"This would require a comparison between the women in those six-figure jobs and the men in those six-figure jobs."Rodgers is hopeful and believes the trend is a positive signal. "A big reason for the gender pay gap is not enough women in the higher-paid managerial and leadership positions. It's not going to eliminate the pay gap, but it should help to close it."

International Women's Day: campaigns that stood out

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A top <keyword id="21449" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ivanka-Trump">Ivanka Trump</keyword> initiative was deeply flawed and mismanaged, according to a new independent report.</li><li>The rollout of programs funded through a 2018 <keyword id="400442" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="womens-empowerment">women's empowerment</keyword> bill failed at one agency.</li><li>Ivanka didn't directly oversee the program but did promote her role in expanding aid to female workers. </li></ul>A policy program championed by Ivanka Trump, and aimed at assisting female-led small businesses around the globe, suffered from such poor agency oversight that the Government Accountability Office was unable to conclude how successful the program was - or even if it had worked at all.In a <a href="https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-21-269.pdf">report released Thursday</a>, the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office found that the rollout of the bipartisan <a href="https://www.usaid.gov/open/weee/fy2019">Women's Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment Act of 2018</a> was deeply flawed.Former President Donald Trump's eldest daughter and adviser, Ivanka Trump, helped promote the policy program and ushered the bill through Congress.The US Agency for International Development oversaw the implementation of the initiative and was mandated to spend at least $265 million per year on assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises under the Women's Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment Act. Half of the money was meant to go to women, while the other half was required to go to the poor, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2021/03/31/ivanka-trump-womens-initiative-gao-478710">according to Politico</a>. But Thursday's report found that the agency never clearly defined what makes a business owned and run by women. Nor could the agency conclude the amount of funding that actually reached women-owned enterprises or the very poor. Ivanka Trump was not responsible for directly overseeing the program, but she did help usher the legislation through Congress and in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFh9MOmB8UQ&amp;t=136s136s">2019 interview</a> vowed to "rigorously track the execution and efficacy of the money that we were spending," <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/01/us/ivanka-trump-gao-women.html">according to The New York Times.</a> Weeks after President Trump signed the Women's Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment Act into law, Ivanka Trump oversaw the launch of another reform initiative, the Women's <keyword id="23764" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="global">Global</keyword> Development and Prosperity Initiative, aimed at providing a "whole-of-government" approach to financially boost poor, female entrepreneurs around the world. According to Politico, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFh9MOmB8UQ&amp;t=136s136s">Ivanka Trump praised</a> the Women's Global Development and Prosperity Initiative as "enabling us to rigorously track the execution and the efficacy of the money that we are spending." But the culmination of the Government Accountability Office's 14-month audit made clear the opposite was happening at the Agency for International Development - one of ten agencies involved in the legislation's implementation. The report was particularly critical of the way the agency disbursed half of the act's funding meant to target those in extreme poverty. Officials in Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe told investigators they "did not receive any guidance on how to define the very poor" or "guidance on any poverty measurement methods to assist them…" which hindered their ability to deliver aid.As such, the agency was unable to "document its compliance" with the requirement that 50% of government resources be targeted to the very poor. Rep. Louis Frankel of Florida, who co-sponsored the original legislation, told The Times a reporting requirement that she helped write into the law prompted the independent audit and was "essential in turning things around."It is important that Congress continue to monitor efforts to ensure that the agency continues to improve its programs and activities targeting women and the very poor," the Democrat said in a statement to the outlet. Thursday's report included six recommendations for the agency, including that the agency identify the total funding requirements under the law; establish a clear definition of an enterprise owned, managed, and controlled by women; and ensure the reliability of its obligations data, among others.According to the report, the Agency for International Development accepted all six recommendations.

Ivanka Trump's women's empowerment program slammed in government report

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Women often see a big advantage to doing independent work instead of having a permanent job.</li><li>A survey from the freelance platform Fiverr found women prize flexibility and working from home.</li></ul>Women often see a clear advantage to independent work over traditional permanent employment.That's according to a recent report from Fiverr, the freelance-service marketplace.Women are more likely than men to have taken up independent work because they want more flexibility in their schedule (39% compared with 22% of men), prefer to work from home (41% compared with 31% of men), and want to avoid an unpleasant or toxic work environment (26% compared with 15% of men)."The freelance economy brings many opportunities for women. "Women who enter the freelance lifestyle can lead more sustainable and secure livelihoods as opposed to being under a single employer," Arnon said. The freelance market is growing, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-make-money-on-fiverr-build-million-freelance-business-2022-8">Insider has reported</a>. In fact, 39% of the US workforce took on freelance jobs in 2022 and, this year, searches across marketing, social media, and consulting are trending on Fiverr, a representative from the platform said.Fiverr's survey, released in April, found that despite economic uncertainty, the independent workforce saw a continued increase in revenue. Around 48% made more money from their independent work in 2022, up from 40% reporting an increase in 2021. Professional services, whether they be legal, accounting, or consulting, make up a significant portion of the independent professional workforce in the US, Arnon said. The survey found women are more likely to provide professional services (58% compared with 43% of men) and creative services (24% compared with 18% of men), but less likely to provide technical services (19% compared with 39% of men).Arnon said women who start companies can "leverage their own experiences to create businesses that tap into new and diverse markets or develop creative enterprises that can serve the needs of overlooked communities." A 34-year-old woman from Alabama quoted in the survey said steering her own ship helps put her at ease. "I don't have to endure toxic coworkers and management. I don't have to work 60 hours a week and feel unappreciated," she said.<h2>Emerging opportunities in areas such as AI</h2>Fiverr has seen an "exponential increase in supply and demand for AI services," Arnon said, and with the rise of generative artificial intelligence and tools like ChatGPT, she added, " I hope that women take hold of this opportunity and begin cultivating AI skills and businesses around AI services."The survey found that participants providing technical services were the most likely to feel financially secure working independently. Of course, starting a business can be tricky, and Arnon noted the top three roadblocks women run into when starting companies are inequitable access, opportunity, and compensation. "Women still bear the brunt of hurdles throughout their professional development," Arnon said. And "self-empowerment through freelancing can expand their horizons and take full control of their own professional lives."Overall, the freelance community is thriving, with nearly three in four independent workers continuing to be highly satisfied — giving a six or seven rating on a seven-point scale — with their work, and the work-life balance that comes with being their own boss, the survey found. Arnon said that by 2028, half of the US workforce could be freelancing. "Women will only continue to drive that exponential growth in the coming years, with more and more accomplished professionals opting into independent work instead of the traditional 9-5," she said.To gather its findings, Fiverr worked with Rockbridge Associates to analyze tens of millions of tax returns from annual US census data to explore the size, growth, and skills of independent professionals across more than two dozen of the largest metropolitan areas for freelance, knowledge-based work. The report included responses from 738 completed surveys from an online research panel in March and focused on three industries: creative services, skilled technical services, and skilled professional services. A 60-year-old woman in Virginia quoted in the survey saw independent work as a way to achieve freedom and bring in more money. "I have more flexibility in scheduling the hours I work. I have more satisfaction in completing my goals. I can give myself a raise each year," she said.
