<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="9916845" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hindenburg-research">Hindenburg Research</keyword> says <keyword id="11056926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ebang-international">Ebang International</keyword> is "yet another crypto China hustle." </li><li>The short-seller says Ebang has inflated its crypto exchange volumes and exaggerated mining machine sales.</li><li>Hindenburg also says Ebang's CEO Dong Hu used proceeds from US public offerings to pay off debts to his relatives.</li></ul><p>Hindenburg Research said <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/ebon-stock">Ebang International</a> is a "yet another crypto China hustle" taking US investors' cash in <a href="https://hindenburgresearch.com/Ebang/">a report</a> on Tuesday.</p><p>The short-seller, who recently <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hindenburg-research-kandi-electric-vehicle-startup-china-nikola-gm-2020-12">unraveled Nikola's deal</a> with GM after a scathing report on the EV maker, is targeting Ebang and its CEO Dong Hu with serious allegations of shifting money to relatives to repay loans, mischaracterizing sales in its <keyword id="6354947" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bitcoin">bitcoin</keyword> mining machine business, and inflating its crypto exchange volume metrics.</p><p>Ebang International is a Hangzhou, China-based manufacturer of bitcoin mining machines that <a href="https://ir.ebang.com.cn/news-releases/news-release-details/ebang-international-announces-official-launch-cryptocurrency">recently launched</a> a bitcoin exchange called "Ebonex."</p><p>The company has raised roughly $374 million from US investors in four public offerings since going public in June 2020. <keyword id="11056927" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ebang-stock">Ebang stock</keyword> hit record highs of $11.78 per share on March 17 before a dramatic fall. </p><p>Below Insider details a few of the claims against Ebang in Hindenburg's report:</p><ul><li>Hindenburg says that in November 2020 Ebang tapped the market for its first secondary offering with a $21 million raise claiming proceeds would go "primarily for development". Then, the company repaid $21 million in loans to Ebang Chairman and CEO Dong Hu's relative.</li><li>Hindenburg says Ebang claims to be a "leading bitcoin mining machine producer," but sales have dwindled to just 6,000 units in the first half of 2020, down from over 400,000 in 2018. </li><li>Hindenburg says Ebang twice applied for a listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, attempting to raise as much as $1 billion(which can be confirmed by <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bitcoin-hongkong-ipo/chinese-bitcoin-mining-gear-makers-set-sights-on-worlds-largest-bitcoin-ipos-idUSKCN1IG0F2">Reuters reporting</a>), but the firm's Hong Kong IPO plans were suspended following involvement in an alleged sales inflation scheme with a company called Yindou. Ebang had previously informed investors about a loss of 144.9 million yuan due to a failed relationship with Yindou.com.</li><li>Yindou was a Chinese peer-to-peer online lending scheme that defaulted on 20,000 retail investors in 2018 leading $655 million to "vanish into thin air". According to Hindenburg, Chinese prosecutors have been pursuing a criminal case against suspects associated with Yindou. The short-seller report includes images of Chinese protestors in front of Ebang's HQ demanding answers after the Yindou blow-up.</li><li>Hindenburg also alleges that Ebang's crypto exchange, Ebonex, was bought from a "white-label crypto exchange provider called <a href="https://www.bluehelix.cloud/en-us/about_bhex">Blue Helix</a> that offers out-of-the-box exchanges for as little as no money up-front." According to the <keyword id="7224343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="short-Seller">short seller</keyword>, Ebonex is also reporting "fictitious volumes" that can't be verified on "crypto exchange trackers such as FTX and CoinMarketCap."</li></ul><p>These are just a few of the complaints against Ebang International Hindenburg lays out in its <a href="https://hindenburgresearch.com/Ebang/">research report</a>.</p><p>Ebang didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on the short-seller report.</p><p>"$EBON is yet another cautionary tale for inexperienced investors. As is common with other China-based schemes, the co. will likely keep selling shares as long as investors are willing to keep buying them. He eventually concluded that the happy developments in his personal life (namely his relationship with Claire) distracted him from operating at his highest level at work.