These filmmakers will create films that highlight the ways work connects people, strengthens communities, and provides pathways for economic mobility.</p><p>Indeed connects millions of people to new job opportunities every day. And the partnership aligns with Indeed's broader diversity goals, according to CEO Chris Hyams. Indeed has a front-row seat to the bias and barriers that exist in the hiring process, he said. "We've been committed for many years to using our technology to try to reduce that bias and lower barriers," Hyams told Insider. </p><p>"The idea was really simple," he said. "What if, instead of spending a million dollars on one 30-second ad, we invest in 10 filmmakers to make short films about the meaning of work. And have those voices to be ones that are not typically getting that opportunity, coming from marginalized communities." </p><p>The first season of Rising Voices created 650 jobs and supported 10 filmmakers with a production budget of $100,000 each. The filmmakers produced 15-minute shorts that premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year. </p><p>Gabriela Ortega was one of the 10 directors whose short was featured at Tribeca. Her film, <a href="https://jobschangeus.com/risingvoices-huella/">"Huella,"</a> tells the story of a disenchanted flamenco dancer who transitions to a desk job and is forced to rekindle her passion by confronting a family curse. The Dominican-born filmmaker has since been accepted into the Sundance art of practice fellowship and is turning "Huella" into a feature film.</p><p>"The incredible work of the filmmakers in season one of Rising Voices validated our belief that talent is universal but opportunity is not. The proof is in the amazing work the filmmakers have gone on to do after the premiere at the Tribeca festival," Hyams said. </p><p>Hillman Grad Productions, including Waithe herself, has said it is committed to providing mentorship to nurture the filmmakers through the process and set them up for career success in the industry. </p><p>"We are thrilled to be bringing back the Rising Voices program with our partners at Indeed," Waithe said in a statement. "Creating these opportunities for underrepresented voices and kickstarting their careers is fundamental to our mission here at Hillman Grad."</p><p>As part of The Lab, the Rising Voices season-one filmmakers Johnson Cheng, Stacy Pascal Gaspard, and Ortega were awarded $100,000 each for their roles as filmmakers in residence.</p><p>"We believe that this is as impactful or more impactful as anything else we can do from a marketing perspective with that budget," Hyams said. "We'll be creating more jobs for other people that these filmmakers will be hiring, and we'll be helping to help them grow their careers in an industry that is extremely difficult to crack into."</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Millions of Americans have joined the Great Resignation.</li><li>Al Dea, a career advisor, said people are often on autopilot about their plans for growing at work.</li></ul><p>It's tempting to fantasize about quitting a job you don't like, especially with the momentum of millions of Americans joining <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ceos-executives-plan-address-the-great-resignation-in-2022-2022-1">the Great Resignation</a>. But for workers who are hesitant or unable to quit, it can be unclear how to make the best of where you are.</p><p>Many of us are just kind of winging it.</p><p>While searching through books at the intersection of business, careers, and self-improvement, Insider's correspondent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/shana-lebowitz">Shana Lebowitz Gaynor</a> realized she couldn't find what she was seeking.</p><p>"I noticed that there weren't really that many books and there wasn't that much guidance in general for people like me — and I mean specifically people who are not in a direct managing role or in a people-managing role but they're still driven and ambitious professionals," she said, adding that much of the advice was geared toward leaders "telling them this is how to keep your people happy and engaged and performing well."</p><p>In her recently released book, "<a href="https://affiliate.insider.com?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2F1264285248%2F">Don't Call It Quits: Turn the Job You Have into the Job You Love</a>," the experienced journalist compiled the career advice she wanted to see in the world.</p><p>In a <a href="https://youtu.be/zJv1aph--cs">live editorial event</a>, Insider's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/ebony-flake">Ebony Flake, a C-suite reporter</a>, spoke with Lebowitz Gaynor and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/aldea1/">Al Dea</a>, the founder of the career consultancy <a href="https://betterworklabs.com/">Betterwork Labs</a>. They covered three takeaways from the book and shared testimonials of their career pivots.</p><h2>Circumvent the 'Big Quit'</h2><p>Work-related misery is not new, but the number of workers fulfilling the impulse to abandon their jobs <a href="https://www.bls.gov/opub/mlr/2022/article/job-openings-and-quits-reach-record-highs-in-2021.htm">reached records</a> last year.