Leveraging the Flipkart Group's supply chain infrastructure and tech capabilities, Grocery on Shopsy will cater to consumers across 700 cities, spanning over 5,800 pincodes. "Grocery is a key consumer need and we are committed to making e-grocery affordable for consumers and sellers alike. We have been working on reducing the cost of delivering groceries over the last few months. We are happy to announce that we have achieved best in class cost structure which makes us confident of scaling grocery on Shopsy," Prakash Sikaria, Senior Vice President - Growth, Flipkart said in a statement. Grocery on Shopsy will host over 6,000 products across 230 categories - ranging from staples, FMCG, and other dry groceries; matching the selection and range available on <keyword id="7658655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart-grocery" source="Orion">Flipkart Grocery</keyword>. With groceries on Shopsy, users can now shop for value groceries by adding and checking out products in their cart or by combining orders for multiple individuals in their network. Users can avail of a flat 5 per cent commission margin that will directly be credited to the linked bank account as well as enjoy up to 50 per cent savings, the company claims. Flipkart's Grocery fulfilment centres including centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna and Pune that will be leveraged by Shopsy, have fully digitised processes and product quality checks. These centres have implemented effective quality management systems to ensure the products are traceable from raw materials until they reach the consumer, without losing their freshness. Launched by Flipkart in July 2021 with the aim to make digital commerce accessible across India through a zero-commission marketplace. Shopsy has over 2.5 lakh sellers on the platform who provide 150 million products across 250+ categories and is on track to enable over 25 million online entrepreneurs by 2023. Flipkart's Shopsy launches e-grocery in 700 cities

FreshDirect's process of shipping highly customized grocery boxes straight to customers' doors cuts the grocery supply chain in half. And it all happens from this facility in the Bronx, the size of 11 football fields.Tim Knoll, Chief Operating Officer, FreshDirect: We're a super-high-velocity grocery store. So we're receiving lots of food every day. It's coming in, going right back out.Narrator: But getting a box like this delivered on time to the right door is a logistical nightmare.David McInerney, Co-Founder &amp; CEO, FreshDirect: When you think about millions of items that are coming in and going out of this building in a single week, there's a lot of complexity around that.Narrator: Normally, it takes a team of 3,200 people and a sophisticated AI system to get it all done. But by March, the company could barely keep up with a wild spike in orders.John Dozier, Delivery Driver, FreshDirect: In the pandemic, a lot of people are just kind of scared to go outside. We help eliminate the scariness.Narrator: We visited the FreshDirect facility in early September to see how the company manages on-time delivery in the face of pandemic demand.Knoll: Today is actually the busiest day we'll have had since January. So, as people return to school and people return back home from their vacations from the summer, they tend to stock up heavily.Narrator: FreshDirect began delivering groceries to New Yorkers back in 2002. At the time, the model was revolutionary. FreshDirect's supply chain is just three steps.McInerney: From the farm into our building directly to the consumer's house.Narrator: The new model cuts out three to four steps from the normal grocery-store supply chain. Customers can fill carts and order online or through the app. Just like a regular grocery store, FreshDirect sells everything from toothpaste and toilet paper to produce, fresh meats, and prepared meals.Scott Crawford, Chief Merchandising Officer, FreshDirect: If you think about a normal produce selection, you might find 200 or 300 different types of produces. We have anywhere from 400 to 600, depending on the time of the year.Knoll: About 65% of our product is what we consider fresh, be it meat, seafood, or deli or from our kitchen or fresh produces and cheeses and such.Narrator: Today, FreshDirect sources from over 100 partner farms across the world. All that food comes into FreshDirect's headquarters here in the Bronx.Knoll: Today we have about 120 trucks inbound.Narrator: Over a million pounds of produce come through the receiving area each week.Knoll: From Hepworth Farms, we're getting everything from these cherry tomatoes that you saw to these beefsteaks to these tomatillos.Crawford: This load of fresh berries will be in the building for less than 24 hours.Narrator: First, the incoming inventory is checked for quality and quantity and then put into the tracking system.Knoll: So, you can see he's printing out these labels, and that captured all that information on that barcode. And what happens from here is, we're actually directing the food to where it has to go. So in that system, it knows those tomatoes, what place they have to go within the warehouse.Narrator: Next, the new inventory is moved to all the appropriate fridges or storage areas. Pantry and shelf-stable goods are forklifted onto these giant inventory walls. Some goods are moved through this facility in as little as an hour and a half.Knoll: You can actually read the dates on those labels, and you'll see they're all about a week or less old. What's insane is the speed at which it moves.Narrator: Fresh produce ends up in temperature-controlled fridges. There are 38 different temperature zones throughout this facility.Knoll: For example, bananas, they like about 65 degrees. They like a certain amount of humidity.Narrator: A traditional grocery store is built with temperatures that make human shoppers happy.McInerney: You, as a consumer, could walk into a bricks-and-mortar grocery store in the middle of the summer in shorts and flip-flops and be totally comfortable. It's not good for the food because it detracts from the shelf life. There's no food on display here. All that food is tucked away, on ice, in the proper temperature, and is only taken out when it's needed. So we just have less waste as opposed to a