The concept of online learning though new for Indians picked up pace rapidly during the pandemic owing to its features of accessibility and affordability. With the endemic now in sight, the blended learning scenario is very much looking like the norm, thereby establishing ed-tech as an essential part of our lives going forward. The onset of the pandemic was a watershed moment for the <keyword id="12086661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="edtech-industry" source="Orion">EdTech industry</keyword>.When the pandemic struck, people were forced to work remotely. Several players mushroomed and almost overnight offered everything from e-learning tools to financing to high school management and many more niche solutions. According to the RBSA report, India received $2Bn investments in EdTech in 2020 alone, the highest in the last five years. With more emphasis on technology, corporates are inking partnerships with Edtech players for skilling and upskilling their employees to match global standards. They also sense the necessity of developing holistic learning to further attract investments and propel growth. This has now kick-started early consolidation in this sector, which will soon become a trendsetter. Today, an EdTech company has to establish and drive itself as a ‘Brand’. It has to be capable of generating awareness and offering credibility in its services and offerings. An e-lesson in branding is to live to tell the tale amid cutthroat competition.This has become essential to drive consideration amongst the TG in a super cluttered market. Precisely the reason why the marketing teams have had to work harder than ever to carve a niche for their own brands. Some adopted a wait and watch approach while many went digital in the last year..But a few were able to hold their fort with innovative features and a 360 degree integrated approach, which is the need of the current hour. For every brand and marketing enthusiast, Covid has caused a tectonic shift making it more exciting and challenging than ever to find new ways and optimally utilise communication channels to stay ahead of the curve. It also disrupted the traditional season/quarter-led marketing campaigns with Unlock taking centre stage for all activities. At the end of it all brands have learned and the current stint has only made marketeers tougher and more adaptable. The lessons learnt will only help brands in this space to either revisit or efficiently plan their way forward. Invest in brand building Education was never a brand but a reputation and heritage oriented space. From the famous Doon school to IIMs, these institutions have won admiration because of the learning culture they have cultivated. While this stands true for traditional institutions, the internet demands a completely different niche. Branding in the Edtech space becomes increasingly important because the consumer doesn’t have a tangible offline connection with you. From the colour of your logo to your narrative, build a consistent equity that consumers can recognize easily. This early investment and attention to details will set you apart. While building your brand, ensure that your creative articulation is true to your product deliverables. With the adoption barrier for ed-tech gone, consumers now are looking at quality and differentiated offerings and this is where a brand will help garner attention and eventually build trust. Understand Your Target Audience A thorough understanding of the end target audience is a must in the education space. To simplify, for a working professional most decisions are taken by them sans any need to consult parents but they are likely to rely on customer feedback or word of mouth before signing up for a program. However, they are the end decision makers and winning their confidence is important for the brand. On the other hand, for brands catering to children and young learners (K-12 audience), consumers and customers are different. The parents are customers and the children are consumers. A constant challenge here will remain to appeal to the students and win the trust of their parents. Often parents see services while kids look at the fun,engaging aspect of the product. And hence as a marketeer one needs to coin communication that appeals to both audiences. To ensure a foolproof campaign make note of your TG and address their specific need. Go beyond the Integrated Marketing jargon The most overused term doing rounds in the marketing vertical is ‘Integrated Marketing.’ Largely, it implies a mix of traditional, digital, OOH &amp; digital mediums to create enough buzz for consumers. Edtech is a largely sensitive space and overburdening your customers with thoughtless marketing will do more harm than good. Right at the beginning, plan the needs and objectives of your campaign. Are you launching a new product or introducing a new feature? Are you tackling pressing issues? Or simply creating a brand recall? In any case, go beyond a rote advertisement plan and rather find means to demonstrate the product to the consumer through strategy. Plan in advance to ensure that the campaign is released simultaneously and be meticulous about the choice of mediums. Any out of the box idea that makes the consumer aware and in a way engage with your product or feature directly will always cut the cake especially when you want to drive differentiation. Moment marketing if done right gets an organic positive buzz for the brand in the digital space at hardly any cost. Marketing as a function has to be flexible enough to adapt to any external or internal changes. In the harshest of times, marketing teams have been known to create revolutionary campaigns or come up with thought provoking ideas opening a pathway for others to follow. By the looks of it, Covid may seem like a daunting challenge for companies but in reality it has unlocked more possibilities of staying connected with the end consumer making the best use of online and offline mediums. AWS &amp; Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology CCMB is also using AWS cloud computing services to manage its work. The core focus of this collaboration is to accelerate the growth of genome sequencing research projects. According to reports the progress is significant with the reduction of research analysis by 98%. AWS &amp; AI In a collaboration with ConveGenius AWS has also developed a chatbot dubbed the SwiftChat. IAMAI establishes India EdTech Consortium to uphold Code of Conduct by  EdTech Platforms

