Almost everyone seems to be having a relative, a friend, a colleague, a spouse, or even a child facing or has faced the ravages of the virus. And while the suffering itself is awful, the side effects and the weakness it causes post-recovery can bring down the healthiest. Most doctors say there are no major dietary restrictions for those suffering from or recovering from COVID-19, but there are certainly a whole lot of <keyword id="6403076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="recommendations">recommendations</keyword> that will help patients heal better and heal faster. Business Insider spoke to nutritionist Dr Rachita Ahuja, the co-founder of "The Diet Cell”, a venture that makes custom-made diet plans and provides diet consultation, to weigh in and share her nutritional recommendations. What, according to you, are the must-haves for those both suffering and recovering from the virus? Supplements: Doctors are recommending <keyword id="20923" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vitamin-C">vitamin C</keyword>, vitamin D, and zinc tablets, because we are not able to bridge the gap between good <keyword id="52652" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nutrition">nutrition</keyword> and the requirement. As a dietician, I would usually not advise supplements. Instead, I would tell my patients to have real food supplements, but not now. Now it is essential to rely on these supplements because they are concentrated and easily digestible. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can also be available in leafy vegetables or fruits, but given the symptoms like nausea and diarrhoea, consuming enough quantity that will fulfil your requirements may be challenging, so it is best to rely on supplements. Vitamin D is vital because many people are undergoing these 14 days of quarantine, leading to depression, which can be addressed by having vitamin D tablets. It is also a good way to build the body and immunity. Zinc is important because it helps in <keyword id="24300" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="protein">protein</keyword> synthesis and helps get back your smell and taste. Protein powder supplements are not really required because our diet is essentially rich in carbohydrates and protein. Micro minerals like vitamin D that are not easily available in our diets should be had, and the vitamins and minerals that are easily available in our diets can be omitted. Proteins: As the virus is multiplying and killing the healthy cells, we need to regenerate and regrow the cells. So protein is an essential part of these nutritional requirements. The richest source of protein for a vegetarian is perhaps dal, but then again, dal provides poor quality of protein; they are B-class proteins. So vegetarians can opt for quinoa, which is a very good protein source, and options like soya, kidney beans. Non-vegetarians can opt for eggs, which is a great source of protein, or poultry or fish. Seeds and sprouts: Are all very important during this period. Sprouts are a rich source of vitamin C. Pumpkin seeds are rich in protein and vitamin E. Fluids: Lemon water and electrolytes will help with nausea and diarrhoea. So it is important to have a lot of fluids. Ginger tea with honey is suitable for those with a wet cough. Solid raw turmeric boiled in the water and having throughout the day is also quite beneficial. However, those experiencing dry cough should avoid turmeric. Dairy: Milk and milk products are a great source of energy. Turmeric milk is also recommended. For those who are lactose intolerant, they can have almond, oats or soya milk. Probiotics: Since nausea and diarrhoea are common symptoms, concentrating on easily digestible food and good for gut health is essential. Things like yoghurt, greek yoghurt, probiotics will help the gut and are also easily accessible. Almond and other nuts: Are also recommended as they are a rich source of protein and vitamin E. Fresh vegetables and fruits are, of course, a staple. A balance in all of the above and the combinations of these is key. Q. What are some of the things that must be avoided? <keyword id="31653" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sugar">Sugar</keyword> and salt: Patients cannot have more than 5 grams of salt a day, which is also quite a bit. Sugar has to be minimised because these bacteria and viruses grow on the sugar part. So it's best to avoid too much sugar. To reduce salt intake, processed foods must be avoided as much as possible. Q. There are myths aplenty, what are some of the things one must not believe? That protein and carbohydrates should be avoided: As mentioned above, we need both to rebuild the cells. So protein is very much required, but yes, A-class proteins should be had, the ones you can digest -- like eggs, chicken, and fish. Carbohydrates are required for energy, so it is vital to have that too. If you give up on carbohydrates, the energy needed for the body is drawn from the protein, whose primary function is to help cell growth. So if the patient does not take enough carbohydrates, they will be tapping on proteins for energy, and the protein will not be able to help in cell growth. Also, it's a myth that yoghurt and tomatoes are not suitable for patients and that it may aggravate the symptoms. These are both rich sources of vitamin C. However, if the lungs are affected, cook the tomato and have curd at room temperature. New Delhi, Apr 21 () Having access to just the bare essentials in isolation is no longer doing the trick for those who shop online as they are now craving for luxuries like hair trimmers, board games and even automatic roti makers amid the ongoing lockdown, a new survey has revealed. The survey by e-commerce company Snapdeal noted that there has been a whopping "24 times" increase in the number of products being added to customers' shopping carts and wishlists, since the nationwide lockdown began on March 25."On average, buyers had nine items in their carts and wishlist," it said, adding that the price of these products range anything between Rs 68 to Rs 18,200. Unlike most online shopping portals that had temporarily stopped taking orders for non-essential items owing to the restrictions imposed during the lockdown, Snapdeal continued to receive and accept orders for all kinds of products, promising to ship them as soon as the restrictions are lifted.Four days after allowing e-commerce firms to also deliver non-essential items such as electronic goods and readymade garments, the government on April 19 said sale of non-essential items will continue to be prohibited during the lockdown period which last week got extended till May 3.Apparel, including t-shirts, bermuda shorts and lounge wear, accounted for nearly 40 per cent of the products being ordered, emerging as the clear favourite in the colossal non-essential category."Reflecting the current lifestyle of users, casual wear items like track pants and nightwear products including top and pyjama sets and nighties figured high on shopping lists. "Open sandals and flip flops priced between Rs 300 - 900 were another popular