</p><p>The pandemic plunged <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/capabilities/people-and-organizational-performance/our-insights/the-great-attrition-is-making-hiring-harder-are-you-searching-the-right-talent-pools?cid=gaga-pse-onw-pop-pop-oth-2107-search&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwmouZBhDSARIsALYcouq7iacp-eAKictVUcDEBYmwq9dPCDAGZm8qQIJK1cXzXu-93_hDOFEaAkrDEALw_wcB">entire businesses</a> into tailspins as workers and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ceos-burning-out-joining-great-reshuffle-2021-11">CEOs</a> spanning manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and service industries took part in the so-called <a href="https://www.thestreet.com/dictionary/g/great-resignation-big-quit-great-reshuffle">Big Quit</a>.</p><p>Lebowitz Gaynor spoke with consultants, public-relations pros, lawyers, and a Broadway musician, all of whom at one time felt unfulfilled in their work. They shared how they made their jobs more tolerable until they could find a better one.</p><p>One HR leader who had become disenchanted in her role shared with Lebowitz Gaynor a strategy she implemented to keep from resigning prematurely.</p><p>"Instead of quitting and leaving the job she had, she just sat down and she made what she called a 'trigger and action list.' In the trigger column she wrote down something that had bothered her at work that day: 'This team, I asked them to do this thing or give me this document, and they said no, we don't have time.' And then in the action column she would write down one thing that she could do instead of getting upset and feeling stuck," Lebowitz Gaynor said.</p><p>The strategy paid off. The HR leader eventually rose through the ranks to become a major media company's chief human-resources officer.</p><h2><strong>Take ownership of your career</strong></h2><p>People who take ownership of their career reap the benefits. Dea, one of the career experts interviewed for the book, said that many people are on autopilot or sleepwalking regarding their career development.</p><p>"One of the things that I found from my own experience in my own career as well as from talking with thousands of people about theirs is that no one actually really ever teaches you to effectively manage your career," Dea said.</p><p>Dea said he struggled to manage his career when he entered the workplace. He said he lacked the knowledge to take control and plot his career trajectory, which showed up in his performance evaluations.</p><p>Dea said mentorship is an effective tool for workforce newcomers and seasoned pros to grow skills, gain new perspectives, and make better career decisions.</p><p>"It wasn't until I went to a manager who I had a good sense of trust with and just said: 'I'm lost. I'm not really sure what to do. Is there anything you can help me with on this? How can I better understand how to do this?' And she was kind enough and smart enough to take the time to teach me a few things.</p><p>"After that, my performance started getting better. I started learning a bunch of mindsets and habits that would really help me effectively manage my career," Dea said.</p><h2><strong>Examine how your identity affects your career outlook</strong></h2><p>Lebowitz Gaynor acknowledges in the book's final chapter that sometimes quitting is the best option. But coming to that decision can induce anxiety.</p><p>For people from marginalized groups, the idea of abandoning stable employment can be further complicated.</p><p>"As someone who was raised by a single mom who worked two jobs — Winn-Dixie and Walmart — to support my sister and I, the idea of leaving a good and stable career for something as precarious as writing felt crazy," said Flake, who is Black. She added that when she finally <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/17-steps-taking-leap-from-corporate-full-time-creative-ebony-flake/?published=t">took the leap</a>, it occurred to her how much her identity and background had factored into the difficulty of that decision.</p><p>In her book, Lebowitz Gaynor acknowledges the role of background and life experience in the decision to quit. But she says a bit of self-examination can go a long way for those who are feeling doubtful about a necessary career change.</p><p>Lebowitz Gaynor offered a final piece of advice for anyone considering quitting: "Give yourself two minutes — sit down, stand up, two minutes — and think: Is there one thing, one little thing I can do to make tomorrow's workday better?"</p>

How to turn the job you have into the job you want