<ul><li><keyword id="3554713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="upskilling" source="Orion">Upskilling</keyword> is not about learning some new skills or tools, it is about how to use them to solve problems more efficiently. </li><li>If you feel that the prospects of the job are not good and there are chances of <keyword id="6357067" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="layoffs" source="Orion">layoffs</keyword> going ahead, then it makes sense to look around. </li><li>Just as you invest in your fitness and entertainment on a regular basis, you have to invest in keeping yourself up-to-date.</li></ul>Over the past few months, news of layoffs, especially by large tech companies have made headlines. And very recently, with the arrival of ChatGPT, it seems that AI is closer than ever in taking over our jobs. In such a dynamic environment, staying agile and constantly upskilling oneself is the new normal. Mohan Lakhamraju, CEO &amp; founder, Great Learning, shares his views with Business Insider India, on how one can navigate one’s career path. Great Learning is an edtech company for professional and higher education offering programs in blended, classroom, and purely online modes across technology, data and business domains. To cut costs, employers may want to replace high-paying jobs with low-paying ones. How do people at the middle levels stay relevant in their careers? How important is upskilling in this regard? This is not something that is a new trend. This happens routinely in several industries. Many companies, particularly IT and consulting firms, have very flat pyramids which means that the number of positions at senior levels are much smaller than those at junior levels. So not everyone will be able to reach those senior levels, and they will have to leave and get replaced by those who are younger and whose compensation is lesser. It is possible that in the last four to five years, when money was flowing freely, and it was cheap, there were more people than necessary in senior ranks, but that is being trimmed right now. For those who are now at the middle levels, if they move into another job and the only competency they have is to manage other people, then it is not going to be as appealing. Instead, if they can bring in new ways of solving problems, bring in efficiency, and can use technological solutions to improve the value proposition to their customers, then it becomes much more compelling. And that is where upskilling becomes important. Upskilling is a word that is used very broadly, but it is not about learning some new skills or tools, it is about how to use them to solve problems more efficiently. If you go with these kinds of skills, then you will be much more attractive to potential employers. People move from one job role to another. How should that be planned? Earlier jobs were not as specialised as they are now. Increasingly jobs are getting more and more specialised, because for all kinds of jobs, we are using technology. And when we use technology, things tend to get more specialised. The solutions that are emerging, the tools that you are using to do various jobs, the data that is being viewed and reviewed and used to make decisions, are actually increasing over the last decade. You have much less generalist jobs anymore. As things are getting more specialised, you cannot move from one role to the other without having the required competence for that job. Let us say you are doing product management. Today product management has many tools and technologies, and much specialised domain knowledge. If you want to shift in your role from an engineer to a product manager, and you do not have those skills, then it is a very hard transition to make and nobody is going to give you that job. In that situation, doing a course or a program teaches you all of those things, and gives you some practice in using those, and teaches you the language or the vocabulary that is used in the new job role. It also lets you do some projects and overall makes you familiar with what happens in that job role and equips you much better to make that transition. Similarly, if you want to make a shift from doing operations to marketing, both these have a separate set of tools, technologies and processes. If you want to do that without having that competence, nobody is going to give you that job. That is why upskilling becomes very important. Layoffs are in the news now, especially in tech. What can employees do in such a situation in case they feel that their jobs are at risk? I am not an advocate of career cushioning. If you are putting one foot in the door and one outside the door, then you are never going to be able to commit properly to your existing job and earn the trust of the people you are working with. There may be special situations when you are seeing the writing on the wall, when you are seeing the issues a company is facing, and you think that your future in the company is limited. Then it makes sense for you to look for something that is in your self-interest and that is what you should be doing. People have been doing that always, it is nothing new, just that there is now a word for it. I believe if people have chosen a job and they like what they are doing, then they need to commit to it for a minimum period of time of at least a few years, because they can do something meaningful and impactful. I strongly discourage people from jumping around from jobs every few months. If the environment that you are in is not good and you are not being able to do meaningful work, then it makes sense for you to look out for something else. But if the environment is good, then you should put your head down and do something for a reasonable amount of time so that there is a clear value add that you have done, or a clear contribution you have made and a clear set of skills and experience you have gained. And if you are continuing to learn and grow, continue there, there is nothing special or unique to be gained from just jumping around. In fact, there is a statistic that says that 80% of people who changed jobs during the great resignation regret their decision and some 60-65% of them have apparently tried to get back to their previous job. Only if the environment is not good, it makes sense to look out. Also, if you feel that prospects of the business are not good and then there are chances of layoff going ahead, then also it makes sense to look around and engage in what is being called as career cushioning. When laid off, or when one wants to make a move, how does one make themselves more employable? If you have a good idea of what you want to do, you have the knowhow of the processes and problems that are associated with the job and you can produce any kind of body of work - projects that you have done in your own time, projects that you have done as a part of a structured learning experience, any courses you have done that have given you practice, all of those things are very powerful signals that this is something that you are really interesting in doing. It also shows that this is something where you have put in the effort to get familiar with and you can actually engage with it. Then it makes it much easier for your employer to make a bet on you. Only at the entry level can one be hired based on talent and attitude, but once you are senior, everybody will want to know what you can bring to the table. There is a fear that AI will take over many jobs. How does one secure their job in such a scenario? Are there some jobs that are more susceptible to being taken over by AI? If you think about the present moment and what has come about through tools like ChatGPT, we all knew that such a moment was about to come, it was only a matter of time. We all knew that AI was going to get better and so we should not be surprised. Now, the table stakes have increased, meaning that any job that was just a mundane process that involved data manipulating, where one was just looking and following the workflow, all such jobs have got automated or are getting automated at a very rapid pace. That has already been happening, which we call robotic process automation. Now, it is not just numbers and workflows that are getting automated, it is things that are more language-oriented, things that involve writing and some amount of conceptual knowledge. In all of those things, AI has gotten good enough to match human-level