bricks-and-mortar store.Narrator: FreshDirect says catering to a food's ideal climate extends its shelf life up to seven days beyond a traditional grocery store's.Knoll: We have a room that's at 55 degrees for things like tomatoes. We have a room at 45 degrees for things like onions and potatoes. They like colder temperatures.Narrator: There's a separate inventory room for meat and even fish.Knoll: This fish is probably two days out of the water, and it's here from Nova Scotia. So our fishermen, they actually go out, these are harpoon-caught swordfish.Crawford: 368 pounds.Worker: Yeah, it's fat.Narrator: The supply chain has such a tight turnaround that a customer could place an order for a fish in, say, Alaska, and within a day or two it'll be fished out and flown to this facility.McInerney: There are times where we could sell fish to a consumer five days out that's not actually landed in a boat yet.Narrator: Once all the items are inventoried, they don't sit around long before they're picked up and tugged to one of 12 kitchens. Fruits and veggies for precut packages are chopped in one room. Upstairs, the bakery starts buzzing in the early morning. Downstairs...Orlando Farino: We could do anywhere from 13,000 to 18,000 finished goods per day.Narrator: These chefs make more than 500 different prepared dishes. In the cold room, they're pulling together shrimp cocktails, ravioli, cheese boards, and salads. In the hot room, it's salmon, stews, chicken fingers, and one of the most popular items, rotisserie chicken. Down the hall, fish are filleted.Crawford: Yeah, Juvie actually also has some black cod right there, also known as butterfish or sablefish, out of British Columbia. Juvie, how many years cutting fish?Juvenal Ramirez: 28 years.Crawford: On a promo, he'll cut close to 1,000 pounds of fish a day.Narrator: And here, over 250 cuts of meat are butchered a day. They're sliced right as orders come in to help cut down on food waste. But when COVID-19 hit, meat orders spiked so much, the team had to lessen the variety of meat cuts until they could catch up with the demand.Lovando Belcher: We took a look at that volume and said, "OK, these are the steaks that we have the most volume on, these are the steaks that we're gonna feature."Narrator: Once workers finish preparing all the food, the real work begins: pulling all the items for an order together. The average order FreshDirect gets is about 30 items, which might not sound like a lot, but...McInerney: On a relatively busy week now, we're delivering to north of 100,000 houses, and if each of those houses has 30 items in their delivery, we're moving 3 million different food items out of, in essence, one mega facility.Narrator: Each order that comes in gets assigned a box. To make sure all 30 items end up in the right box, the company has been perfecting an AI system for nearly two decades. The system tracks when each item comes in and the expiration date. Then it finds the most efficient route along nine miles of conveyor belts to move the box to all the right pick stations. Each pick station has one worker and a selection of products the worker grabs from and places in the corresponding box. This picker has pantry goods and toiletries at her station.Knoll: So it tells her what item, she'll scan it, it'll verify it's the right item, she'll confirm that she put it in the customer's bag, and now it'll go to the next person. But you can see the speed with which she can pick these items. Rather than walking around a store all day, the work comes to her.Narrator: But it isn't set up like a normal grocery store, where all the, say, tomato sauces are together. To even out the workload, high-ticket items, like olive oil, are paired with lower-ticket items, like organic baby food, at one pick station.Knoll: We call it slotting the building. So the fewer stops that we make in our store with our totes as they go through, the more efficient we can be.Narrator: The goods are also grouped at pick stations based on affinity.Crawford: So, the people that would buy this tea have an affinity to buying other products that are here, such as Long Drink or the dry rosé cider.Narrator: After a worker picks the right item, they hit a green button, and the order box zooms off to the next station. After visiting sometimes dozens of pick stations, an order can finally be complete. It goes through one last check before being loaded on a FreshDirect truck.Crawford: So, as soon as the product gets here, our goal is to have it here less than two days and back out the door.Knoll: So there's literally thousands and thousands of bags that go to shipping every hour. On the outbound side, there's over 400 trucks going out with deliveries.Narrator: Those trucks run 2,000 routes each week.Dozier: We got a refrigerator in the back of the truck, so everything is already staying cold.Narrator: John's a 12-year veteran driver for FreshDirect. He typically does routes around New York City but sometimes takes deliveries all the way out to the Hamptons.Dozier: So, I start at 4:00, and coming from the Hamptons, I'm getting back at, like, 4:00, 4:30. So the traffic coming back is ridiculous.Narrator: The pandemic caused an 800% surge in new website traffic and increased demand for FreshDirect. But orders aren't just coming in from New Yorkers worried about leaving their apartments. A surprising amount of demand came from New Yorkers who fled to the suburbs.McInerney: That's been a new area of growth for us.Narrator: Even as demand spread out, FreshDirect's hub-and-spoke model allowed the company to quickly ramp up delivery to more coverage zones. FreshDirect expanded to New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester County, and Long Island. By the end of 2020, the company plans to add 1,000 new workers to match demand. FreshDirect's success is indicative of a larger trend in shopping habits. In 2019, <keyword id="1729596" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="E-grocers">e-grocers</keyword> held 3.4% of the grocery market. And in 2020, it's expected to hit 10.2%.McInerney: Here we are in September, looking at probably the biggest growth we've ever seen, and just each month it gets bigger. COVID-19 opened up the floodgates for online grocery. And I don't think we'll ever go back.

