Tsunami warning issued after 7.3 magnitude earthquake jolts Indonesia

6.9 magnitude earthquake jolts Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province

<strong><br /></strong><ul><li><strong>On Friday evening, three earthquakes and a <keyword id="42570" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tsunami">tsunami</keyword> hit the island of Sulawesi in <keyword id="8692" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indonesia">Indonesia</keyword>. </strong></li><li><strong>The death toll is calculated to be at 1,203 with two regions still unaccounted for. <br /></strong></li><li><strong>The reconstruction costs and loss of human capital will further strain Indonesia’s already struggling <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>.</strong></li></ul>After a series of earthquakes, including one that hit a 7.5 on the Richter scale, a tsunami reaching 1.5 meters in height hit Sulawesi island in the central region of Indonesia on Friday evening. In certain areas, the tsunami was even <a href="https://uk.news.yahoo.com/top-asian-news-4-24-m-gmt-042441533.html?guccounter=1">reported</a> to go as high as six meters (20 feet).<br /><br />The death toll had reached 1,203 as of Monday afternoon according to the Disaster Management Institute of Indonesia, Care for Humanity and Humanity Data Centre. This figure doesn’t include the headcount of two districts that were also heavily affects, Parigi Mountong and North Mamuju. <br /><br />

<br />According to Sutupo Purwo Nugroho of the National Mitigation Agency, “Bodies of victims were found in several places, because they were hit by the rubble of collapsing buildings or swept by tsunami... But we are still collecting data.”<br /><br />Aftershocks, totally around 215 so far, continue to the reverberate around the island causing a hindrance in rescue efforts and relief aid. <br /><br /><strong>Economic fallout<br /></strong><br />It’s not just about the loss of infrastructure but the loss of human capital and connectivity. According the UN Office for Disaster Reduction, the Indonesian tsunami could affect up to 1.6 million people. Global losses from environmental calamities averages at around $250 billion to $300 billion annually, with <keyword id="21718" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asia">Asia</keyword> contributing towards the largest share. <br /><br />That being said, the Indonesian president has authorised the government to accept international help for the <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword> and tsunami disaster in Sulawesi. A strong earthquake rocked Indonesia's popular island Bali - just weeks after a tsunami and earthquake devastated the country's north

He suffered broken bones and internal injuries on landing which ultimately killed him.</span></p><p><span>The air traffic control company posted photos of Agung's body being saluted by lines of what appear to be soldiers and with the hashtag #RIPAgung.</span></p><p><span>Icoze Ezoci, the pilot of the rescued plane, posted tributes to&#xa0;Agung on Instagram.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"Thank you for keeping me and guarding me till I'm safely airborne," he wrote. "Rest peacefully my wing man. "Be Fearless" tells the stories of innovators and activists, artists and entrepreneurs, scientists and explorers, and individuals from organizations and businesses who answered that question with actions that spoke louder than words. </p><p>One of the five principles of the book is "Reach beyond your bubble." Our society is in thrall to the myth of the lone genius. But innovation happens at intersections. Often the most original solutions come from engaging with people with diverse experiences to forge new and unexpected partnerships. It's amazing what can happen when companies aren't limited by old biases and leaders are open to ideas from the unlikeliest of sources. It is also important to applaud when larger organizations embrace fearlessness. In many cases, as large organizations find success, it becomes difficult to leave the comfort zone to forge new ways forward or to foster innovations that might be needed in a fast-changing world.</p><p>Whenever I think about established institutions and their boards facing fearless decisions, I am reminded of an important moment at National Geographic more than 100 years ago. At the time, the editor of National Geographic magazine made what was then a radical and risky decision: to put photographs in the magazine. Back then, photography was a "new tech" that was viewed by many as an unserious and passing fad. So, when the matter was taken up by the board of trustees, there was skepticism about whether photography was befitting of a serious science and exploration journal. The editor described how photos could be used to help bring the stories to life and expand the magazine's appeal, but some trustees simply weren't having it. And in 2019, that bold decision made more than 100 years ago continues to enable the National Geographic brand to reach further and achieve new milestones, with National Geographic becoming the first global brand in the world to pass 100 million Instagram followers and the film "<a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/films/free-solo/">Free Solo</a>" winning an Oscar.</p><p>This venerable institution, which I am so proud to be a part of, continues to be bold and take risks in a wide variety of ways. To update a story that was featured in the book, in early 2019 National Geographic embraced a partnership with the Walt Disney Company (resulting from its acquisition of 21st Century Fox) that holds all the commercial businesses of National Geographic. The same fearless spirit that has been in the DNA of National Geographic for 131 years is alive as ever and encourages us to be vigilant for new opportunities to illuminate science, exploration, and storytelling for people everywhere.</p><p>One of the other joys of the days on the road sharing "Be Fearless" was the new ideas and perspectives I gained from readers of the book. One young woman who is a budding entrepreneur came up to me to praise the chapter entitled "Crash and Learn" - and then she told me about her way of expressing the same idea: "Win some, learn some," which I loved! She has applied this thinking as she has confronted some early failures in the building of her new company.</p><p>Audiences everywhere have enjoyed hearing the story from the book about chef, restauranteur, and humanitarian José Andrés's efforts in Puerto Rico and around the world to bring food security to communities following natural disasters.</p><p>Following the publication of the book, my husband Steve and I were privileged to join José in Puerto Rico, where we saw firsthand the remarkable work he has continued to do there, after serving nearly four million of the victims of Hurricane Maria immediately following the crisis. Today, José and his team at <a href="https://wck.org/">World Central Kitchen</a> are working to transform the island so that it can be more sustainable and self-sufficient and, therefore, more resilient when disaster strikes. Many readers have told me how energized they were by reading José's story.</p><p>But here's the thing about José - and it's an important lesson on fearlessness. José didn't just do one thing, as important as it was. He keeps growing his sense of urgency. Since I wrote about his efforts, he has crossed the globe and has continued to work tirelessly and urgently when disasters and crises threaten food security. From the cyclone in Mozambique and earthquakes in Indonesia to the hurricanes in Florida and the food crisis in Venezuela, José has been on the ground taking risks and boldly creating solutions. For his efforts, and since the publication of "Be Fearless," José was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.</p><p>With all his success, José remains humble. "My name is José Andrés, and I am a cook," he said as he stood in the shadow of the Washington Monument in 2014 to deliver a commencement address to graduates of George Washington University. "When President Knapp asked me to speak at your commencement, I thought, 'why a chef?' Even my daughters said, 'They asked you to speak or to cook lunch for graduates?'" The students laughed, charmed by this man who was anything but a simple cook.<strong> </strong></p><p>José embodies the last principle I share in "Be Fearless": "Let urgency conquer fear<em>.</em>" Don't overthink and overanalyze. It's natural to want to study a problem from all angles, but getting caught up in questions like, "What if we're wrong?" and "What if there is a better way?" can leave you paralyzed with fear. Allow the compelling need to act to outweigh all doubts and setbacks. Chairman of the National Geographic Society and CEO Jean Case on what it means to be 'fearless' and change the world