quality. What that means is that you need to be able to do better than AI. The bar has been raised. Whether you are a content writer, whether you are a marketing ad copywriter, or whether you are a journalist writing articles, what AI can now do is the bare minimum. However, AI does not know what is right or wrong. So you need to be able to use these technologies and have enough knowledge, judgment, and awareness of your area that you are able to validate whether what it is saying is correct or wrong and where it is making mistakes. Second, you should be able to use what AI is doing as the base case and see how you can improve beyond that. And third, now that AI is saving time, how can you utilize the time and add more value. You have to be able to do all those things if you want to stay relevant. I think a lot of people in professions like marketing and content writing are under threat right now. They should use AI as a tool that is available and see how they can perform better using such tools. The same applies to people who are in academics. Even teachers have to change how they assess their students, for example, they cannot ask a student to write a paragraph on a certain subject as ChatGPT can do it better than most students. However, ChatGPT can never understand the requirements of your clients or of your internal stakeholders. So that is the role you can play, that is translating what the stakeholders want into something that the machine can produce a solution to, by acting as the interface between the client/ stakeholder and what the machine can do. That is the role that people have to play now. What are some of the other key macroeconomic job trends one should be aware of and how should they adapt themselves to those? In the entire history of humans, whenever new technologies came, there were fears that people would be out of jobs and machines were going to take over. Exactly similar concerns were there when automobiles were invented. So many people were dependent on horses, they were worried about losing their jobs. Similarly, when locomotives were invented, when manufacturing started getting industrialized, or when computers came, or the Internet came, or analytics came, these concerns came up. But in each of these times, the nature of roles changed, and how humans added value changed. Yes, some roles did get eliminated, but new roles got created, new jobs got created, and people adapted. Today, the phase of that change is getting compressed. What earlier happened over a 20-year period, is now happening in a two to three-year period. We have to be more agile, but now all the tools that one needs to be more agile are now there. People have to be comfortable with the idea that they need to reskill and <keyword id="3736601" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="upskill" source="Orion">upskill</keyword> over the course of their career, many many times, and that is the new normal. Just like you go and get your health checkups done, just as you invest in your fitness on a regular basis, or invest in entertainment platforms, you have to invest in keeping yourself up-to-date. You just have to embrace that. You should always think about the things that you know and how you can leverage that. Think of the new role or position that can take advantage of what you already know and what new you can bring to the table. For example, if you have a background in marketing, now you learn how to apply that in the digital domain. Look at the strengths that you have and learn new things that you can take to the next role. If what you have does not add much value at all, then you have to invest in a more involved learning experience.

As the government begins to take steps to fix <keyword id="1464841" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="edtech" source="Orion">edtech</keyword> platforms like <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s, several parents have shared their plight on social media and professional networking platforms as representatives from online education providers continue to force them to buy courses. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs recently pulled up edtech firms during a meeting with them and self-regulatory organisation India Edtech Consortium (<keyword id="306435" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iec" source="Orion">IEC</keyword>) amid aggressive misselling of courses to parents. "Hey BYJU'S and <keyword id="8080458" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="whitehat-jr" source="Orion">WhiteHat Jr</keyword>... Trust me I am pushing my daughter to start learning coding, and do IIT JEE preparations with you guys, but she is just not willing to do so. Kids these days don't listen to their parents. She just wants to be an artist. So, please stop calling me to sell these plans/devices," Prashant <keyword id="445" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sharma" source="Orion">Sharma</keyword>, who is into business development and a consultant with a penchant for storytelling, posted on LinkedIn. His post led to a barrage of similar situation being faced by parents all over the country, who are fed by constant aggressive selling of courses by the edtech representatives. <keyword id="14487485" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="srikant-ganesh" source="Orion">Srikant Ganesh</keyword>, Vice President at Dentsu Creative India, posted that he can totally relate to Sharma's experience. "My 9 year old son's into chess, plays the keyboard and is into speed-cubing and has no inclination towards computers / coding as such. I believe BYJU's and WhiteHat's of the world realise that there's more to kids these days than just learning to code and yes! They have a mind of their own and no one can push them into something they are not inclined towards. This false sense of FOMO being created by such brands should stop and so should the calls," Ganesh lamented. After the Centre took serious note of mis-selling of courses to parents by edtech firms, self-regulatory organisation IEC said it is committed to protecting consumer interest and has resolved 100 per cent complaints received till June. However, fresh complaints surfaced on social media platforms this month, indicating that the problem has not been addressed in totality. "This happened to me. The sales representatives of #Byju's need to be trained to handle a 'No'. I have personally experienced this when a representative called my wife and she said that we don't want to enroll. He kept calling and then I had to intervene. He kept insisting that your child had been registered on their site, so how could we say No! He didn't seem to understand and finally I had to explain to him by activating my desi side. I registered my complaint on their site but it was removed the next day," posted Dheeraj Grover, Senior Manager, HR, at VVDN Technologies. Thangarathnavel M., Head of Business Development-South Asia at German company Covestro, said on LinkedIn that he could fully relate to it too. "I had enrolled my son 2 years back but it was not much of any use. Few months back I started receiving calls from them again to enrol my son for the physical classes. But even after saying no, the calls never stopped. Once I gave a piece of my mind to one of the callers and asked him to share the mobile number of Mr. BYJU. Now the calls have stopped coming. Hope they stop this forever," he described his plight. Earlier this month, the