Sensex, Nifty hit new all-time peaks in early trade

A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/09/09/issues-and-the-2024-election/">Pew Research Center</a> survey from August 26 to September 2 found that among registered voters, 68% of Kamala Harris supporters and 93% of Donald Trump supporters said the economy is "very important" to their vote.Additionally, an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://apnorc.org/projects/registered-voters-are-split-on-trusting-harris-or-trump-to-handle-economic-issues/">Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research</a> poll conducted in October found registered voters were nearly split on who they thought would do a better job handling different areas of the economy, such as jobs and unemployment.The good news is that the economy is broadly doing pretty well these days."We've seen new highs for the stock market's major averages, falling inflation, the Federal Reserve shifting into easing mode and a job market close to the level associated with full employment," Mark Hamrick, a senior economic analyst at the financial services company Bankrate, said in a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bankrate.com/personal-finance/2024-election-and-the-economy-survey/?tpt=a#top-economic-issue">commentary</a>.While data suggests the US economy is robust, Americans may not agree. The index of <a target="_blank" href="http://www.sca.isr.umich.edu/">current economic conditions</a> from the University of Michigan's Surveys of Consumers has stayed stubbornly low throughout the pandemic recovery.Kurt Reiman, cohead of ElectionWatch at UBS Global Wealth Management, told Business Insider that he doesn't think people feel "euphoric" about the economy. "Voters are reminded daily of the high price of goods and services — whether they're renewing their car or home insurance, or they're going to the grocery store," Reiman said.They're not completely off base. There are a few less-rosy data points out there, like rising long-term unemployment and a historically high level of federal debt.As people get ready to head to polling locations or vote by mail, here's how the US economy has been looking.<h2 id="b1568735-2b7f-4c59-a18d-2eedb9252f8b">The unemployment rate has been under 5% since September 2021</h2>After it rose to around 15% during the height of the early pandemic in April 2020, the unemployment rate has fallen to historically low rates. Even though the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.3% this past July — the highest rate since October 2021 — it has dropped since.While unemployment remains low, the average time unemployed workers were out of a job increased to 22.6 weeks in September. So, those out of work are spending more time looking for their next job.<h2 id="a377c75d-6f92-4f82-9cde-9b55e3445625">Job gains have cooled but remain strong</h2>The economy keeps adding jobs, but the labor market has slowed from its red-hot pandemic recovery.The cooler-but-strong job growth is one indication that the US has continued to avoid a recession — the last one being in 2020.<h2 id="3c79dc9c-b337-418f-8654-44a48ca9035f">There aren't as many job openings per unemployed person as a few years ago</h2>One key measure of the labor market has been turning against job seekers. The number of job openings per unemployed person rose to a record-high ratio in 2022 during the Great Resignation but has declined to 1.1 openings per unemployed person in August and looks more like pre-pandemic levels.It's not impossible to find a job, though; Hamrick said there is "still a reasonable chance that someone who's going to be a job seeker will have a measure of success" depending on their sector and location.<h2 id="b156886f-3057-4ae3-81ab-96249d28aa4c">The inflation rate has slowed dramatically</h2>Inflation has been mostly slowing down after spiking in 2021 and 2022 based on year-over-year increases in the consumer price index.While inflation has slowed, Hamrick said consumers feel constrained by still-high prices. However, Hamrick said, "Americans will continue to claw back some" lost buying power as long as inflation continues to settle down while the job market holds up.Wages have been catching up, and real wages, which are adjusted for inflation, grew 1.5% in September from a year ago.The Federal Reserve has targeted a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-economy-outlook-data-points-to-soft-landing-no-recession-2024-9">soft landing</a> where inflation comes down without mass layoffs. So far, that seems to be happening. Additionally, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-decision-this-week-federal-reserve-powell-inflation-2024-9">Fed cut interest rates in September</a> — the first cut in four years. There's a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">high chance</a> it will decide to do a smaller cut in November, depending on how the data looks and other factors.<h2 id="3d0817c5-b03c-4e0a-a06d-bb0b9cf4edbf">Real disposable personal income per capita has been looking healthy</h2>Real disposable personal income per capita — a widely used measure of the money people have to spend or save — spiked in the early pandemic due to stimulus checks in 2020 and 2021 and the expanded child tax credits for the 2021 tax year.While real disposable personal income per capita cooled off as inflation accelerated in 2022, it has been gradually rising — and is above where it was before the pandemic and close to the pre-pandemic growth trend.