How FreshDirect delivers 100,000 grocery orders across NYC each week

As companies from <keyword id="10926" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance">Reliance</keyword> to Amazon put their top dollar in serving <keyword id="9999588" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="daily-grocery">daily grocery</keyword> at your doorstep, a new report said on Friday that online grocery is going to be the next battleground for growth, expanding to over $18 billion by 2024. According to a joint report by a joint initiative by Bengaluru-based <keyword id="9999587" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="market-consulting-firm-redseer">market consulting firm RedSeer</keyword> and <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">Bigbasket</keyword> (Brand Intelligence), driven by the significant rise in organic adoption during Covid-19, <keyword id="8289993" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="egrocery">eGrocery</keyword> has been on a surge with clocking 1.7 times in gross merchandise value (GMV) in June this year as compared to January. Online grocery will remain steady for the rest of the year to reach more than $3 billion, the report mentioned. "The industry has seen more than 70 per cent ARR (annual recurring revenue) jumps in the last quarter across categories. This brings the opportunity to serve a larger set of customers, and some challenges with it," said Hari Menon, co-founder and CEO of BigBasket. The report found that demand for comfort foods like noodles and cookies, immunity boosters like lemon and hygiene products like sanitizers picked up after the pandemic while essentials remained strong. Snacks and branded foods grew by 5 per cent quarterly pre-Covid, however growth jumped to 75 per cent in the June quarter. Within snacks and branded foods, biscuits and cookies was the largest sub-category and grew the most in Q2. Beverages grew by 2 per cent quarterly pre-Covid, however growth jumped to 50 per cent in Q2. "Personal Care grew by 5 per cert quarterly pre-Covid but jumped to 24 per cent in Q2 due to Covid. "We have observed that traditional brands which pivoted quickly to be digitally ready brands have seen 2x+ jump in sales compared to offline brands. We are excited to have this opportunity to serve the ecosystem," said Anil Kumar, founder and CEO of consulting firm RedSeer. Home utilities grew by 6 per cent quarterly pre-Covid but jumped to 11 per cent in Q2. Within home utilities, detergents and dishwash were the largest sub-category but grew the least in the last quarter. According to the report, home utilities were not severely affected by the pandemic. <ul><li><keyword id="1640900" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Online-grocery">Online grocery</keyword> segment will grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword>. </li><li>Today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India. </li><li>Startups in the online grocery sector have raised $665.70 million in funding in 2019 so far.</li></ul>The Indian online grocery segment is growing fast and how. Currently the online food and grocery retail holds a miniscule part of online retail with only 0.2% penetration. But it is predicted to grow by 55% to reach 1.2% of the market by 2023, said a report by RedSeer and BigBasket. The market size of this segment will also expand to $10.5 billion, the report predicts. The customers’ trust on online shopping along with the growing presence of e-grocery players will drive this growth in the sector, added the report. “The online grocery segment has been one of the fastest-growing e-commerce verticals in India and will continue to flourish in both metro and non-metro cities in the years to come,” said Hari Menon, Co-Founder and CEO, bigbasket. Online grocery vs E-commerce in India As Indians are used to visiting the kirana store in the next lane, online grocery has been growing slowly since onset in 2010. In the past few years however it picked up speed. As the number of e-commerce users grew it had a slow but steady effect on online grocery purchases. From a barely any presence in 2010, today online grocery startups account for 40% of total e-commerce funding in India.

