New Delhi, Jan 5 () Over 1.03 crore smart LED street lights have been installed till date, which led to an estimated energy savings of 6.97 billion kWh per year, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) on Sunday said.
These lights have been installed under the Street Light National Programme (SLNP), which is being implemented by state-owned EESL -- a joint venture of PSUs under the Power Ministry.
"Under the SLNP programme, over 1.03 crore smart LED streetlights have been installed till date, enabling an estimated energy savings of 6.97 billion kWh per year with an avoided peak demand of 1,161 MW," EESL said in a statement.
LED street lights have been installed in various states across the country, helping generate approximately 13,000 jobs to support government's Make in India initiative.
Through the government's zero subsidy Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) initiative, over 36.13 crore LED bulbs have been distributed across India. 
This has resulted in estimated energy savings of 46.92 billion kWh per year, avoided peak demand of 9,394 MW.
"Five years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the energy efficiency revolution in India by launching UJALA &amp; Street Lighting National Programme. EESL installs over 1.03 cr smart LED street lights in country so far

<keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword>, the online marketplace headquartered in New Delhi, has tied up with state-run <keyword id="1877338" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Energy-Efficiency-Services-Ltd">Energy Efficiency Services Ltd</keyword> (<keyword id="6354918" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="EESL">EESL</keyword>) to sell LED bulbs at Rs 99 per unit. This is a part of EESL implementing the Centre's <keyword id="2835385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Efficient-Lighting-Programme">Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme</keyword> (<keyword id="2677500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="DELP">DELP</keyword>). 
 
"Under the campaign, Snapdeal will be selling LED bulbs at Rs 99 and enable the Ministry of Power to increase distribution of LED bulbs through its online marketplace to its customers spread across over 5,000 towns and cities of India," said the statement issued by Snapdeal. 
 
This partnership would enable the government to increase its distribution reach for LED bulbs, so that the cause of the DELP programme to promote efficient lighting can be strengthened and awareness on using LED to reduce electricity bill can be enhanced, thereby increasing the efficiency in domestic energy consumption. 
 
"Snapdeal is proud to be chosen as a partner by the Power Ministry to support its DELP programme. With our unmatched reach in metros as well as tier 2 and beyond, and our huge customer base, we will be able to support the Government achieve its target of replacing incandescent bulbs with LEDs," said Rahul Taneja, Vice President, Category Management, Snapdeal. 
 
Saurabh Kumar, MD, EESL said, "Our goal is to reach out to as many people to realise the goal of an energy efficient India. Our partnership with Snapdeal is an attempt in this direction." 
 
"In today's time, e-commerce is a platform for maximising reach and I am hopeful that this partnership will make the programme more accessible to the people and drive it across the country," Kumar added. 
 
As per DELP, the government aims at replacing all the 77 crore incandescent bulbs sold in India with LED bulbs, which would result in the reduction of 20,000 MW load, and save energy of 105 billion KWh and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions while savings 80 million tonnes every year. This would save Rs 40,000 crore in electricity bills, considering an average tariff of Rs 4 per kWh.

Snapdeal joins hands with EESL; would sell LED bulbs for Rs 99

In a bid to promote <keyword id="83221" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Energy-efficiency">energy efficiency</keyword>, the federal as well as Uttar Pradesh Government in association with Energy Efficiency Services (EESL) have decided to distribute 13 lakh <keyword id="777411" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="LED-bulbs">LED bulbs</keyword> to 2,28,496 consumers and replace 36,077 conventional streetlights with LEDs in Varanasi. 
 
India’s Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal launched domestic efficient lighting programme and LED-based Smart Street Light programmes in Varanasi, constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 
 
The Centre plans to cut down energy usage by 10,000 MW during peak hours by promoting LED lights across the nation. 
 
“With energy-efficient LED lights, demand of electricity in Varanasi will be down by 45 MW and lead to savings to the tune of Rs 68 crore,” informed Goyal. 
 