pick with buyers," said the survey.With salons and parlours shut, it is no surprise that "personal grooming products" are also high in demand at the time, followed closely by "household products".The survey noted that personal grooming products -- hair trimmer, epilator, beauty products and waxing strips -- were picked by over "80,000" customers, while household products saw an "80 per cent growth over usual demand trends". "Pressure cookers, roti makers, egg boilers, kitchen tools like multi-function scissors and automatic mops reflected the efforts on the parts of the users to manage their households with limited or no domestic help," the survey said.The current state of affairs have also given rise to a new category of products - work from home essentials, which have turned out to be a major attraction with customers.These range from headphones, laptop tables, home printers, and wi-fi routers to USB chargers, data cables, extension cords and back support pillows.Lockdown and the great Indian hankering for 'non-essentials' -- pyjama set, roti-maker, ludo and what not According to the survey, over "75 per cent" of the shopping lists were being generated by customers in non-metro cities, with Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh topping the charts."Bedsheets, towels, wall decorations, planting accessories and vegetable seeds for home gardens were other items in high demands. LED bulbs, emergency lights also figured high on the demand index," said the report, adding that "25 per cent" of customers were first-time buyers.School supplies -- notebooks, textbooks, stationery items -- and fitness products like weights, tummy trimmers, gym balls and smart bands too found themselves on the "most sold" list during the ongoing lockdown."Other popular items that India bought or added to their shopping carts include anti-snoring devices, spiritual books, stress-buster balls, indoor games like Ludo, Scrabble and Uno, soft toys, anti-clogging filters for kitchen sinks and musical instruments like guitars, flutes and mouth organs," the survey said. It was a glass jar filled with human feces."It's good to be reminded, in there could be over 200 trillion rotavirus particles, 20 billion Shigella bacteria, and 100,000 parasitic worm eggs," Gates told the crowd, which had gathered in Beijing, China for an event called the Reinvented Toilet Expo.The jar of poo was used to make a point: Around the world, in places without proper sanitation or sewage systems, there's much more than a jar's worth of unsanitary human waste sitting around. The initiative funded $200 million in grants for universities around the world to develop a next-generation toilet. Living without a good toilet can be unsafe. People who come in contact with fecal matter face a risk of deadly infections and chronic health problems, since human feces carry pathogens like E. coli, Streptococcus, hepatitis A and E, and more. The definitive answer, according to science</a>He estimates that illness from poor sanitation costs the world <a href="https://www.gatesnotes.com/Development/Reinvent-the-Toilet-Expo-speech" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over $223 billion per year</a> in lost wages and extra healthcare.With <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gates-foundation-ceo-sue-desmond-hellman-let-women-end-poverty-in-africa-2018-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stratospheric rates of population growth in cities across Africa and Asia</a>, the problem is only set to get worse. "Unless we do something, the cycle of disease will actually be accelerated," Gates said. Gates doesn't think it's practical to expect the entire world to connect their homes to yet-to-be-built sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants. That's why he has been on a quest to do for toilets what he argues Microsoft did for computing: get the business off a centralized, "mainframe" system.Gates started by asking engineers at universities around the world a simple but yet-unanswered question: "could you leapfrog the long-accepted 'gold standard' of sanitation?" "A decade ago, I didn't think I would be able to tell you so much about poop," Gates said.<h2>The first generation of sewer-free toilets is here, but they aren't cheap yet</h2>After seven years and $200 million of investment, the first batch of products from the "Reinvent the Toilet Challenge" is being tested in locations around India, Africa, and China. One of the first new toilets is the solar-powered Eco-san system, pictured below. The <a href="http://wusfnews.wusf.usf.edu/post/newgenerator-bringing-clean-water-and-energy-south-africa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of South Florida's NewGenerator</a> treatment system also runs on solar energy and can be hooked up to any existing toilet. It uses a nano-membrane filter (kind of like a coffee filter) with feces-digesting anaerobic bacteria inside to filter clean water out of the waste.Another toilet from <a href="https://www.cranfield.ac.uk/case-studies/research-case-studies/nano-membrane-toilet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cranfield University in the UK</a> comes equipped with a little trap door odor barrier and scraper so that it requires no water for flushing. Clean water is filtered out of waste via a large, orange screw in the tank, and solid waste is burned inside the toilet's combustor, which converts the waste into ash and energy. (Thankfully, this all happens out of sight of the people who are using the toilet.)"Heat from the burning is used to help dry the next batch of solids," as <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqcknE_Ic_g%20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gates explained in a video</a>. He added, "it's a very clever toilet." Yet another model, from Swiss engineering firm Helbling, is called the HTClean Toilet and it functions like a pressure cooker for poo. The immense pressure and heat helps the waste separate into water and solids that aren't toxic.<a href="https://pratt.duke.edu/about/news/coimbatore-sanitation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Duke University</a> has also started testing its Gates-funded toilet this year at a textile mill in Coimbatore, India. For now, the new toilets are going to be used at schools, apartment complexes, and community bathroom areas, Gates said.But his eventual goal is for off-grid toilets to be used in homes around the world. He told the crowd in Beijing that he's ready to spend an additional $200 million developing the technology for those next-generation toilets. But Gates hopes that someday, the private sector will start developing sewer-free home toilets, and compete to provide those toilets to the 4.5 billion people around the world who don't have them now. The small plants, one of which is already on the ground in Dakar, Senegal, can serve between 5,000 and 100,000 customers and are completely self-powered. They take in toilet waste, kill pathogens in the sewage, and convert it into "products with commercial value - like clean water, electricity, and fertilizer," Gates said.