Centre warned edtech companies against unfair trade practices. In a meeting with the IEC, Consumer Affairs Secretary, Rohit <keyword id="255172" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="kumar-singh" source="Orion">Kumar Singh</keyword>, said that if self-regulation does not curb unfair trade practices, then stringent guidelines would be formulated for ensuring transparency. The meeting was attended by representatives of the IAMAI, along with IEC member companies including upGrad, BYJU'S, Unacademy, Vedantu, Great Learning, WhiteHat Jr, and Sunstone. During the meeting, issues pertaining to unfair trade practices and misleading advertisements for the Indian edtech sector figured prominently. It found that 89% of these either monitored or could monitor kids' online habits and usage, sometimes without parental knowledge or consent.The platforms were all endorsed by various governments to help kids move to online learning during the pandemic, HRW said. But the apps harvested information on kids' identities, the identities of their friends and family, where they're located, what they're learning in the classroom, and what kinds of devices they're using, informing online profiles that could then be used to target ads at them."In their rush to connect children to virtual classrooms, few governments checked whether the <keyword id="14046661" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="edtech" source="Orion">EdTech</keyword> they were rapidly endorsing or procuring for schools were safe for children," the report says."As a result, children whose families were able to afford access to the internet and connected devices, or who made hard sacrifices in order to do so, were exposed to the privacy practices of the EdTech products they were told or required to use during COVID-19 school closures," the report wrote.The researchers conducted their review between March to August last year, HRW wrote. They focused mostly on apps running on Google's Android operating system, as it's the most popular mobile operating system in the world, the report wrote. Android commanded a global market share of almost 70% in January, <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/272698/global-market-share-held-by-mobile-operating-systems-since-2009/">according</a> to Statista data.One way the apps track the data is through collecting advertising IDs, per the report. These allow advertisers to see what kinds of apps a person has installed on their phones, the authors said, allowing advertisers to push targeted messages. It found that children had their advertising IDs sent to Google-owned and Facebook-owned domains.Google and Facebook's parent, Meta, did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comments. A Google spokesperson <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/05/24/remote-school-app-tracking-privacy/">told</a> The Washington Post the company was investigating claims made in the report, and will respond accordingly if there were violations. A Meta spokesperson told the outlet the company restricted how children were being targeted in advertising. HRW's report comes on the heels of the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2022/05/ftc-crack-down-companies-illegally-surveil-children-learning-online">warning</a> last week to education technology companies. Remote-learning apps used by kids during the pandemic monitored and shared their data for ads, analysis finds

Bengaluru, July 14 (IANS) Bengaluru-based edtech platform Unacademy on Tuesday announced that it has led a strategic investment of $5 million (approximately Rs 37.7 crore) to acquire a majority stake in Mastree, a leading K12 learning platform. Started in October 2019, Mastree recognised the gaps in foundational learning and the challenging transition to middle school for both students and parents. Founded by Shrey Goyal and Royal Jain, the company's mission is to help bridge this gap by strengthening the foundation and inspiring students to achieve excellence. Mastree is building a one-stop subscription product for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) courses, for classes 5-8, which will include Live Classes in small groups for mathematics, science, public speaking, creative writing, Vedic mathematics, and others. Along with Live Classes, students can also utilise various features like doubt solving, unlimited personalised practice, Live quizzes, etc. "Unacademy and Mastree have a shared vision, and together we want to create an impact and make quality education accessible and affordable," Gaurav Munjal, Co-Founder and CEO, Unacademy, said in a statement. "Mastree is building a highly impactful subscription product, and it will change the way students learn. We are very happy to have Mastree as part of the Unacademy Group." Here is the catch – while universities and colleges are catching up, it’s not as fast as the demand growth. The growth in green job postings is around 15% in the last one year, says LinkedIn. Naukri pegs it as high as 27% with the EV sector being the star. “According to the Global Green Skills Report 2023 by LinkedIn, India has seen a 140% jump in auto industry workers with Electric Vehicle(EV) skills from 2018-23. Krishnan says that the rapid industrial expansion outpaces curriculum updates in colleges, resulting in a shortage of skilled talent. Most of the expertise that’s needed to drive India’s green transformation requires strong foundational STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills. “Currently, the key qualifications needed for such (green) roles would be an engineering degree with 5-10 years’ experience within the sustainability sector and experience of sustainability certification schemes,” says Ghatpande. In fact, most of the jobs require engineering degrees — both standalone or specialised to environment science. “The common degrees are Environmental Science or Engineering for roles in environmental conservation and management. Renewable Energy Engineering or Sustainable Energy Studies for careers in the renewable energy sector. Agricultural Science or Sustainable Agriculture for those interested in sustainable farming practices,” says Jaideep P Kewalramani, head of employability business and COO, TeamLease EdTech. Green certifications in vogue On top of the basic degrees, there are certifications as well. Green Building Certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for sustainable construction and architecture. Certifications in Environmental Management like ISO 14001, for professionals focusing on sustainability within organisations. For now, organisations which quickly need a lot of employees with green skills are developing talent by upskilling and reskilling the existing workforce on green technologies. “Also there is an active collaboration with academia in curating programs to create talent pipelines,” says Kumar. Added to that several online learning platforms offer tailored certificate courses and modules to help professionals kickstart their careers in the EV industry. “These courses often feature industry-relevant curricula, real-world projects, live mentorship by experts, and expert-led masterclasses,” says Krishnan. India is steadfast in its commitment to go green. As such jobs explode, it’s up to the professionals and young aspirants to build their green skills to move towards a sustainable career ahead. India’s green jobs are growing but are colleges ready to supply the talent?

