking there've been no guys here. He tries to be subtle. I think that's sweet. Other girls have it much worse. Cameras. Private eyes."</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Oliona's playing fields are a constellation of clubs and restaurants designed almost exclusively for the purpose of sponsors looking for girls and girls looking for sponsors. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The guys are known as "Forbeses" (as in </span><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">Forbes </em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">rich list); the girls as "tiolki," cattle. It's a buyer's market: there are dozens, no, hundreds, of "cattle" for every "Forbes."</span></p><p>We start the evening at Galeria. Opposite is a red-brick monastery leaning like an ocean liner in the snow.</p><p>Outside the restaurant black cars are quadruple parked up the narrow pavement and onto the boulevard; scowling, smoking bodyguards wait for their masters, who sit inside.</p><p>Galeria was created by Arkady Novikov: his restaurants are <em>the </em>place to go in Moscow (he also does the Kremlin's catering).</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Each restaurant has a new theme: the Middle East, Asia. Not so much imitative pastiche as knowing hints at someone else's style.</p><p>Galeria is a collage of quotations: columns, chrome black tables, panels with English paisley fabric.</p><p>The tables are lit up with cinema spotlights.</p><p>The seating plan is such that you can see people in other corners.</p><p>And the main subjects on display are women. They sit by the bar, careful to just order Voss water and thus provoke a Forbes to invite them for a drink.</p><p>"Ha, they're so naïve," says Oliona. "Everyone knows that trick by now."</p><p>She orders a cocktail and sushi: "I always pretend I don't need anything from a <span class="skimlinks-unlinked">man.That</span> gets them in."</p><p>At midnight Oliona heads for the latest club. Worming cavalcades of black (always black), bullet-proof Bentleys and Mercedeses move slowly toward the entrance. Near the door thousands of stilettos slide and shuffle on black ice, somehow always keeping their immaculate balance.</p><p>Oh nation of ballet dancers!</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Thousands of platinum-blonde manes brush against bare, perma-tanned backs moist with snow. The winter air is rent with cries from thousands of puffed up lips, begging to be let in. This is not about fashion, about cool; this is about work. Tonight is the one chance for the girls to dance and glance their way over the usually impossible barriers of money, private armies, security fences.</p><p>For one evening a week the most divided city in the northern hemisphere, where the mega-rich live fenced off in a separate, silky civilization, opens a little, narrow sluice into paradise. And the girls pile and push and crawl into that little sluice, knowing full well that it will be open for one night only before it shuts them back out in a mean Moscow.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Oliona walks lightly to the front of the line. She's on the VIP list. At the beginning of every year she pays the bouncer several thousand dollars to make sure she can always be let in, a necessary tax for her profession.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Inside, the club is built like a baroque theater, with a dance floor in the center and rows of loggias up the walls. </span></span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Forbeses sit in the darkened loggias (they pay tens of thousands for the pleasure), while Oliona and hundreds of other girls dance below, throwing practiced glances up at the loggias, hoping to be invited up.</span></span></p><p>The loggias are in darkness. The girls have no idea who exactly is sitting there; they're flirting with shadows.</p><p>"So many eighteen-year-old girls," says Oliona, "breathing down my neck." She's only twenty-two, but that's already near the end of a Moscow mistress's career.</p><p>"I know I'll have to start lowering my standards soon," she tells me, amused rather than appalled.</p><p>Now that Oliona has taken me into her confidence, I find that she's nothing like I thought she would be.</p><p>N<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">ot hard, but soft-drink bubbly.</span></p><p>Everything's just play with her. This must be the secret to her success: the room feels fizzier when she's there.</p><p>"Of course I'm still hoping for a real Forbes," she says, "but if the worst comes to the worst I'll settle for some millionaire dunce who's come up from the provinces, or one of those dull ex-pats. Or some vile old man."</p><p>But no one knows what a gold digger's future really holds; this is the first generation to have treated this sort of life as a career.