<ul><li>The E-Commerce Festive Season ‘22 report by <keyword id="3359665" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="redseer" source="Orion">Redseer</keyword> found that the online gross merchandise value (<keyword id="6399113" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gmv" source="Orion">GMV</keyword>) grew 25% y-o-y during the festive month amounting to ₹76,000 crore. </li><li>About 64% of the transacting shoppers came from Tier 2+ cities. </li><li>Tier 2+ cities also contributed to more than half of the festive GMV. </li><li>E-grocery witnessed a 2x growth from last festive season. </li><li>Initially seeing a boost, mobile sales slowed down, while fashion, beauty and home appliances took the lead in sales. </li></ul>This festive season saw bumper sales online according to a Redseer report, which also said that about 64% of the transacting shoppers came from Tier 2+ cities. “Fashion leads category adoption in T2 cities, led by unbranded fashion, wherein one in every five orders had a kurti or saree in their cart. Within beauty, makeup was the most sought-after category with a lot of interest in looking and feeling good,” according to the E-Commerce Festive Season ‘22 report by Redseer Strategy Consultants. The report was measuring festival sales between September 22- October 23. It found that the online gross merchandise value (GMV) grew 25% y-o-y during the festive month amounting to ₹76,000 crore . And, Tier 2+ contributed to more than half of this GMV, at around 57%. “Democratisation of categories continued this year as well, with lower-order-value items growing faster than mobiles and electronics. While mobiles and electronics continue to dominate category share, home and kitchen, groceries and beauty personal care were the fastest growing categories. Grocery grew almost two times from the last festive season,” said <keyword id="210394" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sanjay-kothari" source="Orion">Sanjay Kothari</keyword>, associate partner, Redseer Strategy Consultants. Gifting and product upgradation big purchase drivers As per the RedSeer report, sales went up both online and offline during the festival month. “Simultaneous growth of online and offline revalidates the domestic consumption story and indicates ample growth opportunities for both formats,” revealed Redseer. RedSeer also said that there was growing maturity in the online <keyword id="6354851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail" source="Orion">retail</keyword> ecosystem. “Three in four sellers we surveyed reported at least 2X volume growth from BAU (business as usual) during sale days, with strong support from platforms in planning and executing the festive season well. This increase was more visible in lower ASP (average selling price) categories like fashion where 42% of the sellers reported a 3X to 5X growth from BAU,” said Kothari. Fashion sales remained strong as ever - driven by the need to dress up for festivals. Long-tail categories or lower-order-value items grew much faster than mobiles and electronics. Within long-tail categories, grocery contributed to 34% of growth while home &amp; kitchen (21%) and beauty and personal care (14%) were the other frontrunners. E-grocery witnessed a 2x growth from last festive season, as per the report. In home furnishing and décor, cushion covers, showpiece and decor accents contributed most to the growth. “From our consumer surveys, gifting emerged as a strong reason for purchase across categories and consumers reported an increase in the overall satisfaction with online platforms,” the report said. The local kirana store or India’s largest retail chain, all of them are keen on getting a piece of the <keyword id="1410674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-grocery-delivery" source="Orion">online grocery delivery</keyword> market. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Reliance Retail too stepped into this delivery business with its app, <keyword id="8506093" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jiomart" source="Orion">JioMart</keyword> with little success, though it has also invested in Dunzo. Time does matter When it comes to the delivery market, it’s not about what you deliver, how you deliver but it’s all about ‘when’ you deliver. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Only Jiomart, Bigbasket and DMart are scheduled e-grocery stores, all the other platforms are in a race of quick delivery business. And the segment seems to be ruled by the ‘10-30-minute delivery’ offered by platforms like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, Blinkit, Zepto and Dunzo. Most of the retail chains who intend to deliver groceries however have a one-day lag period between order and delivery. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. Online food ordering business is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/grocery-business-is-like-poison-pill-for-zomato-after-failing-miserably-two-times-as-per-analysts/articleshow/92202068.cms">aiding growth in the e-grocery as well</a>. Customers who order food online for convenience, wider selection, discounts and standardized customer support are also likely to be more amenable to ordering grocery items online for the very same reasons. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. JM Financial believes that quick delivery platforms have what it takes to disrupt the unorganized grocery market including neighbourhood kirana stores or even retail chains like DMart in large cities. The startup also claims to have built an indigenous “less-than-12 hours connectivity from farm to store” to keep perishable goods from getting spoilt during transport.