<ul><li>The <keyword id="11924074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank-india" source="Orion">Shark Tank India</keyword> judge says gatekeepers of the app ecosystem – Apple and <keyword id="19902762" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google" source="keywords">Google</keyword> – are the new East India Company and they operate with complete arrogance and impunity.</li><li>Just as startup founders are coming under pressure, venture capitalists and auditors too need to be held accountable for their behaviour.</li><li><keyword id="20225195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shark-tank" source="keywords">Shark Tank</keyword> India has become a catalyst for driving entrepreneurship and giving it legitimacy. </li></ul> <keyword id="127971" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="anupam-mittal" source="Orion">Anupam Mittal</keyword> is India’s original internet entrepreneur, who is the founder and CEO of People Group. Way before platform economy became a buzzword, Mittal built a platform for Indians seeking life partners. And even today one million Indians find their partners on shaadi.com every year. Call him the OG of startups or a serial entrepreneur, he is a man who does not mince words. In a free wheeling chat with Business Insider’s Malini Bhupta, Mittal talks about unfair trade practices of Google, his investment in Ola’s Bhavish Aggarwal and what he thinks is the biggest achievement of Shark Tank India. Edited Excerpts: With some high profile startups like Paytm and Byju’s coming under lens, what do you think is wrong with the startup ecosystem? I think the Paytm issue is a little different. There are two issues there in my view – one is valuation. The company came out with its IPO at the height of the unicorn boom and as a result, their valuation was corrected when the pvt. market corrected. This is part of the pricing game and one can hardly blame them for it. Eventually, they would have grown into their valuation is what I believe. However, the second issue which is regulatory in nature is far more serious. Whether it is justified or not I don’t know. I think there is a little heavy-handedness here as what you are talking about is a payments bank KYC stuff being the reason to shut them down, which could be seen as over-reach since they are not a significantly important lending institution. Talking about what is wrong with India’s ecosystem and why founders are behaving badly is a common issue that occurs when there are high levels of greed. When there is massive liquidity in the system people think they can take advantage of the situation. In the US you have seen Theranos, crypto frauds and an industry that was created around SPACs. Billions of dollars have been lost on that. What is happening in India is a small reflection of that. Greed manifests in two ways – one is the founders who are ambitious who see the ecosystem celebrating unicorns and that gets weaponised. Over time a few start with minor refractions and very soon they start fabricating revenues and manipulating auditors to keep up with the image that has been created. They are riding tigers they can't get off. The venture capitalists too want to see their investments being marked up as their future fund raises depend on the portfolio's net asset value and so they play along and at times actually drive the founders at a velocity that is unsustainable. I think they need to be held accountable by their LPs. Auditors have a very important role here and are perhaps the ones who need to pay the highest price through government censures. They are market participants who have been entrusted with a certain job for which they get paid hefty fees. When they start looking the other way, the system breaks. You have been waging a pitched battle against the unfair trade practices of Big Tech companies in India. What, in your view, are the steps that need to be taken by the government to prevent such unfair practices by large global players? Fundamentally the experience of the internet is through apps – two companies control the entire app ecosystem Google and Apple. Both operate with complete impunity. Two years ago the CCI passed an order against Google around <keyword id="963171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-play" source="Orion">Google Play</keyword> Billing System (GPBS). Now they have changed the name to User Choice Billing. If you look at the order CCI says there will be no discrimination at all. Being on the App Store means nothing unless you advertise on Play Store. Startups spend anywhere between 10-50% of revenue on advertising on these platforms already. Essentially, the app store is worth nothing if you don’t have content. What choice does a company have but to adhere to their unfair practices… Now they say that any transaction that happens on apps downloaded via the store will be subject to 15-30% tax/commissions. What this means is that they want 50% of the revenues of the startups. It is the new East India Company and they operate with complete arrogance and impunity. The problem is in getting these companies to comply. Their strategy is to stretch out the legal process and tire the system. Our government and regulators have the right intent but sometimes democracies are messy. As a government, we have to ensure that nobody becomes the gatekeeper to our economy which is what these companies are trying to do. There should be penal provisions for anybody who abuses the law or twists and turns it while violating the very spirit of it. Non-compliance with judicial orders is contempt of court and so there is an opportunity to send a very strong message. These bullies need one arm chopped off in the form of penalties, a rap on the knuckles will not work as they are too big to care about a couple of hundred million in penalties. What is the biggest achievement of Shark Tank, which has now become a huge hit in India? In life timing is everything. Shark Tank’s first season was in December 2021, which was the peak of the startup hype cycle, and it demystified the whole conversation around startups and funding. Shark Tank has become a catalyst for driving entrepreneurship and giving it legitimacy. India is a land of entrepreneurs with every second person running some small business, many from home. A decade ago, if you told someone you are an entrepreneur, you would be told to come back when you get serious. The show has played an amazing role in celebrating entrepreneurship and the startup ecosystem. A lot of companies have done very well. About 8-10 companies that