<h2 id="28d1bb36-d16a-4262-837c-72d756c3510e">The S&amp;P 500 in 2024 has hit several all-time highs</h2>During 2024, the S&amp;P 500 has been historically high multiple times. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/these-6-charts-suggest-investors-should-proceed-with-caution-as-s-p-500-hits-47th-record-high-of-2024-197f7c0a">MarketWatch</a> reported it has hit 47 record highs this year. This index of large publicly traded US companies reflects corporate America doing quite well, and the rising figures may be good for people's retirement savings portfolios.Reiman chalks it up to strong consumer spending, slowing inflation, and lower interest rates leading to higher corporate profits and valuations.<h2 id="940327d3-930a-4b04-ae6e-e7a1a18f7e9a">Confidence among home builders is still low compared to recent years</h2>While the labor market is showing a lot of strength, the housing market is one area of the economy where there are some concerns. More single-family builders are feeling better about housing than a few months ago but are falling short of the confidence seen a couple of years ago. That's based on the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index, which tracks the health of the single-family housing market.The index, based on what single-family builders surveyed reported, was a not-too-confident reading of 43 out of 100 in October.<h2 id="5596c1a8-aaad-4fe9-8a2a-12db5abc4c25">Federal public debt as a share of GDP is elevated</h2>Reiman said the Biden administration will be "handing off an economy with higher levels of debt than when taking office." Federal debt is high compared to GDP, even looking beyond the spike of the debt as a share of GDP during the pandemic.While federal debt as a share of GDP was slightly above 100% before the pandemic, recent figures are much higher than in the past. Federal debt was 120% of GDP in the second quarter of this year. In the long run, a high debt-to-GDP ratio may lead to expensive interest costs and future tax hikes or spending cuts.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.21 per cent to USD 84.40 a barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth Rs 65.57 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data. After gyrating between gains and losses during the day on Tuesday, the BSE benchmark finally ended 220.05 points or 0.29 per cent lower at 75,170.45. The NSE Nifty dropped 44.30 points or 0.19 per cent to settle at 22,888.15.

While Trump insists he's sticking with Vance, the senator's poor polling combined with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trumps-team-harris-poll-surge-campaign-2024-7">Vice President Kamala Harris' momentum</a> has led some to ask: Could Trump replace Vance? And if so, how would it work? For those wondering, the answers lie in recent history and the fine print of Republican Party rules.It's still technically possible that Trump could choose a new No. 2. But such a decision would have to happen very soon.The Democratic and Republican National Committees have separate rules governing how they fill vacancies of presidential or vice-presidential nominees. Under Rule 9, the Republican National Committee explains how it fills a vice-presidential vacancy "which may occur as the result of death, declination, or otherwise."The rule allows the party to reconvene its national convention if it chooses or to move ahead with a vote of the smaller group of Republican National Committee members who would determine Vance's replacement.<h2 id="12eb5b8e-15d9-47ff-94d1-46c934702ec0">It would be a race against the clock</h2>Time arguably poses more complications than the specific rules, says Amy Dacey, a former CEO of the Democratic National Committee who's now the executive director of the Sine Institute of Policy &amp; Politics at American University."I think sometimes what people forget is that people start voting in September," Dacey told Business Insider. "There's an early vote in some states in September. So this is not just a November election. And the worst-case scenario would be for your nominees not to appear on a ballot in a state."Crucially, the rule explicitly applies to a scenario in which Vance voluntarily steps aside, says Kenneth Mayer, a recently retired political-science professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He told BI there was no precedent for forcibly ripping the nomination away from a vice-presidential candidate after the convention.Mayer also said impending state deadlines posed a significant issue, and the complications would only snowball once ballots were printed. It would be, he said, "extraordinarily disruptive" both logistically and politically to replace Vance as the vice-presidential nominee.