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Jonathan Drake</span></p><p class="caption">U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina March 9, 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Donald Trump has done what few politicians have been able to achieve in this century: He has brought disparate immigrant groups together to oppose him in what some think of as a new "melting pot."</p><p>The concern now is, will the melting pot have a tragic meltdown?</p><p><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/08/us/trumps-rise-spurs-latino-immigrants-to-naturalize-to-vote-against-him.html?_r=0"><em>The New York Times</em></a> describes the passion and strength some Mexican immigrants are beginning to show against Trump and his hateful rhetoric. Their strategy as legal residents is to become citizens by the November election and help deny Trump the presidency. Federal data shows that naturalization applications rose 14 percent during the six months ending in January.</p><p>For Latinos, fear of deportation, separation from family and being treated as second or third class citizens is a powerful motivation.</p><p><a href="http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/02/16/Fight-Against-ISIS-Now-Includes-Chemical-Weapons"></a>For Muslims, who have also been targeted and reviled by Trump, it's even more: Fighting Trump, who represents a large and growing swath of the American electorate, is a matter of faith.</p><p></p><div class="panel-pane pane-views-panes pane-article-details-revisions-panel-pane-1 no-title block"><div class="view view-article-details-revisions view-id-article_details_revisions view-display-id-panel_pane_1 paragraph-count-wrapper body-content view-dom-id-51f3bc5901b2e9fca24e24e80752ee92"><div class="view-content"><div class="views-row views-row-1 views-row-odd views-row-first views-row-last"><div class="views-field views-field-body-revision-id"><div class="field-content"><p>After a string of strong primary wins, it's likely that Trump will be the Republican candidate for the 2016 presidential election. But what impact would his presidency have on U.S. homeland security?</p><p>The Paris attacks in November 2015, which were directed by ISIS, and the San Bernardino shooting a month later that was inspired by the terror group, illustrate the threat ISIS poses to U.S. homeland security, a danger that has become a major issue in U.S. foreign policy.</p><p>According to the conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, the year 2015 witnessed <a href="http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2016/02/the-81st-terrorist-plot-against-the-us-since-2001">15 terror plots or attacks in the U.S</a>, more than any year since 2001. At least three more were uncovered in 2016. Almost every one of these plots and attacks was inspired by ISIS. There are also about a thousand open FBI investigations concerning ISIS-related cases, in all 50 states. </p><p><a href="http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/02/25/ISIS-Marches-Towards-Libya-s-Oil-Crescent-Despite-US-Air-Strikes"></a>Trump has addressed the ISIS issue in many of his controversial statements. He has said that as president <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3255742/I-m-putting-notice-Trump-pledges-deport-Syrian-refugees-elected-saying-ISIS-fighters.html">he would deport Syrian refugees</a> and block any more from entering.</p><p>In November 2015, he repeatedly pledged to "bomb the hell out of ISIS." He called for the United States to kill the relatives and loved ones of terrorists. After the Paris and San Bernardino attacks, Trump called for greater surveillance of mosques and newly arrived Muslims. He has said that he would consider shutting down mosques at home.</p><p>Finally, in early December 2015, Trump called for a "<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/07/politics/donald-trump-muslim-ban-immigration/">total and complete shutdown of Muslims</a> entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on." Trump recently said he would bring back waterboarding, a form of torture used by the CIA after 9/11. He also said he would use methods that go beyond waterboarding.  </p><h3><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS</span></p><p class="caption">Iraqi security forces hold an Islamist State flag which they pulled down at the University of Anbar, in Anbar province July 26, 2015.</p></div><p></p></div></div>American Muslims and Homeland Security</strong></h3><p>The Muslim American community, which numbers close to 3 million, has recently been the subject of <a href="http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/hate-attacks-muslims-u-s-spike-after-recent-acts-terrorism-n482456">numerous Islamophobic incidents</a> following the Paris attacks. These incidents include air travel profiling and attacks on mosques and Muslim individuals, including women wearing hijabs.