got funded in Shark Tank are doing very well out of 180 companies that came to the show. This is an early stage game and will play out the same way. When you invest in 100 early stage companies, 4-5 will do very well and help recover the investments and some will become very big. A majority will fail. What I found amazing was that the companies that came to the show were not the elites who came from IIT or IIM. These are small businesses founded by housewives and family members. Entrepreneurship is not the reserve of the few. The next decade will be defined by Indian entrepreneurs globally and so there is no better time to be an entrepreneur than now. Shark Tank has put belief in every Indian that they can do it and that changes the game. Many of the founders that come to Shark Tank can do even better than the founders who have come from an IIT or an IIM. I believe that these people understand commerce and ‘dhandha’. The elitist founders are used to being served everything on a platter. Many professionals who come out of large companies or consulting firms cannot start without large funding. Out of the 100 unicorns we have, many will spectacularly fail in 2024 as they were built on the wrong foundations. These companies were built on a template of Ivy League founders and old school networks and so they got funded. Of the businesses that come to Shark Tank, what sectors can do well and stand a better chance of being funded? Indians now have the same aspirations as people in other parts of the world. Anybody who comes in and can bridge the gap between aspiration and affordability will do well especially in lifestyle. For example - Companies in the clothing and jewellery space will do well if they can deliver high aspiration at a value pricing. Last year a company called Snitch came with a revenue of Rs 60 crore and is now doing Rs 250 crore in sales. A company called Skippy, which makes ice pops was funded on Shark Tank too and has a run rate of Rs 50 crore from a few lakhs before ST. I funded a company called Sharmaji Ka Atta which has a revenue run rate of Rs 20 lakh a month in less than 12 months from less than 1 lakh. Another one called Whatsapp Wellness just got funded by HUL. Fundamentally, companies that can build premium products but don’t break the bank on affordability in categories like fashion, lifestyle and food will do well. People read labels now and the young generation is focused on what they are eating. Beauty and wellness products will do well as a secular trend for most of our history Lakme meant beauty, that’s how unbranded we were. Shaadi.com is not an arranged marriage platform. Shaadi.com is a planned marriage platform. Indian culture has four stages of life and marriage is one of the life stages. When you are planning to marry you look for compatibility and it is not about a chemical reaction. On Shaadi.com the family and parents collaborate to find a partner. The old community networks are now dying and we replace those networks. We are bringing together people in the same life stage to find a like-minded partner. The hook-up sites don’t do that and don't understand the Indian ethos. They are applying the same global model to India which does not work beyond a certain point. You were the original internet entrepreneur with a disruptive product. Why did you not create a large business that went on to become a decacorn or a unicorn? It depends on how you define success. If the definition is labels such as decacorn and unicorn, then that's not the game we are playing. Those are vanity labels that I would rather not pursue. Our definition of success is value creation and we are long-term compounders, much like Berkshire &amp; LVMH, so in a sense our ‘overnight’ success story is still waiting to become obvious to the world. From that lens, our ROCE is perhaps the best in the industry we have only ever raised about $20 mn but created several billion in value between our operated and invested cos. Our investee companies employ thousands, have raised over $20 bn and will go on to create $100 bn in value over time, in the bargain generating tremendous wealth for the country and hopefully for us too. We boast an IRR of 52% consistently for more than a decade which is extraordinary by any standards and a testament to our approach and story. Many people build businesses but we were fortunate to create entire industries such as online matchmaking via Shaadi.com, which we still run; proptech company Makaan.com which we sold to NewsCorp very handsomely; India’s first &amp; still the largest digital ad agency, Interactive Avenues, which we sold to IPG at a benchmark price that is yet to be crossed; India’s first mobile gaming company, Mauj Mobile which spawned a massive industry. So, whether it is our customers, employees, shareholders, the country or society at large, I think we have already impacted 10s of millions and while we don’t have a market listed entity like Jio or TCS to show for it, we have delivered massive national and global level impact. Keep in mind that we are most often the first to check into investee cost and every company we have founded has been the first in its industry. Our innovations have generated billions of dollars in wealth and given rise to innumerable founders and entrepreneurs who have learnt at our companies and gone on to build massive companies of their own. Further, I am still very young and the Indian opportunity is only now unfolding. It is perhaps one of the most spectacular untold stories of value creation in the digital economy. Ola is one company that is headed for an IPO and you own 2% in the company. How did that happen? When we invested in Ola, there was not much of a concept of venture funding and the company did not have any suitors so we were able to get in at a very attractive valuation and hold an extremely healthy minority stake which obviously has been diluted over time. I think the network effects are so large that it is hard for others to get into it. I am still a shareholder and looking forward to the initial public offering. I invested in 2012 and when I met Bhavish first, I did not understand the problem he was solving as I live in Mumbai where cabs are available. So I did not think there was a problem. A few days later when I was in Delhi and needed a cab, I was told that they would call a taxi stand. After I came back from Delhi, I realised there was a problem everywhere. And I used to call the call centre and Bhavish used to answer the call centre, which showed me his commitment and reminded me of myself when I had started and so I invested.