Meanwhile, Minister of Energy in Uttar Pradesh, Yassir Shah, said that there would be considerable savings on the street lights as well as in the domestic sector in due course. “This should help ensure 24x7 supply to every household," said Shah. 
 
EESL will replace the conventional street lights with LED at its own cost and over the span of five to seven years, municipalities will use part of the savings in energy and maintenance cost to repay EESL. 
 
Goyal had earlier stated that the government planned to fast-track rollout of LED bulbs which will result in reduction of 27,000 MW peak load.

LED bulbs to replace over 36,000 conventional streetlights in Varanasi

Thanks to a government-sponsored LED distribution programme, almost 90% of all households in AP and Puducherry have replaced incandescent bulbs with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LED+lamps">LED lamps</a>. That means the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=electricity+bills">electricity bills</a> of every household have reduced by up to Rs 200 a month. 
 Under the <keyword id="2835385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Efficient-Lighting-Programme">Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme</keyword> that was launched across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh in January, over two crore <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LED+bulbs">LED bulbs</a> have been distributed in these states and the project's ambition to reduce power consumption, and it seems to have worked! 
 
A whopping 68 lakh KWs of energy is saved every day. This includes a cut in 645 MWs of power during peak hours, a 5,520-tonne drop in daily <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=carbon+emission">carbon emission</a> and domestic savings of Rs 2.71 crore every day. 
 
According to EESL, an incandescent bulb consumer 60 watts of power to emit 350-400 lumen of light (unit of light) while CFLs with its hazardous mercury coating emit 450-550 lumen of light on 14-16 watts. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LED">LED</a>s emit a whopping 600-700 lumen, consuming just 6 watts of power and saving 90% more energy than regular bulbs. They also have a life of 15,000-20,000 hours. 
 
Seems like there is no reason why India shouldn’t use more of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=LED">LED</a> lamps!

This is how LED bulb help India save Rs 2.71 Crores
every day

With an aim to reduce power consumption, increase domestic savings and cut down carbon emission, the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> had recently initiated the LED distribution programme. The program, primarily, demands the replacement of incandescent bulbs and CFLs with <keyword id="3100995" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="energy-efficient-LED-lamps">energy-efficient LED lamps</keyword>. 
 This pilot project, which was introduced in <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> in April 2014, was extended to other states – Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh – in January this year. 
 After distributing over two crore LED bulbs, the <keyword id="126373" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Power">Ministry of Power</keyword> has now acknowledged the positive result it has started receiving from the initiative. 
 Saurabh Kumar, managing director of <keyword id="1877338" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Energy-Efficiency-Services-Ltd">Energy Efficiency Services Ltd</keyword> (EESL), a PSU under the pPower Ministry, says, "Today, almost 90% of all households in AP and Puducherryhave replaced incandescent bulbs with LED lamps and the electricity bills of a household have reduced by up to Rs 200 every month." 
 
This project is helping the government to save 68 lakhkilowatts of energy every day. Wondering how? Well, this includes a cut in 645 megawatts of power during peak hours, a 5,520-tonne drop in daily carbon emission and domestic savings of Rs 2.71 crore every day, reported The Economic Times. 
 
Quoting another purpose of the project, Kumar says, "The purpose of this project is to replace 77 crore regular bulbs and 40 crore CFLs (bought by Indians every year) with more energy efficient LED lamps." 
 
He further adds that the poor will also be able to make significant savings as the government is providing these LED lamps at a very lower price. Financed by the consumers themselves, the project is run under two major parts – on bill EMI and direct purchase. 
 
1. Under the first model, the user will have to pay Rs 105 for one LED bulb across 10 months, which is added to the monthly power bill. 
 
2. The second plan allows the consumer to buy bulbs in one go — every consumer is entitled for four LED bulbs — by paying Rs 100 apiece. Notably, all the bulbs come with a three-year replacement warranty.