</p><p>In an interview with <a target="_blank" href="https://variety.com/2023/film/podcasts/jeremy-allen-white-iron-claw-the-bear-season-3-1235810636/ ">Variety</a> in December, White explained that he would work with chefs in preparation for the new season's material.</p><p>"There'll be a menu set, I believe, that's going to be for the restaurant in the third season," he said. "And I know that I'm going to start putting together that menu with different chefs and cooking and just trying to get prepared to do more of that stuff on camera."</p><p>"For the second season, so much of it was about putting the restaurant together, so there wasn't that much cooking," White continued. 'The Bear' season 3 premieres in June. Here's what we can expect.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A video of teens fighting went viral for appearing to show police treating a Black teen differently.</li><li>Police officers arrested the Black teen while the other teen sat on a couch and watched.</li></ul><p>One of the teens involved in <a href="https://www.insider.com/viral-video-black-teen-pinned-down-arrested-sparks-investigation-2022-2">a fight at a mall in Bridgewater Township, New Jersey</a>, last week said it was "racist" for police to only handcuff the Black teen he was fighting with and not him.</p><p>A viral <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/video/outrage-over-black-teen-handcuffed-in-mall-fight/#x">video</a> of the fight showed the two boys getting into an argument. After the two began fighting, police officers ran over to break it up. The officers then pinned the Black teen to the ground and handcuffed him while the other teen was allowed to sit on a couch and watch. Neither teen ended up being charged.</p><p>Mayor Matthew Moench of Bridgewater Township said on Wednesday an investigation was launched over the incident, while <keyword id="11925139" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="new-jersey" source="Orion">New Jersey</keyword> Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted he was "deeply disturbed by what appears to be racially disparate treatment in this video."</p><p>Joseph, the teen who was not handcuffed or detained, told <a href="https://www.nj.com/somerset/2022/02/other-boy-from-bridgewater-mall-fight-says-cops-were-racist-to-cuff-black-teen-but-not-him.html">NJ Advance Media</a> he didn't understand why he and the other teen were treated differently by the police officers.</p><p>"I don't understand why they arrested him and not me," Joseph said. "I say that was just plain old racist. I don't condone that at all."</p><p>Joseph, who said he is not white but Colombian and Pakistani, told the outlet he even offered to get arrested along with the other teen. The video showed Joseph putting his hands together as if to allow one of the police officers to handcuff him, but the officer did not.</p><p id="OTDZUZRRQZGBJBRW5TSJV3WQNE">"I even offered to get handcuffed, I offered to get detained after Kye was detained, and they turned my offer down. I even asked them why they detained Kye and not me, and they said because Kye was resisting," Joseph told NJ Advance Media.</p><p>In the video, Kye appears calm and does not seem to be resisting during the arrest.</p><p>Kye, the Black teen, and his mother, Ebone, appeared on <a href="https://twitter.com/DonLemonTonight/status/1494167847471394818?s=20&amp;t=xHWVyfRK3QFDxkmqQJrnvw">CNN</a> Wednesday along with their lawyer, Ben Crump, and said they would like to see the officers dismissed.</p><p>"I hate to say this but if it wasn't for race, then what is it? What made them tackle my son, not the other kid?" Ebone said, adding: "I'm not saying all cops are bad, but there are a few that feel they are above the law."</p>

Teen involved in the viral New Jersey mall fight said it was 'racist' for police to handcuff the Black teen and not him too

"The Magic Hour" was often slammed by critics for Johnson's poor monologue performance and for its low ratings, <a href="https://variety.com/2022/tv/features/magic-johnson-lakers-they-call-me-magic-1235224091/">Variety reported</a>. At the time, Stern was one of Johnson's most vocal critics.</p><p>So when Stern was invited to "The Magic Hour" by its producers to gain ratings, the interview went off the rails. The radio personality made a series of comments about Johnson's HIV diagnosis and said Johnson was "trying to talk like the white man," encouraging him to speak "Ebonics."</p><p>"I'm Blacker than you are," Stern said later in the interview, referring to the New York City neighborhood he grew up in. "I'm the Blackest Black man you'll ever meet."</p><p>Stern later asked Johnson, "What ghetto are you from?" When Johnson replied, "I'm from Michigan," Stern asked: "Is that a Black area?"</p><p>During the segment, Stern also made comments about Johnson's health, saying: "At least you had fun getting AIDS."