This year's figure is an 18.6% increase from 2021 and 41.5% jump from 2016, thanks to rising childcare, transportation, and food costs. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-kids-cost-raising-child-inflation-childcare-tax-exemptions-2024-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">More on how that figure was calculated here</a>. </p><p>But starting a family won't just put a dent in your wallet. The hidden cost of having children

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="63528" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prince-Philip">Prince Philip</keyword>, who died Friday at the age of 99, was a decorated WWII combat veteran.</li><li>He earned a valor award for lighting up enemy ships in a nighttime battle, helping the British achieve victory.</li><li>He is also credited with helping save his ship from an enemy bomber in a battle two years later.</li></ul><p>Prince Philip, <a href="https://www.insider.com/prince-philip-dead-2021-3">who died on Friday at the age of 99</a>, was a decorated <keyword id="6357515" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="World-War-II">World War II</keyword> veteran who fought in a number of battles during the global conflict, including one brutal exchange near Greece in the dead of night.</p><p>Allied forces delivered a devastating blow to the Italian navy at Cape Matapan just off Greece on March 28, 1941, sinking several enemy vessels in quick succession.</p><p>British <keyword id="201426" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Royal-Navy">Royal Navy</keyword> warships closed with Italian ships in the dark, catching the enemy force off guard. It was the kind of close-range gun battle that naval radar advancements would make less common. Philip, who was then a 19-year-old midshipman aboard the battleship HMS Valiant, was manning the searchlights to find enemy ships.</p><p>"I seem to remember that I reported that I had a target in sight, and was ordered to 'open shutter'. The beam lit up a stationary cruiser, but we were so close by then that the beam only lit up half the ship," <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/philip-how-i-sunk-italian-cruisers">Philip recalled in the forward of the 2012 history book <em>Dark Seas: The Battle of Cape Matapan</em></a>.</p><p>"At this point all hell broke loose," he said. "All our eight 15-inch guns started firing at the stationary cruiser, which disappeared in an explosion and a cloud of smoke."</p><p>"I was then ordered to 'train left' and lit up another Italian cruiser, which was given the same treatment," he said.</p><p>During the nighttime fight, British warships sank three cruisers and two destroyers, some in a matter of minutes. The Italians lost more than 2,000 sailors. <a href="https://www.history.co.uk/article/prince-philip-and-the-invasion-of-sicily">One account from the battle said</a> that "thousands of bodies were strung over fifteen miles of sea off Cape Matapan."</p><p>For his actions during the fight, Philip was awarded the Greek War Cross, a military decoration for heroism.</p><div type="image" title="British Royal Navy Battleship HMS Valiant" height="641" width="1024" msid="81992805" hostid="261"></div><p>Two years after the Battle of Cape Matapan, Philip took part in the allied invasion of Sicily, serving as a first lieutenant and second-in-command aboard the destroyer HMS Wallace, a ship he is credited with helping save from a nighttime bomber attack.</p><p>Harry Hargreaves, a former Royal Navy sailor who served with Philip aboard the Wallace, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2003/dec/28/monarchy.davidsmith">recalled the events of the 1943 fight in the early 2000s</a> in discussions with British media.</p><p>He said that the Wallace was facing almost certain destruction by a German Luftwaffe bomber. "It was obvious that we were the target for tonight and they would not stop until we had suffered a fatal hit," he said.</p><p>He said that in that terrifying moment, he saw Philip in a hurried conversation with the ship's captain, presumably trying to come up with a plan of action before the bomber came back around.</p><p>"The next thing a wooden raft was being put together on deck," the former yeoman said. "Within five minutes they launched the raft over the side, at each end was fastened a smoke float." Once the raft was in the water, smoke began to billow up, as it might from a wounded warship.</p><p>The captain relocated the Wallace and then ordered engines stopped, sitting quietly in the darkness, bracing for the next attack. When the bomber circled back around for another run, it targeted the raft billowing smoke as though on fire. The plan had worked.</p><p>"Prince Philip saved our lives that night," <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2003/dec/28/monarchy.davidsmith">Hargreaves told British media</a>. "He was always very courageous and resourceful and thought very quickly. You would say to yourself 'What the hell are we going to do now?' and Philip would come up with something."</p><div type="image" title="Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Imperial State Crown and the Duke of Edinburgh in uniform of Admiral of the Fleet wave from the balcony to the onlooking crowds around the gates of Buckingham Palace after the Coronation" height="716" width="1024" msid="81992807" hostid="261"></div><p>Several years after the end of World War II, Philip became admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, colonel-in-chief of the Army Cadet Force, and air commodore-in-chief of the Air Training Corps. The following year, he was promoted to admiral of the fleet, field marshal, and marshal of the Royal Air Force.</p><p>Philip met his future wife of more than seven decades, Queen Elizabeth II, as a young cadet at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth just a few years before the war.</p><p>"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," <a href="https://twitter.com/RoyalFamily/status/1380475865323212800">Buckingham Palace announced Friday</a>. "His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."</p>