</p><p>If Trump wins the presidency and implements an aggressive surveillance program aimed at mosques and Muslims in general, and if he goes so far as to shut down some mosques and start deporting Syrian refugees who were legally admitted to the U.S, the Muslim American community would suffer further alienation. This alienation could result in more frustration, more fuel for ISIS propaganda and more terror plots on U.S. soil.</p><p><a href="http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/02/22/ISIS-Finds-New-Revenue-Stream-Currency-Manipulation"></a>The reaction of Muslim Americans toward a Trump presidency would vary. On one hand, secular Muslim Americans for whom Islam is a cultural background rather than a religious commitment might be singled out for hateful assaults nevertheless. As a result, sentiments toward Islamic extremism could soften among some secular Muslims. Moderate religious Muslims could have similar experiences.</p><p>Those Muslim Americans who are more religiously extreme, yet not violent, could also embrace aspects of ISIS ideology, perhaps going a step further and supporting, aiding or even plotting attacks. Negative interactions with U.S. law enforcement or with U.S. society in general have nudged some notable leaders of radical Islam into more heinous violence.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table center"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://pictures.reuters.com/Package/2C0BF1OI7SD0B#/SearchResult&amp;ALID=2C0BF1OI7SD0B&amp;VBID=2C0BX42PDEZX&amp;POPUPPN=5&amp;POPUPIID=2C0BF1OI7AIJR">Reuters/David Gray</a></span></p><p class="caption">Muslim worshippers pray, during the holy month of Ramadan in the Gallipoli Mosque, located in the western Sydney suburb of Auburn, Australia.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Ethnically, Muslims living within U.S. borders are divided into three main groups: those with roots in South Asia, Africa or the Arab world. A study by <a href="https://cchs.gwu.edu/sites/cchs.gwu.edu/files/downloads/ISIS%20in%20America%20-%20Full%20Report.pdf">George Washington University's program on extremism</a> found that those who were seduced by ISIS in the U.S were from all three main ethnicities of the Muslim community. (A fourth ethnic background among ISIS supporters in the U.S. is white former Christians who converted to Islam, but they are not a major part of the Muslim American community.)</p><p>Among Arab-Americans - those who are first or second-generation immigrants in the United States -radicalization often occurs in a way that is alien to average Westerners. Due to four centuries of Ottoman occupation of the Arab world, followed by several decades of Western colonization and then by several decades of brutal dictatorship colored by the Arab-Israeli conflict, many Arabs - even those who are well educated - chalk up most crises as <a href="http://www.economist.com/blogs/pomegranate/2013/11/arab-conspiracy-theories">pro-Israeli or sympathetic Western crusader conspiracies</a>.</p><p><a href="http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/02/11/Here-s-Who-ISIS-Would-Vote-US-Presidential-Election"></a>In mosques, schools and homes, the imams, teachers and parents feed Middle Eastern children conspiracy theories. War in Syria, a bad movie about the prophet Mohammed or an earthquake in Indonesia can surely be blamed on some group's wicked plans. In the Middle East, state TV, radio, Internet and social media also promote conspiracies. Some propaganda is promoted by authoritarian state actors, some by radical Islamists.</p><p>In the Middle East, dictators play the conspiracy theory card to discourage people from doing anything. When someone is consistently reminded that everything bad happening is because of overwhelming powers that are much stronger than ordinary citizens, he or she is left powerless. Radical Islam offers a solution where citizens can do something: terrorize those conspirators working against you. So, for some Arabs and Arab Americans, conspiracy is the shadow explanation for being personally soft on terror. It offers a type of relief valve for an otherwise upsetting view of the world.</p><p>Trump's rhetoric plays right into those conspiracy theories. Given the attention his comments have gotten, it is a sure bet that ISIS would intensify its propaganda campaign with spectacular recruiting videos targeting Muslim Americans, as it has done in other places where circumstances were ripe to exploit. This technique - seen across the Middle East, South Asia, Africa and Europe -- is how ISIS has gained a foothold, particularly in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Libya and Afghanistan.
