Cybersquatting is the term used for registering domain names of known brands and entities with the intent to profit from their goodwill. With the growing e-commerce space in India, this illegal practice has also found its way into the country and is becoming a problem for cyber security. 
 
In the last 10 years, India's domain name regulator has transferred more than 700 web addresses that end with ‘.in’ and ‘.co.in’, which were done from illegal registrars; the transfers have been done to major companies including Pepsi, Morgan Stanley, Walmart, McDonalds, Amazon, Flipkart and Skype. 
 
"The number (of companies lodging complaints of cybersquatting) is steadily increasing as we receive 7-8 cases a month," RR Krishnaa, legal officer for National InternExchange of India (NIXI), told ET. NIXI is an autonomous regulator for domain names in the country, and has received more than 20 such complaints between December 15 and January 15, as per Krishnaa. 
 
"About 95% of such cases are transferred to the complainant through arbitration and some might get dismissed and some might go to the courts," Krishnaa continued. 
 
It was in 2004 that the Indian government had authorised NIXI to operate and manage the ‘.in’ registry in the country. It also acts as a dispute reversal agency for ‘.in’ and ‘.co.in’ domain suffixes according to India's .In Dispute Resolution Policy (INDRP).

Thus, the network announced the launch of its recent Prosumer Report, a global perspective on the future of e-commerce that captures information and insights on the sector, done through the network's proprietary research tool. Drawing on responses from 3,000 consumers from Brazil, China, France, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States, this recently launched survey examines the upcoming trends in the e-commerce experience. Our latest Prosumer Report gives a clear direction to the industry of where this e-commerce sector is headed, and also identifies trends of the sector.” Prosumers are the leading-edge 15-20% of consumers, who are First to the market (usually 6-18 months ahead of the mainstream), Forward-thinking, Influential, Proactive and Socially and/or environmentally conscious. It is this key section of consumers that our research studies. Throughout the pandemic, e-commerce has clearly established itself as the new retail norm as more than 8 in 10 Prosumers tell us they prefer the online shopping experience over the traditional format of in-store purchasing. However, 1 out of 3 respondents claims that their e-commerce experiences are quite boring. Havas Group’s Prosumer report deep dived into the e-commerce sector and came up with a few ways to upgrade the e-commerce experience by: Focusing on new rules of eCommerce: This includes free shipping &amp; returns, seamless &amp; fast delivery, customer ratings, loyalty discounts and purchases recommendations. Being on the right side of data history: Privacy is gaining momentum so data education should be mandatory. Expanding from a place to buy to a place to socialise: As e-commerce is becoming more human and is moving to social, making the experience more community-driven will bring results. An over-arching theme that is evident through the research is that the e-commerce sector still has a long way to go to address the gap in consumer expectations. If there is one aspect that the younger generation demands, it is a better consumer experience despite acknowledging the convenience that e-commerce has to offer. For this, the Prosumer report throws light on some rather interesting India specific trends that will go a long way in making the sector shine: <ul><li>The rise in community shopping experience: Post-pandemic, the desire to replicate in-store/mall experience has led prosumers to seek community shopping experiences from the <keyword id="863306" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce-industry" source="Orion">e-commerce industry</keyword>. In this context, we see a spike in demand for services such as the ability to shop on social media (66%) and the ability to interact with fellow shoppers (68%). </li><li>The era of Transparency: Contrary to popular euphemism, consumers are not averse to data sharing. India e-logistics industry set to touch $9 bn with e-commerce boom