</p><p>Johnson corrected Stern during the interview by saying that he had HIV — not AIDS. <ul class="summary-list"><li>"<keyword id="31081" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Saturday-Night-Live">Saturday Night Live</keyword>" made fun of Generation Z in a sketch called "Gen Z Hospital." </li><li>Social-media users said the show passed off African American Vernacular English as Gen Z slang.</li><li>John Rickford, a linguistics professor at Stanford University, called the sketch "an embarrassment."</li></ul><p>"Saturday Night Live" tried to poke fun at teens during Saturday's episode with a sketch called "Gen Z Hospital," but the scene garnered major backlash online, with critics saying it tried to pass off African-American Vernacular English as Gen Z slang. </p><p>In the sketch, "<keyword id="280516" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="SNL">SNL</keyword>" cast members <keyword id="11235377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="melissa-villaseor">Melissa Villaseñor</keyword>, <keyword id="11009826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="bowen-yang">Bowen Yang</keyword>, Kate McKinnon, Mikey Day, <keyword id="11235376" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ego-nwodim">Ego Nwodim</keyword>, and Heidi Gardner played members of Gen Z - broadly people born after the mid-1990s - seeking updates from a doctor (the host, <keyword id="6355315" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="elon-musk">Elon Musk</keyword>) on their friend's medical condition. The characters took turns using terms meant to evoke zoomers, such as "bestie," "gang gang," "catch hands," "the tea," and "sus."</p><p>Those terms, critics said, are not just mainstream teen slang - they were popularized in African-American Vernacular English, or AAVE, also referred to as American Ebonics.</p><p>John Rickford, a professor of linguistics at Stanford University who researches sociolinguistics, <a href="https://www.linguisticsociety.org/content/what-ebonics-african-american-english">wrote in a publication for the Linguistics Society of America</a> that "at its most literal level, Ebonics simply means 'black speech.'" The term was coined by a group of Black scholars who disliked labels like "Nonstandard Negro English" that were used in the 1960s, Rickford wrote. </p><p>Viral tweets criticizing the sketch accused "SNL" of appropriating the vernacular, following an ongoing debate about the use of AAVE by non-Black creators online. </p><p>"The appropriation of AAVE by white people is gross," one Twitter user wrote about the "SNL" sketch, adding that "the mislabeling of AAVE as a 'Gen Z phenomenon' is also gross, but on top of that, the SNL sketch reads like they just pulled a list of terms from UrbanDictionary and sprinkled them in, not caring that AAVE has a defined grammar!"</p><p>Another person tweeted, "This Gen Z hospital skit on SNL is so stupid. I'm so tired of nonblack people throwing random AAVE terms in their sentences and calling that horse s--- 'Gen Z language.'"</p><p>Rickford told Insider in an email that he felt the "SNL" skit was "an embarrassment."</p><p>Rickford said that this type of use of AAVE in comedy "negates the powerful, positive ways in which African American English is used in everyday life and by writers, preachers, singers, etc., to capture the vicissitudes and aspirations of everyday life."</p><p>The online outrage over the skit follows recent incidents of alleged AAVE appropriation by social-media influencers. TikTok star <a href="https://www.insider.com/brittany-broksi-tiktok-aave-internet-culture-slang-appropriation-chile-2020">Brittany Tomlinson, aka "Kombucha Girl,"</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/colleen-ballinger-miranda-sings-aave-twitter-tweets-2021-4">YouTuber Colleen Ballinger, aka Miranda Sings</a>, have both been criticized recently for using language that some have said comes from AAVE.</p><p>Tomlinson posted a since-deleted video on TikTok in which she attempted to argue when it was appropriate for non-Black people to use AAVE.</p><p>"So when someone quoting that or when someone says 'period,' 'sis,' 'snatch,' all that, it's very much like internet <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword>. Like stan Twitter. Stan culture has its own language," Tomlinson said in the video. She has since apologized and said she was "uneducated on the issue."</p><p>Ballinger posted a tweet appearing to draw on AAVE and later apologized, saying, "I was trying to sound like an awkward mom who uses gen z slang, so I google 'gen z slang' and used all the words that popped up. I should have done more research and realized that the words were AAVE. I deleted it, and I'm sorry."</p><p>As <a href="https://www.insider.com/brittany-broksi-tiktok-aave-internet-culture-slang-appropriation-chile-2020">Insider's Bria Overs previously wrote</a>, "those critical of the appropriation of AAVE by white or non-Black people say that the practice reinforces toxic racial power structures in society that have an actual cost for Black creators."</p><p>"SNL" did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

