Universities and <keyword id="20257650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education-institutions" source="keywords">higher education institutions</keyword> in India can now admit students twice a year similar to the admission process followed by universities abroad, according to the <keyword id="19932585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-Grants-Commission" source="keywords">University Grants Commission</keyword> (UGC) Chairman Jagadeesh Kumar. The two admission cycles will be July-August and January-February from the 2024-25 academic session. "If <keyword id="21269142" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-universities" source="keywords">Indian universities</keyword> can offer admission twice a year, it will benefit many students. Such as those who missed admission to a university in the July/August session due to a delay in the announcement of board results, health issues, or personal reasons. Biannual university admissions will help students maintain motivation since they do not have to wait one full year to be admitted if they miss admission in the current cycle," UGC Chairman Kumar said on Tuesday. Currently, UGC Regulations allow the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to admit students in one academic session in a year starting in July/August. An 'Academic session' is twelve months, beginning in July/August. Indian HEIs, therefore, follow the academic session that begins in July-August and ends in May-June. UGC had decided in its 571st commission held on 25 July 2023 to permit <keyword id="22014108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="biannual-admissions" source="keywords">biannual admissions</keyword> under Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online modes in January and July during an academic year. As per the information furnished by the HEIs on the UGC DEB portal, in addition to a total of 19,73,056 students were enrolled in July 2022 and an additional 4,28,854 students joined in January 2023 in ODL and online programs. Considering the tremendous response and interest from the students in ODL and online programs in biannual admissions, in its meeting held on May 15 this year the UGC took a policy decision to allow Higher Education Institutions who offer programs in regular mode to admit students twice in a year, either in January/February or July/August from the coming academic year, the UGC chairman said. Those institutions that have the required infrastructure and teaching faculty can utilize the opportunity to admit students biannually. Offering biannual admissions is not mandatory for the HEIs; it is the flexibility that UGC provides to the HEIs who want to increase their student intake and offer new programmes in emerging areas. To be able to admit students twice a year, HEIs must make suitable amendments to their institutional regulations. UGC Chairman Kumar said, "With biannual admissions in place, Industries can also do their <keyword id="22014800" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="campus-recruitment" source="keywords">campus recruitment</keyword> twice a year, improving employment opportunities for the graduates." Biannual admissions will also enable the HEIs to plan their resource distribution, such as faculty, labs, classrooms and support services, more efficiently, resulting in a better functional flow within the university, he said. Noting that Universities worldwide already follow a biannual admission system, he said that if Indian institutions adopt the biannual admission cycle, they can enhance their international collaborations and student exchanges. "As a result, our global competitiveness will improve, and we will align with the global educational standards," the UGC Chairman said. Biannual admissions can substantially increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio and make India a 'Global Study Destination' as envisioned in National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, he said. Further, Kumar said that if HEIs adopt biannual admissions, they need to work on administrative intricacies, good planning for increased use of available resources, and providing seamless support systems for the smooth transition of students admitted at dissimilar times of the year. Universities in India can now admit students twice a year on lines of foreign varsities: UGC chairman

Gen Z isn't sure higher education is worth it — and it might be taking a toll on Harvard

Over 600 of the survey respondents were Gen Zers. One question in the survey asked "Looking ahead to the next five years, which of the following are important goals to you?" People could choose more than one answer if they wanted to.Forty-three percent of Gen Zers said traveling was an important goal, and just 39% of Gen Zers said advancing their education was.Those shares are both below the 72% of Gen Zers who said being financially stable is an important goal. Gen Zers were also more likely to rate financial stability as an important goal than older generations. That comes at a time when <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-consumer-price-index-november-economic-outlook-fed-interest-rate-2023-12">inflation</a> is still pretty high.Additionally, some Gen Zers <a