The thinking goes that even when times are tough, people will still carve out room for small luxuries - like, say, a tube of lipstick. In 2020, times were certainly tough, but buying a tube of lipstick was suddenly pointless given that masks obscured our noses and mouths. Lipstick sales, and makeup sales overall, plummeted throughout 2020, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/07/27/895867487/pandemic-puts-an-end-to-the-lipstick-index">making the lipstick index essentially obsolete</a>.But there was one beauty category that not only avoided free-fall last year, but thrived, leading to a shocking surge in sales in the first quarter of 2021 that has even industry veterans scratching their heads: <keyword id="685999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Fragrances">fragrances</keyword>.Fragrance sales were up 45% in the first quarter of 2021 versus the year prior, according to data from market research firm NPD Group. Of course, the first quarter of last year included the onset of the pandemic, when fear and uncertainty may have started to affect consumer behavior, so it's worth comparing it to the same period in 2019 - when fragrance sales were down 27% from where they are now. It's impossible to know for sure, but Jensen has a few guesses, the main one being that fragrance may be the new lipstick index. NPD Group recently conducted a consumer survey that asked why people were buying fragrances. Half of the respondents said it was a treat for themselves - another 20% said it was a gift for someone else. It seems that in the absence of occasions for putting on makeup, consumers opted for another small luxury, one that only required a quick spritz. She said that she thinks the rise in fragrance sales is inextricably linked to the pandemic, a dark time when people were looking for a getaway, if only mentally."There's a science behind your sense of smell and how it's directly related to memory - you smell something and it brings you back to a moment in time," Jensen said. But what's driving the skyrocketing sales is customers buying jumbo-sized bottles of highly concentrated scents like eau de parfums from luxury brands - and buying them in stores, not online. "The second stores started to open up regionally in June [2020], sales immediately pivoted back to predominantly brick and mortar, and it stayed that way, and it still is that way through 2021," Jensen said.According to NPD's data, the fragrance category climbed back into the positives in August of last year and stayed that way through the of the year before surging in 2021 - Jensen said she expects that sales will be "out of control" throughout the second quarter of this year. That upward trajectory mirrors the beauty industry more broadly, which is seeing a resurgence as mask mandates recede for vaccinated people and society begins to reopen. Thereafter, the idea spread that cologne was exclusively for men and perfume for women - regardless of what the concoctions actually smelled like.To add more confusion, colognes are no longer just eau de Cologne, but can be any of the other concentrations as well, like eau de toilette (around 10%) or eau de Parfum (between 15 and 20%).So what does this mean for guys? They're made to be easily shipped and protect the oils inside from light, which can degrade the scent.</div></div></div>At first glance, it might appear crazy to sell fragrances like cologne and perfume online.But then again, five years ago it seemed crazy to sell glasses online, notes Eric Korman. Formerly a president at Ralph Lauren and Ticketmaster, Korman has founded a new startup called <a href="https://www.phlur.com/">Phlur</a> (a tongue-in-check reference to the French word for flower, coupled with a nod to pH chemistry), that aims to completely recreate how people buy fragrance.According to Korman, the idea for Phlur came from his personally frustrating experiences of buying fragrance in department stores."The sales associate is talking to me in this insider language, with [words like] 'notes' and 'It has a cold floral heart.' I don't know what that means," Korman told Business Insider, adding that a typical consumer wouldn't either.Instead of having you go to a department store and letting sales associates spray testers at you, talking about "notes," confusing your senses, and having you walk away unhappy, Phlur offers a new ecommerce-based solution. Korman says selling fragrance online is "counterintuitive for obvious reasons," but there is a way around it: letting the pictures and words on their sleek website do the talking, as a replacement for smelling."We need the ideas to come to life," Korman said. "If you've been to fragrance websites, all it is is a picture of a bottle. That's not how you sell fragrance online."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.phlur.com">Phlur</a>A sample of the imagery of Olmstead &amp; Vaux, meant to evoke a late spring walk through Central Park.