The draft e-commerce policy from the Narendra Modi government has given executives from these companies sleepless nights. But in a move that may keep hope alive, the Indian government is trying to ease the function of e-commerce in the country. It has formed formed a standing Group of Secretaries under Ramesh Abhishek, the secretary for Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). This committee will ensure inter-ministerial/inter-departmental coordination on resolving issues, cutting across Ministries and departments, regarding e-commerce in India, according to an official release. After the draft e-commerce policy had been announced, Indian industry had voiced their concerns regarding the same. While foreign players not being allowed to take on multi-brand retail, domestic players do not have to comply to such regulations. Indian players like <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> had also mentioned that the policy ignores inventory-based e-commerce players. Founders of Snapdeal, Shopclues were even reported to have come together to set up a lobby for Indian e-commerce which would give the government its inputs on the policy. However, it is not clear whether this panel of bureaucrats will address the exact issues raised by the industry. Meanwhile, Indian e-commerce players have until June 27 to submit their concerns on the draft e-commerce policy. The Indian e-commerce market targeting consumers is estimated to reach $200 billion by 2026, whereas the enterprise e-commerce is expected to hit a whopping $300 billion. As of now, the country’s e-commerce industry is a mere 3% of the global market in size.

Bobble AI report is based on over 50 million smartphone users’ (in 640+ Indian cities) data processed in a privacy-compliant manner. It also revealed that while tier 1 cities dominate the fashion festival figures, transactions in tier 2 cities like Jaipur, Guwahati, Lucknow, Kochi, Mysore, and Bhubaneswar are at an all-time high – up 82% over the previous year. Apart from that, the majority of consumers are between the ages of 26 and 35 accounting for 37%, and between the ages of 18 and 25, accounting for 26% with 72% males and 28% females. According to the data intelligence company’s survey on the state of eCommerce in India, which was conducted across Tier 1, 2 and 3, beauty e-commerce apps usage grew by 64%, whereas fashion e-commerce grew by 368% over the past year. The festive period has only led the two e-commerce domains to skyrocket, with at least two transactions completed by shopaholics during the fashion festivals. In an interesting insight highlighted by the study, India’s fashion e-commerce industry has transformed from ‘Monopoly’ to ‘Ludo.’ Fashion giant Myntra faced tough competition from its competitive counterparts, Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq. While almost 46% of all transactions belonged to Myntra during the 2020 festive period, Ajio bagged around 69% of all transactions in 2021. The share of Myntra’s active users, also using Meesho, Ajio, and TataCliq has also increased significantly, indicating how users are exploring multiple options this year. The battle of the e-commerce legends, Amazon, and Flipkart is worth noting, with Flipkart’s active user base rising 83% in 2021 online shopping festival compared to Amazon’s 72%. Despite the fact that Flipkart is dominating in terms of engagement metrics like search frequency and active sessions, Amazon is winning in terms of transactions, significantly less average session times. Apart from fashion e-commerce, interesting insights have also emerged from the beauty e-commerce segment. Leading players Nykaa and Purplle locked horns this festive season – and Purplle took a piece from Nykaa’s pie. In light of Nykaa’s IPO, let’s look at their market share against Purplle, Nykaa’s pure-play fashion e-commerce competitor. Purplle had a 70% growth in active users in the 2021 shopping festival, compared to a 50% increase for Nykaa. With 15% common user base in 2020, Purplle is now standing at 17% in 2021. The festive season trends point towards healthy and fast-evolving competition in the e-commerce market, which bodes well for customers who are looking for high-quality products at affordable prices. With the festive season coming to a close, it is exciting to anticipate how the competition will pan out in 2022. Ajio and Myntra locked horns this festive season in fashion e-commerce: Report

The meteoric rise of <keyword id="35621" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> in India since 2014 is due to increased businesses from smaller towns according to a report by consultancy firm PwC India, exclusively available with Business Insider India. 
 
The report states that Tier 2 and 3 cities have seen 30% to 50% rise in transactions. E-commerce is making available world class luxury brands to the small town consumer base. This was unthinkable earlier. 
 E-commerce sites are usually data heavy due to the several pictures and plug-ins they use. With roughly 50% data penetration in towns one would think there is not enough <keyword id="6378791" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="3G">3G</keyword> out there to support e-commerce in smaller towns across the country. Looks like that is not the only deciding factor. “Companies would have to devise strategies to make their websites and apps lighter. It’s definitely a market with untapped potential”, Sandeep Ladda, Leader of Technology Sector Practice, PwC India said. 
 The current report also outlines incentives like free delivery, <keyword id="333876" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="COD">CoD</keyword> and deals and discounts as the key reasons for the recent take-off. Add to that enhanced functionalities like specialised products and expanded product baskets. 
 
