Earthquake tremors were felt in Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Peshawar, Kohat, Lakki Marwat, and other areas of the country. Strong tremors were also felt in Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Kot Momin, Madh Ranjha, Chakwal, Kohat and in Gilgit-Baltistan areas, local media reported. Television footage showed panic-stricken citizens out on the streets. The earthquake killed nine people, including two women, and injured over 160 others as well as causing many buildings to collapse, authorities said, according to a Geo News report. At the time of the earthquake, a stampede was reported in the markets of Rawalpindi, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has asked disaster management officials to remain vigilant to handle any situation, according to state-run Associated Press of Pakistan. An emergency was declared in the hospitals of the federal capital on the instructions of Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel, The Express Tribune reported. According to the international seismological centre, apart from Pakistan, tremors were also felt in India, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, China and Kyrgyzstan. Earthquakes are common in Pakistan. A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Islamabad in January this year. The deadliest quake hit the country in 2005, which killed more than 74,000 people.

What’s the most on-trend travel destination going to be in 2020? It’s Bhutan, according to Lonely Planet, which has put the tiny Asian nation at the top of its Best in Travel 2020 book, an annual publication of its top 10 countries, cities, regions and best-value destinations for the year ahead. The inclusion of <a href="https://www.scmp.com/topics/bhutan" class="link-text">Bhutan</a> is all about sustainability.Often described as the world’s last Shangri-La, the Himalayan kingdom is aiming to become the world’s first 100 per cent organic nation next year, banning the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in all farms. It is already the only carbon-negative country, removing more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it contributes. “Bhutan really taps into one of the themes of this year’s Best in Travel, which is the growing awareness in sustainability and in looking after the things that make our world so beautiful,” says Tom Hall, vice-president of experience at Lonely Planet. “Bhutan is playing a leading role in that. There are many other reasons to visit Bhutan: incredible monasteries, fantastic festivals and classic Himalayan trekking. “It’s got a lot of things that travellers are interested in at the moment,” says Hall. It is not a cheap place to visit, though; the book points out its strict “high-value, low-impact” tourism policy that issues seven- or 14-day entry permits to foreigners, which are only valid for Thimphu, the capital, and the town of Paro. Most of the country is otherwise restricted. “[The country] has a per-day charge [for tourists], but it’s not bad value if you consider what experiences are on offer there,” says Hall. The daily fee – US$200 or US$250 for most travellers, depending on the time of year you visit – means, at least, it will not be getting much more crowded after its recognition by Lonely Planet. The Central Asia Silk Road – covering Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and <keyword id="169344" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tajikistan">Tajikistan</keyword> – takes top spot in the top 10 regions list ahead of Italy’s Le Marche, Tohoku in northeast Japan and China’s Guizhou Province. “Central Asia is one of those bucket-list destinations,” says Hall. “Places like Tashkent and Samarkand are remote, but colourful, vibrant and very Instagram-friendly – images are such an important way of how people are consuming travel and travel content, and awareness of this region has grown as a result.” Japan’s Tohoku region, still recovering from the 2011 earthquake and, much more recently, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/travel-leisure/article/3033850/Areas%20hit%20by%20Typhoon%20Hagibis%20brace%20for%20more%20floods%20as%20heavy%20rain%20falls%20in%20Japan" class="link-text">Typhoon Hagibis</a> , makes the list as “it’s a much less visited part of Japan, but it’s easily accessible and you can explore saké breweries, mountain temples and onsen,” says Halluizhou Province also drew praise from Lonely Planet as a must-visit region. “The centre of its capital, <a href="https://www.scmp.com/comment/insight-opinion/article/2148468/shenzhen-singapore-guiyang-who-else-can-hong-kong-fall" class="link-text">Guiyang</a>, has a lot of character, with artisan business, quiet alleyways, cafes and craft bars,” says Hall. “Out in the countryside there’s a feeling of ‘old China’, but it’s all connected by high speed rail so it’s easier to get to than ever.” Asian destinations featured in other categories, too. However, topping that list is <keyword id="8692" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword>’s East Nusa Tenggara; specifically, the area east of the famous Komodo National Park that was recently threatened with closure to visitors. “If you move east of Bali and Lombok you leave the crowds behind,” says Hall, singling out diving on the Alor Archipelago and the many pristine beaches as highlights. “It’s a place for independent travel and it’s like Indonesia was 15 years ago, but it’s [also] changing very quickly.” Every year, Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel lists start with nominations from its community of editors, researchers, locals and influencers, which are ranked by a panel of judges to create a list containing unique, compelling and topical reasons to visit various destinations in the year ahead. England came second on the top 10 countries list, with North Macedonia in third. “England represents better value now than it has for a while because of the drop in its currency,” says Hall. “It’s worth keeping an eye on. Anyone coming to England will find that it’s an extremely welcoming place for visitors – as it always has been.” However, the main reason for its inclusion is the opening in 2020 of the England Coast Path, which will be the longest managed and waymarked coastal path in the world. “It’s a long walk – about 3,000 miles [4,830km] – but it’s a really interesting way to explore England,” says Hall. Earthquakes measuring 6 to 6.9 on the Richter scale are seismologically classified as of 'strong' magnitude. Kashmir has a history of devastations caused by earthquakes because the Valley is situated in a highly earthquake prone region. USGS said it was 213 kilometers (132.3 miles) deep and 73 kilometers (45 miles) south of the Badakhshan capital, Fayzabad."There are reports of casualties and destruction" in some remote districts of Badakhshan, said the provincial director of the national disaster management authority, Abdullah Humayoon Dehqan.Power was cut across much of the Afghan capital, where tremors were felt for