'Saturday Night Live' faces mounting criticism for AAVE 'appropriation' in 'Gen Z Hospital' sketch

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Influencer <keyword id="9723431" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="brittany-broski">Brittany Broski</keyword>, better known as '<keyword id="9723430" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="kombucha-girl">Kombucha Girl</keyword>,' landed in hot water after discussing criticism of her usage of African American Vernacular English phrases like "periodt" and "Chile, anyway."</li><li>The TikTok personality said in a now-deleted post that she believed certain phrases traditionally thought of as part of <keyword id="7185671" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="aave">AAVE</keyword> had become fundamentally part of "internet <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword>," excusing her usage of them.</li><li>Broski apologized for the statement, but the incident highlights the frequent issue of <keyword id="2484172" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="appropriation">appropriation</keyword> that occurs in internet culture. </li></ul><p>Internet users know the language. Words like "lit," "slay," and "period" (occasionally spelled "periodt," for a little extra emphasis) are commonly used in digital spaces and have been warmly embraced by a diverse array of people.</p><p>But now, debate has erupted over the common usage of such words, specifically "chile" (as in "child").</p><p>The conversation began after '<a href="https://www.insider.com/kombucha-girl-credits-gay-twitter-with-for-viral-fame-2020-2">kombucha girl</a>' Brittany Tomlinson (AKA Brittany Broski), who is white, posted a video on TikTok explaining her thoughts on when she felt it was appropriate for non-Black people to use African American Vernacular English (AAVE).</p><p>"The Nicki Minaj thing, 'The big boobs? Chile, anyway,' that's a meme, obviously. So when someone quoting that or when someone says 'period,' 'sis,' 'snatch,' all that, it's very much like internet culture. Like stan twitter. Stan culture has it's own language," she said.</p><p><a href="https://twitter.com/brittany_broski/status/1289341598115889153?s=20">Tomlinson has since deleted the videos noting that she was uneducated on the issue</a>. "I made some videos speaking my mind on something I wasn't properly educated on (AAVE) and I've since taken all the videos down," she said.</p><p>While Tomlinson quickly reversed her position on the appropriation of AAVE, it highlights an incredibly common phenomenon on the internet and in pop culture that many say is harmful.</p><h2>AAVE was born out of chattel slavery</h2><p>AAVE is a dialect of English created and used in Black communities. Although commonly used on social media, speakers AAVE are often criticized or made fun of in a wide variety of contexts.</p><p>Linguist Geoffrey Pullam described these criticisms in his<a href="https://web.stanford.edu/~zwicky/aave-is-not-se-with-mistakes.pdf"> 1999 essay "African American Vernacular English Is Not Standard English With Mistakes</a>." He wrote most speakers of standard English think AAVE is "just a badly spoken version of their language, marred by a lot of ignorant mistakes in grammar and pronunciation" used by "an ignorant urban underclass."</p><p>Despite this, AAVE's lingo is now being normalized and adopted by non-Black people and corporations who've framed it as "internet slang" among other ahistorical variants.</p><p>According to linguists at <a href="https://www.hawaii.edu/satocenter/langnet/definitions/aave.html#bkgd-hce">The University of Hawaii</a>, AAVE developed through the "processes of second language acquisition" among slaves. "West Africans newly arrived on plantations would have limited access to English grammatical models because the number of native speakers was so small (just a few indentured servants on each plantation)."</p><p>John Rickford, professor of linguistics at Stanford University, wrote "American Ebonics was shaped by the high proportions of Creole-speaking slaves that were imported from the Caribbean in the earliest settlement periods of the thirteen original colonies."</p><h2>How AAVE appropriation can be harmful</h2><p>Those critical of the appropriation of AAVE by white or non-Black people say that the practice reinforces toxic racial power structures in society that have an actual cost for Black creators.</p><p>Kayla Newman is a prime example of someone who has seemingly been harmed by the appropriation of AAVE.