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Recruiters at major companies offer to hire <keyword id="11900744" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tesla" source="Orion">Tesla</keyword> employees who want to keep working remotely.</li><li>On Tuesday, <keyword id="11897862" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk" source="Orion">Elon Musk</keyword> told Tesla employees they must return to the office or resign, reports say.</li></ul><p>Tesla workers might not have to return to the office after all — if they're willing to jump ship.</p><p>On Thursday, tech recruiters put out calls to Elon Musk's employees who might be looking to dodge his <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-remote-work-return-office-or-quit-report-2022-6">return-to-work edict</a>.</p><p>On Thursday, Zafar Choudhury, who identifies himself as a technical recruiting leader at <keyword id="11893181" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> Web Services on LinkedIn, issued a call for disgruntled Tesla engineers to join the tech giant.</p><p>"If the Emperor of Mars doesn't want you, I'll be happy to bring you over to #AWS," Choudhury wrote on LinkedIn, referencing Musk's fixation with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-mars-trip-cramped-difficult-hard-work-2022-4">colonizing Mars</a>.</p><p>Choudhury didn't respond to a request for comment from Insider. Spokespeople for Tesla and Amazon also didn't respond to requests for comment.</p><p>The recruiter took aim at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tesla-remote-work-return-office-or-quit-report-2022-6">reports</a> that Musk sent emails to executive staff on Tuesday, calling for the workers to stop "phoning it in" and come into the office at least 40 hours a week.</p><iframe src="https://www.linkedin.com/embed/feed/update/urn:li:share:6937873240178536448" height="635" width="504" frameborder="0" title="Embedded post"></iframe><p>"If you don't like to be micromanaged by the Elon Musk's of the world, come to #AWSIdentity!" We will find you a team that treats you with dignity."</p><p>Last year, Amazon <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-return-to-office-corporate-employees-may-continue-working-remotely-2021-10">announced</a> that it would let corporate employees work from home indefinitely. It has been one of several tech companies to make the shift from an office-centric work environment to a more distributed workforce.</p><p>Choudhury was one of <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/florian-maupas_senior-software-development-engineer-sde-iii-activity-6938109512235012096-NamT?utm_source=linkedin_share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop_web">several</a> recruiters on LinkedIn who pushed for Tesla employees to join Amazon, as well as smaller tech companies, such as <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/murilo-gustineli_elon-musk-declares-end-to-remote-working-activity-6938167880404406272-Wl0v?utm_source=linkedin_share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop_web">Insight</a> and <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/posts/sandonsmith_musk-says-tesla-staff-can-pretend-to-work-activity-6937847816522264576-WKrn?utm_source=linkedin_share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop_web">Bestow</a>. A Microsoft recruiter also joined in on the hiring frenzy, <a href="https://thenextweb.com/news/teslas-archaic-work-style-is-other-companies-gain?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1654258279">The Next Web</a> reported.</p><p>In a post that has since been deleted, Tiana Watts-Porter, who identifies herself as a technical recruiter for Microsoft, told Tesla employees they would be given more freedom at Microsoft. Watts-Porter did not respond to a request for comment from Insider.</p><p>The tech company has embraced a hybrid work environment. Last month, Microsoft <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/14/technology/microsoft-rto.html">announced</a> that workers would be allowed to work remotely over 50% of the time so long as it was approved by their managers.</p><p>"You can do things your way, and be yourself here at Microsoft!" Watts-Porter wrote, The Next Web reported. </p><p>In his companywide email, Musk took a dig at companies such as Amazon that have allowed employees to work from home, <a href="https://electrek.co/2022/06/01/elon-musk-tesla-employees-come-back-office-or-quit/">Electrek</a> reported.</p><p>"There are of course companies that don't require this, but when was the last time they shipped a great new product?" Musk said in a companywide email, the report said. "It's been a while."</p><p>The billionaire appeared to justify his decision to bring workers back to the office on Twitter, saying his ultimatum was part of an effort to promote equality between factory workers — who have been required to come to work in person throughout the pandemic — and executives.</p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—Elon Musk  (@elonmusk) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1532403096680288256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 2, 2022</a></blockquote><p>Musk's stance on remote work could inhibit Tesla's and SpaceX's recruiting efforts. How to improve your workday without quitting your job &mdash; and how to know when it's time to leave

However, upgrading to the newest, shiniest gadgets can take a hefty toll on your budget.</p>
<p>Read on for six strategies that can help you save money in this product category.  </p>
<h3>1. Sell your old device. </h3>
<p>Before upgrading to a new smartphone, laptop, or tablet, consider selling or trading in your old device. Many retailers and wireless carriers offer trade-in programs. "The more current the phone or gadget, the more credit you can expect to receive," says consumer and money-saving expert Andrea Woroch. </p>