Prince Philip once lit up enemy ships as Royal Navy warships tore them apart during a bloody nighttime WWII naval battle

<p class="source"><span>Geoff Pugh - WPA Pool/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Boris Johnson</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Boris Johnson is pushing ahead with plans for a bridge between Northern Ireland and Scotland.</li><li>The bridge is reportedly set to be constructed across the largest munitions dump in the world.</li><li>One retired offshore engineer described the project as being "as feasible as building a bridge to the moon" adding that "no sane... government" would attempt it.</li><li>Sources inside Downing Street confirmed to Business Insider that Johnson remains personally committed to the project despite doubts about its viability.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Boris Johnson is deadly serious about building a bridge connecting Scotland with Northern Ireland, and is preparing to give the project the green light.</p><p>The prime minister <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-bridge-scotland-northern-ireland-would-cost-15-billion-2019-9?r=US&amp;IR=T" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has previously said</a> a bridge connecting the two countries across the North Channel would be a "very good" idea, despite warnings about cost as well as unexploded bombs in the sea dropped after World War Two.</p><p>Now Johnson has instructed civil servants to look at how the project can be delivered and is awaiting an official assessment on whether it is feasible.</p><p>A spokesperson for Johnson said on Monday "work is underway" on the project, adding that: "It's an idea that the prime minister has expressed interest in in the past and as he said at the time: 'watch this space'."</p><p>Downing Street sources confirmed to Business Insider that Johnson remains personally committed to the project despite doubts expressed about its viability both inside and outside government.</p><h2>'As feasible as building a bridge to the moon'</h2><p class="source"><span>NurPhoto/NurPhoto via Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">The Oresund bridge is reportedly the inspiration for Boris Johnson's proposed bridge from Northern Ireland to Scotland.</p><p>Officials <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10926538/boris-johnson-bridge-scotland-northern-ireland-union/">reportedly</a> believe the bridge could be based on the Oresund Bridge, which connects the Swedish city of Malmo with Amager, a Danish island near the country's capital, Copenhagen.</p><p>Officials working on the plans have produced a route from Larne in Northern Ireland to Portpatrick in Scotland.</p><p>Reports suggest the proposed construction will be part bridge and part tunnel, in order to deal with unexploded bombs in the water. The Beaufort's Dyke, seven miles off the Scottish coastal village of Portpatrick, is the site of millions of tonnes of rockets, metal drums, and radioactive waste, dumped there following World War Two.</p><p>The project is currently estimated to cost around £20 billion. However, costs could spiral due to the need for connectin infrastructure on either side of the bridge.</p><p>Prime Minister Johnson first suggested the idea of a bridge across the Irish Sea when he was foreign secretary in 2018. He has revived it since entering Downing Street as part of his plans for major infrastructure projects across the UK.</p><p>His proposal was, at the time, branded by one expert as a "thoughtless soundbite" that "no sane contractor or responsible government" would sanction.</p><p>Writing to The Sunday Times last year, James Duncan, a retired offshore engineer from Edinburgh, said the idea was "about as feasible as building a bridge to the moon."</p><p>"Many long bridges have been built, but none across such a wide, deep and stormy stretch of water," he continued.</p><p>"For a great part of the 22-mile route the water is more than 1,000 feet deep. It would require about 30 support towers at least 1,400 feet high to carry the road deck across the deepest part and above the shipping channel.