</div></div></div>Phlur's site describes its six unisex scents in detail, using rich imagery to build a world to go along with the scent: desert scenes for a spicy scent called "Moab," and the early spring leaves of Central Park for a crisp, slightly masculine scent. It also gives you important specs, like how long it lasts, how to apply that particular scent, how heavy it is, and what your scent trail (or sillage) will be when worn.What you won't see: confusing signifiers like "eau de parfum" or "eau de toilette," any talk about "notes," or celebrity endorsements of any kind.Based on this information, you can choose two different two-milliliter samples for $10. These will then be mailed to you, and will last about a week each. Korman says $10 just about covers the cost of the samples, and no money is made at this stage.This is important, because, much like with dating, you need to spend some time with a fragrance before committing. Fragrance will not only smell differently on your skin versus a piece of paper, but the scent will also change and evolve after being worn for a while.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.phlur.com/products/olmsted-vaux?gclid=CNqovpqovs0CFcxZhgodWG8Mtg">Phlur</a>The "tech specs."</div></div></div>This is another advantage Phlur has over a typical department store experience, Korman said. He noted that they "took inspiration" from established ecommerce brands, like try-at-home eyewear company Warby Parker, to rethink the fragrance category - something that, according to Korman, hasn't really been done before now. Customers can then choose which of the samples they like better, and order a full-size 50-milliliter bottle for $85, minus the $10 for the samples, which brings the total to $75. Once you do that, Phlur will let you "gift" the trial experience to five friends for free.Korman said that while much of the fragrance currently on the market is overpriced, the price of Phlur's proprietary scents is more in line with the cost of high-quality ingredients. Phlur worked with major fragrance houses to develop the scents - the same ones that make fragrances for the big guys. One difference: Phlur gave the creatives 6-8 months to develop it instead of 6-8 weeks, and employed consultants to evaluate the fragrances to make sure they were up to sniff.Also like Warby Parker, Phlur has a giveback program. $5 from every sale goes to either the Central Park Conservancy (for the "Olmstead &amp; Vaux" scent) or the International Union for Conservation of Nature (the other five scents).<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.phlur.com/">Phlur</a>Phlur founder Eric Korman.</div></div></div>Fragrance is a $6-8 billion dollar industry, according to Korman, and it hasn't grown in a decade. Part of the reason for that, he says, is that brands are not connecting to customers, and instead relying on sexualized marketing."I think if you're ... a modern consumer, that message doesn't resonate," Korman said. "They don't want to be objectified, they want to be spoken to and connected with, and they want to be shown how fragrance can actually play a part of your entire existence and not just one part of it."Korman says that fragrance has been ingrained in human culture since ancient Egypt, and that "things that are woven that deeply into society don't just go away generationally." Internal research Phlur has done backs up this belief, with eight out of 10 people agreeing that Phlur was solving a problem they could identify with.Phlur currently has 10 full-time employees and is based in Austin, Texas. The British automaker announced the launch of its first luxury fragrance range today, starting with three colognes.
The "Lalique Bentley Crystal Edition" is a collaboration with French crystal maker Lalique, which created a crystal bottle topped with the Bentley "Flying B."
It will hold an eau de parfum created by Mylène Alran from <keyword id="6404654" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="perfume">perfume</keyword> house Robertet. Bentley describes the scent as "a fitting elixir of fine woody notes and exquisite leather to complement the epicentres of excellence within Bentley's craftsmanship."
Meaning, it smells like the wood and leather-filled interior of a Bentley.
The two other fragrances are "Bentley for Men" and "Bentley for Men Intense" (the "high-impact" version). Both are created by French perfumer Nathalie Lorson at Firmenich, and also feature "fine wood and leather notes."
The "Bentley for Men" product range also includes shave balm, and hair and body shampoo.
The fragrances will go on sale in April 2013. A 40 ml bottle of the "Lalique" costs £3,000 ($4,656).
The much more affordable 60 ml bottle of "Bentley for Men" runs for £43 ($66.74); the "Intense" for £69.50 ($107.87).

Dior Homme Eau For Men: Fresh and floral, <a href="http://www.dior.com/beauty/en_us/fragrance-and-beauty/fragrance/mens-fragrance/dior-homme/pr-diorhommefpl-Y0600940-eau-for-men.html">Dior's classic for men</a> gets an update in which the original's signature iris notes mingle with grapefruit and coriander to create a clean, just-out-of-the-shower vibe. 
Malin + Goetz Dark Rum: This <a href="http://www.malinandgoetz.com/perfumery/dark-rum-edt?keyword=dark+rum">mix of plum, leather, and patchouli</a> is a strong representative of the subset of fragrances with a boozy bouquet; after an initial hit of spice, it dries to a warm, sweet finish.