around 45 seconds. Houses shook, walls cracked and cars rolled in the street. Officials in the capital could not be immediately reached as telephones appeared to be cut across the country.In Pakistan, Zahid Rafiq, an official with the meteorological department, said the quake was felt across the country. In Islamabad, buildings shook and people poured into the streets in a panic, with many reciting verses from the Quran."I was praying when the massive earthquake rattled my home. I came out in a panic," said Munir Anwar, a resident of Liaquat Pur in the eastern Punjab province.The quake was also felt in the Indian capital New Delhi, though no damage was immediately reported. The group has eight member states and four observer states as a part of the group. Here are the compelling features of the 8 Wonders of SCO. Statue Of Unity The Statue of Unity is today the tallest statue in the world towering over a height of 182 meters. Inaugurated on the 143 birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the monument is a tribute to the first Home Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of India. Built within 33 months using 90,000 tonnes of cement and 25,000 tonnes of iron, the statue is ably engineered to withstand any harsh acts of nature. It is ideally located on an island called Sadhu Bet in the vicinity of Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River in Gujarat. The statue comprises five zones and three of them are accessible to the public. The interesting components of the statue include a memorial garden, museum, and an audio-visual gallery. The statue and the surroundings span over an area of about 4.9 acres surrounded by a picturesque lake that was created artificially. Daming Palace In China The Daming Palace is designated as the National Heritage Site of China. This is an imperial palace complex that belonged to the Tang Dynasty and is situated in the capital Chang’an. For over two centuries, this place was the imperial residence of the Tang Emperors. The highlights of the palace include the Three Great Halls namely the Hanyuan Hall, the Xuanzheng Hall, and the Zichen Hall. It has a gate known as Danfeng Gate at the central southern entrance. This is a massive gate comprising five doorways. A series of excavations and conservative works at the palace location followed after the site of the Daming Palace was discovered in 1957. The Daming Palace National Heritage Park was opened to the public on 1 October 2010. In the site of the palace complex, there are a number of exhibition halls that display the cultural relics excavated at the site. Navruz Palace In Tajikistan Located in the Ismail Somoni Avenue near the Varzob River that runs across the town, the Navruz Palace is one of the top attractions of Tajikistan. Initially constructed to accommodate a conference of leaders, this palace is now rented out. The four main halls of the facility include Guliston, Didor, Zarandud and Arzhang. Navruz palace also has a cinema hall, shopping mall and a nightclub. Lovers of architecture will find this place a great site to admire and relax. Also called as the Kohi Navruz, the idea behind this palace was conceived to make it the national tea house in the Central Asia region. In the course of time, it also ended up as the museum of national handicrafts of Tajikistan. Spanning over four hectares, the palace includes summer pavilions, fountains, art gallery, bowling, billiard, 3D, teahouse, and gardens. It is said about four thousand craftsmen from all over Tajikistan were involved in decorating the palace. Visitors can admire the exquisite wooden carvings on the ceilings, and the walls, paintings on the ceilings, and very tall cupola with the largest measuring forty meters. Mughal Heritage In Pakistan The heritage places of the Mughal period in Pakistan is one among the impressive members of the Eight Wonders of SCO. The two distinguished royal complexes we find in Pakistan belonging to the Mughal period are the Fort and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore. The fort is located near the Northwest corner of the Lahore walled city. It contains about 21 monuments which date back to the times of Akbar. This fort was destroyed and re-built many times in history. A typical example of Mughal Gardens, the Shalamar Garden was created by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1642. The 16 hectare garden featuring Persian and Islamic architecture. Tamgaly Gorge In Kazakhstan One of the most visited heritage places in Kazakhstan, Tamgaly Gorge is a highly unique spot of ancient rock carvings. These are among the oldest monuments of the land identified as petroglyphs. The most striking place of Semirechye, there are around 5000 drawings in this place including the images of gods, soldiers, married couples, and scenes of animal sacrifice and hunting. A greater part of these drawings are attributed to the Bronze Age. This place also houses a large number of ancient graves. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Po-I-Kalan Complex In Uzbekistan Uzbekistan’s Poi Kalan architectural complex is located in the center of Bukhara. The most impressive feature of this monument is the Kalan Minaret which towers to a height of 50 meters visible from any place in Bukhara. Arabs started constructing this site in 713 when they visited here to spread Islam. Though the complex has been destroyed and built several times, the minaret has outlived Mongol invaders, fires and earthquakes. The minaret’s diameter is 9 meters at the base and 6 meters at the top. The spiral staircase with 104 steps has been polished by the feet of millions of people who have visited it so far. In the past, criminals and unfaithful wives were executed on the site. The Golden Ring cities of Russia Created during the Soviet era, Russia’s Golden Ring is a tourist route that was intended to boost the number of foreign tourists visiting the country. Today, we see the Golden Ring popularly used by visitors as well as the domestic travelers of Russia. The eight main cities that make up the Golden Ring include Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Suzdal, Vladimir, Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl-Zalessky, and Rostov Veliky. The Golden Ring boasts of picturesque churches, golden domes and many other places of interest both ancient and modern. Kyrgyzstan — Lake Issyk-Kul Deemed as the seventh deepest lake and the tenth largest lake of the world in terms of volume, Issyk-Kul is located in the northern Tian Shan Mountains in the eastern Kyrgyztan. The term Issy-Kul means a warm lake. Though the lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, its waters never freeze. Forming part of the Issyk-Kul Biosphere Reserve, the Issyk-Kul Lake is known for its amazing bio-diversity. The total area of the lake is 6,236 square kilometers. Located at an altitude of 1,607 meters above the sea level, the lake reaches a depth of 668 meters. Around 118 rivers and streams flow into this second largest mountain lake of the world.