<h2 id="525f068d-9ba9-4c68-be37-31ceb67be8ea">Vance has had a rocky start to joining the ticket</h2>Among Vance's biggest problems are his numbers — a CNN polling analysis found he was the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jd-vance-lowest-vice-president-approval-rating-republican-convention-2024-7">least-liked vice-presidential candidate</a> on the heels of their convention since 1980.In a survey that <a target="_blank" href="https://punchbowl.news/article/polling/canvass-respondents-prefer-youngkin-over-vance-for-trump-vp/">Punchbowl News</a> conducted at the Republican National Convention, almost 80% of staffers and leaders said they disapproved of the Vance pick. Most of those asked said Trump should have gone with Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia instead.Though Trump has consistently stated his support for Vance, reports say some in his orbit are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-jd-vance-regret-experts-say-wrong-call-2024-7">questioning whether the Ohioan was a wise pick</a> now that Harris will almost certainly be the Democratic presidential nominee.Trump has faced similar situation before. In 2020, there were rumors he would replace former Vice President Mike Pence on his ticket. Trump denied those reports. "If I did, that would be a great act of disloyalty because he's been great," he said.A representative for Vance declined to comment on the record, and Trump's team didn't immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.Trump reaffirmed his support for Vance on Thursday, telling Fox News that Vance was "doing a great job.""He is fantastic. No, it wouldn't have mattered," Trump said when asked whether knowing about <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kamala-harris-might-trigger-trumps-biggest-vulnerability-women-2024-7">Harris' candidacy</a> would have changed his strategy.<h2 id="a322f3ce-72e4-4921-b6ad-214e4a76246e">There's been only one modern example of such an extraordinary move occurring</h2>Left unsaid is that if a president or presidential hopeful were to replace their running mate, it would become an immediate scandal, one that risks overshadowing an entire election. Democrats did as much in 1972 when George McGovern dropped his vice-presidential nominee, Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri, after only 18 days together on the ticket.Eagleton resigned under pressure after the public found out he'd been treated for depression. The debacle is in part responsible for the extensive vetting process that modern vice-presidential picks endure, as McGovern selected Eagleton at the last minute and with little scrutiny.Politics and journalism have undergone seismic shifts in the half-century since the Eagleton episode, but a similar level of chaos and speculation would probably arise should Trump make a similar choice."Rule Nine and the RNC rules don't cover what the practicality of this would be and how it would affect the Trump campaign," Mayer said. "It would be hugely damaging. It's just hard to recover from something like that."

The NSE <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> went up by 59.95 points to 22,992.40.</li><li>NTPC, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Wipro, SBI, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries were the biggest gainers.</li></ul>Benchmark equity indices climbed in early trade on Tuesday amid buying in HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries along with a positive monsoon forecast. The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 194.9 points to 75,585.40 in early trade. The NSE Nifty went up by 59.95 points to 22,992.40. From the Sensex firms, NTPC, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Wipro, State Bank of India, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries were the biggest gainers. Tech Mahindra, ITC, Power Grid, Asian Paints and Titan were among the laggards. Equity benchmarks were on a record-breaking rally for the third straight day on Monday ahead of the results of Lok Sabha polls. The results of the ongoing general elections will be declared on June 4. "Nifty is expected to continue its upward trend, though key events like the exit poll results, GDP data, and May F&amp;O expiry could influence the market. Positive monsoon forecasts are likely to support agricultural output and economic growth," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. India's core monsoon zone covering most of the rain-fed agriculture areas in the country is likely to receive above-normal rainfall this season, the IMD said on Monday. In Asian <keyword id="19990226" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="markets" source="keywords">markets</keyword>, Seoul and Hong Kong were quoting in the positive territory while Tokyo and Shanghai traded lower. US markets were closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.23 per cent to USD 83.29 a barrel. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 541.22 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. The BSE benchmark ended lower by 19.89 points or 0.03 per cent at 75,390.50 on Monday. Intra-day, the barometer climbed 599.29 points or 0.79 per cent to an all-time peak of 76,009.68. The Nifty declined by 24.65 points or 0.11 per cent to end at 22,932.45. The 50-issue barometer climbed 153.7 points or 0.66 per cent to hit a new lifetime high of 23,110.80 during the day. "As we approach the election results a bit of nervousness is visible in the market. The sharp correction in Nifty in the afternoon on Monday indicates this nervousness," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.