Many <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-radically-reshape-job-market-global-economy-employee-labor-innovation-2023-8">knowledge-worker occupations</a> could be impacted, including those in marketing and sales, software engineering, research and development, accounting, financial advising, and writing roles.Even workers in the jobs that remain could eventually become vulnerable. While this landscape could <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-chatgpt-at-work-job-save-time-ai-2023-2">bring opportunities</a> for workers who learn to use new technologies, those who struggle to adapt could be replaced not by AI — but by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-wont-take-your-job-someone-who-uses-it-might-2023-5">fellow humans who know how to use it</a>."AI won't take your job. It's somebody using AI that will take your job," economist <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-wont-take-your-job-someone-who-uses-it-might-2023-5">Richard Baldwin</a> said earlier this year.Both scenarios point to a growing need for retraining — or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sc/how-a-reskilling-program-helps-keep-top-employees">reskilling</a> — workers impacted by the coming AI boom. This includes training displaced workers for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/job-disruption-ai-future-careers-blue-collar-desk-work-2023-11">jobs less impacted by AI</a> and giving others the skills they need to work in one of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-ai-will-not-take-jobs-create-future-work-opportunities-2023-2">millions of new jobs</a> that could be created <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-artificial-intelligence-job-replacement-worries-losses-microsoft-excel-atms-2023-10">due to these technologies</a>. It also means helping workers develop AI skills in their current roles so they don't get left behind."Over the long term, labor disruptions could herald an unprecedented demand for reskilling displaced workers and require a significant increase in capacity for retraining," Seth Carpenter, Global Chief Economist for Morgan Stanley, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.morganstanley.com/ideas/generative-ai-future-of-work">said</a> in a note in early November. Retraining and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-will-government-help-during-recession-unemployment-checks-parents-biden-2022-12">government safety net programs</a> like unemployment insurance he added, are more likely to help displaced workers than policies like a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deepmind-founder-universal-basic-income-needed-ai-job-losses-2023-5">universal basic income</a> — which some have posed as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-universal-basic-income-physical-work-choice-2021-8">solution to AI job displacement</a>.But even if retraining is the solution, executing this transition is easier said than done. The US has seen job displacement before, and the aftermath hasn't always been pretty.<h2>Retraining workers in certain age groups and industries can help the US avoid the mistakes of the past</h2>In the early 2000s, expanded global trade led to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/made-in-america-products-more-expensive-2022-12">cheaper products</a> for American consumers. But this contributed to the loss of as many as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epi.org/publication/botched-policy-responses-to-globalization/#:~:text=From%201998%20to%202021%2C%20the,European%20Union%2C%20and%20other%20countries.">five million</a> US manufacturing jobs and the subsequent economic hardships faced by many communities — particularly smaller <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-manufacturing-factories-save-america-economy-future-crappy-service-jobs-2022-7">cities and towns in the Midwest</a>.When Donald Trump promised to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/there-is-a-huge-hole-in-trumps-promise-to-bring-back-us-manufacturing-jobs-2017-3">bring back manufacturing jobs</a> before the 2016 election, he was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/counties-exposed-to-trade-voted-for-trump-in-the-republican-primaries-2016-7">speaking to the Americans</a> who had been left in the lurch."The mismanaged integration of the United States into the global economy has devastated US manufacturing workers and their communities," the Economic Policy Institute <a target="_blank" href="https://www.epi.org/publication/botched-policy-responses-to-globalization/#:~:text=From%201998%20to%202021%2C%20the,period%20(1998%20to%202019).">wrote</a> last year, referring to the wave of globalization between 1998 and 2021.Efforts to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/made-in-america-companies-bringing-manufacturing-back-to-us-2022-7">bring supply chains closer to home</a> have led to a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-is-experiencing-factory-boom-but-finding-workers-is-difficult-2023-7">manufacturing uptick</a> in the US in recent years. But many overseas jobs aren't likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/22/business/economy/coronavirus-globalization-jobs-supply-chain-china.html">return</a> anytime soon, among the reasons job retraining was — and remains — necessary for impacted workers.If and when AI poses a new disruption to many Americans' jobs, avoiding the mistakes of the past will require <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jobs-at-risk-from-ai-replace-change-chatgpt-automation-study-2023-7">significant retraining investments</a> by US companies, schools, and governments, Michael Chui, a partner at the McKinsey Global Institute who has researched the impact of new technologies on businesses, previously told Insider.In the "glass-half-full" scenario, Chui said, retraining could help many workers transition to higher-paying jobs. While the US has far from a perfect track record in navigating economic disruptions, he said he had confidence the US could make the transition."There was a time when a vast majority of the workers in the United States were involved in agriculture," he said. "And then years later, far more people were working in factories, for instance. But we didn't end up with 50% unemployment. We have historically been able to do this."Young workers, who are more likely to have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ai-can-help-gen-z-succeed-workplace-2023-7">experimented with technologies like ChatGPT</a>, may have an easier time adapting to the AI future — but extra retraining resources may be needed for older workers. When telephone operators, for instance — then a common profession for women — were automated in the late 19th century, older workers struggled most, Ethan Mollick, an associate professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rise-of-ai-artificial-intelligence-how-to-prepare-history-productivity-2023-7">told Insider</a>."When you got rid of operators, then basically young women were able to adjust, find new jobs and were able to adapt," he said. "But older women took a lifelong hit to wages — were never able to find as good a job again."