target="_blank" href="https://freddiemac.gcs-web.com/news-releases/news-release-details/freddie-mac-new-survey-shows-gen-z-apprehensive-about-path">think home ownership might not be feasible</a>. Still, a third of Gen Zers in the survey said owning or renovating a home was an important goal. Almost a third listed becoming debt-free.A Bank of America survey also indicated that 85% of Gen Z see a barrier or barriers to <a target="_blank" href="https://newsroom.bankofamerica.com/content/newsroom/press-releases/2023/10/gen-z-is-tightening-its-belt--with-73--modifying-lifestyles-due-.html">financial success</a>. For instance, 40% of Gen X included traveling as an important goal compared to 10% who said advancing their education.But Gen Xers may be later in their life and know that getting another degree or working toward a master's degree isn't something they hope to do in the next few years. They may rather take what they have earned and put it toward a vacation and other travels.Gen Zers may also not feel they need to advance their schooling. The <keyword id="56459" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-grants-commission" source="Orion">University Grants Commission</keyword> (UGC) has also reiterated that none of these degrees will be valid and cautioned students against taking admission in such courses. "It has been observed that many <keyword id="505101" type="General" weightage="60" keywordseo="Higher-Education-Institutions" source="Orion">Higher Education Institutions</keyword> (HEIs) and colleges have entered into collaborative agreements with foreign-based educational institutions or providers not recognised by the commission and have been facilitating the issuance of foreign degrees to the students," UGC Secretary <keyword id="722170" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="manish-joshi" source="Orion">Manish Joshi</keyword> said. "Any such kind of collaboration or arrangement is not recognised by the UGC and, accordingly, the degrees issued subsequent to such collaboration arrangement are also not recognised by the commission," he added. Generations of kids were raised on its tech. </li><li>Chromebooks now fill the void for several reasons, columnist Michael Gartenberg says.</li></ul>Long before music was part of Apple's DNA and computers were something to be strapped to one's face, Apple was the de facto standard for K-12 education. An entire generation grew up trying to get through the "Oregon Trail" series or learning to type with the help of Mavis Beacon. Today, Apple logos shine brightly in universities around the world but it's all but gone from K-12 classrooms.Apple's share of the K-12 education market has been <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-pcs-gain-share-in-k-12-in-the-u-s-but-chromebooks-still-dominate/">under siege since at least 2017</a>, when low-cost Windows computers and Google's affordable Chromebooks with its suite of cloud apps, began to own the market. These days, Chromebooks dominate in schools, according to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://canalys.com/newsroom/global-tablet-market-share-Q2-2023">market-research firm Canalys</a>.I talked to several school principals and superintendents who told me that Google's support for collaboration and Chromebooks' multiuser capabilities make it the clear choice for institutions that are already under budget constraints.<div type="image" title="apple ipad what's a computer" height="1208" width="1933" msid="102619079" hostid="261" sizebytes="49330"></div><h2>Why the iPad isn't winning with K-12 schools</h2>Apple once worked hard to position the iPad as its offering for education. (Remember the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfR_Jj4grZE">2017 "What's a computer?" commercial </a>where a school-aged kid spends the day, including doing homework, on the iPad? Or the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.ispot.tv/ad/bn9U/apple-ipad-air-election-song-by-sparks">"Your next computer is not a computer"</a> ad where two high schoolers use their iPads to compete for class president?)But as one principal of a relatively affluent private school pointed out to me, the cost of an iPad — along with a Magic Keyboard (cover folio keyboards did not meet their needs), plus an Apple pencil — was the equivalent of at least three comparable Chromebooks that could be used by more than one student. Chromebooks are also much easier to repair or replace and log back in. There's no need for the complex restore process that Apple uses, particularly for iOS devices.One of Apple's biggest pushes to make the iPad the standard device used in K-12 schools was back in 2013 when the Los Angeles school system signed a contract to purchase $1 billion worth of devices. I worked at Apple at the time, and that contract was viewed as a huge win and was expected to be the first of many deals that would propel iPads into classrooms across the country. Unfortunately, it didn't quite turn out that way.The initial $30 million contract was expected to expand to about $500 million as the project rolled out over the following year. An additional $500 million was to be used to expand internet access and other infrastructure issues at schools. Costs rose quickly as the need for peripherals such as keyboards became apparent, and critics noted that the iPad model the district agreed to buy was already superseded by newer, more capable devices sold at retail stores.That <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-controversial-plan-to-give-ipads-to-la-public-school-students-failed-2014-10">LA contract is something that Apple never talks about</a> anymore and shows that even if iPads were appropriate for this market, Apple might not be equipped with the proper sales and support teams to deliver large-scale projects. Lately, the schools and districts I've seen using iPads as part of their curriculum are mostly small-scale projects or grassroots organizations.