Previously, only 5% of the ecommerce transactions were made with mobile devices. The figure has more than doubled to 13%. Some online retailers claim that over 50% of their orders are being placed through apps. “The e-commerce industry is definitely moving towards mobile apps, thanks to smart phones and 3G connectivity”, Ladda says. 
 
Apps are ‘stickier’ than websites. They can help contribute to building brand image and brand loyalty among consumers. However, the recent drop in Myntra’s sales raise questions whether the industry is ready to go app only. 
 
The fast-growing internet population of 243 million in 2014 is a general indicator of the huge potential of e-commerce in India. The industry has grown by 34% since 2009. It is pegged at $16.4 billion as of 2014. The figure is supposed to jump to $22 billion in 2015.

Amazon is escalating a 'Cold War' with Walmart over the Indian e-commerce market

<ul><li>The Indian e-commerce industry is grow to $200 billion by 2026.</li><li>The National e-commerce policy earlier had a deadline of being introduced by the end of 2019.</li><li>A recently released consumer protection draft is waiting for comments from leaders.</li><li>The draft e-commerce policy spelt trouble for <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>.</li></ul>Indian e-commerce is growing at a fast rate as it moves to reach out to Bharat – the next 200 million internet users in the country. But not all is completely well with this industry which is expected to grow to $200 billion by 2026. From deep discounting to FDI in e-commerce to data protection, there are several concerns that the industry and its consumers have to deal with. Yet, considering the speedy growth of the industry, the Indian government is all set to regulate the sector. It is planning to bring about a National e-commerce policy. A draft policy was introduced in February and recently yet another draft on consumer protection in e-commerce also came in. The government is engaging with industry leaders to include their thoughts in the final policy. The draft e-commerce policy itself opened debate as Walmart-owned Flipkart, Amazon came directly under the government’s line of fire. The draft has not yet been converted into a bill and hence will not be tabled at the winter session of the parliament. However, there could be an overlap with the data protection bill that is a part of the session. The National e-commerce policy was supposed to be introduced by the end of 2019. A recently released consumer protection draft is waiting for comments from leaders The government on November 11 released a draft consumer protection in e-commerce rules. It has been opened up to the public so that e-commerce industry leaders can give their comments on it by December 2, 2019. The draft once again emphasised that e-commerce players cannot directly or indirectly influence the price of the goods or services and must maintain a level playing field. They also cannot falsely represent themselves as consumers or post reviews on their behalf. It also says that every e-commerce player will have to “publish on its website the name of the Grievance Officer and his contact details as well as mechanism by which users can notify their complaints about products and services availed through their web site”. The draft e-commerce policy spelt trouble for Flipkart, Amazon Introduced in February 2019, the draft policy had already gone through multiple rounds of deliberations. While homegrown players like Snapdeal, Paytm Mall have more or less found a safe place in the policy, Flipkart, Amazon and Chinese retailers like Club Factory, Shein are in a tough spot. As the draft, FDI in e-commerce will only be allowed for the marketplace model and not for inventory-based selling. This means that Flipkart and Amazon, will not be allowed to own or sell through any of their entities. Through several meetings over the year, the government has made its intentions clear. In a recent closed door meeting with industry players, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also told Amazon and Flipkart that they must ensure compliance with new foreign investment rules and steer clear of deep discounting. Chinese retailers too will find it difficult to function without having an Indian entity. The policy says that all product shipments from other countries to India must be channelized through customs.. One of the major problems in the e-commerce sector, deep discounting or predatory pricing will be looked into as well. Anti-counterfeiting measures will be taken to curb the growing menace of fake products. Another important point of the policy is the government's insistence that all local data should be stored in India.