<h2>Companies, schools, and governments have a role to play in retraining</h2>On a practical level, retraining can happen in a few different ways: at colleges and universities, through independent programs, or within companies themselves. But it's not yet clear who will be — and should be — responsible for executing the needed training.Some companies have already taken steps to ensure their workers keep up with AI.The accounting and consulting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers, for instance, has plans to provide <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pwc-training-workers-ai-usage-quickly-2023-9">AI training for 75,000 workers</a> in the US and Mexico. The training is designed to teach employees about new technologies and how they can safely incorporate them into their work. In an IBM <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ibm.com/thought-leadership/institute-business-value/en-us/report/augmented-workforce">survey</a> of 300 global corporate executives conducted in May, the executives estimated that 40% of their respective workforces would need reskilling over the next three years due to the implementation of AI and automation.It's not just about helping workers keep their jobs. Given AI's potential to help businesses <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/artifical-intelligence-could-boost-sp-500-profits-goldman-sachs-2023-5">increase productivity and boost profits</a>, there's arguably plenty of reason for them to invest in AI training.Some college professors, like UPenn's Mollick, have encouraged their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wharton-mba-professor-requires-students-to-use-chatgpt-ai-cheating-2023-1">students to use AI like ChatGPT</a> in some of their studies. In addition to directing funding toward retraining programs, Congress could also <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jec.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/democrats/issue-briefs?id=48D820DF-15B9-4EB7-952D-DF93E12B296C">adopt tax policies</a> that encourage companies to retrain their workers — rather than replace them."It is true that some workers will need support and retraining as we make this transition into an AI-powered workplace," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-gates-comments-about-ai-risks-workers-will-need-retraining-2023-7">Bill Gates</a> wrote in a July blog post. "That's a role for governments and businesses, and they'll need to manage it well so that workers aren't left behind."

AI is going to force millions of workers to train for new jobs. The US has historically been terrible at this.

Edtech platform <keyword id="2900267" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="byju" source="Orion">BYJU</keyword>'s on Monday said that the company has received funds from 11 out of 13 investors in a Rs 3,600 crore funding round which started in June last year. New York-based Oxshott in September 2021 invested Rs 1,200 crore as part of the Series F round at Rs 285,072 per share, which is yet to arrive. "Additionally, Oxshott wasn't leading the round. In fact, they were one of the last investors to come in for that round. Out of the total Rs 3,600 crore, Rs 2,400 crore has already come in," a company spokesperson told IANS. Other investors in the round were Edelweiss (Rs 344.9 crore), IIFL (Rs 110 crore), Verition Multi-Strategy Master Fund (Rs 147 crore), and XN Exponent Holdings (Rs 150 crore). The Morning Context first reported that "money from <keyword id="14428557" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oxshott-capital-partners" source="Orion">Oxshott Capital Partners</keyword> or related entities for an investment has not reached the company". Oxshott <keyword id="14428559" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="venture-fund-x-llc" source="Orion">Venture Fund X LLC</keyword> and <keyword id="14428558" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="drd-holdings-sarl" source="Orion">DRD Holdings SARL</keyword> are both investment vehicles of <keyword id="14428556" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oxshott-capital" source="Orion">Oxshott Capital</keyword>. It is common industry practice for investment funds to establish separate investment vehicles for compliance/internal structuring purposes to deploy investments. In the current case, the investor has requested that their investment be deployed through DRD Holdings SARL (instead of Oxshott Venture Fund X LLC). The fresh development came after another report recently claimed that some money in the Rs 6,300 crore private equity investment that BYJU's announced early this year has also not arrived. In March, BYJU'S had announced to raise about Rs 6,300 crore (around $800 million) from Sumeru Ventures, Vitruvian Partners, and BlackRock. <keyword id="1702989" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="byju-raveendran" source="Orion">Byju Raveendran</keyword>, Founder and CEO, was also part of the funding round and made a personal investment of $400 million. According to reports, the money from Sumeru Ventures "hasn't come in and questions are being raised about the fund's antecedents". However, BYJU'S said most of the funds have been received and the rest were on track. The company said that "its fundraising efforts are on track and majority of the $800 million has been already received". "The balance is also expected soon," a company spokesperson had told IANS. Meanwhile, the edtech giant said recently it has closed the nearly $1 billion acquisition of offline test preparatory services provider <keyword id="6380190" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="aakash" source="Orion">Aakash</keyword>. The company, in a statement, said last week that its payments to Aakash are "closed" and the "audited financial results are going to be announced in the next 10 days". BYJU'S has also been in the news for laying off employees and disgruntled parents complaining about poor quality of learning material and sales pitches by agents. Late last month, BYJU's announced to cut nearly 600 jobs -- 300 employees at its Toppr learning platform and another 300 at coding platform WhiteHat Jr. "In order to reduce redundancies across our organisation after multiple acquisitions, we had to let go of nearly one per cent of our 50,000+ strong workforce," said a company spokesperson. BYJU'S also lost a case in a consumer court, where a Bengaluru man sued the company in a consumer court for providing low-quality tablets and study material to his son and daughter who were promised <keyword id="10591" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="samsung" source="Orion">Samsung</keyword> tablets worth Rs 25,000. Further, the edtech major also backed out of its promise to convert the tuition fee of Rs 99,000 into EMIs. When the company did not pay heed to his demand of cancelling the subscription and refunding, he filed a case and won a refund of the fee of Rs 99,000 and a compensation of Rs 30,000, according to reports.