<div type="image" title="Bring on college, Apple website ad" height="1222" width="2220" msid="102619084" hostid="261" sizebytes="57124"></div><h2>Why schools love Google Chromebooks</h2>Apple's somewhat confusing product line is part of the problem. Is the iPad really a computer suited for productivity, as Apple often claims? Or do the iMac and MacBook belong in the classroom? These are questions Apple hasn't successfully answered at the basic consumer level, even at a time when both <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/10/apples-mac-shipments-fall-more-than-40percent-worse-than-major-rivals-idc.html">Mac</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/320193/000032019323000077/aapl-20230701.htm">iPad</a> sales are declining.Schools are looking for devices and services that are low-cost, specifically designed for education, support premium features such as pens, are well-constructed, and have a long battery life. They're not looking <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-vision-pro-3499-price-reveal-prompts-groans-sighs-laughter-2023-6">at $3,400 spatial-computing devices</a>. (When I mentioned Apple's new virtual reality <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/no-good-reason-to-buy-apple-ar-rvision-pro-2023-6">Vision Pro device to one teacher,</a> she said they need devices that will help kids with science projects, not buy science projects from Apple.)Chromebooks' affordability, classroom-specific features, and compatibility with Google's suite of educational tools make them an ideal choice for institutions looking for a device that can meet the specific needs of the classroom.But maybe more importantly, Google now owns the K-12 market because Apple appears to be uninterested in it. It's back-to-school season now and Apple's homepage has the message "Save on Mac or iPad for College" splashed across it.Economics aside — although there's quite a lot of money to be made in this area — the unique relationship Apple once had with students went beyond the cost of the devices in the school. The Apple II wasn't just the classroom computer, it was also the home computer. The Mac was the PC kids took with them to college and later to the business world. The individual relationship Apple had with students from the time they were old enough to use a computer created brand loyalty from day one, which created customers for life.As the education market evolves, I expect Chromebooks will continue to command an outsize market share and become even more widely adopted by schools and districts. They aren't as flashy as the latest devices from Cupertino, but in the case of the classroom at least, utility beats cachet. The US has recorded more than 71,000 fatalities and over 12 lakh COVID-19 cases -- both highest in the world.Schools and colleges across New York will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year. As New York begins to develop plans to reopen schools and colleges around September for the new academic session, the state and the Gates Foundation will consider what education should look like in the future."It's not about just reopening schools. When we reopen schools, let's open a better school and let's open a smarter education system," Cuomo said at his daily coronavirus briefing on Tuesday.He said the state will be working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on this project. "The last few months have been an incredibly stressful time full of change, but we have to learn and grow from this situation and make sure we build our systems back better than they were before," Cuomo said. "One of the areas we can really learn from is education because the old model of our education system where everyone sits in a classroom is not going to work in the new normal. When we do reopen our schools let's reimagine them for the future," he said. The project will also look at using technology to meet educational needs of students with disabilities, providing educators more tools to use technology and given ongoing socially distancing rules, how can classroom technology can be deployed, like immersive cloud virtual classrooms learning, to recreate larger class or lecture hall environments in different locations.The state will bring together a group of leaders to answer these questions in collaboration with the Gates Foundation, who will support New York State by helping bring together national and international experts, as well as provide expert advice as needed.Earlier this month, Cuomo had announced that schools and colleges in the state will remain closed for the rest of the academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will continue to provide distance learning to students during that time, a decision that will impact nearly 4.2 million students statewide.