<p>While retailers typically offer a gift card toward future purchases, trade-in websites including Gazelle, BuyMyTronics, and Glyde offer cash. "Some sites will buy it from you even if it's broken, though naturally you'll get a lower buyback," says DealNews.com spokesman Mark LoCastro. "That's money that you can in turn use for your new gadget purchase." You may get more money reselling the device yourself through eBay or Craigslist, but that option also requires more legwork to complete the transaction and more potential for the buyer to flake out or defraud you. </p>

<h3>2. Know your needs. </h3>
<p>According to Stephanie Humphrey, weekly tech columnist for Ebony.com and founder of the blog A Matter of Life and Tech, it's a good idea to determine how much storage space and what features you need before a shopping excursion. That way a slick salesperson won't upsell you to a model that has extra bells and whistles you won't use. Customers sometimes "go in and say, 'Gimme that one,' and it's more expensive than what [they] need," she says. </p>
<p>With most non-Apple products, you can usually add more disk space later if needed, although it's often cheaper to buy the right amount from the start. If you must upgrade your disk space later on, Humphrey says you can save money if you buy the component pieces online and install them yourself. </p>
<h3>3. Consider buying the previous generation. </h3>
<p>iPhone 5s may be popular among the tech cognoscenti, but if you're price-conscious, consider an iPhone 4 or 5 (not 5s). "Electronics have one of the fastest depreciation values on any consumer good, as manufacturers and brands release new updates and models on popular gadgets every few months," Woroch says. "What's hot today may be old news in a few months, so it's not worth paying a premium just to get the latest bells and whistles." </p>
<p>LoCastro adds that a previous generation device is often still capable of running the latest apps and software. "You might just sacrifice a faster processor or thinner design," he says. </p>
<p>Timing your purchase to the release of a new model can also save you money. "The best time to buy a current-generation iPad is toward the end of its life cycle," LoCastro says. "So the minute you hear rumors that a new iPad is in the works, chances are retailers will discount the current iPad. That rule generally applies to all types of gadgets, from smartphones to tablets." </p>
<h3>4. Look for open-box deals or refurbished devices. </h3>
<p>Many retailers sell open-box items at a steep discount. "Open box may just mean it was the display model, or [an employee] may have opened it to show someone and that person decided not to purchase that item," Humphrey says. </p>
<p>Refurbished devices have typically been used and returned to the manufacturer, which usually restores it to factory settings and tests it for defects. Humphrey says it's a good idea to buy refurbished products from a reputable source, and make sure it's factory certified. </p>

<h3>5 . Exercise caution on secondary markets. </h3>
<p>Worldwide sales of smartphones to end users totaled 968 million units, and tablet sales reached 195.4 million units last year, according to Gartner, a technology research and advisory company. Plenty of these functional devices wind up on the secondary market when the owner gets tired of them or decides to upgrade. </p>
<p>Craigslist and eBay are two popular sources for used devices, but they can be riskier than buying directly from a retailer or manufacturer. Humphrey likes that eBay displays reviews from previous buyers. "You want sellers that have a lot of ratings so you can get a feel for how many people have walked away satisfied," she says. Just be cautious about what you read. "There's a whole industry now around buying fake reviews," Humphrey points out. Craigslist connects local buyers and sellers, allowing them to meet in person to test a device. "The only real way to know if a product is going to function is to power it up," she adds. If you're conducting a Craigslist transaction in a public place for safety reasons, you can easily test out a smartphone or laptop, but trying out a TV or other large device becomes trickier. </p>

<h3>6. Skip the extended warranty (most of the time). </h3>
<p>Retailers make much of their money from selling extended warranties, not from the products themselves. Your credit card may automatically offer protection beyond a standard manufacturer warranty for some items, so it's worth checking before you pay for an extended warranty. Also consider the type of gadget you're buying. "When it comes to televisions, you're usually safe to skip over this added expense," Woroch says. "While warranties do offer peace of mind, HDTVs are surprisingly reliable." Humphrey says you probably don't need an extended warranty on a TV, but it might be worthwhile for a laptop or tablet. "You're transporting those, so there's more of a chance that you'll drop it or scratch it," she explains. Still, the manufacturer warranty may not cover accidental damage such as water damage, so read the fine print before you buy.</p>