</p><p>Newman is most recognized for the phrase she created — "on fleek."</p><p>The phrase became popularized after Lewis, also known as Peaches Monroe online, <a href="https://vine.co/v/MTFn7EPvtnd/embed/simple">posted a video of herself describing her eyebrows as "on fleek.</a>" </p><p>In years past, it was unlikely a corporation would use "fleek" to describe their pancakes, but in 2014, that's exactly what <a href="https://twitter.com/IHOP/status/524606157110120448">IHOP</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/DennysDiner/status/516984038868123648">Denny's</a>, and <a href="https://twitter.com/dominos/status/605862973433737216?s=20">Dominio's Pizza</a> did.</p><p>Since then, the phrasing has become a bit of a phenomenon, but Lewis would not be part of that story. And, according to a <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/3/28/14777408/on-fleek-kayla-lewis-ihop-dennys-vine-twitter-cultural-appropriation">2017 Vox interview with Lewis</a>, she hadn't received any compensation for the phrase's use by companies or celebrities, and was embarking on a mission to trademark it. The effort was abandoned in 2019, according to the <a href="http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&amp;state=4809:rgrmua.2.202.20">US Patent and Trademark Office</a>.</p><p>Newman isn't the only Black creator who had their work co-opted and had to struggle for recognition and potential profits.</p><p>In February, The New York Times' Taylor Lorenz revealed that amongst all the fun around the popular TikTok dance <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/13/style/the-original-renegade.html">the Renegade</a>, its creator Jalaiah Harmon did not receive recognition or compensation for the use of the dance despite its virality. </p><p>Harmon felt that at the time the lack of credit hindered her ability to have other professional dance and choreography opportunities — and it seemingly did. </p><p>The NBA invited TikTok influencers Charli D'Amelio and Addison Easterling, known for popularizing it, to perform the dance during All-Star weekend, contributing to the appropriation. <p>The man, with long hair and beard, was discovered Thursday when his 24-foot fiberglass boat with propeller-less engines floated onto the reef at Ebon Atoll and he was spotted by two locals.</p>
<p>"His condition isn't good, but he's getting better," Ola Fjeldstad, a Norwegian anthropology student doing research on Ebon, the southern most outpost of the Marshalls, told AFP by telephone.</p>

<p>Details of his survival are sketchy, Fjeldstad added, as the man only speaks Spanish, but he said his name was Jose Ivan.</p>
<p>"The boat is really scratched up and looks like it has been in the water for a long time," said the researcher from Ebon.</p>
<p>Ivan indicated to Fjeldstad that he survived by eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood when there was no rain.</p>
<p>No fishing gear was on the boat and Ivan suggested he caught turtles and birds with his bare hands. There was a turtle on the boat when it landed at Ebon.</p>
<p>Stories of survival in the vast Pacific are not uncommon.</p>
<p>In 2006, three Mexicans made international headlines when they were discovered drifting, also in a small fiberglass boat near the Marshall Islands, in the middle of the ocean in their stricken boat, nine months after setting out on a shark-fishing expedition.</p>
<p>They survived on a diet of rainwater, raw fish and seabirds, with their hope kept alive by reading the bible.</p>
<p>And in 1992, two fishermen from Kiribati were at sea for 177 days before coming ashore in Samoa.</p>
<p>According to Fjeldstad, the Marshall Islanders who found Ivan took him to the main island on the atoll, which is so remote there is only one phone line at the local council house and no Internet, to meet Mayor Ione de Brum, who put in a call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Majuro.</p>
<p>Officials at the Foreign Ministry said Friday they were waiting to get more details and for the man to be brought to Majuro.</p>
<p>The government airline's only plane that can land at Ebon is currently down for maintenance and is not expected to return to service until Tuesday at the earliest, with officials considering sending a boat to pick up the castaway.</p>
<p>"He's staying at the local council house and a family is feeding him," said Fjeldstad, who added that the man had a basic health check and was found to have low blood pressure.</p>
<p>But he did not appear to have any life-threatening illness and was able to walk with the aid of men on the island.</p>
<p>"We've been giving him a lot of water, and he's gaining strength," said the Norwegian.</p>
<p>The Marshall Islands, in the northern Pacific, are home to barely 60,000 people spread over 24 atolls, with most of them standing at an average of just two metres above sea level.</p>
